Speaker 1 (00:00):
Mister golf. It is Ray Hustick Ray, a chicken sandwich fan.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Where are you going? Where'd you go to chicken sandwich?

Speaker 3 (00:09):
Chickil a?

Speaker 2 (00:09):
There you go? No doubt, hard.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
To beat Ray, it is. It is that time of year.
It is Memorial Week. We've got the pro am. It
just went off about ten minutes ago. Little soggy in
Columbus this morning with some light rain, and would imagine
the courses is probably handling it pretty well at this point.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Yeah, golf course is one of the best, always in
great condition, no matter what the conditions are. Really and Jack,
you know, was one of the things on his mind
was to make sure the players had a course that
was in fantastic and consistently great shape when they got
to Columbus. It's going to be a great pro am.
I saw Nick Saban's playing Ryan Day. You got actors

(00:50):
like Rob Low, Peyton mannings here, Zach Brown is playing.
So it'll be a fun day for the prim and
I got prim a prium. Interesting fact for you this
history wise, you know, this is the fiftieth anniversary of
the tenth Dispatched Charities Proram, which was played in nineteen
seventy five before Mierfield officially opened, and you know it

(01:11):
was the seventy six was the first memorial. Seventy five
was the last official pro am for those and they
were a lot of fun. In seventy five I was
there at Kedfory Kubert Green in that proram, but Bob
Hope and Ben Crosby and Jackie Gleeson and Wilson were
among the amateurs that played in that. So it was
a star studed event all ten years that rotated between Sciota,

(01:35):
Brookside and Columbus the first nine years, and then Jack
outed to Millfield for the tempts just to see how
his course would handle having you know, fans and having
professionals in and all that kind of stuff before the
before the actual first memorial.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
It seems like I'm looking at the pairings for the
and the Star Times today for the program, it seems
like anybody that's considered a favorite that's a playing this
weekend is going off as early as possible, that maybe
some of the lesser known names are going a little later.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
That's by design, right.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Of course. I mean you had Scotti Scheffler out early.
Let these guys get out and get it over with
so to speak, if the if the weather turns bad
in the afternoon, they're not messing around with the rain
delays getting ready for a big tournament. And we've got
a great field. Again. Every year this tournament ends up
with one of the strongest fields in golf, and we're
going to have I think we're going to have a
great weekend of golf. With of course being so wet,

(02:32):
a lot of players are going to be in contention.
It's not the firm and fast that Jack nosis likes
to see for the Memorial, but there'll be a lot
of birdies. I think there's going to be some low scoring.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
You mentioned the field and how good it is minus
one player, and that's Roy O'Neil or Rory McElroy.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
Not roy O'Neil also is not here.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
He is not here now. He is in Orlando. I'd
spoke to him last half hour.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
He's uh, Jack kind of I don't want to say
bristle a little bit, but he He was asked if
Rory checked in with him, and he didn't.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
He didn't call him to say he's not coming. He did.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
In Jack's look, he's got to make his own decisions,
to make his own schedule, but it kind of seemed
to bother him at his press availability yesterday.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
Yeah, it's one of the things that's that's hard when
you when you build a golf tournament like this and
you have the greatest players in the world typically here
and once in a while you have somebody that doesn't show.
It's it's disappointing personally for him, and you know he
he used to reach out and make those calls to
try to get those guys to come and play. He
doesn't do that anymore. You know, they they know what it,

(03:39):
what it means, and what this tournament means. Rory has
made some missteps in his career, certainly from a r
R standpoint, but he's a great player, you know, pure
not of talent, maybe the best in the game right now.
But we've got plenty of people to talk about that
are going to be hearing, fun players to watch, like
Scottie Scheffler, who's on a tie like tear at the

(04:01):
moment in terms of his performance the last couple of years.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
Ray Mister Golf, Ray Hustik joining me on the Legacy
Retirement Group dot Compom. I've got my buddy Andy Stalton
Studio with me this week, Ray and Stealty is about
a nine or ten handicap in his own right, and
he got a couple of questions for you.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
It's Stelty. What do you got, hey, Ray?

Speaker 4 (04:19):
How are you today?

Speaker 3 (04:21):
I'm great. I'm good to hear your voice.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
Hey, I got a quick question. It involves Scotti, Scheffler
and the Live what they're doing. Does what Scotty scheffer
doing now does it diminish what he's doing because of
some of the great players that have left and I
know he's on a Tiger Woods run right now, but
like some of the great players are not playing currently

(04:45):
on the PGA tour, they're on the other tour, does
that diminish anything that he's done.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Yeah, some people will make that argument. I don't think so.
I mean they play together in the major championships, and
I think he proved, you know, who's the best player
in the world right now now at the PGA Championship
winning when you know De'shambo and Rom and Koepken, a
lot of these guys, I mean they were missing cuts.
They were playing fifty four good holes. The Shambo played

(05:11):
fifty four good holes at the Masters and then fell apart.
On Saturday, didn't put it together. So if you want
to say, well, if they were playing full schedules, they
would be competing and maybe they'd be winning, you could
say they might. They made the decision to leave. I
don't think it changes anything in terms of Scheffler's dominance.

(05:32):
I mean, look at a thirty one under part win. Yeah,
earlier that year. You know, I find it hard to
say that. Well, you know, he's went in by a
little bit here or there, he's only won a couple times.
But when you look at the numbers and the actual domination,
I don't think it diminishes it at all.

Speaker 4 (05:49):
Yeah, he's he's one hundred and thirty under part for
the year. Well, an eleven tournaments. Great, so that's he's
getting it done. One more quick question, how long can
Jack make this this course to make it harder? I
know there's a redesign in twenty twenty. How long can

(06:09):
he stretch it out and make it harder for these guys.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
Well, they've run out of real estate pretty much, so
it can't be much longer. The tenth te is pushed back,
you know, it's almost up in the dining room at
this point. You know, the first te's back there into
the putting green. Now you've got you know, fifteen, can't
really go back any farther than part five. Seven is
the same way. You're back into the roads and the
houses and things. The golf course stands a test of time.

(06:36):
It's a course where, yeah, you've had guys shoot you know,
twenty under a long time ago when they got before
it was redesigned. For the last few years, I mean,
Scotti shot eight under last year to win, and I
think I think it will beat that this year. I
think we'll be back up in the mid to high
teens or maybe more under. Part just because how wet
the golf course is supposed to rain against Saturday, and

(06:56):
so a lot of darts thrown, a lot of birdies made,
and I think, yeah, what you.

Speaker 4 (07:02):
Said, yeah, what you said earlier about it brings more
guys into the into the chase. More guys will be
in and at the end the leader board to be
tight with Birdie's the lower.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
It will and I think you'll see names that maybe
you don't recognize. You know, you'll see some players up
there who aren't necessarily the marquee players, but they're still
going to be I think Scotty will still be there,
you know, hanging around Sunday afternoon when time comes. But
we've got a lot of guys playing really well right now.
I mean Justin Thomas, you know, the birdie leader on

(07:36):
tour one at hilton Head just a few weeks ago.
I think, you know, he loves this place and he's
a great iron player, maybe the best in the game
right now. And you have to be that at Mirfield,
So I expect him to be in contention if there's
a lot of birdie scept Strake is won a couple
of times. He was fifth last year. I see no
reason why he couldn't grab the trophies. You know, he's

(07:57):
a he's a birdie machine as well. He was twenty five,
twenty six or something like that of Palm Springs. So
it's going to be a lot of fun to watch
for fans because it is going to be a you know,
just a blood bath of red numbers on the leaderboards.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
One of the fan favorites Ray Tommy Fleetwood. Is he
is he going to get a win? He's my guy
right now, is he? I think he's currently the number
thirteen golfer in the world and still hasn't picked up
a tournament win.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
What's what's the deal with Tommy? Is he going to
get a win? And could it be this week at
Mierfield Village.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
Yeah, I think it could be. Typically, Tommy's not a
high ball hitter, which you need to be at Mirfield
most years, not so much this year with the Greens.
You know, youc Tron Darts or Belcrow or whatever you
want to say. His lower ballflight won't hurt him this year.
He's a streaky player, so if he gets the cutter rolling,
he's a guy that can make a lot of birdies
in bunches. So I think that would be a nice

(08:47):
star course pick.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Yeah, I love it. That's my guy. Ray Hustik
