Speaker 1 (00:00):
He is number thirty four Ohio State Hall of Famer
former OSU running back Jeff Logan joining me. LOGI, good morning.
It was looked like a mini horseshoe at Wrigley Field,
about eighty percent of those fans wearing scarlet and gray
on Saturday afternoon.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Yeah, wasn't that incredible? I mean, a historic site to
be able to go in and play a very unusual
game in a baseball stadium, and the Buckeye fan, Buckeye Nation,
really took over that building and they loved the views
from above when it looked like a scarlet out in
(00:36):
somebody else building. So it was a lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
I want to talk about the Indiana game coming up
this weekend here in a moment, but let's kind of
go over some of the high points. It took him
a quarter or so to kind of get started, but
the Buckeye offense was clicking in the second quarter. Carnell
Tait two touchdowns, a couple of passes from Will Howard.
You had Quinn Judkins run for a couple of short
one yard tds. Jeremiah Smith had his third one hundred
(01:01):
yard game. They were firing in all cylinders.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Yeah, It's funny when you talk about those statistics there
at the end of the football game. You got to
wonder what anybody would be critical thing they on Saturday.
But again another slow start, and I think what we
all have careful of is not judging the success of
the football team based upon the first drive or two
(01:28):
of the game. Let's look at the entire body of
the park. And when you do that, you look at Mike,
the way that things went with the efficiency at the quarterback,
the way the defense played was again you're not going
up against a juggernaut in the Northwestern offense, but the
defense was absolutely spectacular. Again, they gave up their first
(01:49):
touchdown in what they've only given up one touchdown from
the offense in twelve quarters. How do you complain about
that as far as the defense is concerned.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
It's a great point. Sonny Styles had a couple of sacks,
He had a breakout game. Jack Sawyer career high seven tackles.
So yeah, the buck eyeed did its job. And again
to your point, Northwestern is not a huge challenge, but
you still you got to go in and do that.
You can't fall asleep, even just for a moment, and
something weird happens and things get sideways.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Yeah, just look around college football anymore. I mean, the
upsets are a plenty in Ohio State is not participated
in any of those true letdowns that everybody else seems
to be having. So kudos to the leadership of this
program and Ryan Day for keeping his players on time
and on task.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Jeff, I agreed with you earlier about the way the
offense is performing that people have to realize that they're
not flashy, they're just efficient, and I like that. I
call it quietly putting up points, Like before you know it,
all of a sudden, you're up twenty one to seven.
What I wanted to ask you though about the defense
is regarding the way they blitz Ohio State. You know
(03:01):
they're coming with everything, but I've noticed that the middle
of that field opens up a little bit, and it's
happened with multiple quarterbacks this year. How do you adjust, Like,
do you back someone off on a blitz in order
to keep the middle of the field closed off a
little bit?
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Well, it's hard to do everything, and when you blitz,
you're exposing yourself to something that will hurt you because
you're bringing the house and that means you've got man
coverage with all the defensive backs running away from the
play covering their receivers, and what you got to make
sure of is that those blitzers remain in their lanes.
(03:37):
They got to make sure that they don't allow for
the quarterback to be able to sneak out the back door.
And one of the things that they coach these guys
on is that if you're one of the blitzers and
they pick you up and it doesn't look like you're
going to be able to get there, maybe what you
need to do is drop back now and become the
scout and take care of that quarterback. So again, continue
(04:00):
to adjust, but I like the aggressiveness of this defense,
bringing the bringing the house at the quarterback.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
Jeff Logan, one of the rock stars on our Best
Buckeye Coverage squad of Jeff Ohio State Health steady at
the number two spot in the College Football AP Top
twenty five poll. Oregon remained number one after a very
close call at Wisconsin. Notre Dame and Alabama jumped up
a couple of spots. George's back in the top ten.
And we never never would have guessed, Jeff, if we
(04:28):
were talking back in August that we'd be talking about
Ohio State and Indiana at a top five matchup this
weekend at Ohio Stadium.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Yeah, ex audition like any unlike any other Indiana week right.
I mean, I mean, you know, all season long, Mike,
we've been talking about are they for real? Three and
oh four and oh five and oh six and oh
and if you look at their schedule, there's a lot
to be critical about, but you cannot argue with the outcome.
(04:58):
I mean, the coaching staff over there has done a
terrific job. They plugged all the holes that they had
via the portal. They went in, got a great quarterback
out of Ohio University in this kid Rourke, and they've
got some skilled players, and defensively they're playing at a
very high level. Having said that, they have played absolutely
(05:18):
nobody and this is going to be by far the
toughest test that they have seen, both offensively and defensively.
But you know, Ohio State opened as a ten and
a half point favorite. It went to eleven or eleven
and a half later this morning, and I kind of
like that. I thought we might be a fourteen point
favorite going into this game, and I feel really good
(05:41):
about Ohio State's opportunity.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
I think you're right. I mean some people are a
little shocked or saying you've got a top five matchup
and year anywhere from eleven to did some sites have
it at twelve and a half. I think you're right.
I think twelve to fourteen sounds about right. And it
just goes down to that strength to schedule from the Hoosiers.
They haven't they And I said it, you know, if
(06:04):
Michigan is the best team that they've played, that tells
you all you need to know.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
Yeah, And I think that's an accurate statement. I mean,
the team up north is the most complete team that
they have played, and that is a little scared when
it comes down to what we'll go about the team
up north without much offense over there, pretty solid defense,
and you know, maybe they're the best offense they have
faced all season long from a total offense standpoint. Is
(06:33):
the Maryland Terrapins? I mean, why goodness? Yeah, So this
will be brand new for them and are they going
to measure up? Time will tell, but Ohio State will
be playing in their third Top five matchup. As we know,
they're one in one. Both of those games were on
the road before then against Penn State and at Oregon,
(06:54):
where you know we've survived and won the Penn State
game lose by one on the road. I think the
place will be rocking on Saturday, and I just I
am really looking forward to this opportunity for Ohio State
to prove that they are an elite program.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
It's interesting they had they had the bye week, so
maybe you get a couple of guys healthy there and
I don't know, do you throw in a couple of
wrinkles if you're Indiana into into the playbook to maybe
catch O High State off guard that and then you
throw in the Kurt Signetti Signetti contract eight years, eight
million dollars a year. That that timing was interesting as well.
(07:31):
So talk about that from a moment from an Indiana perspective.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Well, I think it was important for Youana to step
up to the plate. They did it in the nil
thing because they did raise enough money to bring in
some good players. But Kurt Signetti has been nothing but
spectacular for this program. He was the breath of fresh
air that nobody thought would ever take the Indiana job
and do the do the work that he has been
(07:57):
able to do so quickly over there, and they must
have been getting some feelers, because what athletic directors will
do as a courtesis is that if you have an
interest in a coach, you are going to call the
other department and listen, We're going to have a conversation
with his agents and so on and so forth, and
(08:19):
so I guarantee you they were getting interest from all
over the country in Kurt Signetti. They figured they better
slam the door as quickly as they possibly could.
