Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, let's go over to the Legacy Retirement Group

(00:02):
dot com phone line and say good morning to Scott Palmer.
I h R a top fuel driver at National Trail
Raceway this weekend the IHR outlawed Nitro Series. He is
the People's champion Scott Palmer. Scott, good morning, sir, how
are you hey?

Speaker 2 (00:19):
I'm doing really good. Thanks for having me.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
On, absolutely, man, I appreciate you making some time for
us this morning. So, man, you've been doing this pretty
much your entire life, racing cars, drag race and funny cars,
top fuel. Do you still get that when you're strapped
in at the starting line and you're watching the tree
come down and it's the light turns green, you still
get that little pump of adrenaline.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
You definitely still get that pumped. I mean, that's that's
one of the things. One of the winningest drivers in
drag racing history is John Forst, and you know he's
he retired at seventy five years old, so I'll figure
I got about fifteen years left. So maybe I'm just
gonna keep on keep on. You give in it all
I got, But you know, I don't I don't know
if I want to do it that long, but I
mean you still get that feeling. It's it's one of

(01:06):
the few sports in the world that you don't have
to be young. You don't have to be twenty five
years old to do so.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Do you have do you do you have?

Speaker 1 (01:15):
That's so that's a great question, is do you You
got to stay in somewhat shape?

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Right?

Speaker 1 (01:19):
You can't just you know, hit the hit the twinkies
in you know the Mountain dew all day, can you.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Well, you know you can't. Finefe define good shape? I mean,
come on, define good shape. I mean you've got to
have a little curz lot in there because you know,
PBR is one of our sponsors, and you got to
have a few beers if you're if you're associated with that.
But uh, you know you can't. I mean, yeah, you
got to be in somewhat shape. But I definitely I
would definitely not say that I have a workout routine,

(01:48):
that's for sure.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
I love the honesty. Scott Palmer, I hi a top
fuel driver.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
In town this week tomorrow through Saturday at National Trailer
Raceway and here brand So what's your top Speed's.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Got three hundred and thirty miles an hour is top
speed about top speed. The record now is three forty
one in these cars, you know, so that's fast, but
that's you know three three twenty to three thirty thirty
five or so is kind of a normal. I mean,
you'll see some three three twenties to three thirties out

(02:23):
here this weekend. I mean, that's that's my that's my prediction.
You know, we're we're really excited about this week and
it's been about fifteen years since we've been to National
Trailways Away, so maybe maybe ten years, but it's been
a while. And there's what a beautiful facility to have
this race at and we're really excited to come down
there and throw down some numbers. Now we're having two

(02:46):
qualifiers on Friday, so I will tell you that qualifying
two qualifiers only really does is gonna you know, it's
gonna make this a great show because everybody's going to
have to do their best to get to the finish line.
A lot of times in these cars we overpower the
track just trying to go fast because we're we're racing
with our ego instead of with our with our brain,

(03:08):
you know. So so we go out there and we
try to throw down low et. So with these two qualifiers,
it's going to pull the reins back a little bit
on us, and I think it's going to be a
really good show because of it.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
Now, what does that mean?

Speaker 1 (03:21):
You sometimes overpower the track for people that don't necessarily
know all the inside you know jargon when it comes
to drag racing.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
What does that mean?

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Well, these cars, these cars accelerate to over one hundred
miles an hour in less than a second, so so
the acceleration that it takes up up to like six
g's so it's basically like a fighter jet, but you
got two back tires trying to hold the traction to
the ground instead of thrust. So so it's it's not

(03:50):
difficult to overpower the track. So the clutch management and
all the gadgets and computers on these cars control all
the wheel speeds, so it really makes it a challenge.
That's one of the biggest challenges about running these top
fuel cars, top peel cars and funny cars that'll be
here this weekend are super technical nowadays. It's not like

(04:11):
it was in you know, nineteen ninety or whenever. I
started in two thousand with a top fuel car, these
things were not nearly as high tech, so it's come
a long ways, but you still have that one factor
two rubber tires on a concrete track, so you have
to make that stick to make it, to make it work,
and when it does, and it smokes the tires, and

(04:34):
it's basically it's like you hitting a water spot and
spinning your tires when you're driving car, but doing it
at three hundred miles.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
An hour three and twenty nine point forty two miles
per hour. That's your top speed and that takes you like,
what about three seconds to achieve that.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Yeah, that's it takes. It takes three point three point
seven three point eight seconds to do that. Yeah, we've
run a little faster than that since that, since uh stat.
But but that's that's pretty good. I think I think
you'll see what the heat in the summer, you'll see
three twenty because as soon as the heat comes out, you,

(05:10):
like I said, you have to back them down just
a little bit down track to keep them from spending
the tires. So but you'll see some big numbers. You're
gonna see well over three hundred miles an hour all weekend.
It's it's gonna be a show.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
What does that feel like?

Speaker 1 (05:21):
I mean, you said, what six g's that's got that
put that puts you back in your chair man, that's
gonna that's gonna put you back.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
You know, I live in Missouri and I got you know,
all my buddies are just down home, you know, you know,
farm boys, And they asked me what it's like because
I'm in my little town of Cassville. If I had
a pulling truck or a or a tractor, i'd be popular.
But I can go to the local cafe and they
they'll ask me about my drag, sure, but they really
don't care.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
They'd rather know.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
If I got if I got a tractor this week,
just to be realized. But they'll ask me what that's like,
and I tell them, you know, I compared to this
if you backed up against a concrete wall and you
had a Mac truck pull up there and just kind
of let the clutch out on you and it just
feels like it's crushing you for three and a half seconds.

(06:09):
So for that amount of time, it just feels like
all the wind is going out of your lungs are collapsing.
And used to before I had one, I always wondered,
one of these guys, they only drove that car for
you know, four seconds, Why are they out of breaths
when they get there? Well, I didn't realize it, but
you know it collapses your lungs when you're under acceleration.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
That's crazy.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
You're out of breath when you get there. You know.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
That's why I was asking about, you know, the physical fitness.
You know, you gotta again, you gotta gotta be able
to tolerate that for four seconds. I mean, you can't
have you know, a bunch of PBRs and then get
in the car and do that. I mean maybe after
how important is and I know the answer to this,
but talk about reaction time again. You're sitting at the
line and the tree hits green. I mean you got

(06:54):
to have you know, just three, you know, three decimal
place reaction time get that car off the line.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
Definitely, a reaction time wins races. I mean, you can
have a you can have a car that's a tenth
of a second slower and if you have a better
reaction time, you can beat that car to the finish line.
So if you're if you're a car that is lacking performance,
that week you better step up in the driver's seat
to make up the difference. So there's a lot of
pressure on that. And you know a lot of these

(07:23):
guys that we race against, these are drivers. You know,
they focus on driving the car only. And what you're
going to see this weekend, about half the teams or
more that are that are coming to this race. These
are all drivers, owners, tuners. They have a lot on
their plate.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
Like us we do.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
We do everything ourselves. We have some help from the
World Championship teams and some of the bigger teams help
us for sure, but we don't have we don't have
a hired tuner or a hired driver. We go out
there and we do it all. So when you when
you pull up to that starting line, you know, it's
a little hard to separate the driver from the owner sometimes.

(08:06):
And I had I had one of the one of
our crew guys at Vegas or one of the races
this year, earlier in the year, I should have got
off the gas pedal because the car was not running
like it should have and it was tearing itself up.
And one of our crew guys, Todd Hass said, yeah,
that was the that was the driver, and the and

(08:27):
the owner have an argument about half track on that run,
and the driver won the argument, but the owner lost
because we tore.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
Up about sure the cars right. Speaking with Scott Palmer,
i h R.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
A top fuel driver in town this week at National
Trail Raceway. So and you mentioned your partnership with PBR
Professional bull Riders, and you've actually gotten on.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
Top of a bull and done some bull riding before,
haven't you.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
Oh no, I got on top of a bull exactly.
Brady Sims one of the PBR riders. He's retired now,
but he's still he's still associated associated with him. They
actually set me down on one of those bulls in
the shoots. But that's as far as I got one.
My butt in the back of that bull and my
legs went down beside it. I was out of there.
No chance I would ever do that. No chance so

(09:15):
you would if I maybe a late night on a
Thursday or Friday night, possibly I might do that, but
not not in my right mind.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
Never.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
I mean, you'll get behind you'll get in the in
the you know, behind the wheel of an eleven thousand
horsepower dragster, but you won't get on top of an
angry bull in a shoot right now.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
Now, we've had some bull riders stood in the car
and they've said the same thing. But I do believe
there's a big difference in that. And I think if you,
if you ask enough of those bull riders, there'd be
plenty of them that would get in that car and
stab the gas. And I would venture to say there'd
be very few drag racers who would get on a bull.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
Yeah, that's crazy, that's so fun.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
It's all I mean when I say that, I'd say sober.

Speaker 1 (09:58):
It's all a ball perspective, my man, it's all my perspective. Well, Scott,
you're very gracious to spend some time with us this morning.
Scottie Palmer IHR a top fuel driver. You're gonna go
see him this weekend National Trail Raceway and hebron starts
tomorrow through Saturday of the IHIRA our Outlawed Nitro Series.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
Hey, good luck this weekend, man, I hope you kill it.

Speaker 2 (10:18):
Hey, thank you a lot. I really really look forward
to this weekend and we'll be out there at National
Trail waste for it all weekend. All the fans come
by our pits, hang out, we warm up the car,
we call it. We wack the throttle, we seek the
clutch is what it is, and it's super exciting. We
usually have a big crowd behind our car. After hours,
we'll be at the PBR bar in Columbus and phil

(10:40):
and those guys down there are taking good care of
our team, so we'll be down there supporting and representing
PBR and doing our best to win this race.

Speaker 1 (10:48):
Well, we'll be watching for you, we'll be rooting for you, Scott.
Thanks again for your time, have a great time this weekend.

Speaker 2 (10:53):
Okay, thank you a lot. Thanks for having me
