Speaker 1 (00:00):
I know, Zach is that you're not a major football
guy right now.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
I like football watcher, but I'm not like a huge,
huge fan.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
I enjoy it too, but I'm not an addict. If
there's something better to do, I will do it. I
am an OSU Buckeye fan. I'm a Cincinnati Bengal fan,
but I'm not a buck Eye nut. However, with that
being said, the announcement came out yesterday. We're getting a
UFL team here in Columbus, Ohio, and I'm going to
tell you what, I'm excited. I want to go to
(00:29):
those games. I want to see. I've I went to
Destroyers games, both versions of the Columbus Destroyers. I liked
having that here. I mean, it was arena football. This
is the United Football League. It's going to be outdoors
at the the what they call the Historic Crew Stadium,
which just means the Old Police basically. But I understand
(00:52):
it's either going to be the Houston or what's the
other team. It's going to be a transplant team. So
it's not like they're going to expand the UFL. Right now.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
All the team I think they're from Florida.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
One of them's from Florida I think, so Okay, and
the other I think is Houston. Those are the two
possible teams that are are supposed to be moving from
where they.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Are now the UFL there. This is not derogatory in
any way, shape or Form'm just ignorant on it. The
skill level or those guys are I mean, professional football players.
But are those guys who are I don't like, just
below NFL or trying to still get in.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
I suppose some of them are probably trying to still
get into the NFL. I watched you know, a few
of their games this past spring. It was pretty entertaining football.
The skill level was there, the even the media presentation
was pretty good as far as the field coverage and
the announcing and so forth. I think they're viable. I
really think they are viable. One of the co owners
(01:55):
of the team that's coming here to Columbus, who is
also co owner of the of the league itself, is
Dwayne the Rock Johnson. So that's gonna be a big boost.
You know, well, I mean, Arnold's muscles have kind of
shrunk over the years. We need another muscle bound guy
to come to Columbus all the time. So Dwayne Johnson coming. Yeah,
it'd be cool. But I'm actually and I'm just wondering,
(02:15):
you know, am I I've been waiting. There was several
years ago an announcement that we were going to get
a football team, which the Germaine family I think had
something to do with, and then that never transpired. The
Destroyers tried again, they folded again. I'm just I'm hoping
(02:36):
this time around, maybe we get it, maybe we get
it right and things go well. But as I was
talking to a couple of people online last night and
talked to one person in the person this morning, all right,
I guess early afternoon, I feel like I'm an odd
man out here. I don't know if people just don't
want any more football? Are they protective of the Buckeyes?
(02:58):
Do they think there's no room in this to Ohio
for another league since we've got the Bengals and the
Browns already. I'm not sure what it is, but I
almost feel out of place being enthusiastic about this team
coming next year. No, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
I think a lot of people will go I mean,
football is huge here, so what what when is the
season for UFL?
Speaker 1 (03:18):
They are a spring summer football so spring of twenty
six is when they're supposed to start.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
Here, that's a little a taste of football waiting for
the Buckeyes to play again.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
Right. They don't want to be competition for the NCAA
or for for the NFL, so they play in the
spring in the summer, and I just I think that
will be a wonderful thing here. I don't know a
two one nine eighty six. If I'm excited for all
the wrong reasons, tell me, or if you're with me,
tell me I'm not standing alone either. That would be nice,
(03:51):
But I'm just I'm just curious if I don't. Maybe
it's the boy who cried Wolfe syndrome. Maybe we were
told we're going to get it and now we didn't
get it, and everybody's just waiting until actually, you know,
the first game, before they believe it's going to happen.
That could be too That could be too. They the
(04:11):
team uniforms, unlike the arena league are are much more palatable,
at least to my eyes. In the UFL, there's not
a lot of you know, freaky pastel or fluorescent stuff
or anything like that. I just I think they're a
good fit for Columbus, Ohio. I really do, and I'm
(04:31):
glad that I don't know who had what meetings or
pulled what strings. I notice I have not have you
seen any kind of statements from city hall on this? No,
I'm just wondering, did did the city government have anything
at all to do with bringing them here? Or was
this all private interest? It wouldn't surprise me to find
out that it was all private interests.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
I mean they they passed what did they pass on
or didn't even try to go for?
Speaker 1 (05:00):
What was that? I forget what it was like a.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Month Agos women's team?
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Was it the WNBA thing? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Yeah, like they didn't even attempt.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
It, didn't didn't bother to even throw their hat in
the ring.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Yeah, at this time with Caitlin Clark and the league
actually getting press and you.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Know, making more.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Revenue, Yes, it would put it with the perfect time
to do it.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
You keep wanting to talk about being in a major
league city. Well, you have to do some major league things,
make some major league moves and decisions, and and you
know you're never going to be seeing any as anything
more than the cowtown you don't want to be if
you don't go after the bigger thing.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
You got the toilets bring in the team.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
And I mean the UFL is not the NFL, but
still it's a step in the right direction. And it's
one more thing. I was just talking about the concerts
because there was what November eighth is when McCartney's in town, right, yeah,
I think, okay, and then Cago is also in town,
and I forget who, there's somebody else playing that same night.
(06:05):
Three major concerts going on in Columbus that night, all
at the same time, plus all of the the you know,
non major entertainment options that are out there. That's that's
a great night. It's wonderful to see something like that.
But it doesn't have to be one night out of
ten years. We have the facilities, we have the venues
(06:30):
for the w NBA, absolutely no reasons something couldn't have
been worked out with Ohio State University for Saint John Arena.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
Right, And just so people know, like some people might
know this, that McCartney guy pretty popular. Yeah, if you
ever heard of the Bay he was in a band
before he was in it was called Wings Wings that's right, Yes,
huge band in the late seven yeah eighty, Yeah, pretty
big draw. Could you could you ladies and gentlemen from
(06:57):
Wings McCartney.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
That's how they just sheds all the Beatles stuff. I
just I don't know. I just I'm excited about it.
I don't want to feel like I'm I'm stupid for
being excited about it, but I do feel kind of
lonely being excited about it. And I don't know if
maybe I'll see if I've got any friends, any connections
in other towns that already have teams, just to see
(07:22):
what kind of reception they get there. The audiences when
I've watched the games on TV, they're not like packing
arenas or anything, but they've had decent little audiences, sure.
And one of the cool things about a smaller audiences,
you know, the freebies and the giveaways and so forth.
The last Destroyers game, I went to the had my
grandsons with me, and you know, they got free footballs
(07:44):
and they because we were right there, we were like
four or five rows up, really good seats, and they
didn't have seventy thousand people in there to give stuff
away too. So if you were there, chances are you
were walking out with some kind of little premium from
the team, some piece of memorabilia. That was nice.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
I'm guessing that the food stand and stuff was a
little bit.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
Cheaper, yes too, Yes, concessions were cheaper as.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
We still love going to Florence's Freedom games. When I
lived in Kentucky they were minor league baseball because you
got to see guys who are really trying to make it.
The baseball was fun.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
Yeah, it was pretty cheap. And you've got I mean,
you go down to Huntington Park right now and watch
the Clippers play. First of all, it's a beautiful park. Secondly,
you know, probably at least half the guys on the
field stand a chance at getting called up at some point.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
Yeah, you'll never know who you're going to see, who
could be the next whatever.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
But as Clippers, you can go down on the field afterward,
take a picture with them, shake hands, meet them, talk
to them whatever. You may not ever get that chance
again if they get called up. You have to take
advantage of the opportunity. Same way with the you know,
the Buckeye football team. Look, we I think are probably
putting more guys into the NFL every year than any
other Big ten school is doing. And you get a
(08:59):
chance to go support it's your home team, even the
college team. There's a chance you may be meeting a
future superstar. And if tickets I have no idea what
ticket prices are going to be. They don't have to
build a stadium, it's already there. I doubt that they
had to pay a fortune for the use of the stadium,
because you know, they want to do something with it.
They don't want to just sitting there going to waste.
(09:22):
If tickets are relatively reasonable, I might be inclined to
be a season ticket holder. Yeah, people would.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Go, I believe, So it just depends.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
I don't I don't know.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
Coming from me, I don't have the best pulse on it.
I've never even been to a buck Ice game.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
So I've never been in no me either, I've been
real spring practice. I've never been to the Horseshoe for
a Buckye game. I'm much more comfortable watching it on
my sofa because.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
When I moved here, people are like, even if you
don't like the buck Eyes, you should go. It's such
an experience.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
The atmosphere, Yeah, the atmosphere is awesome. All the tailgating
and stuff around the Horseshoe is awesome. But I just
I'm not going to go in there with one hundred
and ten thousand people and then try to get out
and get home afterward. I'd rather watch it.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
Yes, what I did.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
I thought that was so radio is you
