Speaker 1 (00:03):
Let's f f T, s Y and Sports Grade Network
present Ball in his Hands by the hard Hardwood Takeaways.
It's nord welcome in. It's Hardwood takeaways right here on

(00:25):
Sports Grid. I'm your host today, Chris Welsh with Mr
Scott Bogman. That is right, Bogman and the Welsh here
for Hardwood Takeaways on the Sports Grid, the February eleventh edition.
Bogman only two plus one to the three total. That
two plus one, by the way, is three if you

(00:46):
didn't know. Yeah, I was gonna say two days after this,
but two days plus today, so that would be three
of basketball until we have the All Star break. Yeah, yeah,
just a couple of days away and then on Thursday.
Then hear all right, I'll just say a few games,
a couple of a couple of days whatever, uh, instead

(01:07):
of doing the math completely incorrectly. But I I think
I feel like I owe everyone an apology. I was
in such a terrible mood for yesterday's show. I don't know,
um I I don't know if you saw it, but
you should go on Twitter and look it up right now.
Look up. Bogdanovitch is shot against the Rockets in the

(01:27):
game yesterday. UM, because I'm not sure if you saw
that or not. I know it was your day off
from this show, so you may not have watched highlights
or anything yesterday, but I'm watching it right now. Just
it's it's incredible, Okay. So here's the inbound he is wow,
I mean to twenty six feet out, double covered, falling

(01:53):
backwards and absolutely thanks it just right in there and
Pete J. Tucker he just hit the ground. Just Tucker
had knocked down a three uh with one point six
seconds left to go to put the rockets up, and
he had been shooting uh terribly over like the last month,
so it kind of was like, that is a potential

(02:16):
game winning shot. It got PJ off the Schneide a
little bit, and everybody's talking about the small ball lineup
that nobody likes. They beat the Lakers and lose by
thirty six to the Suns uh, and it looked like
they had that game wrapped up, and then of course
Bogdanovitch knocks down that shot and um, and you know
that coupled with the terrible, horrible call in the Blazers

(02:40):
and Jazz game, which I don't like either one of
those teams so you would think I wouldn't have that
much emotion into it, but I just it was unbelievably bad. Yeah,
it just was not good. So would you say that
you either die a hero or you live long enough
to become the villain? They live enough to yourself become

(03:00):
the villain? Is that what you're trying to say? Yes,
that's what I would say. So, but I'm not Joe Empi,
so maybe I shouldn't be saying that. What was the
what was the whole deal with the I mean like
because everybody didn't freaked out about it, like, well this
was like you remember Tom Brady before the Super Bowl
put the uh you know, he had the weird picture
that everyone was like, what does it mean? What does

(03:23):
it mean? Everyone was doing the exact same thing. Um,
everybody was doing the exact same thing. For this. He
posted a picture of himself, uh, you know, giving a
to the crowd with his hand is in that big,
ugly brace that it's been in ever since he broke
that finger, and he posted you either die a hero

(03:44):
or live long enough to see yourself become the villain
hashtag the process on Instagram, and then the Dark Knight
is he becomes now, oh wait, you know that. I
think that was Harvey Dent. So face is probably a
two faced Harvey Dent, is what he's saying. And then
Jimmy Butler comes in and says, I know a place

(04:05):
where villains are welcome. So when Joel said to him,
damn right, my brother, why So what I'm not understanding
is why is he a villain? And Philly he's beloved.
He he's beloved. But there's this growing sense that Ben
Simmons and Joel Embia cannot co exist together. And uh,

(04:28):
it's been in it's been an issue. I think that
the people in Philly, and I may be getting at
flip flop, but I think the people in Philly want
and be there and they want Simmons to go. There's
been a couple of things where like they they lost
a game and um, someone said, hey, Joel, that's uh,
that's brutal, and he said, well, it ain't on me,

(04:49):
you know, and that's Simmons. So I always find it
interesting when we get into that space of like, you know,
these guys don't work together. These guys like I mean
that all just want to win a championship. The best
team combo together to work. Like I suppose you could
look at this Phillies Phillies, the Philly team, not the Philadelphias,

(05:13):
and you could say, if this construction of a team
can't win a championship, do they need to blow it up?
You know what I mean? Like you could do the
same thing about Boston. But at this point, it's like Simmons, Tobias, Harris,
Joel and bead Al Horford, Like what more can they
do that they could look at this team? I mean,
it's it's probably championship or bus but you know, even

(05:34):
if they don't get to the finals, they could see
that there's something wrong with it. But I just right, well,
there's just a lot of turmoil. They can't win a
damn road game to save their lives. There like nine
and twenty on the road something like that. But at
home they're amazing. They're they're really really good at home. So, um,
you know, they went on a four game road trip,
they were owned four. They come back home, they win

(05:55):
their first two games on their home court, and Alton
Brand has to do the old uh you know, vote
of confidence for Brett Brown because there are rumblings that
Brett Brown might be coaching for his job and you
weren't joking. By the way nine and nineteen road record
the Sixers have that is the exact same road record
as the New York Knicks, right, the New York Knicks

(06:19):
and the seventy sixers. Acceptable. I mean, the Sixers are
twenty four and two at home, so obviously there's a
difference with the Knicks there, but they both that that road.
What happens on the road that makes them fall apart? Yeah,
I I don't know. I don't know what it is, man.
So it's uh, it's nuts that all of this has
been happening. I'm just looking at their road games. Here

(06:40):
are some weird road losses. They lost to the Suns
on the road. They lost on the road to Orlando. Um,
let's see, I mean Toronto is not a big one.
They lost to the Knicks on the road. They lost
to the Wizards on the road. These are not good teams. Like,
I'm leaving the good teams out of here. They now.
They beat the Pistons, they law two games to Orlando

(07:01):
on the road. They lost to the Pacers, lost to
the Rockets, lost to the MAVs the Pacers again. Um, Toronto.
That's not a surprise. They've lost two road games against
the Knicks this year and one to Atlanta. The seventies
sixers account for twenty five percent of the Knicks home wins.

(07:27):
They have eight home wins, have eight on the road.
If they're better on the road, better when they get away.
I don't know, it's this time of year, um, I
think the All Star break coming up. It's it's a
good time. This is a good time for it because
there's a lot of you know, the trade deadline stirred
up a whole bunch of stuff from you know, the

(07:48):
Andre Drummonds of the world and whatnot. You you're were
in buyout hell right now. You know where players are.
I think Michael kid Gil Chris is just getting set
to um to sign a contract with the Mavericks. So
you just got and you still have a lot of
this like buyout situation, teams kind of getting themselves set
for a playoff run. And I mean, you know, the
Darren Collison one was a surprise as well. Where Collinson

(08:09):
I don't know if you talked about this in the
last episode has kind of reverse track on uh coming
out of retirement. Yeah, I I did because I was
I was also mad about that, like why even bother,
Why haven't bother going through all of this? Uh, you know,
this kind of teasing of of the Lakers and the Clippers,
when like, what could have changed your mind? What were

(08:32):
you looking for to change your mind to come out
of retirement? But it might have been the inverse, though, Bob,
you might be looking at it a different way. He
might have thought like, no, I want to do this,
and then when he got back around the game we
saw him in the stands with Genie Buss and he
got back around it, he rerealized like, oh, like, I
don't need to be involved in the politics, and I
don't like I actually don't want to come back. So

(08:54):
he might have told himself he wanted to. Though I
guess I just I don't see I don't see the
logic block sadding up. That's all like, uh, you know, anytime,
and this is what I said on the show yesterday,
anytime you're gonna jump back into like an old job
or an old relationship. Like I feel like you've gone
through the scenario million times in your head, and you
know you want to come back. So I was just

(09:15):
very surprised because it seemed like almost a you know,
it was definitely gonna happen. He was either gonna end
up signing with the Lakers or the Clippers, and he said,
you know what, Nah, I'm just gonna stay retired. It
was just very weird and I'm just and then That's
what I'm getting at, is like it's kind of a
little about a weird time right now where the teams
are trying to solidify themselves for their playoff run. There's

(09:36):
a lot of sitting going on right now, a lot
of players that keep showing up on the uh not
play log and the All Star Game. Um, it's it's
kind of a good recharger for for these teams that
kind of gets set and we're gonna have some days off.
I'm trying to remember how long it goes through. When
did they get back to play as you know, they
don't come back until Thursday of NEXTEME. Oh man. Yeah,
so it's gonna be just a full week of it.

(09:58):
So starting on Fridays, small slate on Thursday, going through Um,
you know, I think over the next couple of days
things we can do as well as we're just recapping
the games. It's kind of setting the stage for you know,
previewing the All Star Game and talking about the standings
and what the second half looks like. Probably maybe on
an episode, not for this episode, but you know, these
next couple of ones, we can maybe talk about the standings, Bogs,

(10:19):
and maybe you and I will kind of jump back
on a couple episodes together a decent time before we
get to All Star break, hit the standings, kind of
hit with the second half looks like, and obviously we
probably do that into the following week. But you want
to talk about the games that went down on Monday,
Let's do it Monday. Let's take a look at the
log here in what might have been Bog. You and

(10:40):
I were looking at this before. Is this the lowest
scoring game of the season. Don't know. I'm trying to
find if it is, but I'm going to be able
to Charlotte Hornets and the Detroit Pistons. The Hornets one
by scoring eighties seven points, yeah, eight seven eighties seven
to seventy six in Detroit was the finisher. And I

(11:02):
mean this is like nineteen five basketball, like back in
the day, We're like, oh, Pistons scored seventy six. All right,
makes sense. Three three point line game here, Muggs out
was Muggsy out, Alonzo not playing in this one. Rodman
was getting Yeah. I mean that's what this feels like here.
But Pistons they lost at home now nineteen and thirty

(11:24):
seven on the year, Charlotte. That was their seventeenth win
of the year. Christian Wood, who has been all the rage,
played twenty three minutes in this one, ten points, eight rebounds.
Thought Maker had a double double, played twenty four minutes.
He was twelve and twelve. Brown double double ten and twelve.
Actually surprising seeing multiple double doubles in here. Reggie Jackson
played twenty eight minutes a uh two for eleven from

(11:48):
the field, only scored eight points in this one, and
then off the bench you still had no derreck Rose
Morris had ten points, not much else like crazy on
the production side. Pistons seven threes in this one and
shot thirty from the field. So this, I mean, this
Pistons team, they are going to drag this down now
without Drummond for the rest of the year. I'm gonna

(12:09):
give you a stat and I don't know if you're
going to actually believe it, but I just read it.
This is the Hornets straight win against the Pistons. Really,
what would that would that account that's all the last
two that that's going back two straight seasons of four
and oh and then this season they're two and out.

(12:30):
That's what I was wondering if this is if this
accounted for three seasons or it was like all of
last year and so they got two more games to go,
of course, but it's weird because since two thousand seventeen,
you're saying, right, and the Hornets had lost five straight
games and thirteen of their last four team coming into

(12:51):
this game. You know, the Hornets kind of started well
early in the season, a lot better than anyone gave
them credit for. I remember on our preseason show where
we were kind of going over the Vegas win totals,
the Hornets had the lowest one, and um, it made sense,
and they really kind of reverted to the team we
thought they were going to be in the preseason here

(13:12):
and this snapped a five game win streak. And for
whatever reason, the Pistons just can't beat the Hornets, Like
when the Rockets lost to the Suns the other night.
The Rockets beat the Suns thirteen straight times in a
row until they lost by thirty six. So weird, weird
stuff happening on the weird theme is definitely correct for
this season. Yeah, it's just like a weird run going
on right now. Over on the Hornets side, Dante Graham

(13:34):
had a double double fourteen points, eleven assists. Cody Zeller
had ten rebounds but was only three for nine from
the field for six points. Terry Rosier four for thirteen,
eleven points, seven rebounds, a couple assists. You know, if
you take out Davante Graham, the entire team had a
combined eight assists. Without DeVante Graham, they combined eight assists

(13:55):
in this one. Um off the bench Malik Monk seventeen points,
three rebounds, three steals, hit a couple threes in this one.
They were also under under from the three point line.
There were nine for thirty six under from the field
as well. So, I mean this was this was not
like a defensive struggle. This was just like really bad,
really really bad offense. Yeah. Yeah, it's just, uh, a

(14:19):
weird game. You know. Neither one of these teams shot
very well. It was thirty eight percent for Charlotte and
thirty five percent for Detroit. So just a bad shooting game.
Moving through the Brooklyn Nets beat the Pacers one oh six,
one oh five, Pacers thirty one, twenty three on the year,
Brooklyn twenty four and twenty eight over on the Pacers side.

(14:40):
Devonas Sabonis led the way with twenty three points, ten rebounds,
and eleven assists. That's a triple double. Friend does thirty
eight minutes. He was eleven for fifteen. He was awesome.
T J Warren nineteen points with a couple of steals,
Miles Turner fifteen points, five rebounds, and Victor Oladipo got
twenty seven minutes in this one with twelve points, four rebounds,

(15:01):
three assists, nothing on the three point range, shot just
under fifty percent, and then just throwing in here with
the Nets. Double digit scoring for every single active player
but one. Wilson Chandler, who played fifteen minutes off the bench,
was the only person to not have double digit points.
The starters. Spencer denwitdi one and eleven eleven assists was

(15:23):
winning shot to five seconds left, knocked down a triple
to win it, and he's a madman. Thirteen and fifteen
off the bench. Just of note, DeAndre Jordan's eleven points
nineteen rebounds in twenty eight minutes. But Spencer Dinwiddie, I mean,
you want to talk about just what a season they've had.
If we're reflecting and thinking about the All Star Game,
it's amazing what he's done, kind of filling in as

(15:43):
this team has been just riddled with injuries and nonsense. Yeah,
he stepped up and they needed somebody. I mean, there's
still only the seventh seed and probably not even as
good as we thought they were gonna be. But uh,
they'd be way worse off without him. Did you see
the uh the Pacers were channing w and Lavert got
to the line. It actually shook him a little bit.
They were channing Kyrie hates you clap clap, clap, clap, clap.

(16:08):
Really yeah, yeah it was. It was a pretty funny moment.
I mean I thought it was funny. I don't know
that Carris Laverd I would think it's funny. I'm gonna
give you, um another stat here. You know, Oladipo has
been on the struggle, but right it's been it's been
a rough go. He's played in five games so far.
I don't know if this is counting tonight, But I

(16:29):
don't think it's gonna get much better anyway. I want
you to take a crack at what his field goal
percentages over the five games. Oh, I would imagine I
mean lower. Oh okay, so we're getting ridiculous here, like
thirty lower point one percent and that's over six games

(16:51):
because that is counting this game tonight. So uh, it's
just brutal, you know. I mean, he's gonna get back
and he's gonna be okay. I mean, I mean, I
think so. He was also the worst on the Pacers
with the plus minus of minus eleven, So just he's
not doing it right now for the Pacers, but he'll
get back at some point. I I believe that he's

(17:11):
just he is struggling, I mean, missing so much time
coming back off that injury. Um, he is definitely on
the struggle bus and better ballad singer than basketball player.
As of the inverse of the Detroit and Um, the
Detroit and Charlotte game was the Magic in the Hawks
one thirty five to one twenty six, by the way,

(17:37):
unreal twenty three and thirty one for the Magic, Hawks
fall to fifteen and forty. Still no Clint Cappela in
this one. He did not make his debut, but John
Collins twenty two points, eight rebounds and thirty three minutes.
Trey Young he was twenty nine points with nine assists,
three for eleven from the three point line, but twelve
or thirteen from the free throw. The rest of the

(17:58):
starters are relatively quiet it though. Off the bench dead
men fourteen points, nine rebounds and twenty eight minutes. Kind
of like coming back to life in his old stomping grounds.
We'll see what happens when Capella gets back and cam
Reddish eleven points, a couple of rebounds in twenty four minutes.
Been looking better as of late. And then on the
Magic side, a couple of twenty point scores. As a
matter of fact, they had four of them. Aaron Gordon

(18:20):
twenty six points with nine rebounds. He was ten for
twenty from the field. Vossovic twenty four, nine and nine,
he was ten for sixteen, Evan four in a drop
twenty two and Terence Ross twenty one off the bench.
So four dudes scoring twenty plus points for the Magic.
So I saw that Trey Young was three of eleven.
You said three of eleven on the threes, right, uh yeah,

(18:41):
five of the misses were from thirty feet and beyond
like it was practicing for the All Star Game. Don't
you go, why are you taking those shots? Come on,
don't don't do that stuff anymore. And this was a
huge fourth quarter for Orlando because they actually went in
to the fourth down a point and wound up winning.
Are actually down three points, wound up win by nine. Um.

(19:03):
They outscored the Hawks forty two to thirty in the fourth.
So the Hawk ranna back to back, so uh, kind
of a brutal loss because they hadn't until the end
and just gassed out. So another big offensive game. The
Toronto Raptors hosted the Minnesota Timberwolves and Raptors won one
thirty seven to one six. This was D'Angelo Russell's debut,

(19:23):
I believe played thirty two minutes, scored twenty two points
with five assist Karl Anthony Towns ten with seven assists.
He was only five for thirteen from the field, though
the four of the five starters had multiple three pointers made,
so minimum two from between Beasley, Towns, Herding, Gomez. I mean,
all the new acquisitions were in the starting lineup. Culver

(19:45):
came off the bench scored fifteen points. He was five
for eleven from the field for them. Over on the
Raptors side, four of the five starters scored twenty plus points.
Pascal Siakum had thirty four. He led the way fourteen
for twenty one from the field, hits six threes, Ronde
Hollis Jefferson twenty one points, Anobi twenty five with twelve rebounds,

(20:06):
three assists, three steals, and Kyle Lowry seven seven with
eleven assists. In forty minutes, he was nine for sixteen
from the field and hit four threes. The team hit
seventeen threes total, over fifty and fifty seven percent from
the field. So uh, I mean big, big plays out
of this game. Fifth straight victory for the Wraps, straight wins.

(20:30):
I went over it yesterday. I looked at the longest
winning streak in nba h wiki page, and to get
on that page, you gotta get to sixteen. So uh,
you know they're they're right in that realm. But I
also saw that this is the next game is on
the road against the Nets on Wednesday night, so we'll
see if they can pull that one out. But this

(20:52):
is the longest winning streak in Canadian sports professional sports history.
It's longer than any hockey streak or baseball Street week
or anything else. So congrats to the Raps and and
forty and fourteen, and I you know, the the Bucks
are just too good. But they're they're locking in on
that to see pretty hard. Now there are two games

(21:13):
up on the Celtics and the Raptors, second best road
um record in the NBA, best in the East, the
nineteen and seven on the road, best in all of
the NBA, or the Los Angeles Lakers with the twenty
seven and five. I'm not sure. I don't remember if
they're at home. I know they're playing the Suns tonight
where last night? So the best home record or away

(21:38):
record in the East, second best in all of basketball,
the Raptors. They're on a thing man um. Next game up,
Speaking of the Bucks, you mentioned them. The Bucks. They
beat the King's one to one eleven and this was
without g A. On the Buck side, they had three
guys scoring the twenty point marker Chris Middleton. He picked
up the slack twenty eight points, eleven rebounds eight Is

(22:00):
this in thirty four minutes? Brook Lopez dropped twenty and
Eric Bledsoe eight and eight. He was ten for sixteen
from the field. Over on the King's side, Harrison Barnes
twenty three points in thirty seven minutes. He was eight
for thirteen. Darn Fox had a double double seventeen points,
eleven assists with eight rebounds. By the way, Harrison Barnes
at five threes in this one, four of the five

(22:20):
starters with double digit threes. Off the bench, Buddy healed
fifteen points with seven rebounds in thirty three minutes. In
the Buddy healed on the bench movement, which um, I'm
not a big fan of, not the biggest fan of that. Yeah,
I don't know what's going on there. You know. I
talked to Aaron Bruski over on our in This League
Fantasy Basketball podcast about Buddy Heals specifically, and he said,

(22:42):
Buddy's just getting yelled at all the time by Luke
Walton and the other players and all that stuff. It's
not endearing him to want to stay in Sacramento. It
wasn't there rumors during the trade deadline of him potentially going. Yeah,
I mean, I don't know that anything was solid, you know,
because it's just not very smart for them to trade
an asset like him, But I don't know what they're
doing with them. You're absolutely right. And this is another

(23:02):
game that was one in the fourth quarter. The Bucks
won the fourth quarter by fourteen points wind up winning
by twelve. So they went into the fourth down two
and just took this game away from from the Kings.
And this is without their best players. So uh, just
not a very good result if you're a Kings fan,
because they had it until the last couple of games.

(23:22):
Here the ones that were finalized. As were recording this,
the Jazz beat the Mavericks one twenty three, one nineteen.
The Jazz was their thirty fifth win of the year. Mavericks,
who were getting Michael k Gil Chris thirty two, thirty
two and twenty two on the year. The highlights Podonovid
scored twenty three, Donovan Mitchell scored twenty three, Rudy Gobert
seventeen points with sixteen rebounds, and Jordan clarks in twenty

(23:46):
five off the bench, Porzingis twenty eight points hit three
threes in this one, and Tim Hardaway Jr. Thirty three
points out of nowhere twelve for eighteen from the field
as the Jazz got their thirty fifth win of the year.
Any notes on this one, No, I mean, uh, you
know this one is I'm at least the Jazz one

(24:06):
back to back games, right, I don't have to feel
as bad. Me and the Mavericks can go cry together.
The Nuggets they won their thirty eighth of the year
over the San Antonio Spurs, one seven to one twenty
Yoki's nineteen points, eight rebounds, thirteen assists. Jamal Murray scored
twenty six. Paul Millsock, coming off the bench in nineteen minutes,
scored twenty two points with seven rebounds. Might have something

(24:27):
there with him going on the second unit. Over on
the Spurs side, La Marcus Aldridge was pretty much everything
thirteen of twenty five, thirty three points with five assists,
hit four threes in this Uh the Spurs twenty two
and thirty one is things are moving along. I turned
that came off. The Spurs were up by twenty three
points at one point in this game, and they had

(24:49):
first quarter by there, they were up by ten points
coming out of the first quarter right right, and they just, uh,
you know, the Nuggets just come storming back in the
second half, and uh, you know, they had thirty six
and thirty eight and the third and fourth quarters respectively,
and that was as a great comeback for the Nuggets
and the poor Spurs on this eight game road trip

(25:10):
during that rodeo or whatever it is in San Antonio,
and uh, they only got three games left their own
five on the trip so far. So not a good
road trip for the Spurs at all. A couple of
games are just finishing up as were recording this bad Boy.
He They've got a pretty good lead over the Warriors
right now, it's about nine minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Of note in this um, I mean, on the heat side,

(25:30):
Jimmy Butler having a fantastic game. He's got a double
double in this one, Bama to Bayou. He's always doing
his stuff. Jake Crowder off the bench with nine minutes
left to scored nine team points. But maybe even more
of a note is just how good And I'm not
trying to, you know, avoid the really really good team
who's going to have their thirty fifth win of the year,

(25:50):
but on Golden State, you know, picking out what is
exciting is Andrew Wiggins looks better in this eight team points.
But Marquis Chris, who just got that extension, he's a
rebound shy, probably as you're seeing this hit a double double,
fourteen points, nine rebounds in twenty two minutes so far,
five for nine. It just you and I talked about this.
This was the Marquis Chris the Sun's thought they were getting,

(26:12):
and now State has them. I mean, Marquis Chris was
also like eleven years old when the Sun's drafted him
or whatever. I think he was nineteen coming out of
one year in college. So he's really developed. I mean,
you know, go from being waved to resigned to getting
an extension. Uh, it's been a roller coaster year for
that man, and he is proving himself right now. I

(26:34):
see that the Warriors have a guy named Tuscano Anderson,
and I believe I ordered that from Olive Garden. Now
you get that on Postmates. I think, right, that's right, yeah,
the Tuscano, Right, you go. And then the Lakers they've
got a pretty handed against the Suns about seven minutes left. Uh,
they're up by like, I don't know, seventeen points I
think right now. And uh, Anthony Davis twenty two points

(26:54):
in this Lebron James probably going to end this game
with a triple double. I'm guessing nine assists, eight rebounds
instead team points. Rondo twenty three points off the bench
against which people forget. Technically the Phoenix Suns drafted re
Gen Rondo because they drafted and then traded his right
so he was technically a Phoenix Sun before Boston Celtic
and off the Suns are on the Sun's team, Bridges
