Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hell is Real. How much do you know about and
if not very much, because I don't really know very
much and I'm not trying to put you on the spot, Chuck,
but it's Columbus Crew hell is Real, the Interstate Rivals
as they called. They met in the playoffs and the
last time was in twenty twenty three, and again I've
got this information right in front of me, and they

(00:22):
picked up a three to two road victory in overtime
to advance to the MLS Cup Final that year. And
so as far as the Hell is Real series, I am.
I'm always behind and rooting for any of our local
teams that are doing something that is pretty incredible, and
that is the Columbus Crew. And this series is interesting

(00:46):
to say the least.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
And I know nothing. I mean, that's you were asking
me what I the first time I heard years ago, Yo,
Columbus Crew invites you two hell is Real and I'm thinking, okay,
so the concession stands have only high dietary fiber items.
Why are we calling it hell is Real? I give
that and so that's that was, you know, I didn't
understand why they had that name. I'm thinking it's soccer

(01:09):
shouldn't it be fun? Oh that's what I was thinking.
Soccer is fun and then hell is real? Wow. But
my soccer knowledge is very, very limited. I love watching
my grandkids play. I can tell you.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
That you've seen the sign on seventy one.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Yes, hell is real?

Speaker 1 (01:25):
Okay, because I believe that's where and we'll find out
if maybe he may know this. But play by play
for the Columbus Crew, Chris dorn is joining us now. Chris,
welcome again to the Mark Blazer Show. How you been brother.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
Blazer and great, thanks Chuck Zach. Great to hear your
voices this afternoon, and thanks for having me. Thanks are great.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Yeah. So I don't know how much of what you
just heard Chuck and I saying talking about whatever, and
but you know Chuck was saying, you know, hell is real.
He was thinking and and and.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
The olayo ola.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
I mean that you hear that with the Ryder cup.
Now you hear you know Europe is everywhere, right, And
so I don't know that that's just specific to soccer
when people are doing that, But Chris just starting out,
is that a soccer wide thing or is that specific
teams that can only do that? That kind of chant.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
Oh the ola. Yeah, yeah, no, it's for everybody, okay, yeah,
And I think it's been incorporated into World Cup theme
songs in the past, so it's pretty common. The hell
is Real banner over this derby between Columbus and Cincinnati
is unique, and you did mention it. It's the billboard
on seventy one that says hell is Real in addition

(02:39):
to some other billboards, but the one that supporters groups
for both Cincinnati and Columbus latched onto back in two
thousand and seventeen eighteen, when we knew Cincinnati was going
to get an MLS team, was the hell is Real billboard,
and so that has become the moniker. And it was
a little it was it's a little slow. I have

(03:01):
to give the supporters for both clubs a lot of
credit here, because you know, you've got the hell word,
and you know, even in broadcasting for US thirty years ago,
you had to be careful using it. But the clubs
were a little slow to latch on, and so too
was the league. But then there was no denying that.
When these two teams started meeting in twenty nineteen, it

(03:24):
was kind of a kind of a twisted year in
twenty twenty because of the pandemic. But then after that
the battles and as in twenty twenty one, Lower dot
Com Field came online, Antiquell Stadium, Cincinnati's new home field,
came online. It just amped everything up from there. So
that's that's the beauty of that Hell Israel tagline for

(03:45):
the derby.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
And it's a real it's a real rivalry now too.
Clearly that's interstate rivalry that started with the Crew and
FC Cincinnati.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
Correct, Yeah, it is.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
I mean, you know, part of it is if you
go back, if you're a longtime Crew fan, then you
have to start with the story of how Cincinnati was
granted permission for an MLS franchise, and I don't remember
what year that was, but I think it was around
twenty sixteen, and in their transition from absolutely nothing to

(04:18):
let's become a professional soccer team, Cincinnati inserted themselves into
the USL, which is the league below Major League Soccer.
Well in the US Open Cup. Major League Soccer teams
play USL teams at times, and in fact, there was
a us Open Cup game where Columbus had to travel

(04:39):
to Cincinnati and play them. In this match, a match
that Cincinnati won, and they kind of hung their hats.
They were like, oh, just wait till we get to
Major League Soccer, because we're going to make a meal
out of Columbus. Well, Columbus is the first club in
Major League Soccer. We're thirty plus years old. Okay, we're

(05:00):
big guys, we're mature. We know how to handle the defeat,
we know how to handle draws. We also know how
to win. And so as soon as Cincinnati came on
board in to twenty nineteen, I mean I think that
there was a draw at historic Crew Stadium and then
a Crew win, which was down in Cincinnati at the
UC Football Field because there Steve Stadium hadn't come online

(05:25):
in twenty twenty because of the pandemic. The season was
canceled and then reorganized, and so we went to the
Bubble in Orlando. We played Cincinnati once down there in
that tournament, and then we came back and what the
league did is they rescheduled games so that geographically close
teams wouldn't have to travel so far and they'd end
up playing one another sometimes two or three times. That's

(05:46):
exactly what happened. We ended up playing Cincinnati four times.
In twenty twenty we beat them three times and we
tied them once. Now, it wasn't until twenty twenty three
that cincinnat finally got to a playoff game where we
were able to play against them. And that's what's happened
this year for the only second time in the short

(06:09):
history of Cincinnati and the long thirty year history of
the first club in Major League Soccer. We're going to
meet in a playoff game times two because it's the
best of three. So we'll play tonight in Cincinnati, but
we're going to come back and play at lower dot
Com Field next Sunday, and then a third game in
Cincinnati the following week if it's necessary.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Now, Chris, that's starting out in the league below the MLS.
Is that the differentiation between the teams that call themselves
football club versus soccer club or is it just a
matter of taste like the and what determines that.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
No, No, it has nothing to do with that. It
has nothing to do with you know, pronunciation or terms
or anything like that. They're all football clubs in Europe,
they're all soccer clubs here in America. It's the league,
it's the investment that's required to be a part of
the league. It sometimes becomes the quality of player that's

(07:00):
available to you in the market and what your owners
are willing to invest. So USL is just completely different
in the sense that it is the lower league and
in the structure that US Soccer has established, MLS is
number one, USL is number two, and then it goes
down from there. So we're at the top of the pyramid.
We're in the postseason. Every first round series between these

(07:22):
teams one in eight, two and seven, three and six,
four and five our best of three game series, and
we start our best of three game series tonight on
the road at Cincinnati. It's going to be a great environment.
The Cincinnati fans were kind of hemming and hawn about
having to play on Monday night at six fifty five.
Too bad, you know, we did it last year, and

(07:44):
so that's just the way it goes. The great thing
about it is that we get to see where we
are with this squad that we have that's playing better
than it has probably over the last two months. We
went down to Orlando, which is a tough place to play.
We tied one to one, came back, had decision Day
last week, which was the final regular season game played

(08:05):
three to one, celebrated Darlington Nagby's career as he's getting
ready to retire. But more than anything else, we were
able to get a lot of that game played the
way we wanted to play it, and I think Coach
Nanci and the rest of the guys in the locker room,
we're all very upbeat about it.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
Play by play announcer Chris dorn is joining us now
for the Columbus Crew, and we were just talking about
the last time they met in twenty twenty three. The
crew ended up winning that and do we have a
and forgive me for not knowing, Chris, but do we
have a lot of the same players? I mean, are
the thoughts of that meeting between you know, the winning

(08:42):
if you will the crew in that you know the
last time that they met, I mean, will they will
that fuel the confidence that the crew needs? I mean,
like I said, is a lot same personnel?

Speaker 3 (08:53):
Well, so a lot of questions here. Let me see
if I can break it down for you. Blazer. First
of all, no, that's okay, no problem. First of I
think it's fair to say that after we came back
from a two to oh deficit and beat them at
added time three to two, and twenty twenty three, they
came back and beat us the following May at lower
dot Comfield. That's when they couldn't forget what had happened

(09:13):
to them four months prior.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
Okatchach.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
So that's been sort of been put in the background
to your second question. Are there guys still around on
both teams? There are, but more so in favor of Columbus.
Columbus has got twelve guys on the roster now who
were on the game day twenty the night that we
played that game in early December of twenty twenty three,
there are only six guys that were on that roster

(09:37):
for Cincinnati who are on this roster now. Only three
of them started, and one of them will not be
available tonight because of injury. So if you're talking about
experience from twenty twenty three, not a lot of it.
And when the game comes down to it and you're
sitting on a two zero lead, you should be able
to finish it out at home. Well, a couple of

(09:59):
months ago, we went down to Cincinnati in the regular season,
spotted them two goals in the first six minutes, and
then we scored four of our own to leave Cincinnati
with a four to two win. So in both of
those situations, they couldn't secure a two goal lead. And
believe me, there have been times when it's been tough

(10:19):
for Columbus to secure a two goal leads. So I'm
not exactly pointing the finger, but you know, all they
have to do is look back at what happened in
July and they should get angry at themselves for blowing
that game. It might be need to go all the
way back to twenty twenty three.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
It might be in the water down there because it
seems like the Bengals are having that.

Speaker 3 (10:39):
That's what it sounded like in the last block. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
Sorry, Chuck is shaking his head. He's like, not funny.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
Those jokes aren't funny. They're never funny.

Speaker 1 (10:48):
Sorry.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
I'll tell you I think, and I'm a layman the
whole you know, football slash soccer thing. But I'll tell
you that this coach Nanzi. First of all, when they
announced he was going to be coach, I went, the
guy's name is Nancy, you know, I'm like, what is that?
Then I saw he was coming down from Montreal. I'm like, okay,
this ain't hockey, man. Why are we getting a guy
from Montreal? He is one of the reasons I actually

(11:11):
bother to pay attention to what's going on with the crew.

Speaker 3 (11:13):
Now.

Speaker 2 (11:13):
This guy just he just seems to have that winner mindset.
We're going to get this done, and I think it
show it. I mean more and more people are talking
about the team and watching what's going on.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
Yeah, Chuck, you're right. And he came down to twenty
twenty three. I met him the night of the announcement
that Tid mes Pichenko made that he had been acquired
as the new head coach, and when I had a
one on one with him, I told him, I said,
when you talk about soccer, it's like it's almost romantic,
because he has a way that he wants to see

(11:45):
the game be played, and they have only brought players
in who are capable of playing that way. So one
of the players we're going to see tonight is a
guy that Cincinnati bought for twelve million dollars. I have
never been able to confirm whether or not Columbus was
in the running for that player earlier this season. But
this player is a Brazilian magician. He's really very very

(12:09):
good Evander, and he's having an MVP season. He's the
kind of player that the coach Nanci would have to
hand select with the general manager easta tall to say,
all right, this is a guy who we think can
play in our system, but they are extremely particular. And
then beyond that, Coach Nazi is really really, i would

(12:30):
say patient when it comes to bringing players up to
speed within a training session, a week with the team,
two weeks with the team. You don't just step on
the field and go. One of the big mistakes that
coach Nanci has regretted this season is the fact that
we spend a lot of money on Daniel Gosdog as
a designated player, which is one of the highest paid

(12:51):
players on your roster, and we brought him in right
away and put him on a plane and took him
to a game and made him play because Coach Nancy
understood that Daniel had a lot a lot of talent
and could do a lot of great things for the team.
But he kind of forced the system on Daniel, who
could handle it, but probably didn't understand all the nuances
behind it until several weeks later when we were able

(13:12):
to see him perform at a much higher level. So,
you know, I think to your point about coach Nanci,
he has been terrific. He was last year's SIGGI Schmidt
Coach of the Year Award winner. He's going up against
the guy who beat him out for the Coach of
the Year in twenty twenty three tonight in Cincinnati, and

(13:33):
I think just in that game alone between the two coaches,
to see what unfolds on the field is going to
be really interesting.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
So I'm guessing there are no tickets left for tonight
or are there in Cincinnati?

Speaker 3 (13:47):
Are guessing there? I don't know. I actually don't know.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
You know what. As I was saying that, as it
was coming out of my mouth, Chris, I said to myself,
wait a minute, Like he's going to be like, well, yeah,
I'm a ticket broker too. By the way, let me
tell you what I got it. You know, you just
you think about what's going on here, and I would
be surprised. But I will say this. I saw you
with Cameron earlier today too, and the Columbus crew is

(14:14):
it's a watch party that's happening at lower dot Com
tonight as well for the game.

Speaker 3 (14:18):
Right exactly, one of the reasons why Chase Plaza is
the way it is with the big screen TV is
for nights exactly like this, because there's nothing better than
gathering in a community with other like minded people, other
Black and Gold soccer fans. The Crew shop is going
to be open, so if you need to get playoff
gear before the weekend, you can do that. There'll be

(14:41):
food and games, and they'll be prizes too, but most
of all, you'll be with other Crew fans watching on
the Gigiando screen there at Chase Plaza and enjoying the game.
So if you don't have a chance to get to
Cincinnati tonight or that's not in the plans, put the
kids in the car and do that. The only thing
the club's asking is that you log on to Columbus
Crew dot com and just let them know you're coming.

(15:02):
The tickets are free, it doesn't cost anything, but they
just want to have a head count before you get there.

Speaker 1 (15:07):
That's pretty cool. I mean, yeah, I saw in my
info in front of me say yeah, it is ticketed,
but the tickets are free. And then you've got to
do it online. Where do they go to to to
do that?

Speaker 3 (15:19):
Chris, Columbus Crew dot com Okay, the best way to
do it.

Speaker 1 (15:23):
Yeah, that's easy enough. Then all right again, I know
I've said it every time you've been on the air
with me, but I'm going to say it again. It's
pretty amazing listening to Chris do his play by play
considering he's the only guy in there, and think about
how they're they're what what go ahead.

Speaker 3 (15:42):
I was just gonna say, you're very kind, but I
do appreciate it, and I appreciate our family and stations,
being our anchor station. iHeartRadio. So that's terrific.

Speaker 1 (15:52):
Yeah, yeah, I mean when you think about there, there's
a lot of kind of idol if you will time
or not. You know, it's not we know that, a
lot of space to film. Yeah, and he and Chris
is incredible at it. I'm serious. I mean he is
so Again, like I said, I've I've said that over
and over each time you've been on, Chris, but it's

(16:14):
still to me pretty fascinating actually listening.

Speaker 3 (16:17):
Man. Yeah, thanks, thanks a lot, pleaser. I appreciate it.
I'm hard to get along with. It's best that I'm
alone anyway.

Speaker 2 (16:25):
I like him already.

Speaker 1 (16:26):
That is hilarious. So it's the first of three and
tonight in Cincinnati, the Hell Is Real series, The Columbus
Crew and FC Cincinnati and Chris Dorin, who is the
Columbus Crew play by play Chris, thank you so much
for jumping on with us. I know you got a
lot going and you're gonna get underway here. Are you
already down? Are you there or are you in Cincinnati already?

Speaker 3 (16:48):
Yeah? Just about I pulled over so I could make
the phone call.

Speaker 1 (16:52):
Oh okay, very good. Well, have a good call tonight
and I'm sure we'll be listening and so on. But
go crew, and and thank you very much for jumping
on with I appreciate you so much.

Speaker 3 (17:01):
Yeah, Blazer, Chuck, thanks so much. Have a great afternoon.

Speaker 1 (17:04):
Thanks man, you too, all right,
