Speaker 1 (00:00):
On the Legacy Retirement Group dot com phone line. Let's
welcome in Marty Banister. Marty, of course doing the play
by play high school football on the CW Columbus. Also
the voice of the Ohio University Bobcats. We'll talk about
the Bobcats. There's some stories there coming up. Marty, good morning,
how are you.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
I'm doing great. Good to be with you guys again.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
I feel like we just wrapped up talking about the
high school football playoffs back in the fall. Marty, So,
I hope you had a great summer because it's over.
Man football. High school football is back.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Yeah, there's about a forty five minute break between seasons
now or cork fields that way.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
It's great. It's the best time of the year. There's
no question about it.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
There's no doubt. So let's dig in. I think there's
a handful of games tonight. Most teams get started in
earnest tomorrow, and let's start with Let's start at the beginning.
Speaker 4 (00:46):
Let's start at the top.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
D three state champs Bishop Watterson sixteen and oh last season.
They've got a formidable opponent tomorrow night in Big Walnut.
In that game I believe is at Ohio Dominican.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
That's correct, and that's one of the games that I
think everybody is really excited to see how this one
plays itself out. As you mentioned Waterson, which ran the
table last year at sixteen, I know they've got so
much talent coming back, and I think a lot of
folks are picking them to win Division three again this year.
But let's be careful. Big Walnuts very good. They run
the football. They've got one of the best running backs
(01:17):
in the state of Ohio with Nate Burley, a great
quarterback in Eli Stun That's going to be a heck
of a matchup tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
How about Pickerington North, They've got they're loaded this year
with a bunch of D one bound players and again
they've got a tough one and they've got Lake with
Saint Ed's.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
They do with Jared mox the quarterback you're talking about,
who leads the offense North? And how about Nate hill
Rich at pickering and North. Give the guys some credit.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Scheduling.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
They play out at Lakewood Sat. Ed tomorrow night, as
you mentioned, and then next week they go right back
up to northeast Ohio and take on Cleveland, Saint Ignatio
and then they played Pickering in Central.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
Yeah, that's that is that is a gauntlet, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (01:57):
Speaking with Marty Banister, talk at some high school football,
the Olan tangis you've got Liberty against Olan TANGI again,
these are teams that you know had great seasons last year.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
I mean Liberty was I think there were fourteen.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
And two Yeah, Division one state champions and the athletic
here the owen Tani School District. Guys they win Division
one titles in football, boys basketball, baseball, and boys and
girls lacrosse. I mean there are athletes in that district,
aren't there and that they have tomorrow night. That's gonna
be a fun one to watch. They've got a couple
of the best defensive players in Central Ohio as DJ
(02:32):
Standon and Kagen Geppart. That's gonna be a heck of
a football game.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
What kind of team does Upper Arlington have this year?
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Well, again, I think it's one of those whenever you
have a coach Buttermore coach.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
Team, you have a good chance. And that's the I
think one of the strengths of what Upper Arlington does.
And we know their history and their success over the years.
They've got a great deal of talent coming back, and
they're one of those teams kind of I don't want
to say flying under the radar, guys, but people are
keeping an eye on U A and Division one.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
I saw the stats Pickerington Central is taking on Gehannah
Lincoln tomorrow night, and I saw the stat that Pickerington
Central has not lost the league game since before the pandemic.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
That is impressive, it is.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
And remember too, they kind of get bounced around whenever
the occ which I think might be realigning again as
we speak right now it's eight forty one in the morning.
They seem to relign about every twenty five minutes. But
they're in that one division that encompass a lot of
those schools on the eastern edge of Columbus. So they've
been the dominant team, there's no doubt about it. And
(03:31):
they've got a heck of an opener tomorrow night with Gahanna.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
Yeah. Absolutely.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
What about Olin Tangi Berlin, And to say, I think
they're at the sales tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Night at the sales smart and I like Martin Norriy
a lot the head coach at Olan Tangi Berlin. I mean,
we talked about Nate Hiller AT's schedule a moment ago,
Martin Norriy does the same thing with Berlin. They like
to challenge themselves. They have the sales as you mentioned
that next week they play Upper Arlington, so they had
a great run last year. They do lose some talent,
but that's a very well coached football team, man, and
you can never count them out.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
It is wild how many big games there are in
week one, Marty. It's it's like coming out of coming
out of start the season, out of the shoot it is.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
And I'm excited about the one we're gonna call tomorrow
night on the CW. We'll be at Westernvil North for
Western Real North and Western Real Central. Western Real Central
has one of the top freshman quarterbacks in the entire area,
and that's Nate Miller. The third If the last name
is familiar, he's the nephew of former Ohio State quarterback
Braxton Miller. And the head coach is what's the Real Central,
Josh Frank.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
He just raised about this young man.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
And of course Westernville North if you want to take
it one more step Buckeye related, of course, they're head
coach of Stan Jackson.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
It's gonna be a fun one.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
And don't forget our very own Roy Hall Junior over
at Gehanna too. I mean, he's one of the assistants
out there. So a lot of former Buck guys staying
busy and you and you're working with our very own
Jeff Logan on the c W two. And that you
said that game tomorrow night, Westernbveld, Central, Westernville North.
Speaker 4 (04:55):
You guys do such a good job. You are so good.
You and Jeff together are really mary Well.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
I appreciate that, but I will tell you Jeff will
say it's Jeff and me, not me and Jeff, So
Jeff spectacular. We've had a relationship that dates back to
the latter half of the eighties, and Jeff's just.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
The best in the world to work with.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
I really enjoy those games and I appreciate the concert absolutely.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
I'll be watching and check it in on that game too.
So let's take a minute and talk a little.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
Oh you Bobcats football too, because you are the voice
of the Bobcats. They start the season, I think, is
it next Thursday. It's a week from tonight, right, A
week A.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Week from tonight will be in wonderful Piscataway, New Jersey
to see the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and the former Ohio
State assistant Greg Giano, who's trying to free some life
back into that Rutgers program. And that's going to be
Ohio goes into that game, obviously an underdog because you're
stepping up to play at a Big ten school. But
that's a winnable game for Ohio next Thursday night, and
(05:48):
it would not surprise me to see the podcast walk
out of Rutgers with a victory.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
Next wouldn't that be southing? Do you still have the
thirteen Navarro kid at quarterback?
Speaker 3 (05:57):
The Mid American Conference number one quarterback from last season
he turns this year?
Speaker 2 (06:00):
Absolutely?
Speaker 1 (06:01):
And then and then September thirteenth, you've got the Bobcats
coming to the Horseshoe for a night game.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
That's the rumor I live that there's a game that
day in Columbus. Yeah, but now I will say this
before Ohio comes to Ohio State. On September sixth, the
Bobcats play host to West Virginia in Athens, which you
don't see Power five schools make those kind of trips anymore.
And West Virginia will be in appens on September the sixth.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
Those are three really good games to start the season
for the Bobcats. You're on the road at Rutgers, you
host West Virginia, and then you come to Columbus and
take on the bug Eyes.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Yeah it's a little bit challenging, isn't it a little bit?
A little bit it's.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Good for you, yeah, exactly.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
But there'll be fun games and anticipation is very high
for the defending MAC champions from Athens.
