Speaker 1 (00:00):
On the Legacy Retirement Group dot com phone line. Coach
Bill Conley, you've got your tickets reserve. You probably still
have old Tiger Beat magazines at home.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Bill, I'd have to check under other magazines.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
That I have.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
That's right, Coach Bill Connley, part of our best Buckeye coverage.
And boy, Saturday, what a beautiful day for a Buckeye
victory fourteen to seven over Texas and the game that
really propelled the Buckeyes to be number one in both polls. Bill,
both the AP and the coaches poll have OSU at
the top of the heat.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Yeah, who would ever think you would score fourteen points?
Speaker 3 (00:35):
You move up to number one.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
It was a great game. It was old school football, physical,
defensive football battle the trenches and the buck guys came
out on top and some new faces this year. Man
named it a great, great opening game, fun to watch.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
It was fun to watch, and you and I talked
about it last Wednesday that we kind of previewed the
game and we said, this is going to be the
battle of two really good defenses.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
And sure enough that played out.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
They sure did. And I'll tell you the way our
defense held there to run those two running backs are
really special. They're gonna have a great season, and obviously, Mike,
we know we might see those Longhorns somewhere down the road.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
You know, that's a really good point.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
And the way that the playoff is set up now,
I mean, you could see a team a couple of
different times at some point depending on how Texas does.
And one of the storylines going into that game is
the two inexperienced quarterbacks in Julian Saying and Arch Manning.
And one of those quarterbacks made mistakes and the other
(01:42):
one did not.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
To me, that's the difference, no.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Doubt about it. You know. You know, arch Manning still
hasn't proven himself down there. We talked about that last week, Mike,
that you know, the little critic wasn't going in and
he didn't do anything to help his case. Obviously last weekend,
bet to you, I was really excited only how you're
saying played mistake proof of football, but how the coaching
(02:05):
staff was so well prepared and didn't ask him to
do things maybe he couldn't do yet. But he really
managed the game well for a first time starter in
Ohio Stadium against Texas. Outstanding.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Yeah, and they seem to kind of double down on
that strategy. As the game went on, they noticed this
is the coaching staff and credit to coach Day and
Brian Hartline. On the offense, they realized they didn't really
have to do much. I mean, you know, you're up
to touchdowns. Your defense is getting the job done, So
why would you need to get creative and get cute
(02:38):
and just you know, keep it close to the vest.
You don't want to you have to ask this kid
to do too much because you saw what the defense
was doing exactly right.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
That defense, by the way, they held Texas to like
one hundred and fifty seven yards in the first three quarters.
They were on off the field and are red zone defense. Wow,
they took off from last year. And that's for two
years in a row against US, the Texas team has
struggled in the red zone.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Texas was one of five bill on fourth down last Saturday,
and they got two red zone stops including the goal line.
You know, Tush push there when Manning was trying to
get in and Buckeye stopped him.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
So defense looks good.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
And you know, in credit to Matt Patricia and I
will raise my hand as somebody that had questions about
him in the college game. I mean, he didn't coach
football at all last year, and you know, he obviously
was very good with Belichick with New England, didn't have
a great stint in Detroit as the head coach and
hadn't coached college at the college level in some time.
(03:41):
But boy, he came in and he he knows his
personnel and he figured it out.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Yeah, they really came well prepared. Matter of fact, that
push I called a tush retreat because we drove their
offensive line back into his lap. He couldn't go anywhere.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
So, you know, it is kind of a letdown. Coach
Bill Connley, by the way, part of our best buck
Eye coverage. It's kind of a letdown with all the
hype and all the attention and all the analysis going
into the Texas game, and now you know, we're dealing
with the Grambling State Tigers who haven't had a winning
season in about six years. How do you you know,
(04:18):
how do you prepare a team for this when you
know you're you're coming down from the high, you're the
number one team in the country. I would imagine you've
got your your your second team and maybe even in
some cases your third team going to see some action
on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
How do you get the guys up for this one?
Speaker 2 (04:34):
Well, I'll tell you what. Tell them they get there,
you get the job done if you want to see
more action. And I think this will give the buck
As a chance to look at their next quarterback, Lincoln
keenelds uh so. I'm sure they're getting that worked out.
I don't know how much we can see zu he's
saying the game, but you know you got to stay freshman, Mary,
who you played the Let's tell how coaches worry about.
(04:56):
I'll tell you exactly what coaches worry about. To have
a letdown and before and a letdown in your technique.
You're gonna win a game, but you know you hate
to come out and just look sloppy doing it. Yeah,
but I could be honest with you. The best action
will probably be at halftime because they're bringing the world
famous Grambling State Marching band. I was going to have
(05:19):
State Bucket marching band.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
I was going to bring that up.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
I mean, if nothing else, you're going to see a
really really good halftime show with both really good bands.
There's no doubt and Bill, there's not even a line
on this game. I mean, Vegas thinks this is going
to be such a dog and it's going to be.
I mean, do you spot Grambling fifty five points then
and go from there because it's not going to be
a fair contest.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Now, I'll tell you what this is one you coaches
will probably second half might try to figure out how
not to score because you don't embarrass him or something
like that. But this The only thing about the Grambling
State program is they really you know, they haven't been
real good recently. They have a great football tradition and
they've had two hundred players go on and play in
the NFL.
Speaker 3 (06:02):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
So historically, you know, Eddie Robinson one of the greatest
coaches of all time. He coached you know, he got
his first dad coach in Abertghamley State. He was twenty
two years old.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
That was in nineteen forty one.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
And he coached for fifty five years the head coach.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
That is that is impressive. I didn't know that. You know, hey,
I want to get to know that enemy here in
just a second. We didn't talk about Ohio State's running game.
It was it was not it wasn't what we were
used to I mean, we were spoiled last year, but
you've got CJ. Donaldson, the transfer from I think West
(06:40):
Virginia getting most of the carries. You know, I would
expect you'd see the running game pick up a little
bit on Saturday against Grambling.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Yeah, exactly right. The thing we did that we did
when the time of possession pretty good, which makes up
for some of that. So yeah, not so much how
much yards that you're timing of. When you got those
first downs and kept driving the line, kept the ball
away from Texas, I think that was the key.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
Sure, sure, all right, Bill, So you've got the Grambling
State Tigers coming in Grambling, Louisiana and Know Thine Enemy.
You'll hear the full segment tomorrow night on Bucks Line
from the Legacy Retirement Group. But give us a little taste,
a little know Thine Enemy appetizer for the Grambling State
Tigers on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Well, you know, Mike, we thought Texas had some strange loss.
Let me tell you this one. You know, if you
bite someone with your teeth, it's a simple assault, But
if you have false teeth, it's an aggravator. You're really gonna.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
Go, Well, what's the difference I mean, is it the
what's the difference to fake teeth and real teeth.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
Well, that's a weapon. I mean, that's a weapon.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
Take your teeth out and bite somebody that way. I
don't know.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
Here's the other thing. If you're ever in Louis this
is important and you have a little too much to drink,
be careful because it's twenty years in prison for urinating
in a public water supply.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
Just twenty years. I feel like you should get life
for that.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
This is kind of like the Texas one. You know,
you don't want to pass gas in an elevator. This
one I think falls in that category.
Speaker 3 (08:22):
I think that one stuck with me too. Bill, Thank
you for that.
