Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, it's about to eight forty on the Legacy
(00:02):
Retirement Group dot com phone line. Look who it is.
It's mister golf Ray, Hustik Ray. How are you so
good to talk to you.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
I'm doing great, Mike K great to hear your voice,
and had a great weekend. Lots of early mornings last week,
getting up to watch the Open Championship live in the
middle of the night. But Scottie Scheffler with his seventeenth
career win, he's up to I don't know, like one
hundred million in career earnings now for a couple of
years and four major championships and he's got three of
(00:30):
the four to get to the career Grand Slam. And
he just keeps rolling.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Yeah, all eyes on the US Open next year for
his chance to make it a career Grand Slam. It's
the second major of the year. And was never really
in doubt. I mean, I don't know that he led
wire to wire. I didn't see any golf this weekend,
just getting back from vacation. But going into the final round,
I think Rory McElroy called his win inevitable.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Yeah, after the second day, he was leading by a
shot Friday and you know, he and his caddy Ted
Scott talked earlier in other major championships about, hey, we
got a you know, we're ten under after two days.
Why can't we just get to twenty under after four
days and see if anybody can catch us. Well, he
didn't get to twenty. He got closed at to seventeen.
(01:18):
And there's some good golf played behind him. Harris English
made a run, he got to thirteen under. Rory and
some other guys had you know, good good runs yesterday.
It was it was actually a pretty decent leaderboard save Scotty.
I mean, we had a guy at thirteen, one at twelve,
and four players at eleven and ten, and you know
it would have been more exciting, I guess in terms
(01:38):
of watching. But he is a master at making it
look super easy, just as all the great ones in
sport always have.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Right Scotty Scheffler his stats, his first seventy starts, zero wins,
zero cheat, zero majors, the last seventy six seventeen wins
and now four majors. What has he figured out to
not only dominate but just close people out? I mean,
no one even comes close. He finishes better than I
(02:08):
haven't seen anybody like it since Tiger.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
I think it's just that you get used to it.
Right you're on tour, You're you're learning what it's like
to travel, You're learning which parts of your team are
the best. You know, he's got a coach he's had
since he was a little kid as a swing coach.
But you're adding other people into the mix, short game people,
and you know you're working on your the business side
of things. And you know he's a young guy, he's
(02:33):
not yet thirty, so uh, there's a lot of learning
going on when you when you first get out on tour.
And he played really well early on. He didn't have
any wins, but he certainly had a bunch of top
tens and he was got himself in contention and then
you know, things began to click and when you get
some confidence, it just builds more, especially in this game,
(02:54):
because you can't you're not reacting to anybody hitting a
ball at you were thrown something at you were trying
to tackle you or block you or whatever check you
into the boards. It's you know, it's your game, as
best you can do, and at the end of the week,
you see who did best relative to everybody else, And
I think it's just a it was a learning curve
in terms of getting to the winning part of it,
(03:14):
and now that now that he's done it, it's like, yeah,
I mean, I just I'll just keep cruising. Let everybody
else make the mistakes.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
Mister golf, Ray Hustik joining us on the British Open.
When you talk about golf's all time greats, I mean
the two names that come to mind Tiger Woods, Jack, Nicklass.
You could expand that list. Of course, is Scotty approaching
that Tiger sphere? Is he? Is he approaching that bubble
that includes Jack and Tiger.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
I'll let you know in fifteen years Tiger. You know,
Tiger did it for a long period of time. Jack
did it. I remember the money list used to be
the way we ranked players. For Jack's first seventeen years
on Toury never finished worse than fourth on the money list,
and so he dominated for a long time, as did Tiger,
(04:03):
you know, over decades. And Scotty will have to see
how he does. And I like that he called his
the comparisons to Tiger silly in his press conference yesterday.
He's like, Tiger's got fifteen majors. I have four. Let's
let's just pump the brakes a little bit here, and
it's great to be included in those conversations. And it
is certainly something that over the last two years. Yeah,
(04:26):
these past two seasons you want to put up against
any past two seasons in the history of the PGA Tour. Yeah,
we can include him in that conversation for sure enough.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
Ray. A lot of people thought the pressure was going
to come off Rory after he won the Masters. You know,
he finished the career Grand Slam, so but the final
round it seemed like there, Rory, he wasn't he wasn't finishing.
There were a lot of shots that didn't look like
he was really committing to the shot. Is there still
pressure on him? Does he feel it or do you
(04:57):
feel it?
Speaker 2 (04:58):
I think he had more pressure on him yesterday for sure,
because it's such you know, he's an hour from where
he grew up and he loves Irish golf and the
fans were clearly all rooting for him and Shane Lowry,
but but Rory, especially to see him making charge and
maybe win it. I think he's passed the hangover of
(05:21):
winning the Grand Slam. I mean it was on his
mind for eleven years or whatever, trying to get to
that point and asking answering questions about it every single week.
Then when he finally did it that, you know, just
everything's like, Okay, now what's next. What am I going
to focus on? What's my next goal? What's my position
in the game, what's you know? I mean, starts thinking
about his legacy and all that kind of stuff. And
(05:41):
I think, you know, from from all the battles he
had represented a PGA Tour against the lift stuff, and
you know, I mean, he's he has had a really
heavy bright spotlight on him for the last many years,
and I think he's finally come off of that. He
had a great tournament. I mean, he finished what sixty
(06:02):
six Saturday, sixty nine yesterday and finished in seventh place.
And you know, if it weren't for Scotty, he'd had
a chance, I guess, let's say, but I don't think.
I think the pressure is off now Rory's finally back
to just playing golf.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
Mister golf, Ray Hostake. We've got a number of tour
stops on the schedule, but I'm looking at a couple
of months from now, end of September. You've got the
Ryder Cup this year. It's at Beth Page Black in New.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
York, and we've got some guys who are trying to
show Captain Keegan that they're worthy. Patrick Reid missed the cut,
trying to prove himself. Moricaba missed the cut and he's
outside the top six right now in points. In terms
of the guys that are guaranteed spots, you know, Kegan'll
have six picks of his own. But Wyndam Clark certainly,
(06:48):
he's sixteenth currently in points and he did really well fourth.
Chris got up third after you know, winning in Scotland
and finishing third, finishing yesterday third he was thirty. Sorry,
he's outside the top twenty in Ryder Cup points currently.
So there's some guys who really helped themselves out. Brian
Harmon's another one that's outside that top six who you know,
(07:12):
they definitely made a statement to the captain to say, hey,
we want to play and we want you to pick
us for this thing. So the real question or what
do you do with the live guys? I mean, Deshamba
had a great weekend, horribill start seventy eight in the
first round at the British but DJ finishes twenty third.
Dustin Johnson Brooks captain Patrick Reed, like I said, both
(07:33):
missed the cut. I think you got to pick Bryson.
I don't know what you do with these other guys.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
I think you got to pick them. I think because listen,
team USA needs a win. It's I think the last
win that we've had over Europe was maybe four or
five years ago. But even before that, I feel like
USA has been getting creamed in the Ryder Cup too
against Europe. So you picked the guys that gave you
the best chance to.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Win, absolutely, and you want the guys that are hot
right now, right and so those are the guys that
that I think Kegan will be looking at. The question
really will become based on how Keegan plays in the
playoffs is does he pick himself or maybe even qualifies
on his own. Right now, he's right now, he's tense.
I mean, he could legitimately qualify on his own, and
(08:16):
that would be a lot of fun to see. Certainly,
it's been a long time since that's happened, and it
would be it would be it would be pretty incredible.
But let's say he's outside the top six, he's seventh
or eighth in points. Maybe going into the thing, does
he pick himself? That will be the really big question.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
That's funny.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
Well, we'll check in with you and when you get
closer to the Ryder Cup and get some analysis. Always
good to talk to you, Ray, mister golf, Ray Hustik,
thanks for the time. Have a great week, my friend.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Yeah, thanks a lot. It's always fun.
