Speaker 1 (00:00):
Royal Oaks is joining us now a legal analyst and
Nick Reiner under arrest for the murders of his parents.
So what can happen next in Royal Welcome to the show.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Well thanks. The next step is he has to get
cleared to come to court. That's why there's not going
to be hearing today. They have to determine that medically
from a metal and physical health standpoint, he's okay to
go from jail to the court, and that hasn't happened yet.
But when it happens, there is going to be an arraignment.
He of course will almost certainly simply plead not guilty.
(00:34):
There will be no discussion if possible metal health issues
or a possible insanity defense that if it happens, it
all will come later. The district attorney right now, you
can bet, is drafting a charging document based on the
evidence provided by the police, and then after the arraignement
a couple of weeks or later down the road, it
will be a preliminary hearing where a judge will decide
whether there's enough evidence to force Nick render to go
(00:55):
to trial.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
So how much of the details or the fact what's
surrounding this are you privy to royal because you know,
we're reading that they were at Conan O'Brien like a
party of his and there was a shouting match or
they were fighting as far as the parents and then
Nick as well. I don't know if you have you
(01:18):
heard that or can you corroborate that?
Speaker 2 (01:20):
Yeah? Absolutely, that has been reported in multiple spots, and
so that's what people are assuming is the case. And
of course that could be huge in terms of the
trial here because I mean, let's say it, if the
authorities at the DA apparently have very solid evidence that
Nick Reiner is the person who stabbed his parents to death,
(01:41):
then the issue almost certainly will quickly move to well,
what is or was his mental state? We know that
he was thirty two? Is thirty two? From fifty eight
to fifteen on, he's been in and out of have
there have been situations involving a drug problems, conflict with
the parents. So I mean a ConA and O'Brien holiday party,
(02:03):
it's probably festooned with a lot of big names, and
a lot of those people may have very pertinent information
about what their relationship was like that night right before
the murders between Nick and his parents, and thus if
there is any kind of suggestion that there was insanity
or a situation where through voluntary intoxication of drugs or alcohol,
(02:25):
he should not be held responsible for murder but instead
for manslaughter. His metal state could be just the very
centerpiece of any case.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Hey, Royle, I would assume you know, the people, the
financial stature of the writers. There were security cameras and
all that kind of stuff around, and a four million
dollar bond seems to me to be pretty much indicative
of what the prosecutors believe they've got as far as evidence.
Am I just am I misreading?
Speaker 1 (02:49):
He's no bond. He can't bond out right now.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
I thought they said four million dollars urged him up.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
But now now he can he cannot get out, all right,
I'm pretty sure.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Yeah, Yeah, I believe that's what I've seen, is that
there's no bond. Of course, things could change on that front,
but yeah, I think it's really a question of what
is in the DA's mind. We don't know yet because
they aren't talking. They are going to talk in about
fifty minutes from now. There's going to be a press
conference by LA's DA. Nathan Hockman. We may get a
good flavor of the allegations the facts that the DA
(03:22):
thinks that they have, but we won't get the full
picture until they prepare the writing. Of course, we'll be
filed in advance of the arraignment that's probably going to
happen in the next several days.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
That's a good point, Chuck, with regard to the type
of security that they have there. And I'm sure there's
all kinds of cameras I would imagine royal and again
this is us spitballing, speculating whatever, but there it's got
to be. It's probably slam dunk video. As sad as
this is going to be. I feel like there's probably
(03:53):
there's probably extensive video of the whole thing.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Yeah, yeah, there may well be. I mean, of course,
when you think about surveillance video, you think of it
in terms of outside a home or outside a building,
not inside, although some people certainly have, you know, ring
cameras or nanny cams or whatever. So it's probably a
long shot that the actual horrific crime was captured on video,
but a lot of surrounding areas. As you suggest, it
(04:18):
wouldn't be a surprise that a massive home like this
in Brenton, and brent would the Tony section of Los
Angeles would have some surveillance information that might be helpful
to who knows either side if the criminal case proceeds.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
I have to say I couldn't blame them. There's been
a history. It's been an up and down, but the
ups and downs have both been extreme with this young man,
and I would not blame them if they had cameras
all over the interior of that house just in anticipation
of perhaps having to prove something in court one day.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
Yeah, yeah, wouldn't be It would not be a surprise.
At this point, of course, we're really in the realm
of speculation in terms of, well, he probably did it,
and he probably did it because of metal issues. We
just don't know, but certainly that those are huge topics,
because again, if the defense could somehow prove that he
literally did not know right from wrong at the time
(05:09):
he committed the act, either because of insanity or because
of intoxication of something, you know, that's the centerpiece of
the defense, and that could result in a not guilty
by reason of insanity finding, or it could result in
manslaughter if it was voluntary and intoxication. It could just
be a few years in prison, as opposed to murder,
(05:30):
which could be twenty five years to life.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
Royal Oaks is joining us ABC News legal legal analyst
out of Los Angeles and Royal I was also seeing
or I read or heard that it was their daughter
who discovered them. Is that what you also heard? And
then on top of that, what led them to Nick
is the person of interest until obviously finally getting him
(05:55):
into custody. I'm just curious, and then the timeframe on
it as well, from the time that she found them
from when he was there, and do you have I mean,
I know we're getting to the facts and so on
in the case, but I'm interested to know if you
know any of that.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Yeah, what we do know that has been reported multiple
sources is that about three point fifteen PM in the
afternoon on Sunday, I believe the daughter went to the house,
she discovered the bodies. She called nine to one one.
It wasn't until about nine or nine thirty that evening
(06:30):
that the sun was apprehended in Los Angeles, but in
maybe twenty thirty minutes away, not in the section of
town where the parents live. So that's all we know
really in terms of the timeline and how things went down.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Yeah, very interesting. And did you say there's going to
be a presser of some sort again today? Is that
what you were saying?
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Royal? Exactly exactly forty five minutes from now, LA's District
Attorney Nathan Hockman will hold a press conference. And we
don't know how upfront he's going to be in terms
of revealing everything they know, but obviously he feels it's
important to let the public know the status of the
investigation and the possible criminal charges against Nick Reiner.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Royal Oaks. ABC News legal analyst out of Los Angeles
on Rob and Michelle Reiner's murder, the very latest on this, Royal,
thank you very much for giving us all this information.
Good stuff.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
Thank you you bet. Thanks, all right, we'll see you
