Speaker 1 (00:00):
Of course, said the big story of the weekend, Ohio
State Buckeyes get the win. Let's talk about it, shall we?
On the Legacy Retirement Group dot com phone line. He
is former Ohio State running back Ohio State Hall of
Famer number thirty four, part of our Best Buck GUYE
coverage team.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Jeff Logan.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
It was a glorious day on campus on Saturday, Jeff,
for a Buckeye victory.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
How are you, sir?

Speaker 3 (00:21):
I'm doing terrific and what a great way to start
the season with you know, obviously terrific weather. Everybody wanted
to complain about the fact that we had a noon
kickoff and they wanted that evening game. But I thought
the environment down there pregame and during the game was wonderful.
And I think Ryan Day and the rest of the

(00:41):
football team really appreciated the fact that Buckeye Nation showed.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Up, no doubt about it.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
And I think it was no surprise amongst you know,
people who followed like you and Matt and Bill and
I even talked about it a little bit last week
about you know, we expect this to be a low
scoring affair that they're going to see, You're going to
see both defenses up, and you've got skilled, if not
inexperienced quarterbacks, and that was I mean, I didn't think

(01:08):
twenty one total points. I might have guessed forty total points.
But talk about the job that Matt Patricia's defense did
for the buck.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Guys, well, I think it was special. We all thought
it would be the under just simply based upon the
history of this game. You go back to the Cotton
Bowl game back in January of this year, that Ohio
State one. They win twenty eight to fourteen, but one
of those was the scoop and score by Jack Sawyer.
So the defense had to score to get twenty eight

(01:35):
points in that game. So these were two really solid
defensive football teams, two of the best most talented teams
I think in all of college football. And Matt Patricia
came out with a little bit of a different scheme
that I don't think that Texas was quite prepared for.
I don't want to get too technical on this, but
they were moving their defensive ends into basically linebacker positions,

(02:01):
moving them all around on that side, and I think
there was a lot of second guessing going on by
that offensive line by Texas. So the other part of
that is Mike the play by our brand new quarterback,
Julian sand While he wasn't spectacular, he was perfect and

(02:21):
that's all that Ryan Day asked him to do was
go out there and win. And he took care of
the football and executed the game plan to perfection.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Yeah, he didn't take a sack, he didn't turn the
ball over. His stats aren't, you know, world beating stats.
I think he was thirteen of twenty one hundred and
twenty six yards. But he didn't need to do anymore.
I think they once they realized the defense sort of
had control of this game. I would imagine they kind
of maybe shut down the playbook a little bit and

(02:50):
just said, hey, kid, just hang out of the ball
and just get first downs.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
Yeah. I think it's a victory. You look at it
in terms of what could go wrong with a brand
new starting quarterback had never been in that environment at
all at the college level, and I thought he really
measured up quite nicely. And if you talk about his stats,
thirteen out of twenty in not included in there are
four drops that occurred during the game, so you know,

(03:16):
you make his number sixteen or seventeen out of twenty
and everybody is screaming that we may have the next
best quarterback in history. I like the kid. I think
his poise out there was beyond his years. I was
very impressed with the way he handled things. He made
one mistake in the game. It came near the end,

(03:37):
and it's a costly mistake that he'll learn from, when
he threw the ball away at a point in time
when we did not need to stop the clock. He
was scrambling and he should have gone ahead and run
the ball, kept the clock running, or made Texas use
one of their timeouts, and he chose to throw the
ball away when there was no open receiver. So that's
one he will learn from. But if that the biggest

(04:00):
criticism we have of Julian saying, I think we're doing okay.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
Yeah, the poise, I mean, you would not have guessed
that he was his first time starting at quarterback for
the buck Eyes. And certainly, and it's probably a situation, Jeff,
where this was the best of both worlds. You get
the win. It wasn't perfect. It wasn't a you know,
a forty five to seven blowout where everything was clicking
and you had the you know, the backups in in

(04:24):
the fourth quarter. But that's probably ideal if you're a coach,
because you get the w and now you've got stuff
to work on.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
Yet, absolutely, as Ryan Day said afterwards, he couldn't be
more happy for his football team. They did exactly what
he wanted him to do. But there were plenty of
areas where they were going to be able to coach
them up, as they say, And I'll be curious to
see it as press conference today. You know how many
of those guys graded out as champions in this game,

(04:52):
meaning that they had champion type performances on an individual basis.
You know the other side of this is, Mike, we
start off with a game like this one versus two,
The next couple of weeks are certainly not going to
be the same variety of opponents. But Ohio State's got
to find a way to continue to get better against
teams like Grambling in Ohio University.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
So would you have rather rather played Grambling last week
and then Texas? You know, where you can kind of
work the bugs out. You do get that forty five
to seven, you know, just thumping and the backups are in,
and then you can prepare for Texas or are you
happy with the way that it was scheduled?

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Will you come in, you rip the band aid off.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
You've got a formidable opponent, defenses are strong, you get
the fourteen to seven win, and now you can kind
of take you deep breath and get in and tinker
with some things.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
You know. It's interesting if you talk to the Texas
fans this morning, they probably would answer that question. We
wish we had another game before the Ohio State game.
You talk to the Ohio State fans, and it's perfect
the way that it lined up, because you got the
w so a A. In a perfect world, you would
love to have in your preseason an opportunity or two
before you play a Power four conference gate or Power

(06:06):
four game like that, And we had that with Notre
Dame a couple of years ago. We didn't have the
luxury of that with all of our new players coming
into this game. So from a preparedness standpoint, I think
the coaching staff deserves a lot of credit for getting
this team together ready to go because they were going
to be tested right from the get go, and I
don't think there was anything in there that we could

(06:28):
be totally critical about.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Before the game Jeff Arch.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
Manning was the betting favorite to win the twenty twenty
five Heisman Trophy, which is it's sort of ridiculous that
they even put that out there this early in the season,
But by the end of the game he had fell
to fourth as betting favorite for the Heisman. Now, I
don't know if again you mentioned Texas fans waking up
and having all these questions. I don't know if Manning

(06:52):
just laid an egg or if you know, the Ohio
State defense really forced him into that, because he did
not look comfortable at all until late in the game,
and by then it was too late.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Yeah. I think a lot of that had to do
with the fact that the defense was confusing them in
a lot of different ways, hiding coverages, and I thought
a lot of the throws by Manning looked almost side
arm as opposed to coming over the top. And Mike
I will go on the record as saying I am
not one hundred percent sure that Manning was all that healthy.
It looked to me like there were a couple of

(07:24):
times where he was stretching that throwing shoulder, and I
don't know if he was maybe tweaked before the game,
if he had some sort of an injury or he
got it during the game, but I wouldn't be surprised
if later on down the road we find out that
there was some kind of of an injury that he
was kind of fighting through. But this was not his

(07:45):
best day by any means. Ed.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
Yeah, it's a good point. I hadn't heard that yet.
That's a good observation. We'll have to wait and see
before I let you fly. We haven't talked, you know.
We talked about Matt and I talked about the Jeremiah
Smith did looked okay, had a couple of Max Claire
had to drop.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
But we haven't talked.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
About the running game much. Running game was just kind
of bad. It was again, but they didn't need it.
And that's the I keep going back that anything that
you could kind of point the finger at that needs work.
You're like, okay, it needs work, but they still got
to win and they did just enough.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
Talk about the running backs something you know a lot about.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
Yeah, you know, it was interesting because the longest running
play of the day for Ohio State was only eight
yards and that is pathetic by Ohio State standards. But
I think you have to give credit to the Texas
defense for part of that. But I think that Carlos Lachlan,
who is the running backs coach for Ohio State, will
spend some film study with his young running backs and

(08:46):
explain to them that there are going to be opportunities
where you've got to make people miss. You've got to
find a seam. It's not always going to be perfect
up there. And you know, we talk about these running
backs having this thing called twitch. They've got to be
able to make that move and just make it happen.
Sometimes it's not going to be perfect. And some of

(09:08):
those eight yard runs I thought could have turned into
eighteen yard runs had they been a little bit quicker
to the whole, had they recognized what was going on.
But again, this is week one. Let's see how we
go over the next couple of weeks and see how
that running game goes.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
Great analysis as always, Jeff, thanks for the time. Have
a great week, my friend. Well listen for you Thursday
