Speaker 1 (00:00):
So it began just after sun up this morning Betpage
Black in Long Island, New York, the site of the
forty fifth Ryder Cup, which is.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Going on right now.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
There are still three matches that are on the course.
They had a morning session this morning, the foursomes as
they call it, the alternate shot, and currently the four
ball or best ball is.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Going on now.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
And man, I'm telling you this is I gotta be honest,
a little bit disappointing as somebody who's rooting for USA USA,
and so I was, you know, earlier in the week
kind of talking to you, Chuck about, you know, the
format and the way that it works in all of this.
But I think now that you've watched some of this
(00:49):
this afternoon as we have it on here in the studio,
you kind of figure out this is clearly a different format.
It's not your standard golf tournament, if you will, And
so USA versus.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Europe and for a trick or treat you're gonna be
Keegan Bradley, Is that right? No, Okay, just check it.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
He is mister golf, Ray Hustick, who's joining us now,
and mister golf, here we go again.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Welcome to the show. Again, how you been.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
Brother, I've been great. Thank you. It's another exciting week
of golf, maybe the most exciting week of golf every
two years, where the Euros and the Usas get together
and battle it out in kind of an unusual format
that is pressure packed from the very first shot on
the very first hole and speak play.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
And speaking of that, the very first shot on the
very first hole hit by one Bryce and d Chambeau
who hit it to what twenty yards roughly something in
front of the in front of the green, maybe fifteen
yards somewhere around there, and they ended up with a birdie.
They took the one up lead out of the first
hole and then proceeded to get smoked. Look, I'm laughing
(01:59):
halfway to from crying. I'm gonna say it. What is
it about? And I was even saying this to Chuck earlier.
And maybe you have a thought on this. I'm sure
you probably do. But you go back to like a
Tiger Woods, who clearly was number one in the world
and who never really I don't think did as well.
I don't have his record in front of me, but
you thought somebody with his type of skill anything golf related,
(02:24):
he's just off and running, and you know, I'm not
sure if it's the people that play with him were
trying to you know, they were nervous, or they were
trying to play up to his level, or you would
think at this level they don't try that kind of stuff.
They know their own game, They play within themselves. And
then we see what Scotty Scheffler is doing today. It
is it's not very good what we're seeing.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
And I thought to myself, maybe you just don't.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
Include the world number one moving forward in any of
the writer comes. I don't know how to remedy this.
It's the weirdest thing. This guy, this mister automatic. Lately,
Scotty Scheffler doesn't look like the guy we've watched, you know,
just dominate every time, it seems as he steps on
the golf course.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
Well, let's look at a couple things. One, there's sixteen
points available Friday and Saturday, the first two days, and
that's out of the twenty eight total points. And you're
playing with a partner, which these guys never do. They
play their own game, and they're playing in half of
those matches. They're only playing half the shots because it's
alternate shot. So It's not the same at all as
(03:27):
a seventy two hole stroke play where Thursday you're just
going around and kind of feeling out the golf course
and you make a double big deal. You can pick
it up later. Maybe you shoot seventy two and your
five shots back after the first round, No big deal.
You got three more days to make it up. And
that's what Scheffler does. Scheffler is he allows the guys
to come back to him, and you know, he's just
steady going down, doesn't make mistakes on the weekend like
(03:48):
a lot of guys do. He knows his game match
play for eighteen holes, you have a couple bad holes,
and it's hard to come back. And it's something that
we see, as you mentioned, Tiger had a terrible wreck.
I mean he lost almost twice as many matches as
he won in Ryder Cup, and Michelson the same way
he was. You know, he was a guy that was
horrible in in Ryder Cup. Play because you're playing with
(04:12):
a partner and because you're playing match play, it's a
whole it's again, it's a whole different ballgame. And the
mindset from this, you know, we we changed the rules
back in the seventies to go from Great Britain and
Ireland to at Europe, and then we added captain's picks
when all the European players started playing the PGA Tour
full time, we added captain's picks so the European team
could be competitive and it has worked. I mean, these
(04:32):
have been really competitive. The last five Ryder Cups have
been won by the home team. So it just keeps
going back and forth. They went, we went, it, they went,
and they're not even close. I mean, it's so it's
really interesting how match play is so different from a
traditional seventy to two old stroke play event.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
Yeah, as you've been watching and following this all day,
who's jumping out at you as somebody who seems, you know,
rock solid for me, I'll just tell you, you know
I I And right now McElroy and Shane Lowry are
tied and they are Yeah, it looks like they're tee
and off on fifteen, so they're tied right now. This
(05:09):
is still up in the air. He was dominant with
Tommy Fleetwood earlier and it just seems like the usual
cast of characters who are dominating, and it's it seems
like it's all euros. They if you'll remember from this
morning Terrell Hatton, I mean some of the lies that
he and John Rahm were getting. The one particularly against
(05:31):
like a fallen branch. Their ball came to rest against it.
He hits it on the green like to a makeable
putt distance, and the ball is up against an actual
branch laying on the ground. And then the hole before that,
if you'll remember, it was like buried in I don't know,
the wispy yeah, oh my gosh. And he gets a
(05:53):
club on that and ends up not only getting a
club on it. Rom I believe was the one who
hit that shot. It ended up like with makeuple distance.
And I'm just going, are you kidding me? How are
they pulling this stuff? It's like superhuman stuff? And on
because I saw that buried in the fescue and I go, okay,
now we can hopefully get a little momentum, and then
they do something like that. I'm like, what is wrong
(06:14):
with these guys? They It's just like they won't go down.
It's crazy.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
Yeah, And I you know, being a homer that I am,
I'm like, they just get lucky all the time. But
of course they're great players. They take nothing away. I
will tell you that the you know, the guy you
asked about, solid Patrick Cantley ended up winning. Him and
Xander won this morning. They were the only point for
the Americans. The Euros won three matches and Patrick and
(06:40):
Xander got won in the anchor match in the afternoon.
Sam Burns and Patrick Cantley have taken Rory and Shane
as you said, fifteen and we're all tired. They just birdied.
The Americans just birdied the last two holes, so they
got some momentum going. Excuse me, they birdied twelve thirteen,
Part fourteen. But they've got the momentum on the American side,
and if that anchor match, if they could take down Rory,
(07:00):
that would be enormous going into tomorrow because it's all
about Rory, and it's about Rory guaranteeing from two years
ago when the Europeans stomped the Americans in Rome, we're
gonna win an away match at Best Page. I can't wait.
I mean, that's two years ago and here we are.
It's now in the middle of it. If they can
knock Rory off in the anchor match, regardless of what
(07:21):
happens in these other two matches right now, the Euros
are winning four to two and the the Americans have again.
That fourth match is tied, but the Europeans are leading
in the other match that's out on the golf course
since Ben Griffin and Bryson Deshamba are down to Fleetwood
and Justin Rose. So if they could beat Rory, regardless
(07:44):
of whether they're it's you know, it's a five two
or five three at the end of the day, or
excuse me, five three or four, excuse me whatever you'd
get me forget the match. I can't do math live.
But the idea is to beat Rory in this anchor
match and that would be big for a momentum going
into tomorrow. But tomorrow we we got to go play
alternate shot again in the morning. What do you do
with the pairings? Do you at least got it out?
(08:06):
Do you sit to him and put some of these
guys who have played better in the afternoon, Cameron Young
and Justin Thomas six and five winners. That's just a
dominant performance again, Ludwig Oberg and Rasmus hoyguards. So you know,
I think Captain and his vice captains have to sit
tonight and say listen, let's mix it up a little bit.
(08:27):
So maybe we need to get out of our game
plan if we're down two or three points going into
tomorrow and redo these pairings going into alternate shot, because
clearly we did not play well at all in that
format this morning.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
You know, justin Thomas this morning too, I was so irritated.
I was very frustrated watching him just I mean, he looked,
I'm gonna say it, he looked pathetic versus what he
was trying to overcome. Let's put it that way. Don't
get me wrong. I mean, clearly he still smokes everybody
(08:59):
who picks up a golf club, they'll get me wrong.
But in that situation, he just looked like he was crumbling.
And I don't know if it was the Bryson thing
or I'm trying to figure out what you know that guy,
because in the afternoon, clearly he comes out he's scorched
earth Man's they went they went crazy.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
Clearly.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
I think Kegan's going to keep captain. Captain Bradley's going
to keep them. I would imagine, probably keep them together
for the next four ball that'll happen tomorrow. I can't
imagine you split them up. I mean they had a
great success.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
You know, agreed in four ball for sure, but in
alternate shot there's no momentum. You only hit every other
shot and it's hard to really get into a rhythm
of things. I mean, the the Europeans were, what's seven
under for eighteen holes in that match this morning. Yeah,
you don't do that even you know, in bestball, let
alone in alternate shots. So they just played out of
their minds. The Europeans did take nothing away. They played
(09:54):
great golf and we didn't. And it is hard when
you're down in alternate shot to make up ground. Now
when you're in four ball, it's easier to get down
a couple and come back because you got two guys
and if they're both hitting it on the green, you
got a couple shots at birdie on every hole. It
makes it more possible. The odds are a little bit
better to try to make, you know, come back. But
if you hit one bad shot when you're only playing
(10:17):
one ball between the two of you, a lot of
times you're out of the hole, and it's it's really
tough to make up ground. But it's gonna be fun
to see. I just hope we're close going into Sunday singles.
I'd love to see those last three or four matches
on Sunday mean something. We've had the last five, as
I said, the home team has won and the closest
the away team has been has been five points. It's
(10:39):
not even been close. Wouldn't it be great to see
the last match or two coming down to stretch Sunday afternoon,
to have those actually mean something in terms of the outcome.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
Yeah, that it absolutely would.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
I'm looking at did you you like look at me
like you were, guys.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
And listening with a little fulfillment in my soul now
because when Ray began there, you know, one of the
things he mentioned was that what you and I were
talking about in the first hour. I think one of
the reasons the Europeans are I'm gonna say dominant, they
look dominant right now is because of the socialism mindset.
They are used to being communal, whereas the American golfers
are ready to go out west, young man. They are
(11:19):
independent by nature, and I don't think they do as
well when they have to rely on other people for
their success.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
I don't know, do you agree with that, because clearly,
you know and on the tour, you know, on the
European tour, they play golf the same way we do,
which is it is a single person sport. And yeah,
there are these kinds of formats where there are groups
of them, where you have teams if you will, live
of course, is a whole separate thing. They have the
(11:46):
team thing going on constantly, kind of almost as like
a side thing that happens to their normal playing singles,
if you will. But I don't know what you where
do you come down on that, mister Golf like what
he was just saying.
Speaker 4 (12:00):
I think it's a great point. Here's the thing. All
these guys are US Tour players. Let's make no mistake.
Every single guy playing to the Ryder Cup is a
US Tour guy. They all play here full time. Maybe
they live here, they went to college here, but when
they were kids, when you grow up playing golf, when
you play golf in Europe, you mostly play match play.
They still play a lot of alternate shot over there.
(12:21):
We never play that here. You don't go to your
club on Saturday and play alternate shot with your buddy.
That's what they play in Scotland. That's how they play golf.
They don't play a lot of stroke play as much
as they play match play. So these guys when they
were growing up and playing in high school and even
before that, they played alternate shot, they played match play,
they played with a partner. They're used to that. Now
(12:42):
we don't do that here. We only do it when
we play the President's Cup and the Ryder Cup. The
Europeans are better at it, and they have generally been
better until we get to singles. The Americans typically are
better in singles because maybe we go back then to
the comment about being communal and being individual. In the
individual match play on Sunday, we typically are a little
(13:06):
bit better than they are when it's just head to head,
you and me against each other versus you and me
and a partner on the other a partner team on
the other side. So I think there's something to that,
But there's also a little bit of just how they
grew up playing golf that I think makes a bit
of a difference. And let's face it, everybody wants to
beat the Americans. Everybody wants to take down the big, nasty,
(13:30):
ugly US of a right, So there is a little
bit of that in terms of the motivation whatever it is,
we got to figure it out, and we better get
it figured out here before we can't get stomped again
tomorrow and go into singles down by five or six points,
because that's just too much ground to pick up on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
Yeah, I agree with you. All right, we are, as
they say, unfortunately out of time. But he is mister
golf ray Hustik. And yeah, the forty fifth playing of
the Wryder Cup is promises looks like it's you know,
action packed, and it looks like it's gonna probably come
down to the wire. And like you said, I hope
that singles on Sunday you get to the final few
(14:10):
matches and they're actually going to be for something other
than bragging rights by that point, hopefully it's not over,
but of course we'll be watching and rooting on USA.
But mister dolphray Hustake, thank you so much for jumping
on today.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
I appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (14:24):
Thanks guys, it was great fun. Look forward to chatting
the USA.
Speaker 1 (14:29):
Yes, thanks all right, perfect, thank you? All right, Trafficking
