Speaker 1 (00:00):
Three days until the game. Good morning, it's Mike Elliott,
Columbus's morning news. Let's bring in coach Bill Conley on
the Legacy Retirement Group dot com phone line. Bill that
never gets old, does it.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
I'll tell you what. I'm gonna go. All right, my driveway,
I'm gonna do about twenty updowns. I'm getting read for
this game already. My gosh, let's go.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
I know, I know, you know. I I love Thanksgiving.
I like the I like the days when this game
was before Thanksgiving. The Thanksgiving is a distraction for me
because we got to stop down everything, you know, do
the Dog and Pony show with the family, and then
get back up for it on Friday and then Saturday morning.
(00:39):
So but anyway, it said something we got to deal with.
How are you How are you feeling on this Wednesday
before the game?
Speaker 2 (00:45):
You know, I'm feeling good. I really am, uh And
I tell you why, because I think our defense is
the best in the country. And you know, they say
offense sales tickets, but defense wins championships. And that's kind
of the way I'm feeling.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
I think you're exactly right to feel that way. That's
that is the difference. That defense is markedly improved. And
and I gotta tell you I was a little critical
and questioning the hiring of Matt Patricia when when when
he was named over the summer, you know, camping and
I would talk and say, you know, I don't know.
(01:21):
I mean, he he had a good career with the
Patriots in the NFL. He had a dismal time as
the head coach of the Detroit Lions. Then he was
out of football for a while, he was consulting, hadn't
coached at the collegiate level in a long long time.
And I will be the first to admit that I
was wrong. He's got these guys playing like an NFL
(01:41):
defense right now.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Well, it really does. And the thing about it, and
you're right, Mike, You know, some coaches are made out
to be pro coaches and some are better comice coaches.
And it just seems like, man, he has really found
his niche especially here at Ohio State. The players really
respond to him. They take his coaching well, and the plans.
It's a high caliber right now. Unbelievable. He's done a
(02:03):
fantastic job.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
The question all week spend the health of Jeremiah Smith.
And Carnell Tate. It's leaning like it's what the word
they use. Yet yesterday they're trending in the right direction
to play on Saturday. Is that what you're hearing too?
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Yeah, you're hearing that, but you're not going to know
any of that stuff for about two hours for the game,
right you don't release that stuff. And more of course,
you know they've got their group of injuries to the
couple running backs and safeties out for the year, so
you know who's going to know who's But I know
one thing, whoever's on the field is going to play
the best game they've ever played in their lives, so
they'll be ready to go well.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Whether they play or not, it's it's a heck of
an opportunity for the running backs, for the backfield to
make names for themselves on Saturday at the Big House.
And you've got the possibility of some snow falling. It's
going to be cold. They're talking thirty two thirty three degrees.
Maybe not the best day to throw the football. But
we know whether those guys play or not, or if
(02:59):
they're one hundred percent or not. I would love for
one Bo Jackson to get going on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
I'll tell you what, that whole group has really been
impressive last few weeks especially, you know, and the last
two games we've rushed the ball from when we've thrown
the ball, so you know, they're really playing a high
leveled offensive lines and a great job opening up poles,
getting the second level blocks, and of course great job
pass protection too.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Ryan Day was loose in the press conference yesterday, Coach,
I don't know if you saw that. It was kind
of a different feel for him. I mean, the last
couple of years he's felt kind of tight, kind of nervous,
so you can see it in his face. But yesterday
he seemed pretty darn close to stress free.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
Yeah, and I think that's and I think offensively, you know,
we have to have that same attitude. We cannot be
playing cautious football. Offensively. You know, it's full throttle offense,
you know, from the get go for four quarters. Don't
be afraid to throw the ball. You know, it's a
thing where you know you got to go out and win,
not afraid to lose the game.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Coach, you just spoke about the offense. If if we
don't see Jeremiah Smith, or we don't see Carneval tape.
That changes the way Michigan's defense comes at you. You know,
you can have the safeties coming downhill a little bit
and be more aggressive. What would you like to see
Ohio States offense? How you transition for that?
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Well, the fortunate thing camp is we have a really
good set of tight ends and running backs. So you
can only throw the ball of those guys out the backfield.
You can do different formations and sessed with motion. But
you know what, the second group of receivers are pretty
good too. Don't be afraid to throw it deep.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
Michigan's got a young team coach, starting with a quarterback.
What have you noticed when you've kind of scouted out
Bryce Underwood. I mean he looks like you can't. I mean,
he's a true freshman. He's made some really good plays.
He's also made some boneheaded plays that typically a rookie
quarterback would make. What what have you seen from him
as you've honor of Michigan throughout the season.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Well, we got arguably this is the two best freshman
quarterbacks from the country going against each other. So I
think that's neat. But you know, he's an impressive athlete.
You know, he's one of the leading rushers, so he's
a dual threat guy. I think their offensive line isn't good,
is what they've had, So I think that's what they've
given up as new sacks the head uh and uh
(05:24):
he's done five interceptions, so I think the key when
he goes a rookie quarterback, especially when where they've been
struggling little bit on the offensive line.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
UH.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
In past protection, UH is first of all, he disky's
your coverages. You show him different looks. He showed blitz,
come out of the blitz. Don't show blitz and blitz,
so you know he mix it all up. Try to
confuse as much pre snap as possible. And the minute
you can get a guy hesitating a little bit or
holding onto the ball a little bit longer than normal,
(05:54):
that's when you get to him. That's when you get
sacks and maybe even some turnals they're forced him to
throw the ball into the crowd.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
That's that Matt Patricia confusion before the snap stuff that
we've been talking about. And yeah, you're right, I think
there's three first time starters on the Michigan O line.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
UH.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Pasttrack past protract protection is a little shaky. Uh, they're
They're run blocking is decent. We expect a steady diet
of Michigan on the ground on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah, you know that's the only stat really that we're
there ahead of us in terms of is rush offense.
So you know there's second to Big Ten. We're seventh,
But everything else is advantage of Buckeyes.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
Much was made last year of the whole flag planting
thing at Ohio Stadium. No one had Michigan winning that game.
They did it, they planted the flag, you know at
all heck broke loose. Uh your thoughts on a little redemption?
Do we see any of that? Do you think the
coaches are telling the guys, hey, you know what, we're
gonna win. We're gonna walk off the field graciously, and
we're going to celebrate in the in the locker room.
(06:53):
Or do you see some shenanigans happening at the Big
House on Saturday?
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Now, Doubs, we'll do that. You know, we're a class
your group. Mike won't do that. There's no doubt you
would never do something.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
Never, any question though,
