Speaker 1 (00:00):
At about seven forty in the morning.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
Let's go over to to our line, the Legacy Retirement
Group dot Com phone line and check in with one
of the co owners of Lyn's Fruit Farm.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
It's Noah Lynz. Noah, good morning, how are you friend.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
I'm good good, Thanks for having me.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Thanks for jumping on with us.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
I know you're probably pretty busy and we appreciate you
spending some time with us.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
A lot to cover. I want to just start at
the beginning.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Noah, we were talking about you guys back around Labor
Day weekend.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Something I never even occurred.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
It never even occurred to me, Noah, for someone to
go out to your farm and actually steal apples. What's
the story surrounding this? Back now, looking at about a
month ago, what happened?

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Well, so, our orchard is large enough that we feel
like it's the most convenient thing for.

Speaker 4 (00:49):
Our customers to be able to actually drive into the orchard.
And you know, it works out really well that along
with that, there's a few people that come out with
the idea today stuff stuff apples into, you know, all
of the nooks and crannies in my vehicle and maybe
they won't notice on my way out and uh so

(01:10):
it really became a big story this year. But the
fact is, this is something we've been dealing with since
the eighties. You know, we typically run into this happening,
you know, several several times throughout the year. Uh and
so we just kind of decided, hey, let's let's kind
of bring it to the attention of our customers in

(01:30):
the community this year, just so I say, hey, this
is the reason you know, for some you know, we
open people's trunks at our checkout and that's the reason
for it. Not because we don't trust our customers, right,
you know, we uh, you know, we just got to
take a quick look at everybody's car because you get
those few people that come through with bad attentions unfortunately.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yeah, it's it's sad that you actually have to do that.
And I know you guys don't want to do that,
but this is your livelihood, this is this is your business.
You're providing a great product and a fun opportunity for
families to come out, and you know, people come out.
And so it's interesting to hear that this has been
going on for a while that and you would imagine
anytime that you're offering this this service and people, as

(02:12):
you said, they drive their cars out and they look
around and they don't see anybody. They just jam apples
into the spare tire compartment or whatever there it is
they're doing.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
So what was this a.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Higher level that we experienced this year versus, as you said,
going back to the eighties to make you go, okay,
enough's enough.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (02:30):
Yeah, So we had one instant this year that this
particular person was hiding about four hundred dollars worth of apples,
you know, and it was just in a you know,
every spot that you could possibly, every every panel that
you could lift, compartment you could open, just stuffed full.
And so it really it stood out to us and

(02:52):
we thought, yeah, let's let's try to let's let's put
this out there just to let people know, Hey, this does.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
Happen and uh, unbelievable.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
So we keep an eye out for it, and you know,
we have a lot of fantastic customers. We put out
the word to them as well, Hey, if you see something,
you know, let us know, and you know, if that
helps us keep this experience fun for you.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
For sure, for sure.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
So what do you think people were doing with four
hundred dollars worth of stolen apples that wasn't for personal consumption,
was it?

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Were they trying to resell them at some point?

Speaker 4 (03:25):
You know, we don't know for sure, but that is
you know what we assume that they are using either
reselling or you know, using it in products that they're
they're selling. You know, we're not one hundred percent sure,
but that's that's our assumption.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Yeah, speaking with Noah Lynn from Lin's Fruit Farms, and
this has now spread over to pumpkin patches too. We
talked about that a couple of days ago, people going
in stealing thousands of dollars worth of pumpkins. And I
would assume the same situation you have these You've got
acres and acres and acres of these pumpkin patches or
in your case, apple orchards, and you're able to drive

(03:59):
your car out there and it's one supervisor. Are you
put more staff out now in the in the orchards
themselves to kind of keep an eye on things.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
Yeah, that's correct.

Speaker 4 (04:10):
We've always had staff out in the orchard on our
you pick days and customers are actually picking. But like
I said, it's a fairly large farm. We have over
one hundred acres of apples on our farm where the
you pick operations happen, and so it's hard to cover everything, sure,
but yeah, we keep staff out in the orchard to

(04:30):
try to help, you know, help our customers find the
right places to pick, and also kind of just keep
an eye on everybody, make sure everything's going the way
it's supposed to.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Right, And it's okay if I'm out there and I'm
picking apples with my family and I got a couple
of bags full, I can pick an apple off a
tree and take a bite right that, You're not going
to come after me for that. In fact, do you
encourage people to take an apple and eat it while
they're picking?

Speaker 3 (04:54):
Oh? Absolutely, yeah.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
We grow over thirty different varieties of apples, most of
them you've probably never heard of and.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
Certainly never seen the grocery store.

Speaker 4 (05:03):
So we encourage you, Yeah, take a bite, try it,
make sure you like it.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
I bet you.

Speaker 4 (05:07):
Will, but yeah, yeah, try it. Make sure you like
it before you pick a bagfull. Because a lot of
these apples are unique, some of them even unique specifically
to us.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
Really, so let's let's talk about let's talk about that.
I'm interested in that work. I think we're kind of
coming towards the end of apple season. I know we
had I've got about a dozen. I think they're autumn crisp,
I'm not sure on my counter.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
And they're so good.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Noah, It's like I'm having literally a couple of apples
a day.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
So what varieties are out there right now?

Speaker 2 (05:42):
If you're going to come out to Lise Fruit Farm
this weekend, it should be a great weekend for it.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
What are people going to see? What are they going
to pick?

Speaker 4 (05:48):
So this week and we're going to be picking sun
crisp and Crimson crisp. Crimson crisp is a really pretty
dark red apple that tastes great also looks beautiful on
the table. And then sun Crisp is one of our
most popular apples, and it's one that you're not going
to find very many other places. It's a yellow apple

(06:11):
that's got really nice tart kick to it. It's credible
for making apple sauce and cider and pies.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
How long will you go into October for apple picking?

Speaker 2 (06:21):
I know you'll do pumpkins and some other things too,
but how long how long do people.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
Have left really picking apples until the last weekend of October,
the last couple weekends in October, and pumpkins as well.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Okay, so are you doing pumpkins now?

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Yes?

Speaker 4 (06:36):
Yeah, we started pumpkin picking last weekend and that'll continue
throughout October.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
And you've not experienced any issues with the pumpkin patch
and people doing things they shouldn't be out there, have you?

Speaker 3 (06:46):
No, not as much.

Speaker 4 (06:47):
It's a lot harder to hide a pumpkin apple.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
That's the quote of the day from Noah Lynn Lends
Fruit Farm. And of course, yet the market, which I love.
My wife will go there and load up on stuff
that you don't normally see it that you're running the
mill grocery store, which is fantastic, and you have a
lot of other things happening.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
Is the corn Maze open yet?

Speaker 3 (07:09):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (07:10):
Yep, the corn Maze is open every weekend again the
last weekend of October, and yeah, corn Maze. We did
wagon rides. One really fun thing we have is our
apple cannons. So we've got these air powered cannons you
can shoot apples that. We've got all kinds of things
set up on the range, cars and.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
Bells, and that's cool.

Speaker 3 (07:34):
It's a literal blast.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
I bet that sounds like a lot of fun. And
we like to go out too.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
We'll do apple picking early in the year, and then
we like to come back and go and pick popcorn too.
People don't necessarily know about this where you can go
in and go through some of the cornfields and get
some of those old ears that have you know, sort
of not gotten picked for anything else, and you can
make some really really delicious popcorn.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
Right.

Speaker 4 (07:56):
Yeah, that's right. That's fairly new for us. It's a
it's a crop that's late in the year, but yeah,
you can come out and pick your own popcorn. Let
it hang in the house and d you know, finished
drying out, and then you yeah, I get to make
some of that, you know popcorn like in the old
days over the stove, you know, with popcorn that you picked.
It's it's really kind of a fun thing to do,

(08:19):
especially to show your kids, you know, hey, here's how
this works.

Speaker 1 (08:22):
Yeah, yeah, it's yeah.

Speaker 4 (08:24):
That's been really popular. We really have enjoyed being able
to offer that.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
Is that just a regular Is that a special variety
of corn or is that a it's just a regular
run in the mill ear of corn.

Speaker 4 (08:34):
No, it's it's a specific variety work well for the for
the popping yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
Great, great stuff. No, well, I'm sorry you guys are
having to deal with all of this. You know, hopefully
it's under control now. We encourage people to go out
to Lin's Fruit Farm and actually pay for their apples.
So we appreciate your time and and have a good weekend.
And if you need anything else, don't hesitate to give
us a call. Would love to have you on again.

Speaker 4 (08:55):
Hey, well, i'd just like to say real quick, you know,
ninety nine point nine percent of customers are incredible and
we couldn't do what we do without the incredible support
of this Central High community. So thank you to all
of our amazing customers apps.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
And did I read a while ago that you actually
had customers coming in and paying more for their apples
to help offset any kind of losses you had from
the thieves.

Speaker 4 (09:18):
Oh, we've had people offered, but no, we're doing just fine.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
You know, we do not need that. We appreciate all
the incredible support

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
