Speaker 1 (00:00):
Six forty six, Columbus. This Morning News. It's Mike Elliott
on a Tuesday morning.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Let's say good morning too, Rory O'Neil, NBC News Radio
on the Legacy Retirement Group dot com phone line. We
have it's always looming, Rory. They always use the word
looming government shutdown. It's kind of funny. You think they
would get a people will get a thesaurus and find
a new word. But we do have a government shutdown
looming from midnight tonight.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
What's the latest.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
Well, yeah, won't be looming in seventeen hours or so.
We are really getting close here, and look, both sides
did have a meeting in the White House yesterday and
not a whole lot of progress to report. Both sides
seem to be pretty well dug in right now, and
let's see what happens. You know, the Republican plan is
to just keep things as they are through November twenty first.

(00:45):
They say that, you know, that'll give them time to
work with Democrats on some of their bigger issues. But
Democrats say, hey, look, we are in the minority. If
we want to this is our only chance, essentially with
some power that we can have because they need some
Democrats to cross the aisle in the Senate in order
to vote for this thing. The Republicans just don't have

(01:06):
enough votes on their own to get it done, so
that's why they need democratic support. They need sixty votes
to get it to move through the Senate. They've only
got every Republican went. They only have fifty three, and
even two of the Republicans are balking. So yeah, they
need bipartisan support to get this to happen.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
And should this happen, which it looks like it's going
to at midnight tonight, what is the potential fallout? What
stays open, what shuts down?

Speaker 3 (01:31):
Yeah, key things to remember. Social Security checks are still
going to go out, The VA is still going to
be open, you know. Some of the things it's a
little bit more vague. Normally they share some of the
shutdown plans, but in this case they're keeping them a
bit more private. That's a decision by the administration about
whether or not every national park will close, or what
the rules are going to be here and there. So
some of it is a bit trickier, But for most Americans,

(01:55):
for most of what they experience, the benefits they receive,
they'll stay the same, But programs like Wick. You know,
they have money now, but they're going to go through
that money pretty fast. So something's going to have to
happen relatively quickly otherwise we start seeing problems. If this
goes on a couple of days, not really big deal.
If it goes on more than a week or.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
Two, Yeah, well, I was going to ask you remind me.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
The last shutdown was twenty eighteen, twenty nineteen, for about
a month or so.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
Yeah, thirty five days, and that one was pretty that
was the most. I think it was the longest on paper,
but yeah, that was a significant impasse this time though
Republicans controlled the House and the Senate, but still not
enough Senate majority there in order to push anything through
and stop a filibuster.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
