Speaker 1 (00:00):
We have a studio full of people, and I feel
oddly underdressed. But joining us in the studio is the
Ohio Army National Guard, and we've got the top dog.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
It's Brigadier General Matthew Woodrof. Good morning, Thank you, General.
How are you?

Speaker 3 (00:15):
I'm great, how are you? Thanks for coming in this morning. Absolutely,
thanks to bring all these people too. Absolutely, it's quite.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Com Yeah, as you should. We do have some business
to attend to is the reason why you're here. We'll
get to that in a minute, with a partnership with
the OAB, But I.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Want to talk.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
You know, we've got Veterans Day coming up on Monday
and a lot of events and things happening over the weekend,
but I wanted to talk about the Ohio Army National Guard.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
You know, what is it you guys do every day?

Speaker 3 (00:42):
So every day we prepare for America's worst day, So
we train and get ready to respond to federal missions.
And then we also have that dual role as a
state entity as well, so we prepare for support to
Ohio citizens and at the call of the governor. So
it's a very busy training cycle taking care of our
people to ensure that they're ready when needed.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
What is the difference between the Ohio Army National Guard
and other branches of service.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
Yeah, I would say the biggest differences were a multi
mission force. So we have a federal mission, we have
a state mission, a community mission. We're the only organization
Army and air in the National Guard that has that mission.
So when the governor calls, we can respond immediately to
the state's needs or other states.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
And it's not just Ohio either.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
And were you guys involved with some of the hurricane
relief and rescue and.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
We work for Yeah, from the army perspective, we had
a Chinook helicopter and crew that responded to North Carolina
and did a lot of transport of equipment, supplies, and
personnel when needed to ensure that the citizens of North
Carolina were safe. And then from the airside, we also
sent an engineer element to Florida to do to re removal.

(01:53):
And then they also sent their fatality search and Recovery
team to North Carolina.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
And are those men and women back home now or
they still there? They are all back home? Anybody in
the room make that trip? No?

Speaker 1 (02:03):
Okay, Well, yeah, we've got We've got a lot of
National Guard folks in the room, So just check and
speaking with General Mattwood or if Ohio Army National Guard.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
So why should somebody consider.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
National Guards as a path in the in their careers
are starting out.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Yeah, I think there's a couple of reasons. One, there's
a portion of our population that has a propensity to serve,
that they want to do something greater than themselves. And
if you're that kind of person that loves to serve others,
the Ohio National Guard and the Ohio Army National Guard
or a great avenue for that. The other elements would
be I'm looking for how do I get through college?
And pay for college? It's very expensive and student loans.

(02:40):
The National Guard pays one hundred percent tuition to state
universities and then a large portion of private universities as well.
Aside from that, we also pay for your trade schools
and benefits to do that. We have medical bet, there's
tons of benefits. If you're a legal US resident but
not a citizen yet, we have a path the citizenships.

(03:00):
So there's all kinds of opportunities for everyone in the
population to serve.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
What a great springboard too, and a great education and
then ultimately a great career too.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Yeah, and you've got some folks who do you. I
want to take a moment and talk to you. Staff
Sergeant Alvin Holloman. You're the recruiter, right, You're the guy
in charge of bringing young men and women to the table. Yes,
that's correct. So again you want to piggyback off the
General's statements. There is you know, when you're out meeting
some of these young folks who are interested in the
Ohio National Guard, what are you talk.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
To them about?

Speaker 4 (03:30):
So, like General Woodris said, we are being on education.
We have a lot of kids who they wonder, well,
what do I have to do? Can you guys pay
for my education? Do I have to go to war?
Do I have to do this? I want to stay
in Ohio. One good thing about the National Guard is,
like General Woodriff said, we are in the state of Ohio.
So you have some kids who don't want to leave

(03:51):
their families. They take care of their mom or dad.
They can stay in the state of Ohio and serve
one week and other month in two weeks out the summer.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
Yeah, it's uh, it's such a great option for a
lot of young folks in fact, you've got one sitting
to your right. Yes, we've got a young man cadet
Miles Lily. Uh, you're new to the guard. What what
made you want to choose the Ohio Army National Guard?

Speaker 5 (04:14):
My strong desire to help people. I've always wanted to
bring some form of service to my country. I thought
it was only right. Plus, like not really a lot
of people in my family has been to the military,
so I felt like, you know, maybe I can be
the first one, and maybe I can probably influence one
of my other family members to.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Try and join. Man, that's who I sho. I just
want to just want to help people. I think it's
very admirable. Friend. What's how long you've been in?

Speaker 5 (04:43):
Uh, I've been on in for like almost a year.
I enlisted last December fifteenth.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
And how's the experience these guys treating Okay.

Speaker 5 (04:52):
Yes, they're they're treating me okay, really good people, like
really really good people.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
Well, we're apprec at your service. Thank you for joining,
and it's going to be a great career for you,
I'm sure. So congratulations. So let's talk about one of
the reasons why we're here.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
General.

Speaker 1 (05:08):
You know, we've done a partnership with the OAB and
it's the non commercial sustaining announcement program also the public
education partnership and Iheart's been involved in that, so talk
about that a little bit.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
Yeah, So we've had a great partnership I think it's
over twenty five years with the Ohio Association of Broadcasters
and so it's kind of mutually beneficial where we help
take care of those organizations and the radio stations and
TV stations throughout the state of Ohio. But for us,
it gives us the opportunity to get our message out

(05:39):
about the benefits of service, and so we like to
come recognize those events and those stations that are supportive
of that. And really that's what it's about. It's about partnership.
It's about how can we help serve the communities across
the Ohio And I will tell you there is no
better way to reach the community than local radio and

(06:01):
local TV.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Amen. Amen, And we're very appreciative of what you all
do it well, thank you very much.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
Feelings mutual by the way, and our market president iHeartRadio Columbus,
Chris Foley, is joining us and Chris, you've obviously received
the award from the OAB and the National Guard.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Talk about the partnership for a second.

Speaker 6 (06:19):
Well, it's pretty amazing. I mean, the more that we
can help our communities stay safe with the efforts that
you do, the better we are. And I've learned a
lot just from spending time with you all this morning,
how impressive it truly is. And when you think about
the options as you're looking for a career, whether you're
coming out of high school or you're looking for a change,
being able to work with incredible Americans right here in

(06:41):
our backyard, I couldn't advocate more. When you think about
the fact that you get to work as a team
and do and lead with purpose and help our backyards
or be called upon from anywhere, we couldn't support you
anymore because that's so crucial.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
Well, when you think we talked about the the selflessness
of you know, the commitment and going to places that
nobody wants to go to, like a hurricane ravaged area,
and these men and women go there and they sacrifice,
you know, their lives to go and do that, and
you know their personal lives to go and do that,
and you know it's not just here in Ohio. So
we absolutely appreciate you guys coming in today. And where

(07:21):
if people wanted to if this inspires somebody to hear something,
or they know a young person that maybe would be
fit for this track. Where can people find out more
about the Ohio Army National Guard.

Speaker 4 (07:30):
You can go on our website go Army dot guard
and this information on how to join. You put your
name contact information in A local recruiter will reach out
to them in that area
