Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now on the Legacy Retirement Group dot com phone lines,
we go behind enemy lines. Let's go over to State College,
Pennsylvania and check in with Steve Jones, the play by
play voice Penn State Nitney Lions Football. I say, enemy line, Steve,
You're a good guy. You've been on before. You always
do a good job for us. How are you this morning, sir, Mike?
Speaker 2 (00:18):
It feels so sinister.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
No, nothing sinister about it. You're you're you're a pro.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
You've been doing this for a while in State College
and got a great game. Get top five matchup number three,
number four, going at it to noon kickoff.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
The biggest first question I got to talk about is
the health of quarterback Drew Aller. James Franklin says, it'll
be a game time decision. What's what's your insight there?
Speaker 3 (00:45):
What do you know?
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Yeah, that would probably be it because he gives them
the entire week to get ready and so they can
make a final call on exactly where he is. He's
a tough kid, there's no getting around that. He's Ohio
tough as a matter of fact. Yeah, and so because
of that and the fact that you've got a guy
that has twenty starts in his career. There's not going
to be anything during the course of the week of practice.
(01:07):
He hasn't already done one hundred times already. So game
plan wise, his ability to understand the speed of the
game and so forth, that's not going to be an
issue because he's made twenty starts in the course of
his career, so that you can make a later call.
And a guy like that, as compared to a younger
players that's a younger player, would be a call probably
(01:28):
that would have to be made earlier.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
Sure, And you know, I watched a little bit of
the the Wisconsin game, Penn State Wisconsin game, and you
know he went down with a knee injury and your backup,
BO is it prabula hebuela prabulah. He came in and
I'll tell you what the kid, The kid earned his
He earned his keep that day.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
So I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
I mean, is if if Drew does go and maybe
has a shaky start, you think they would hesitate to
maybe make a change mid game.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Well, Mike, to be honest with you, Bo, what he
did on Saturday night didn't surprise me. But then again,
I'm there every day, so I see what he's capable
of doing, and so when he came in, I wasn't
surprised at how he played, and his style of play
is different. That's where I give James Franklin and Andy
Colton they can credit. They don't do square peg, round hole,
(02:17):
and some coaches do that, like, this is how we play,
and this is our offense and this is what we run.
Bou brings certain skills to the table that Drew doesn't.
So they just accentuated his skills a little bit better runner, quicker,
especially in the open field. And because of that, he
opened up the running game against Wisconsin, especially for K
Tron Allen, and that part helped accentuate you know how
(02:42):
Penn State was able to run the ball and then
get the ball down the field. There's no doubt that
Aller's the starting quarterback. There's no doubt that his arm
is superior. It's an NFL type of arm. But there's
certain skills that Bo brings to the table that they
did a great job of accentuating because they decided, hey,
look we are not one size fit you know fits
all here we go. You know this is what BO does,
(03:04):
We'll do what BO does.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Best Steve Jones played by play Voice, Penn State and
Nitney Lions joining us on the Legacy Retirement Group dot
com phone line.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
So you mentioned Drew Aller is Ohio tough.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
He is from a Dinah and you've got Will Howard
He's from Westchester, PA and went to a Downingtown West
High School. So you got a kind of an interesting
storyline there. I know, Will Howard says he was felt
a little disrespected because he was not recruited very heavily
by Penn State. I don't know if Drew Allen was
recruited by Ohio State at all or not. But you've
got these guys from competing states going at it. It's
(03:35):
gonna be kind of a fun thing to watch.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Yeah, it is interesting to watch. And Will obviously he's
had a terrific career everything he did out of Kansas
State and getting them to the Big Twelve championship. But
now at Ohio State and with those three terrific receivers,
he's so accurately runs so well, really impressive. So as
somebody who's not involved in the recruiting of players, Will
(03:57):
don't hold anything against me.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
No, you get points and fingers, but don't point them
at Steve Jones. So if you watched any of the
last couple of games from Ohio State, Steve, I know
you're you're kind of busy on Saturday, so I don't
know how much time you had to spend with us.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
But they've been struggling running the ball.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
They struggled against Nebraska last week, they struggled two weeks
prior in the second half, mainly against Oregon. Talk about
Penn State's front seven on the defensive side of the ball,
it's a pretty talented group.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
It is a talented group in that Ohio State offensive line,
of course has been banged up. You're talking about Drew
Aller being banged up, but Deni, Dennis Sutton, Abdul Carter
to outstanding defensive ends. You're going to see four of
the truly outstanding defensive ends in the country on the
same field on Saturday, Jtt, Sawyer, Carter. So, I mean
(04:48):
that's four guys that are just we're gonna be watching
on Sundays here down down the road. The defensive tackle play, Mike,
that's where Penn State's been better this year. Devon Thomas
and Zane Durant have had excellent years along with Kazai
Izard and now Alonso Ford. That's where Penn State's been
better this year. I expected Carter in Sutton to perform
(05:11):
really well this year, but it was the defensive tackle play,
which I think a couple of years ago some people
were questioning whether that was a weakness on the football teams.
Not anymore of those guys, especially Durant. Durant's had a
big ten conference level season to this point. The linebackers,
Kobe King. James doesn't usually recruit a quote middle linebacker.
(05:33):
He likes to recruit guys okay, they'll end up in
a middle linebacking stopped, but he likes versatility. But Kobe King,
he saw something in him where even as a guy
that is pegged as a middle linebacker, he really can
play now. And Tony Rojas is one of those excellent
two way linebackers that my broadcast partner Jack Ham talks
about all the time. The ability to play the pass,
(05:55):
the proper depth of a drop, and of course the
ability to attack to run, and that's where King's been
able to get better. He's also very good now against
the pass that you don't have to take him out
on passing downs anymore because of his experience and how
well he's played there. So the front seven for Penn
State's been really good to this point. It's created a
lot of happen Steve.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
Penn State fans a lot like Ohio State fans. Even
in a win, you know, they're kind of pulling their
hair out. I mean there were times. I mean the
Wisconsin game was not a cake walk. There were moments
where it's like, oh, you know, we're on the road.
You know, Camp Randall's a tough place to play. And
I'm reading some of the comments on social media from
Nidney Lions vans and they were you know, the sky
is falling in the world is and then you look
(06:36):
at it. It just replaced that with you know, a
Scarlett and Gray Buckeye fan who you know, in a
four point win in Nebraska, it's like, this guy is falling.
Everything is terrible, The wheels are falling off. What is
the what is the demeanor right now? I mean you're
number three in the country, Steve, what's the demeanor with
the Nidney Lion fan base.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
Well, let's see, the Ohio State of the last few
years has been a problem. So people. Of course here
you kind of get out of a hump in this game, like, okay,
just settle down, all right. And it's interesting you talk
about two schools that have had such great success over
the years. I mean they both had national championships, Big
(07:15):
ten championships and so forth. So along the way there's
an expectation where you don't just win. You got to
win by a billion today, and you know what, you
know what's really extremely difficult to do. Win Just win
is really hard. And I think there's fan bases sometimes
(07:37):
and it's a segment. You and I both know it's
a segment. It's not everybody. I mean, fans are awesome, incredible,
They're they're great. You know, I go to Ohio Stadium.
You know those people are great. Fans are going to
come here. The fans here are great. Okay, there's that
five percent group where therapy might be needed. But if
(08:00):
they're into it and I love it, okay. And the
fact that they're posting this stuff, you want to know
why they post it? Might they care?
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Yeah? It was there. They're a passionate group.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
I mean they Yeah, you'd rather have that high standard
set than have a low bar, absolutely, right, yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
I guess you know, and like you know, your show
for example. Okay, they're listening because they care, right, So
I do appreciate that. Now, it doesn't mean all the
comments are saying, but they care.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
It's a noon kickoff on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
A lot of folks here were very relieved at that
Steve because, you know, a night game at Beaver Stadium.
I don't know if it's a white out situation, but
even when the lights are on in this night and
everyone's had all day to fire up, it's a.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
It's a tough place to it's a tough place to
play anytime of day.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
But your thoughts on a noon kick on Saturday versus
a night.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
Kick, well, I don't know the reaction that you get
in Columbus, but I can tell you here the fans
here don't like noon kickoff. Yeah right, I mean I
mean all the time, because you've got to get it
and it takes a long time to get into the
parking lote. Okay, now you gotta get into the stadium.
That that's always been an issue here in terms of
(09:09):
just the pure time of the kickoff. People will be
there and they'll be loud, and they'll be into it.
How the white out it's a weak because they didn't
want to do a white out game for for Ohio
State at noon because they knew the gate. Everybody knew
the game was gonna be it, so they didn't want
to do it then. But it's a thing called the
helmet stripe that might as well be a white out game.
(09:31):
There's like thirty yards in the middle of it's blue
and everything else is white in the stadium. Okay, so
it actually does look kind of cool. But yeah, it's uh,
like I said, I don't know how the people there
feel about it, but there's always like this mini revolt
going on here when it be a Fox noon kickoff game.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
Great, you gotta get up at eight o'clock and start tailgating.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
Oh, I know, it's this terrible it's first world problem.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
Weather in State College Saturday, it looks pretty perfect sun
and cloud's fifty five degrees. If you could just do
something about the travel from Columbus to State College.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
You just can't get there from here.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
Steve, Well, Okay, then the Oha State people out of
state home dogs
