Speaker 1 (00:00):
Six forty five in the morning, Mike Elliott, Columbus's Morning News.
Let's say good morning to Rory O'Neil NBC News Radio
on the Legacy Retirement Group dot com phone line. I
hope you had a great weekend, Rory. And the situation
in Minnesota, Wow, this was a kind of a jaw
dropping story. This guy has been apprehended, accused of killing
Minnesota lawmakers. The House speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband
(00:24):
also shot State Senator John Hoffman and his wife. They
are recovering. But what's the story on this guy's Vance
Bolter was his name. He was picked up yesterday last night.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
I believe he was after a two day man hunt
and thanks to a tip from a resident there who
apparently saw Belter on one of those trail cameras that
he had set up and alerted police, who set up
a perimeter and ultimately closed in on his location. They
used drones and helicopters with infrared to try to pin
him down. They got Belter to surrender without shot being fired.
(00:57):
No law enforcement were hurt. So now he's in custody
facing multiple state charges second degree murder too, counts oft
attempted murder as well, and of course you know that
let's see how those charges change when the case actually
gets to a grand jury. But yeah, there's still a
lot to piece together about this guy's background and about
(01:17):
his motivation.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
And he impersonated a police officer right to get into
the homes of these lawmakers, right, you.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Know, banging on the door at three o'clock in the morning,
essentially saying, hey, I'm a cop, open up. And when
they opened the door, then started his rampage at both locations,
first going to the home of that state senator, Senator
Hoffman and his wife, then later going to the home
of the former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband.
It was the Hortman's who were who died from their injuries.
(01:46):
The Hoffmans are still recovering, you know.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
And I hate making these things political, but in this case,
it is interesting because he did attempt to, you know,
murder one couple and did murder another couple, and his
politics seem a little kind of complex. I mean, he
did shoot Democrats. He was working in the Tim Walls,
(02:11):
you know, the Democrat governor. He was working in that
administration appointed by Walls. He allegedly voted for Trump, but
he also had no Kings protest flyers in his car.
He seemed like maybe he's a little confused.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Well right, and again let's see, I'm not sure if
he's talking to investigators as they try to figure all
this stuff out. You know, in some ways, he was
very well prepared, and he had the fake mask over
his head, the bald mask, he had a cowboy hat
to cover. You know. He did lots of things it
seemed that were smart, but then didn't really have a
getaway plan. Maybe he always assumed he would be killed
(02:44):
by police or take his own life. But yeah, so
there's a lot still to figure out in this as
to what the motivation was. But clearly, now that he's
in custody, it's a huge sigh of relief, but you know,
still raises concerns that you know, people even in these
state state roles of state representative or state senator, face
(03:07):
these kinds of threat
