Speaker 1 (00:00):
Six forty six Mike Elliott, Columbus's Morning News. Let's go
over to the Legacy Retirement Group dot com phone line
and say good morning, Rory O'Neil, NBC News Radio. We
are with six hours and forty six minutes into a
government shutdown. Rory, how will we be affected?
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Well, look, if this government shutdown just last a few days,
you probably won't notice it because they're still mail. The
Social Security money went out, the VA, Medicare, Medicaid, all
of them are still operational. But if this trags on,
you're going to see issues, especially when it comes to
air travel, because people like TSA agents or air traffic
(00:35):
controllers have to work, but they're not getting paid. Now
they will get their back pay, but the last shutdown
we saw went on to thirty five days. Do you
want to go a month without a paycheck these days? Nope,
And that could be a real issue. We started seeing
them do stickouts. That was a big issue last time
around that got Congress to actually broke her a deal
(00:56):
was because of disruptions to air travel. Keep in mind,
Congress or frequent flyers, they got to go all over
back and forth to their districts a lot so that
was really one of the key issues that was front
and center during the last shutdown.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Interesting, and we've got Ohio Congressman Mike Carey joining me
in about twenty minutes too, and we'll pick his brain
on what's going on here. So where do we sit
with the standoff here between Republicans and Democrats. What's what's
the biggest sticking point is to move this forward?
Speaker 2 (01:27):
So the House has gone home, so we now have
to focus on what is before the Senate. The House
pass what's called a clean cr that's a continuing resolution,
no amendments to it. They just were going to say,
let's just keep spending like we're spending until November twenty first.
They give us more time to debate the big issues.
November twenty first is the Friday before Thanksgiving. Now the
(01:47):
House past the House, it's in the Senate now, but
there are not the sixty votes needed to pass it, right.
You've seen some three Democrats go over to join Republicans
to vote for this. They need eight though. Senator Paul
is also a no, so he's siding with the Democrats there,
but he's a no on everything, and it's sort of
two different issues again. The bill is just to continue
(02:08):
spending like we are. But the Democrats see this as
an opportunity to revisit some of the things that were
passing the big beautiful bill. Top of the list those
subsidies for Obamacare health insurance premiums. They're trying to get
those brought back in, and that's been the big stumbling
block here. But both sides right now don't seem willing
to negotiate.
