(00:00):
I'm very pleased to bring back ontothe show. You know him as multi
time best selling author of both fictionand nonfiction, and The Ross Kaminski Show
Senior Middle East correspondent Joel Rosenberg, who joins us on the beat reporting today
from Jerusalem, where he lives.Joel, did you actually step out of
(00:22):
dinner to come talk to us?I did. We've got some evangelical leaders
from the United States who are here. They've gotten more than they bargained for
in their stand with Israel and theJewish people because they were here when the
unprecedented and massive Iranian missile attack happenedon about two in the morning on Sunday
(00:45):
morning, and they saw it allhappened, as did I. It was
just extraordinary. I mean, I'velived here ten years. Ross, You
and I have talked about a lotof wars that I've been through, and
this was something that I've never seenbefore, missiles coming from the East,
meaning coming from Iran. Wow.Having dinner here tonight in Jerusalem, But
(01:06):
there is breaking news, Yeah, let's hear it. The breaking news is
that Israel's top news channel is reportingthat Israel's war cabinet that we don't have
a commander in chief, the PrimeMinister Yahoo in this case is not able
to make a decision to go towar or not go to war by himself
(01:27):
like the Americans. Obviously, youknow Presdent Biden can decide as the commander
in chief or President Trump before him. But we have a war cabinet,
and the war cabinet, we're beingtold is has decided to in fact order
a massive retaliatory strike back against Iran. But they're not making the final decision
(01:48):
until apparently till till tomorrow. Butbecause what are they weighing. They're weighing
the fact that present Biden is publiclytelling them don't do it. Now.
This is the second time that Bidenhas said don't in the past few days.
First he told the Irans, don'tfire missiles at Israel, and of
(02:09):
course Iran did not listen, andwe had three hundred and twenty fired at
us, and thank god, weshot down ninety nine percent of them with
American help and Jordanian help, andSaudi help and British and French. It
was quite a coalition helping us herein Israel. But the Urians didn't listen.
Now Biden is telling us not todefend ourselves by by you know,
(02:35):
giving Iran a body knows to sayyou can't, you know, to make
sure that we have a deterrent thatthey won't ever do that again. And
now Israel has to weigh are wegoing to defy the world's only superpower and
our most important and best ally. But Biden, Biden is doing two things
at once, ross and this isit's almost schizophrenic. And I mean that
(02:59):
politically, not not medically. Butyes, Biden is doing a great job
standing with Israel in terms of resupplyingUS with arms and ammunition and usually political
support at the U end, thoughhe didn't last week. But at the
same time he tells us here inIsrael, don't defend yourselves by, you
know, by striking back at aIranian regime that is just for the first
(03:23):
time in history made a direct attackand a huge attack, bigger than the
Russians have attacked Ukrainians and any givenmoments. Right, this is three hundred
and twenty missiles and suicide drones firedat US from Iranian soil. Now,
yes, thank god, we shothim all down, but this is insane.
(03:44):
If we let that stand, theywill realize that our hands are being
tied by the White House. Thatis not how you treat an ally.
And so that's the news tonight isthat it looks like looks like but it's
not a definite and it's not final. It looks like Israel is saying,
look, we respect the president, but we have to we have to fight
back. So obviously, if Israelis going to go down this road,
(04:05):
there will be conversations probably between Netanyahuand Biden, but also maybe Benny Gantz
and Lloyd As you know, allthese people are going to talk to each
other. What what do you thinkIsrael will do if the message they get
from the US is if you dothis, we will not you know,
(04:27):
help you resupply iron Dome or orany of your other systems for a month.
Well, okay, that would bethat would be even more devastating.
But let's remember that there are multiplelevels in the US Israel relationship in which
Biden might be saying, don't meaningit. We I think as the president,
(04:50):
I say said, it's going tomake the situation worse. You didn't
have any casualties in Israel, youknow, you shot them all down.
We have do Let's take that asa win. That is publicly undercutting us,
undermining our deterrence. But if he'salso if Biden is also telling Israel,
(05:13):
if you do retaliate, we willcut off your arm supply. Now
that is a massive breach of thealliance. And obviously you and I are
not in the position to know. But my guess is based on this reporting,
and again it's not final here, but you know, my guess is
that Biden is saying, I reallywould like you to not do this,
(05:36):
but he must be. But maybehis people are saying, also, if
you have to, you're on yourown. But it's not that we'll cut
off the relationship. But that's veryBiden is putting us as we're ten million
people America's three hundred and twenty million. You guys are a superpower. We're
small, we're scrappy, yeah,a bunch above our weight. But we're
(06:00):
facing eighty million Iranians. Most actuallyIranians are wonderful people, but the regime
is vowed to annihilate us. Theyare a genocidal force. And so Biden
is telling us, don't finish thejob against the maas in Gaza, and
don't retaliate against a three hundred andtwenty missile and suicide drone on your capital.
(06:26):
I think that's insane. I don'tthink that's being a good ally.
I think other allies around the worldare watching. I think Taiwan is watching.
I think South Korea is watching.I think that NATO allies are watching
and thinking. So that's how Bidentreats an ally that's under attacked, that
we're not provoking these wars, we'reresponding, right, people trying to annihilate
(06:48):
us. Let me slightly play devil'sadvocate. And just so you know,
I made clear earlier on the showthat I would like to see every one
of those Ayatolas and every member ofthe ir GC buried with pig blood so
they don't get their Vergin virgins. All right, So I'm not squishy on
these guys at all. These arethe worst of the worst, and I'd
like to see them all dead.I wonder I ever thought of you as
(07:11):
squishy on the threat of radical Islama. Ross. You don't have to worry
about it, okay, I mean, so, is there any potential upside
for Israel in holding off for ashort to medium amount of time on a
retaliation against Iran? If they thinkthat what just happened gives them a lot
more freedom of movement to go intoRatha and deal with Kamas because more of
(07:32):
the world is on their side rightnow. Yeah, that's a great question,
Ross, And that is not evenplaying the devil's advocate. That's playing
that's an angel advocate, meaning that'sthe exact conversation I just stepped out of
for a moment with these evangelical leaderswho are visiting here in Israel and these
historic days. Meaning so I believethat we have to hit Iran. But
(07:55):
the question is when if you know, Biden has been a problem for us,
But and I just explained as fairlyas I can, he does resupply
us with weapons. He does, you know, send over shipments of ammunition
to resupply right he is. Bidenis pro Israel, but he's schizophrenic about
it, and that's causing us aproblem because but the point is Biden's case
(08:20):
that listen, Bibe and israelis wejust work together with Britain, France,
the Jordanians, the Saudis, andyou and us as Americans. We just
did something together that was very positive, very successful. Why don't we take
some time to build on that.I think that's the case that Biden,
(08:45):
if you will get in the mostpositive light, that's the case he's making
right, right, you know, try to get a little more traction in
the peace talks for example. Absolutely, and right. But the problem is
the way the White House has treatednet Yaku in recent weeks is that they're
linking that Biden is telling people thatBenjamin Netanyahu is a bad effing guy.
(09:09):
That's a hole. When you're dealingwith a president who's throwing you under a
bus in a hot war, yourcross level is mixed at best. Right,
you don't hear Biden talking about putinthat way. You don't hear Biden
talking about Jijen King in China thatway. He's talking about a democratically elected
(09:31):
prime Minster in the midst of ahot war with Iran and Iran proxy.
And so that's why it's hard notto feel that our hands are being tied.
And yet I think that Wark Cabinetis just has been discussing now for
we're at seventy two hours after theattack and we haven't fought back. Why,
Because I think we're really weighing, well, what are the Americans saying,
(09:54):
what do they actually want us todo or not do, because I
don't think everybody in the w WhiteHouse is I don't think they're anti Israel.
I do think they want to avoida larger war. I also think
they're appeasers. And that's the danger. It's it's not that they're it's not
that their intentions in the White Houseare wrong, meaning let's not have a
(10:16):
big, massive escalation of a war. That intention is probably right, but
the problem is we already are ina massive regional war and we're the ones
defending us ourselves for our lives. And so it's easy for a superpower seven
thousand kilometers away or something miles awayto say, hey, hey, take
it easy. Well, do wemean take it easy? We just had
(10:37):
three hundred and twenty missiles fired atour heads. Just because they didn't,
just because we shot them down, doesn't mean we're out of danger. And
in fact, if we don't punchback hard, really hard, they're gonna
shoot again and we may not beso lucky next time. And so this
is the tension. It's number.Yeah, I didn't I think he means
(10:58):
well, but I don't think heis leading well well. So first of
all, and I don't say thisto be unkind, I just say it
as analysis. Joe Biden's an idiotwho has never been right about anything in
foreign policy. Jake Sullivan is notmuch better. I think a little better
of Anthony Blincoln not much better. But I think of those three, I
(11:22):
think he's the best. I thinkhe's also part Jewish, so I don't
think he's right. But here's ifI'm going to take the other side of
my other side. If I weregoing to make an argument as to why
to attack sooner, Joel, whatI would say is Iran just proved that
(11:43):
their ballistic missile threat is much lessthan we thought. And this stuff was
blowing up over Iran and not gettingoff the ground, and you know,
even separate from the ones that gotshot down. So we know we can
defend against this stuff. We hopethat some of the people who helped us
defend again against it the first timewill help us defend against it if it
(12:05):
comes at us again. But maybewe should attack now before they you know,
before they fix their ballistic missiles andbefore they have a nuclear weapon,
because they've been talking about that forever. Maybe it's only going to get more
difficult and riskier to do it later. Yeah, I think that if there
was ever a moment for Israel tohave the moral and strategic justification to waant
(12:31):
a massive attack and take out theentire Iran nuclear program, and I would
add the Defense Ministry and all ofthe iatola's homes and private residences. This
is the week, Like we're alreadyin a war six months running, We've
been in a war with their proxies. Now for the first time in almost
seventy six years of Israel's modern existence, Iran has been so brazen as to
(12:58):
attack us directly from Iranian soil. And while you're right Denver to say,
yes, some of their missiles didn'tget off the launching pads, and we
were all very successful as a coalitionto fight to shoot them down. From
an Israeli perspective living here, thosemissiles got through, all of them,
right, But that means they canreach us, they can hit us.
(13:20):
And what if one of those hada nuclear warhead on it? I mean,
how close are we? I don'tknow, but I don't want to
find out. Like, this isa moment You're like, listen, you
have literally just crossed the ultimate line. I think all Israelis would support a
massive attack on Iran. I thinkthey will be furious if the Israeli government
(13:43):
doesn't. But the question is when, I mean, it's fair to think,
Okay, this is a big moment. We got to get it right.
You don't get a second chance atthe first strike. Well, it's
you know, it's my first kingthe response. But remember we've been talking
for your I've written a whole novelsabout and Israeli preemptive strike. This is
(14:05):
now not preemptive. This is actuallyretaliatory from what they did. It's a
big moment. The other subhead intothe headlines here is that all airlines are
shutting down in the next twenty fourhours. So we've got these Evan Juggle
leaders. They're they're also on thephone right now. They're supposed to fly
out tomorrow. But the question isare there are their planes going to take
(14:28):
off now? Israeli national airlines calledl AL actually have missile defense systems.
They're classified. We can't describe whatthey are, but they're on our planes.
But but what international carriers don't havemissile defenses on the plane. So
(14:48):
it's a big deal. And andit's only news that's just starting to break
and it's it's the country is processingwhat I mean. Look, this is
heading into apocalyptic territory. I'm notsaying it's biblical prophetic, but I'm saying
this thing could get completely out ofcontrol and we've got to walk very very
(15:09):
carefully. Okay, So we've gottenand is not making it easier. We
got five minutes, and I wantto see if I can squeeze in three
quick questions for you, So giveme relatively short answers and for those just
joining. We're talking with best sellingauthor Joel Rosenberg, who I call our
the Roskiminski shows Middle East correspondent. He lives in Jerusalem. All right,
(15:30):
three quick questions. You are betterconnected to a lot of the Arab leadership
in the area than anybody I know. What is your guess as to what
the King of Jordan or the kingor Prime Minister Prince of Saudi Arabia are
thinking right now? Well, let'stake those two. I know them both
quite well. I would say theKing of Jordan is saying that he agrees
(15:54):
with Biden. Look, we dodged, we literally dodged the well. Let's
be shot bullets out of the sky. Jordan helps, They literally help shoot
dozens of missiles out of the sky, not for us, but because they
have a peace treaty with US andwith the United States of course, So
I think Jordan wants this thing tostop tonight, but I think that I
(16:15):
would. I'm I'm guessing that theCrown Prince of Saudi Arabia is thinking the
first person that will punch the iatolasin the nose and really makes them bleed
is doing the right thing, evenif this gets massy. Okay, next
question, I know we can keepgoing all that, but what's the feeling
(16:36):
among people who live in Israel rightnow? Just in your gun, it's
remarkably calm. There's not fear.I'm looking at a group of young people
that are just having a picnic inthe park. If you've lived in a
country that had just been attacked bythree hundred and twenty missiles, you might
be living in your basement or yourbomb shelter. Is really are going calmly
(16:56):
and even surefly about their day.But are they paying attention to every news
bulletin? Absolutely, we are atwar. We've been at war. We've
got one hundred and thirty three hostagesstill trapped in Gaza. I've been in
Gaza. I've been in those trottunnels, and I'm telling you it is
we got to get these people out. Well, we are fighting on multiple
fronts. You're still with me?All right? Looks like we've yeah,
(17:22):
all right, it sounds like hisline drop. But that's okay. We
got pretty much everything, and I'mjust about out of time anyway, So
thanks so much. I mean, how often you get a guy who's sold
like millions of books and knows theKing of Jordan and knows the crown Prince
of Saudi Arabia and knows bb netand Yahoo? How often you get that
guy stepping out of dinner in Jerusalemto call into a show. It looks
(17:47):
like he might be calling back rightnow. Is that him? Is that
Joel? All right? So I'lltell you what before before we say goodbye
and Joel to thing and thank youto Joel. I got one last question
for you, and it's kind oftangential, but I want to ask you
anyway. Okay, you know, this Iranian story is obviously the biggest thing
(18:07):
in the world in a long time. I saw another story about the killing
of a fourteen year old Israeli boyin the West Bank. And it makes
me wonder because I read another storyabout Iran funneling weapons into the West Bank
in large, large quantities. Itmakes me wonder whether the West Bank is
about to turn into Gaza, andor whether I'm reading too much into the
(18:29):
story of the dead for the murderedfourteen year old. No, the short
answer is your instincts are well honedloss unfortunately. But actually there's been a
massive amount of fighting in the WestBank, and Israel's been capturing a lot
of terrorists and in the last sixmonths, you just don't hear about it
because Gaza dominates the news. Butwe're actively fighting terrorists. It's not as
(18:55):
bad as Gaza, but we are. It's an active fight everything day,
every single night, and this tragedyof this fourteen year old is just the
latest in the fight that we're upagainst. Joel Rosenberg best selling author in
both fiction and nonfiction. His websiteis Joel Rosenberg dot com. He's also
I want to make sure everybody knowsthis, He's the proprietor of a website
(19:17):
called Alli Israel dot com, whichis some of the best, fastest,
most kind of inside because of everybody, Joel knows news about what's going on
in and near Israel. That's allIsrael dot com. Joel, thank you
so much for stepping out of dinnerto come talk to us. Please tell
the evangelical leaders who are with youthat I and my listeners said thank you
(19:37):
very much, and I wish themall safe travels. It's an honor.
Ross. I appreciate your care aboutthese issues and I'm always on an honor
to be your Middle East correspondent andall digital news as well. Thank you,
Thank you,
