Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now over to the Legacy Retirement Group dot com phone line.
He is an Ohio State Athletics Hall of Famer former
Ohio State running back number thirty four, part of our
best Buckeye coverage. Jeff Logan on the Legacy Retirement Group
dot com phone line, Jeffrey, I hope your Monday morning
is going well. How are you, my friend?
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Yeah, everything is great, and what a terrific win by
Ohio State. Maybe the Auto employ the Ohio State coaching
staff to solve that government shutdown.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Put you know, get Matt Patricia and his pencil to
work on that. He'll get it figured out right quick.
I'm sure it's a crazy Jeff. Another week, another opponent
failing to score more than nine points on the Buckeyes.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yeah, it's really interesting. Three of the opponents for Ohio
State this year yet to get in the end zone.
And it was really interesting if you watch that development
of that game. Minnesota came out with a pretty good
game plan, took the ball, winning the toss and actually
choosing the ball, which was kind of on, you know,
not normal in these games. They drive it right down
the field. Their quarterback is seven out of seven passing
(01:04):
Ohio State toughens up in the red zone and they
have to settle for a field goal, and after that
it was over. You talk about adjustments that they were
able to make, Minnesota never ever got any momentum going
the rest of the game.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
It's is this one of the more complete Buckeye teams
that you've seen in recent memory? I mean both sides
of the ball. It's just you know, Julian's saying through
for three hundred and twenty six yards two touchdowns. Carnel
Tait had a breakout game for him this year, and
then you know the defense is you know what else
do you say? It's just stifling? But this is just
(01:41):
a really balanced team right now.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Now, I think we need to be really grateful for
what we've been able to see so far through the
first part of this season. You know, there were a
lot of questions coming into the season. You've got a
brand new starting quarterback of red shirt freshman. You've got
an all new starting front four on the defensive side,
You've got a new coordinator on the defensive side. There
(02:04):
were all kinds of reasons to be concerned about was
what was going to be the formula for success this season?
But they have answered every test along the way, and
I can't believe are there doubters out there. I haven't
heard them. This is the quietest I've seen buck Eye
(02:24):
nationen in quite some time.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
The only doubters that I see are people kind of
griping about the running game. Is about the only criticism
that I have noticed. People saying, well, you know, they
got stuffed on third and short and we don't have
that explosive running back who can break it, you know,
and go, you know, seventy five yards to the house.
That it seems really nitpicky your thoughts on what's going on.
(02:48):
Something that you obviously know a little bit about is
getting the ball handed to you out of the backfield.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Yeah, you know, I've always been concerned this season a
little bit by the performance of our top two running
backs that started the season. And I felt like Bo
Jackson was a guy that gave us a good change
up and is a guy that has an extra gear
in there that's able to make things happen. And he
got the start on Saturday. I think he got rewarded
for the work that he has done. And I think
(03:15):
what Ohio State will end up doing is settling down
on about two running backs instead of using the three.
And I think that that will give these top two
guys that are going to be the chojan too, if
you will, the opportunity to get more into the game.
And I think I think the future is bright with
the running game because I really believe that Bo Jackson
(03:38):
is going to be a special back in this system.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Jeff, I have to do this first because I've been
told to Big.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
Fell it's crickets from Logan.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
Yeah, he's not having any.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Jeff and I share a great disdain for Gus Johnson,
who will be doing the big noon kickoff off on Fox,
and Jeff and I agree that he's a little over
the top. Camp He loves him, and so it's going
to be a long week for me, Jeff with with
Campy doing that Big Fellow stuff. But anyway, yeah, Jeff.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
I wanted to talk a little bit about what's been
unfolding in the Big Ten Conference, especially regarding actually Illinois,
but most importantly Penn State. How does this? You know,
Ohio State is the cream right now of the Big
Ten along with Oregon. Right so as this has started
to shape up, you're seeing a train wreck in Penn State. Illinois,
(04:34):
you know, even though they're starting to get back online,
got absolutely thrashed by Indiana, who, by the way, is
also going to be up top. But regarding our schedule,
does this is this a bit of a disadvantage as
when you, you know, do you still look at strength
of schedule because this was supposed to be kind of
a beast in the way. I'm looking at Penn State
(04:55):
right now, I'm not sure they're going to be able
to They might get blown right out of the stadium
on November first.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Well, it'd be interesting to see. I don't think anybody
saw that coming with them losing the game on the
road at UCLA, and you know, this is a team
that was winless, they had already fired their coach. It
was the only team in college football that had never
led in a game during the season. And Penn State
goes out there and absolutely gets throttled by UCLA. And
(05:24):
it's it's really hard to explain. And I think that
James Franklin, if he's going to keep his job over there,
if Drew Aller is going to complete the season as
the quarterback, he's going to have to save that room.
It's very similar to what Ohio State was looking at
following the loss to the team up north at the
end of last season. This this team for Penn State
(05:45):
is going to go one way or another. They're either
going to try and make this playoff with the two losses,
which if they if they run the table and they
beat Ohio State, they're going to get in the playoff
all right, even though you know these losses have occurred
here in the beginning of the season, they still have
something to play for. It's a matter if James Franklin
can convince those guys that there's enough in the bucket
(06:07):
for them to come back and work hard.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
But Jeff, would this hurt Ohio State? I guess what
I'm getting at a little bit in the future when
the playoff committee is looking at things are saying, yeah,
Highest State did this, that and the other. But then again,
the schedule turned out to be not as tough as
we thought. You don't think they can lose like a
top seed out of that, like if everything plays out.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
The way it should, No, I don't think so. If
you look at you know, we're playing a ranked opponent
this weekend in Oi on the road in a tough environment.
Illinois has been one of those comeback programs that Brett
Beelima has done a really good job there. I've got
to scratch my head about what happened against Indiana, but
you know, I think this is a really solid team
(06:45):
and Penn State is still Penn State. I think the
momentum will be important that Halloween weekend when they come
in here, and then we're going to have to go
on the road against the team up north, and so
I don't think we have anything to apologize for with
our strength of schedule. I don't think it's going to
hurt us.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
Camping Jeff Logan part of our best buck Eye coverage.
You're going to hear him. Next chance is Thursday night
Bucks line from six to eight from the Legacy Retirement Group.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Jeff.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
So, let's get into Illinois just a little bit. They're
five to one overall. You mentioned the head scratching loss
to Indiana. What do we know about the Aliini. It's
been a while since Ohio State's been there. I think
ten years since we've traveled to play there. What the
quarterback seems like kids got a little bit of game.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Yeah, luc All he Altmeyer's a really good quarterback. And
they've got good speed on the outside, decent receiver, is
a good running game, and Brett Beielma understands what the
Big ten is all about. I mean, he spent all
that time up at Wisconsin. He knows what Ohio State
brings to the table. I circled this game back in
the middle of the summer. You know that this was
(07:48):
going to be, you know, one of those games where
you're going to have adversity, and you got to see
how you're going to be able to respond to adversity.
And I view it as allowed at least about a
huss environment by any stretch. But the only way that
I think Illinois stays a chance in this game is
if Ohio State participates and does things that they have
(08:11):
not done already this year, meaning turn the ball over
on the road. So sixteen and a half point favorite
I saw early this morning, which is kind of interesting.
I thought it might be a little bit closer than that.
But again, these are the challenges and if you think
back to them, oh my gosh, some of the national
championship years when Ohio State with Jim Trussell one over
(08:32):
there and barely won at Illinois. I mean it was
one of those crazy, crazy games. I think we'll see
some of that. I think this could be a four
quarter game for sure.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
And the only thing I'm really concerned about this weekend
is sitting through three hours worth of Gus Johnson.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
Jeff, that's all, am. I Are you convinced that he
is indeed calling the game?
Speaker 1 (08:51):
Why is he not?
Speaker 2 (08:54):
I hope not, But if he is, I may call
him sick.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Please, don't we need your brother, We need you.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
I'll be there like butterscotch candy and goat milk.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
I'll tell you, I'll tell you where you could. You
can stick those campy
