Speaker 1 (00:00):
Six forty six Mike Elliott, Columbus Morning News. Let's say
(00:02):
good morning to Roor O'Neil, NBC News Radio on the
Legacy Retirement Group dot com phone line. Government set to
reopen today, assuming everything goes well Rory with the House
vote this afternoon, but things will be a little slower
to get back to normal. And that is really the
part and parcel what's going on with the airlines that
we could see what they're saying, travel travel gedding this weekend.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Well, right, you know, Secretary Duffy was in Chicago for
our news conference yesterday trying to update us on how
it will look to reopen things. And it's going to
take a little bit of time. It's not just hey,
they're getting paid, everything's normal, right, No, you know, these
airlines have been canceling flights. That means that pilots are
in the wrong spot and that flight attendants need to
(00:45):
get back to their post city or their their hubcity,
and even the aircraft themselves can be out of position.
And that's going to take some time to work its
way back to the schedule. So the warning is that
things are going to start to get better. Actually they
already are. We saw that the number of air traffic
controllers calling out yesterday was way down. That came after
(01:07):
President Trump sort of threatened him, but also after news
of this shutdown resolution coming later today.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
And didn't Trump say that he was going to offer
or he was floating the idea of a ten thousand
dollars bonus for any airline workers air traffic controller TSA
workers that did not miss a shift, didn't get paid
but stuck with him and kept working. He was going
to try to maybe put together a bonus for them,
that's possible.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Yeah, we'll have to turn to Congress and see what
they want to do about that as well. But yeah,
he did float that idea online as a way to
reward them. You know, we've heard Secretary Duffies sort of
leaning into their patriotism as reason to come to work
and not get paid these recent days.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
So after today's vote in the House, how long do
we think until the airlines will be back to normal?
We think in a week, ten days, two weeks, or
not that long.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
I think I think a week is pretty reasonable at
this point. You know, some will be better at it
than others for sure, but yeah, I would say expect
a week and if you are traveling in the next week,
make sure you have that Airlines app downloaded on your phone,
make sure you have the notifications turned on, checking to
make sure that flight is still going to happen, because
(02:19):
you know, things are pretty fluid right now and there's
an awful lot of chaos out there, so try to
stand the cutting edge. And if you can opt out
of flot flying, you know, if it's a business meeting
in the next week or two, see if you can
make it over Zoom instead, and you know, get your
butt out of the system. They could use the seat
