Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, here we go finally Friday.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
Yes, yes, yes, even though we're heading into you know,
the uh soggy weekend, at least it's going to.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Be warm, right.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
I mean it's way better than if it was like
sixty one or fifty eight in the rain, right, I mean, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
You gotta the glass is half full. Right. And then
by the way, as.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
We start next week, we're going to start climbing back
into the mid and upper eighties.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
And I like this.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Little blast of summer we've kind of basically had over
these last couple of days. I don't know where you're
at on that, but I love it. Bring it on,
let's go. I'm ready for a few months of this.
But that's part of the beauty also of living in
this area is because you don't have to deal with
it for you know, eight months.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Out of the year where you know.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
But I honestly I would be okay with that too
myself myself, but then again, I don't work outside.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
There is that which Marshall brought to my.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Attention when we were in this discussion not too long
like maybe I think it was yesterday or something like that, Hey,
I want to bring yeah, and he is the voice
of Disney's goofy Bill Farmer, joining us.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
Bill, Welcome again to the Mark Blazer Show.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
How you doing brother, Of course, I'm doing great. Actually,
I'm doing wonderful. I'm down here at the Animate Columbus
Comic con through the weekend and meeting all the fans
and the people around here, getting autographs and just having
a wonderful time.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
This is at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Correct, that's
where you're at. Okay, Yeah, So take me through what
that's like, because you know, Chuck and I, Chuck's on
the air with me. Chuck and I were having this
conversation earlier, and he was even saying, he goes, uh,
you know, I wonder if Bill is one of those
guys where people come up and they do their own
you know, garshk you know, or whatever, and you're.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
Like, do you give a time?

Speaker 2 (01:47):
So are you getting to the point because he even
kind of said, I bet you that's got to get
old him, and I said, look, I'm gonna tell you
this just based on our short you know, we we
spoke for a little bit a few weeks ago when
you were on with Mark. Who will get to that
Abbas List and all of that a documentary. We'll get
to that in a little bit. But I said, man,
based on that and based on what Mark has told me,

(02:08):
and obviously he's known you for a while. Now, I'm
gonna say, no, you do not. That never gets old
to you.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
I would imagine.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
No. I love Goofy. It was my favorite character growing up.
I've now been done at thirty eight years, which might
be a record in Hollywood for an uninterrupted character like that.
And so no, as long as they still hire me
and I get paid, I don't care how many people
to Goofy.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
You are Saint William.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
Yeah, that's what I And that's Chuck.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
That's the guy I was just talking about Bill that
you know, was even kind of saying that, and I go,
you know, I don't think so. I don't think that
he would ever get tired of that. And you probably
I'm gonna guess people come up to you and that's
probably one of the things that're like, hey, tell me
what you think my impersonation? You know, they do they
do that and go, hey give me a grade, or
they probably do all that stuff.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
I'm guessing.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
Yeah, they some are very shy but a lot of
people say, hey, what do you think? You know? I
think the weirdest thing I've ever heard from a fan
was a long time yeah yeah, several years ago he
came up and he says, well, I've been really working
on my goofy voice, so I can do it when
you die. And that was kind of an unusual comment.
And I said, you know, when I die, get in line, Yeah,

(03:23):
it'll be open. I won't care.

Speaker 4 (03:26):
You're laughing about that, But do you realize the first
ten years of my broadcasting career, that's exactly what I did.
I listened to guys who did all the commercial work.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Yeah, and like Bill.

Speaker 4 (03:36):
Hamilton, I remember Nationwise Auto Parts.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Yeah, he guess don't we all?

Speaker 3 (03:41):
We all impersonate?

Speaker 4 (03:43):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (03:43):
I did do man. Yeah. Isn't that the sincerest form
of flattery? Though? They say?

Speaker 3 (03:48):
Right, that's what they say.

Speaker 4 (03:49):
Yeah, yeah, die or retire, I'm taking over.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
So what Yeah? So what kind of So you're there?
You're park there today and again tomorrow and then against Sunday.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Correct, that's right, go back to Los Angeles Sunday night.
But everyone's been great today. They've been coming around and
telling me how much you know a Goofy movie makes
made to them. You know, they change their life. They
couldn't talk to their dad, but they they could when
that movie came out. And this is its thirtieth anniversary.
So I'm just I'm just delighted that the movie has

(04:23):
gotten the audience it should have gotten back in ninety five,
and that people even still care after this many years.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
Yeah, this is cool.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
So when we're talking to Bill Farmer, the voice of
Disney's Goofy and Bill, so take me through. Of course,
you're in Abby's List, a documentary and which, by the way,
is now streaming on Amazon Prime and iTunes, Apple TV
and most digital platforms.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
Now Mark right, Mark Southerland. He is the guy.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
I've known Mark a couple of years now, but clearly
we go way back as far as broadcast goes, as
far as radio. Mark has had a lot of time
he spent here in the Columbus area.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
He's back in this area. And so take me through.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
First of all, when you guys met, because I'm guessing
it had to do when he was in Orlando or
when he worked for Radio Disney.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
Correct, Yes, that was way back in the I probably
I started in eighty seven. So maybe maybe around ninety
ninety three, ninety five something along in that line. When
we would go to Florida we do radio interviews, and
Mark and Zippy at the time was the duo that
he was in, became friends and as it turns out,

(05:30):
lifelong friends. And so when he and I did radio
show with him in Huntington Beach, California for a number
of years on a Friday night, and so I did that,
went down there every Friday night, we did three hours
on the air, got to know him so well. And
then later on when that came to an end, he
decided to take his dog on a like a bucket list,

(05:53):
like what would a dog want to do? Well, first
of all, maybe talking to one of the world's famous
dogs like Goofy and Fluda, or peeing on the largest
tree in the world in the Sequoia Forest, and things
that talks might like as a kind of a bucket
list to kind of give this dog a wonderful send off,
and it became an amazing film Abby's List, which I

(06:17):
got to say, Mark did something that I don't know
anyone else has ever done, taking their own kind of
an own his own movie. Basically put it together music, sound, everything,
and was able to sell it and get it in
AMC and actual theaters across the country, and as I

(06:37):
understand it, it had got a one hundred percent on
Rotten Apples, which I've never heard of before. I don't
know any movies that good. How can a person do that?
But Mark was able to, and I'm so honored to
be a part of it as a kind of a
little guest and an executive producer on the film as well.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
When he brought you in on it or said, Hey,
my thoughts are Bill this this were you like, yeah?

Speaker 1 (07:01):
I mean immediately was the vision there for you?

Speaker 4 (07:03):
Like?

Speaker 1 (07:04):
This makes so much sense? And then boom off you go.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
Well, I love dogs so much, animated or real. I
sold a series to Disney Plus called It's a Dog's
Life with Bill Farmer, which ran for three years. So
I just loved dog. So if he was going to
do this tribute to his dog and take his dog
on a trip, I know it was going to have
a lot of love, and it does, and it has

(07:28):
a lot of heart. You might shed a tear a
little bit here and there in the movie, but it's
such a good feeling, feel good kind of film. Yeah,
that I was behind him one hundred percent.

Speaker 4 (07:40):
I'm trying to remember the last feature film where a
dog was a dog as opposed to a you know,
personified like you know, if it's a twenty cheech Mara
is going to be a voice or whatever. But do
you remember Benji?

Speaker 3 (07:53):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (07:53):
Yes, I wasn't that a Disney production. If I'm not mistaken,
I think there were two or three Benji's and that
the dog was just not a dog. But people flocked
to the theaters to see that because they just loved people.

Speaker 3 (08:06):
You know, they're man's best friend. And yes, people love
dogs and stories about dogs and marks are passed all
expectations with me. You know, I know it was going
to be good. I didn't know he's going to be
able to get it in theaters, but he was. And
it's it's available out there, like you say on you know,

(08:28):
Amazon and all these platforms, and if you haven't seen it,
it's a good, feel good movie.

Speaker 1 (08:34):
It really is. It really is.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Bill Farmer, the voice of Disney's Goofi, is with us
who is in the film Abbey's list of documentary. He
is in town this week and you can meet him
animate Columbus presented by Galaxy Con at the Greatest Columbus
Convention Center. It's going on now through Sunday, and it's
on it's streaming on Amazon, Prime, iTunes, Apple TV, most
digital platforms.

Speaker 1 (08:54):
And Bill, You're right, the movie is. I remember when Mark.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
First contacted me about it, and we really didn't even
We had a mutual friend that they work together a
ways back, and I think, I'm not even I can't
even remember exactly how, but we ended up connected. And
then I was like, oh, wait a minute, I remember
Mark from you know, radio here in town and so on,
and I'd never met him. But then he comes in

(09:18):
and I started kind of experiencing what really is magic
with this film, and it is. It's so heartfelt, and
you're right, Bill, it is. It is really in parts
it will probably make you it's it's a little bit
of a tear jerker, depending on you know how much
your love is for dogs. I'm also one of those people, Bill,
I say, you know, dogs are better than people because

(09:41):
you always know where you stand, you.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
Know where they stand with him or whatever.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
But Abby's list is very special. You can feel it
come through as you watch it. But I really suggest
streaming it and it's very simple to to to to
absorb right now, and that's the best way to come
describe it.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
So yeah, it's good.

Speaker 3 (10:01):
Oh yeah, and we all need a feel good movie.
And I mean who doesn't love their pet dog? I mean,
you know, sometimes they poop on the carpet or do
something you don't like, but all in all, they're always
glad to see you when you come home. That's better
than the wife sometimes.

Speaker 2 (10:18):
Hey, take me back if we could, Bill, and back
to nineteen eighty seven when you landed this gig.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
I mean, what was it like for you going did.

Speaker 2 (10:27):
You from that time to fast forward now to this
weekend what you're doing this weekend when you're in town
and you're traveling all over your doe did you envision
it being what it is or did it surpass that?
Did it transcend that? Like, what were your thoughts from
then until now? Or has it exceeded all of that?

Speaker 3 (10:44):
Oh, it's totally exceeded. Because, as you know, voice actors
are independent contractors. Every job is a new contract. I
didn't know if i'd have a second one or a
third one, not a thirty fifth hundred one that I
have over thirty eight years, or the series work that
I've done, or especially like a Goofy movie. That's a

(11:06):
movie that didn't get the greatest reception when it came
out in ninety five. It was good, it wasn't great
because it wasn't a mainstream Disney release, so they didn't
publicize it that much. But over the years, well, this
last month in April, it became number one on Disney Plus.
In Rentols, a documentary called Not Just a goof on

(11:27):
the making of a Goofy movie was number two. An
extremely Goofy movie, which was a sequel to the first one,
was number eight. I mean, that doesn't happen. I mean,
the audience founded it, gave it. It's the love that
it should have gotten way back in ninety five. It
has totally exceeded my expectations, and I'm just totally pleased

(11:47):
and happy to meet people here at the comic cons
and they tell me the stories, like, you know, I
couldn't talk to my dad and then we watched a
Goofy movie and it became our thing and we were
I was able to understand my dad because Max could
understand Goofy. I mean, it's amazing the stories.

Speaker 4 (12:05):
I hear those statistics that you just rambled off there.
That kind of answers what I was wondering, and that
is with the younger kids, you know, the ten and
under kids. Because Goofy has not been prominent, Disney has
kind of changed directions at a lot of ways, and
I was wondering, are you talking to thirty five and
ups or are you talking to kids? But with those
kind of home streaming numbers, it sounds to me like

(12:27):
people are kind of taking their kids back to woh
are you?

Speaker 3 (12:29):
And that's nice and yeah, since it's the thirtieth anniversary,
I mean people all the time say, you know, oh,
when I was a kid and I saw a Goofy movie,
I'm sided with Goofy's son Max, And now I've got kids,
I understand what Goofy was talking about. So it's kind
of like a tickle of life kind of a thing.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
That's awesome. Bill Farmer, voice of Disney's Goofy. You can
meet him at Anime Columbus going on the Greater Columbus
Convention Center.

Speaker 1 (12:56):
How much longer are you? Are you there tonight? Still
for a few hours?

Speaker 3 (13:00):
Yeah, I'm here till about eight pm. It's going to
close down. But I'm here all day tomorrow and all
day Sunday till about I got to leave a little
early four o'clock to get to the airport because they're
sending me back to Los Angeles.

Speaker 1 (13:13):
Okay, very good.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
You can meet Bill this weekend, of course, see him
in Abby's List, a documentary, really really neat film that
is streaming right now Amazon Prime, iTunes, Apple TV and
most digital platforms. Bill, it's just such a pleasure. You
are a very positive energy in this universe right now.
I appreciate you calling in brother.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
Well, it's my honor to be on your show, and
thanks so much.

Speaker 1 (13:40):
Thanks, We appreciate you.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
And that's it's fun that that film there's a there's
a quick don't blink because but I'm actually in it,
like a little little quick because he shot some footage
here while he was on.

Speaker 1 (13:52):
The air with me.

Speaker 2 (13:53):
Oh Mark did, and Mark is is this?

Speaker 1 (13:57):
He's not the star, but Abby is this.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
But he's Abby's dad in it, and he was the
mind behind all of this. He's a very special guy
and it's a really really neat film. So if you
have Amazon Prime or iTunes or Apple TV, hunt it
down and watch it this weekend Abby's list of documentary
and like Bill was just saying, the voice of disney

(14:21):
Disney's Goofy, like he's just saying, in this world right now,
you need something like this, like some sort of a film,
and it's positive and it's really neat to watch him
take Abby around and she almost starts to reverse like
maybe the illness that she was having. It's like she
starts almost kind of going backwards, and you can see

(14:44):
it in the film. It's it's actually very very cool, man.
It's a it's a very neat, very neat thing. So
thanks again, Bill Farmer, voice of Disney's Goofy calling in
and you can see him in Abby's list of the
documentary
