Speaker 1 (00:00):
Senate Bill one fifty eight, and under this, Jane Timkin
is the one sponsoring this and school districts she's talking about.
School districts would have to prohibit cell phone use by
students during school hours starting September first. The explosion of
social media means scenes are hit with an average of

(00:20):
eleven notifications an hour, which is interesting. I'm like, eleven
notifications an hour, that adds up to about one hundred
and ninety two during their awake time. It means they're distracted,
they're addicted. They're constantly wondering what what am I missing?
And what notification did I miss? And that's going to
those thoughts I feel like are going to happen whether

(00:43):
they have their phone at school or not, as far
as what am I missing? You know, maybe I'm daydreaming
about that or whatever, And then she goes on to
talk about it's not good for a conducive learning environment.
It also has damaging social effects. Okay, as far as
social effects and all that, no one's asking you to
help us raise our kids. Once again, this is I

(01:05):
feel like we're government steps in it. It's like, listen,
I don't need your help raising my kids. It's it's
it's not uh, it's damaging social effect. Let me figure
all that out.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
As far as at school. The first sentence out of
your mouth as you began to uh, to present this,
I'm okay with I like Jane Timpkin, by the way.
She and I have had wonderful discussions in the past.
I like her a lot. But what you said in
the first sentence there and what is being presented now

(01:37):
are two different things. Use of those cell phones in
the school as presented at the beginning of this and
banning of cell phones in school are two different things.
You want to say that, Ohio policy is now that
those phones cannot come out at all. Okay, I kind
of think they should be able to come out at

(01:58):
lunch or recess or whatever. But if you want them
fine during school hours, they must be turned off. I'm
good with that. But to say they can't be present,
I think is a fool's errand. And the world the
world says two nuts. Now, We're not just talking about,
you know, violence in the school or a shooter. We're
talking about perverb teachers doing things. We're talking about crazy principles,

(02:20):
which I'll talk about for the rest of my life
because that makes me nuts. Who are not allowing things
to happen or allowing things that never should happen. We're
talking about molesting of students by other students. We're talking
about somebody grabbing them on the way home or standing
at a school bus stop. To not allow kids to
be able to communicate in an emergency situation is stupid,

(02:44):
and I just I don't see that. Tell them, don't
use them during school, that's fine, make it, we'll confiscate it, fine,
suspend it after a second offense, fine, But to not
allow them access to that communication is stupid.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
Last year, new state law required districts to implement policies
on cell phone use. Schools that opted to ban self
unsaw and improvement in student engagement, attendance, grades, socialization, and communication.
According to our great governor here in the state of Ohio,
he said this, We've heard repeatedly from teachers, principals, school
board members, superintendent's parents who say that when cell phones

(03:19):
are banned during the school day, schools transformed before their
very eyes. That was a quote from DeWine. It's time
for us to finish the job. Time to ban cell
phones in every Ohio school. Then there is a out
of Dublin City Schools. The superintendent there said his district's
total ban met very little opposition. Some parents argue they
need to be able to reach their children in emergencies,

(03:41):
set emergencies. Kids need to be paying attention to directions,
not their phones. Boy, there's there's two very very very
staunchly different sides to this argument for people. I told
you too and I and this was all there, but
I said, you know, I'm indifferent what happens here. I'm

(04:01):
just gonna enforce it. If they're not allowed to take
it or what have you, I will tell you this.
And this just happens to be an instance where Stone
was abiding by And I know I referenced him a lot,
but he's my only reference because he's my only one
in school now. He's in fifth grade. And so he
sent me a message the other morning. I told you,

(04:22):
I was kind of making fun of it, saying, what
of my uber eats. I'm bringing his lunch to school, Dad,
I need my lunch.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
I forgot it.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
And then I replied to him, and there's nothing crickets
he sent it. He said, he ran out to his locker,
sent the message, put the phone back in his locker,
went back to class, and the reason he didn't reply
until three thirty seven was because he got on the bus.
And then at that point he looked at his phone
and I said, maybe reply a little quicker next time, buddy,

(04:49):
because I replied to him and said, what time's your lunch?
Blah blah blah. Well you just did it, and this
was I don't know what the don't there. That is
part of the rule.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Nerve wracking and inconvenient, but he was responsible. He did
the right thing he did.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
And I'm smiling right now because I'm going that must
be their policy, and you know what I'm I guess
I'm not gonna win parent of the Year award because
I don't really know their policy. But he goes, dude, Dad,
I'm not allowed to have it with me in class.
And I'm like, okay, well that's fine, buddy, you know,
but he goes, don't get mad at me. I wasn't
allowed to have it. I put it back in my locker.

(05:25):
So that is my point that kids are able to
abide by this. So do we really need to ban
them from going inside?

Speaker 2 (05:32):
Well? School really want to go forward? With the premise
that children are the problem. I think all people are
the problems. Human beings are the problems. So you want
me to go along with it, I'll go along with
it very easily, with this call of silk. No phones
for children in school or staff or faculty, because they
are just as susceptible to checking their damn Facebook page

(05:53):
as the fifteen year old. And there are way too
many people in the teaching profession that they got their
cell phone up there, they're taking a test, they're on TikTok. No. No,
I apply the rule to all. Nobody can have a
cell phone in schools. Okay, then I'll sign off. But
until until that is an equal situation there. I know.

(06:14):
I think you're penalizing these kids.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
Let them have it, Let them have a chance to
abide by the rules. Because I had a shining example
where he.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
Was he did the right thing.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
I thought that was pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Maybe, just maybe this will encourage more kids to follow
rules and do the right thing. If you say, look,
you can't use them during school, I do. We'll take
it away. First offense will take it away. Second, we'll
suspend you three days. Third, we'll suspend you five days.
