Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah, we were just talking about your neighbor's tree covering
your lawn and leaves and what you're able to do
and the limbs hanging over your property line and all
of what.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
I think.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
The natural trajectory then is to talk to my buddy
Mike Sebert, who is Columbus Trees, the general manager.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
And hey, Mike, welcome to the Mark Blazer Show.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
How you been man, I've been good, sir. How about yourself?

Speaker 1 (00:22):
You know I'm doing really good. Can't complain And as
they say, if I do, most people don't listen.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
So I'm just gonna say, no one will care anywhere, right,
that is a fact.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Absolutely, So, yeah, you guys, and I've talked about you
over and over on the air too, as far as
you know Columbus Trees and I've got a couple of
beautiful trees in my yard. Last year you guys came
out and put those in and so on and and
people I do get people asking me that this time
of year, well you can't, You're not supposed to put

(00:55):
trees in this time of year, And I think, well,
I know the answer is, well they'd be wrong people
who think that or say that, But bring us up
to speed with regard to you certainly can plant trees
right now.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
Oh, Contraria monfraire, You absolutely can plant trees right now.
It's a great time to plant different different than grass.
I mean, you've heard for years, everybody's heard you. Oh
you want to recede your yard in the fall. The
reason you want to do that is because the grass
seed needs that constant moisture to germinate and take root. Now. Trees,

(01:29):
on the other hand, because they've already got a root structure,
you can plant them anytime of year. We'll be planting
until the ground freeze is so solid that we can't
get the augur in the ground anymore. And you know
we're about anytime in the next four weeks. Trees are
gonna go dormant. So you're not gonna put the tree
into shock by planting it. The roots are gonna go dormant.

(01:53):
They're they're getting ready for winter. Uh. Your ground temperatures,
contrary to what Marshall was just discussing with the air
tempsund ground temps are still warm, so that soil is
still warm. We dig the hole, get the tree in there.
It's nestled in nice and tidy for winter, and it's
a great time because you've got the fall rain, you've

(02:15):
got the cooler temperatures, and the tree will be starting
to feel at home. So when it warms up in
the spring, it's ready to push roots and start going.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Talking to the general manager of Columbus Trees, Mike Siebert
joining us now, Mike, I got a couple of the
ivory silk lilac, the Japanese ivory silk lilac. These things
are absolutely just amazing. They're doing fantastic. As a matter
of fact, Andrew, who's one of the owners, like hit

(02:44):
me up and said, hey, we'll come out and look
at the tree. And this is the beautiful part of
what Columbus Trees does. That you know, as far as
the follow up and so on, forget about the fact
that when they were put in, when they were installed
as I'm calling it, or planted if you will, it
was I mean the machinery, the stuff that you guys use,

(03:05):
I was in absolute awe. I was it was like
watching this whole process was fascinating to me, especially when
you're talking about the machine that they used to bring
you know, I guess it's the augur is that what
you're calling. So it has basically the tank treads, if

(03:27):
you will, for lack of a better comparison, and they
put down like plywood, and this thing's rotating around on
the plywood so they don't mess up your lawn.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
I was an absolute like I couldn't stop watching it.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
It was like one of those things that you see
maybe you're flipping through right, I don't know, and it's
an infomercial and they're doing something that you go that's
kind of interesting, and you just can't stop watching it.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
That's what happened with me.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
You guys were in and out of there so fast
for starters and then leaving the place looking like those
trees had been there for quite a while. And as
you know, big trees, tiny price for Columbus trees. I mean,
you guys bring the you know, somewhat mature trees. That's
that's kind of your niche here, if you will. But
but those things are fantastic. And he came out and
restaked to make sure they're growing nice and straight. And

(04:14):
I have had I've had so many different amazing compliments
on these, and my parents had one put in and
you guys have just done an amazing job and as
a and I also tell people to them, like make
the trip out to Sunbury and check out is it.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Blue Church Road experience?

Speaker 2 (04:31):
I think it's Blue Church Road like you guys are road.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
Yeah, we're north of thirty six off of Carter's Corner
by the Catholic Church. That's that's the before you get
if you come off with seventy one turn left of
the Catholic Church before you get to Tractor Supply. Were
about five minutes. It seems like it's going to be
a long drive, but it isn't. And it's a beautiful
experience to walk it.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
It really is.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
That's what I was saying, is like the actual property
where everything you guys have everything set up is incredible.
It's so beautiful out there and it's so tranquil as well.
And like I was saying, I'm having such a lot
of really good compliments and so on about the ivory
silk lilac, the Japanese ivory silk lilac.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
We appreciate it. And Andrew's older brother Nick, who started
the company. He actually started Fort Wayne Trees in Fort Wayne,
Indiana about fifteen years ago. Successful business model. We go
around the country. He finds growers that have massive caliper
which is your diameter size, massive massive caliper trees that

(05:33):
local nurseries and local landscapers just aren't going to mess with,
and we bring those in on truckloads. Indianapolis has been
opened now eight years. We're finishing up our second summer
here as the third location of the family business. But
when Nick started the company, it was two main goals.
One we're going to do something that no one else

(05:54):
does with the size of the mature trees that we
do amazing. And two we're going to set the bar
as far as the qual in the experience. We do
everything from selling it on the front end to having
our own people plant. We don't sub anything. We own
it from top to bottom. We're very very proud of
our crew. We can do the best job possible here

(06:14):
in the office and fall flat on our face if
the crew does a bad job. So we're very very
lucky to have the crews that we do, and I
think our Google reviews show it. The crews get more
reviews than the shopping experience out here as far as
the job well done. So ye, you're right, we want
it to look like we were never there other than
the fact there's a tree that looks like it's been

(06:34):
growing for fifteen years. Other than that, we don't want
to leave a mark.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
It's pretty incredible.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
Actually, Don Ross, who is Ross World Advisors, he actually
is joining us next hour. He sent me a text
because he's listening and he goes, hey, they came out
and Planet I was like, oh, yeah, that's right. You
guys did some stuff for Don Ross too.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
Yeah, we did some big, big maples in his front
yard and pretty good size magnolia in the backyard.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
So one other thing, I you know, I was looking
up myths about trees and planting and all this stuff.
And I was looking and by the way, we're talking
to Mike Siebert, Columbus Trees general manager, and so trees
need to be staked was one of.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
The things they talked about on here.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
They say, well, that's only partial truth to this myth,
and uh, tell me if you agree with this or not.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
Again, this was just a search on online.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
As it does, well, go ahead, go ahead, No, yeah,
it's I would say it is. It is a partial truth,
half truth. It's it's going to depend on how big
is the tree that we're putting in what's the prevailing
winds and and uh, is it in a protected area
kind of you know, the wind predominantly comes from one direction,
and that direction's in the front of the house, and

(07:47):
and we're putting the tree in the back of the house.
You know, there's a lot of factors involved. But the
short answer is no, it does not always need to
be staked. The long answer is, you know, what is
the canopy density. Are we talking about a very dense
leaf tree that there's going to be a huge wind
sail and it's going in an area that's wide open,

(08:11):
We're probably gonna want to stake that. You know. If
it's something that's a magnolia that's multi trunk and fairly
open leaf pattern, where it's got a lot of filtered
light and a lot of filtered wind that can pass
through it, that that's and it's going to be up
between the back of the garage and the and the
off front den window office window at the house, right,

(08:33):
that's that's probably not gonna need state. So yeah, it is.
It is a situation dependent.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
One of the things that I love too about the
website the prices.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
Are on there.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
They include the delivery, the installation, the mulch, one year
warranty with it, all of that. I'm if you're in
the market for a tree again, you have plenty of
time still again until the ground is completely frozen, and
you can go to Columbus Trees dot Com and and
see all of that. But I know me and you
guys listed on the maples and oaks and evergreens and

(09:04):
flowering and they've got it all as far like I said,
the pricing, everything is right there. It is complete and
there's no like hidden anything. That's one of the reasons
that I love working with you guys, Columbus Trees.

Speaker 3 (09:17):
I appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Yeah, yeah, for sure.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
Columbustrees dot Com, Big trees, tiny price for sure. And
Mike Siebert, Columbus Trees general manager, Mike, I appreciate you
jumping on with me today.

Speaker 3 (09:27):
Hey, absolutely, thanks for the phone call.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
We appreciate it absolutely. We'll talk to you later man,
all right, sure, take care
