Speaker 1 (00:00):
News Radio six to ten wtv N.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Steve Halladwagon twenty four to seven Sports on the Legacy
Retirement Group dot Com bone Line talking some Buckeye training
camp this week.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
Steve, good morning, how are you.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
I can't believe we're what twenty two days away from
Ohio State Texas.
Speaker 3 (00:17):
Yeah, it's coming at us the speed of light. Did
believe it? I mean, they they started practice almost six
months to the day from when they won the national championship,
So it was a very short offseason obviously for this
team and the players and the coaches. And we got
to see three days of practice last week when they
got started, and I got to tell you they have
(00:40):
got a lot of talent at a lot of positions.
So this is another very talented Ohio State team. They
just lacked some valuable playing experience at some positions. But
they're going to get it very quickly, starting out with
what looks like it's going to be a one versus
two matchup to open the season. Ohio States had anything
(01:01):
like that before and should be a red letter day,
so to speak. There on that Saturday when the season.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Begins, it'll be electric, no doubt, Steve. So let's the
big one is obviously the quarterback battle. We're still hearing
that is neck and neck between Julian Saying and Lincoln Keenholtz.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
What are you observed before you those two?
Speaker 3 (01:20):
Yeah, I think that the Saturday scrimmage that we got
to see last week about sixty plays of eleven on
eleven in full pads. Julian Saying made a number of
good throws and really seems to be locked in with
Jeremiah Smith, who's obviously the All American wide receiver coming back.
They've got Carnell Taate and Brandon Ennis who are also
(01:40):
really outstanding at wide receiver and look like they're all
three prime to have a great year. They've got a
great tight end McClair as well, comes over from Purdue.
So saying to me, I thought had just the better
day on Saturday, but it's just one day. I think
Lincoln Keenholtz is still a tremendous quarterback, and I think
(02:03):
they're gonna be okay either way. It really says a
lot that, you know, unlike last year when they went
out and sought Will Howard to come in as a
veteran quarterback, they really didn't dip their toe too much
into the transfer portal for quarterbacks this last offseason. So
they really did believe in saying in Keyholts, and I
(02:23):
think that's being shown with the way those guys are
practicing right now.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Steeve hell Wagon twenty four Sports talking about Buckeye training camp.
So the quarterbacks is you know, it'll it'll shake out.
It seems like it's going to be Julian saying from
everything I've heard from you know, people that have been
to practice and on inside in the program, that he's
got the slight edge. They're not saying that necessarily, but
you know, we shall see. What about the running backs,
we haven't heard a lot about that that that crew
(02:49):
after you know, the loss of Trayvon Henderson and Quinside
Judkins to the NFL.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Who do we have this year carrying the rock?
Speaker 3 (02:57):
Yeah. I think it's very interesting that James P. Bulls
going into a sophomore year. He was number three last
year behind quin Shawn Judkins Trevon Henderson, and he only
has about fifty carries in his career last year as
a freshman. He's very explosive, and it was kind of
telling to me that in the spring they really didn't
even use him in the spring game. It was kind
(03:18):
of like put him in bubble wrap and ship him
to August. You know, that was kind of the feeling there.
And you know they've got CJ. Donaldson who comes over
from West Virginia. I about two thousand yards in his
career at West Virginia in three seasons, so he's got
a chance to He would probably be the killing sewn Judkins,
whereas James Peoples would probably be the traveon Henderson. Are
(03:40):
they going to live up to what that duo did
last year a thousand yards each? I tend to doubt it,
but they're going to be more than fine. I think.
At running back, Sam Dixon is also there. He's dropped
Williams from his last name and he now goes by Sam.
Dixon is probably there as the third or fourth guy
in both Jackson a really talented freshman with a great name,
(04:03):
Bo Jackson running back name Cleveland, Ohio. He's come in
and really shaking things up. So they've got four maybe
five guys there that are really very good, and I
think you'll see a rotation similar to what we had
last year.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
So James Peeple says he's the more elusive, maybe quicker
of the two. If you're doing the thunder and lightning,
he is the lightning and CJ.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
Jnaldson will be your thunder.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
He's got some size, he's got the experience, he's going
to be your short yardage guy that if he breaks loose,
watch out. But he's got the physicality that you're going
to need in the back to field there for Ohio State.
And then we also have our debuting some new coordinators
this year. Brian Hartline on offense, He's obviously been with
the program for a while, and then new this year
(04:49):
on the defensive side of the ball is Matt Patricia.
Is there going to be any kind of step backward
there or I mean it's still a Ryan Day led teams.
I wouldn't expect there to be any change.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
Yeah. With Heartline, he was the coordinator two years ago,
and then they brought in chip Kelly last year and
Heartline worked alongside of him. And the hope is that
Hardline learned, you know, so much working with chip Kelly
last year. The difference from two years ago. Ryan Day
was calling the place two years ago. He gave that
up last year for chip Kelly, and I think he
(05:21):
kind of preferred that, even though Ryan Day great offensive
coordinator in his own right, even as the head coach,
but it's going to be a heartline calling the plays
on that side. I liked what I saw at the
scrimmage last week. They were given the defense off balance
pretty good, So I think he's learned a lot from
Chip Kelly. Other side. Mattew Patricia, he's coaching college football
(05:41):
first time in twenty years. He's been in the pros.
He was with New England Patriots. Coached in six Super
Bowls during this time with the New England Patriots with
Bill Belichick and won two of them there as a
defensive coordinator. Did not have a very good tenure one
and a half seasons as the head coach at the
Detroit Lions. Was out of football pretty much last year.
(06:03):
Worked as an analyst that I believe the Philadelphia Eagles
just kind of helping out. But yeah, I look for
Patricia to carry over what Jim Knowles did and tweak
things a little bit. He talks about guys being able
to play more than one position. That way, when you
give the opposing team a look at the line of scrimmage,
there's a lot of deception involved in different roles for
(06:25):
those defensive players.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
Steve, tell me a little bit about the defensive ends.
I know you have bo Atkinson who comes over from
North Carolina transfer. But there's another kid.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
He's a true freshman.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
And I apologize his name escapes me, but I hear
bo Atkinson has made quite an impression at camp.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
Yeah, bo Atkinson coming over from North Carolina. He actually
went through spring football with Bill Belichick and decided after
spring football he wanted to leave. He comes in. He's
got more sacks at the Division one level than anybody
on the roster at Ohio State because Kenyatta Jackson and
Katon Curry only got to play a little bit behind
year and Tuoy Milowell that they had last year. The
(07:02):
pressure you talk about is Epi Tatana Lay. He was
a late arriving freshman and he'll be wearing number forty
four and people will say, my goodness, is that jt
out there? What's going on? But no, it's it's a
new player. Epi satana A. He's kind of mixing things up.
But Kanada Jackson, the junior is the guy that everyone
(07:23):
is raving about his work ethic and how he's the
light bulb's really gone on for him number ninety seven,
and we'll see once the season begins if he can
provide that pressure that they have to have.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
Steve Hellawagen twenty four Sports. Are you a noon game
guy or are you a night game guy?
Speaker 3 (07:38):
Oh God, they're gonna they're gonna kill me for saying this,
But work in the games, guys. I like name because
you know, I'm in the car, I'm having the first Budweiser,
you know, watching the end of the three thirty games.
You know. So I'm good with the noon games. But honestly,
the Tennessee game was, you know, a religious experience. I
think for anybody who was there loves Ohio State football.
(08:01):
That's how it used to be back in the old days.
