(00:21):

Hunter Drew Well, of course starthim off with the edition of Roadrunners raft
Fire. Than Johnny, you andI are gonna do our very own edition
(00:42):
of Roadrunners raft Fire Special Awards Show. Yeah, we are. I'm excited.
It's about our it's about our turnthat we uh we give our intake
on on the players this week.Easy to make this podcast more about us,
Johnny, don't we? Don't we? So you're gonna do the odds.
I'm gonna do the Evans. Yes, and we're gonna every player on
this year's roster and Award, andI already see you missed one here.
(01:06):
We missed eighty two again again, and we missed him on the Rapid Fire
with Steve Potman Connor Geeky, andwe missed him on your list here.
But I've added him and I've gotit and we're gonna be We're gonna be
good. So we've got Hunter Drewcoming up. We're excited to talk to
him. Nominated by Matt Malalta. We'll see who Hunter nominates. We'll do
(01:27):
our Roadrunners Rapid Fire Special Awards. We've been around town this week. We
saw some friends of ours on Wednesdaynight at Rudy Texas Barbecue after we had
our usual Wednesday lunch at Beyond Bread. Johnny says, I have a new
hobby. We talked about his newhobby on last week's show on how he
(01:49):
built legos, and I said,go step on a lego. And now
Johnny has coined me with a newhobby. I didn't really think it was
a hobby, but I'll take it. I'm a proud person. I like
it to talk NHL playoffs. I'mnot sure why it has not gone well.
Edmonton in four doubled down on Edmontonin five, tripled down on Edmonton
(02:14):
in six, and Johnny were totallydone with Edmonton. But we do have
a story with Edmonton with Roadrunners tiessecond straight year that a former Roadrunner comes
in in the second round and almostalmost pulled it off for the Oilers,
(02:38):
Calvin Pickard going up against Connor Garlandfor Vancouver. Connor got a big goal
the other night for the Canucks. So we'll talk about Roadrunners ties in the
playoffs. Oh, by the way, never got to this, but we've
done some research projects this offseason,me and Johnny, and we're gonna tell
you a little more about those. We've got Steve Potvin involved in these research
(03:00):
projects now, So all sorts ofstuff coming up on the podcast after we
talk to Hunter Drew joining us nownumber thirty six on Your Roadrunners Hunter Drew,
Hunter, how's it going, man, I'm good. How are you
guys? Good, good to seeyou, Thanks, thanks for coming on.
Just want to get one thing outof the way early. Johnny,
(03:21):
you can tell is clearly at homeand this is not a situation where we
work from home during the summer wherewe just do whatever. He's had an
ongoing saga with his car since Novemberwhere the check engine light keeps coming on,
and yesterday picked up his car fromARTS Pit Stop for the second time
(03:43):
in two weeks. They finished theproject. It was going to solve it
once and for all the pet boysthat the dealership nobody could handle it.
Art finally handled it. And thenJohnny's driving home and his check engine light
comes on. So after the interviewHunter, he's going back to Arts Pit
Stop and then he's driving into theoffice. So don't think that we're taking
(04:04):
it easy working from home. Thisis not a COVID thing where everything's on
zoom. Johnny will be here.Maybe you guys were I don't know,
not Roadrunners. The auto shops likeright next to my place, so I
just thought go there after this andthen head to the office just to so
(04:25):
they can check it out once moreto see what else is wrong with it.
So so so don't tell, uh, don't tell Steve Potman. We're
taking shortcuts here on the podcast. All right, I gotta ask you about
your hat because I have a followup question about your hat that we didn't
ask Maddie that maybe you can helpus with. So we'll last that after
Rapid Fire. You can put iton back backwards again if that's perfect,
(04:47):
most comfortable. So we start everyinterview off with rapid fire. We started
it with Steve Potman when we hadhim on first podcast of the off season
a couple of weeks ago, andwe're like this, this actually works.
We had Steve give a description,a one word description of every player on
our team with one word. Johnny, what did he say about Hunter?
(05:08):
Oh Man, what did he sayabout Hunter? We're gonna have to find
that now. We ruined it.Anyway, it was. It was very
flattering Hunter. And then last weekwith Maddie, we had Maddy just describe
a bunch of random things in oneword. One of those things was who
(05:28):
should we get next on the podcast? And this is where you last question?
And maybe we just answered this, but who do you think we should
talk to next on the podcast?Maybe maybe given Drew a ring, see
what he's up to. Sounds Ifeel like that'd be a good one.
We've got his phone number, we'lldo it. Let's do it. Yeah,
(05:49):
we did it. We eventually gotHunter. Hunter, you got a
new phone number, and I textedyour old phone number. I had your
new phone number, texted your oldphone number. But you're such a you're
such a good guy that you wereable to to unpack all of it and
still find us even though I textedyour old phone number. Yeah, I
saw that email and I was likewhy, And then I realized I forgot.
(06:11):
I got a new phone out happeninga lot which I had the phone
number. I had it, justlike your six to one three. I've
got your five to two Oh,and I don't know, man, should
I delete the little Tucson I gota Tucson phone number? You're five to
two? Oh? Should I deletethe six to one three? I would
I delete it? Now? Okay, so we're not not not gonna need
that again. All right, let'sget to rapid fire. I'm gonna ask.
(06:33):
I'm gonna say one word, Johnny'sgonna say one word, and we'll
go from there. So, uh, your drive back home, long,
your line mates, beauties, yourtwenty three twenty four season rollercoaster Matthew Vilalta
Goofy Steve Potman prepared, Eric Bechtel, Funny justin Kirkland, legend wide out
(06:54):
Tucson, exhilarating the favorite road hotelin the city. It's my turn,
Johnny but you skipped me. It'smy turn Ida. Yeah, you skipped
me. Pacific Division. Hunter, this is just too This is too big
of a challenge for us. Thisis only the third episode of the off
season. We're still oops the PacificDivision. Travel. Favorite road hotel in
(07:18):
like which city? Probably San DiegoDay game or seven PM game seven PM.
Favorite restaurant in Tucson. That's ahard one. I'll say al Charle
just because it's easy. There's alot. Favorite cheat meal in Canada or
the US both Canada, poutine,US probably burger from Five Guys. Similar
one here. Favorite dessert cheesecake NHLdebut, exciting your playoff goal this season?
(07:43):
Exciting but sad. Favorite hobby probablygolf. Favorite Roadrunners theme Night.
I don't know what it was called, but the beach Jerseys, the Hawaiian
or whatever. I like that one. Okay, let's take it a step
further. Broadrunners Beach Night Jersey beautiful. Favorite golf club. I'm gonna say
a nine iron. Favorite golf club. I'd say Rivendell Rate near Mount Valta's
(08:05):
house. Awesome, we did it. We only screwed it up once.
Hunter, that should be pretty good. And you you knew that when Johnny
screwed it up, I was probablygonna screw up the next one, just
because that was such a jerk tohim about it. But we did it
rapid fire. We all made itArizona all that you hoped for when you
came from the ocean of the desert. I would say more. To be
(08:28):
honest, I didn't know it wasgoing to be obviously you go there on
the road, but like, Ididn't know it was that beautiful, To
be honest, I loved it.The blue skies, That's what That's what
sets it apart for me, right, the blue skies every morning when you
wake up. My biggest my biggestthing that I'll say about California. You
get the marine layer. Most more, you don't have the blue sky.
(08:50):
You don't have the sunshine to thatis true, That's very true. I
love it. I love the temperaturein Arizona too. Yeah, it always
always feels good. Did you findthat your blood got thin at any point
so that when we go on theroad or it drops into the forties in
the morning heading to practice that you'relike, this is the coldest I've ever
been. I just I'd go tomy car in the morning and I'm in
(09:11):
Celsius, but it was like tendegrees celsius, which is not cold,
and I would be my teeth wouldbe chattering, I'd be freezing. Don't
worry about us, Hunter, becausewe did celsius fahrenheit conversions last last week
with Maddie, so ten degrees isforties. We know that, we know
that. What was the part ofthe organization that you enjoyed the most coming
(09:37):
coming to Arizona. I would probablysay the people, Like it's ever It's
just surrounded by really good people. Not that there wasn't good people in other
organizations I've been in, but thiswas probably the best, Like top to
bottom, I would say, kindof like salt of the earth, just
like every single guy you meet rightfeels like the nice nicest person you've ever
(09:58):
met exactly, whether it's their firstyear, eighth year, that's that's kind
of how I kind of how Ifelt like my first year, and and
then and then this year it's it'sa it's a good thing. And you
look at Steve and John, thoseare those are our kind of constance and
Eric Bechtol is in his eighth year, like those the guys that you know,
they've they've been here every year sinceyear one. You can kind of
(10:20):
tell like it kind of you know, it exuberates. I guess them right.
I think it's a culture thing too. They built like a really good
culture there. And it's not justlike hockey staff or like on ice or
whatever. It's complete organizationwide. Somade the playoff run this year, and
(10:41):
it was it was your your firstyou know season, right, battling for
for first place, big games inApril, home ice in the playoffs,
and and you look like your yourfirst year San Diego. Great year,
but COVID shortened it. Second year. Good year, but kind of the
bubble playoff thing. No, Iasked that the next next couple of years,
the short short run in Rockford lastyear, but this year battling for
(11:07):
first big games, what'd you thinkof it? Exciting? Like that's you
know, I mean, don't getme wrong. Every game is fun when
you're playing you know, seventy whatevergames, But when you get down the
stretch, those are like the reallythe fun ones, and like the you
know, you kind of like havea different mindset, a different approach.
It's like every game feels like amust win. So you have to bring
(11:28):
your best every night, and likethat's obviously why we play. It's that's
like the most fun time of year. So I loved it. Obviously it
was unbelievable. What do you thinkwas the biggest area for you personally that
looking back last year at this timeto this year, you're like, all
right, twelve months ago, Ididn't see me adding this becoming this.
(11:50):
I would say probably like the mentalside of it, Like you know,
everyone talks about or thinks about whateveron ice and what you're doing, and
you know, but like the mentaltoll it can take, like especially like
obviously I was getting scratched late inthe year last year in Rockford a little
bit, and I was getting scratchedthis year, and then you kind of
have to keep your mindset like youryou know, your approach and Patzi always
(12:13):
calls it the growth mindset. Butthat's like I think that was the biggest
change for me, the biggest kindof like difference from from even early this
year, but last year to thisyear. For sure. Did you have
a favorite game, like I thinkof that that first game he played for
US against San Diego ten thirty am, the school day game. You scored
first five minutes of the game.Did you have a favorite game this year?
(12:39):
I think that was up there.I think the two in early in
April, the back to back wehad in San Diego was fun. I
think probably maybe my favorite was probablythe I want to say it was our
third last game maybe in Coachella. We kind of had a little bit of
a depleted lineup, but we goin there and beat the best team,
I mean, top whatever two tothree team in the league. Like that's
(13:01):
shows a lot about our group. So Hunter, We talked to Matthew VILLELTA
last week. We asked him howyou two met. You guys met playing
lacrosse and you see each other atthe ice drink a lot. He said
that you're always a year above him, but you guys are still keeping in
touch throughout high school and then whenyou go but guys both went to the
juniors. But just tell us whatthat friendship's been like for you two and
(13:22):
knowing each other for so long andthen now this year playing in the same
professional hockey team. Yeah, it'sit's cool. It's weird, Like it's
weird in a sense almost like youknow you I always I'm so used to
having my home buddies and my likehockey season buddies, you know, because
you always are traveling, you're alwaysgoing away. But it's nice to have
like someone that's constant, you know, you always I hang out with them
(13:45):
every summer, but I also obviouslyspent time lived with them this year,
so it is it's cool to havethat kind of relationship both like during the
season and at home. Like I'veseen him already. I've been home for
a week and I've seen him likethree or four times already, so like,
you know, it's kind of it'skind of nice just having that.
And then obviously, like when you'regoing through like hard times like during the
year, like even like those kindof dark days of the year like January
(14:07):
February, when you kind of feellike, you know, it's right in
the thick of it, like justhaving someone that you can just talk to
about whatever, you bring back oldmemories from like high school or you know,
whatever, whatever the situation is.Fishing in the summer with him and
his brother like things like that.It just kind of keeps you moving along.
So it's been really nice. Maddieand Wyatt, two twins, tell
(14:28):
us about tell us about your twin. You've got a twin too, I
do. Yeah, he's he isa financial advisor at a bank downtown Scotia
Bank. He loves it. He'she's I think he's probably two or three
years in now, and he's slaveand every day, I mean I go,
I try to go have lunch ofthem as much as I can because
obviously I'm not home too much. But yeah, he's pretty quiet guy.
(14:52):
He likes, you know, kindof staying to himself a little bit.
He's he's funny though, he's Imean, obviously we're close. He's I
grew up literally we shared a roomI think until we were like grade nine
something like that. So he's goodthat he's quiet. He just kind of,
like I said, keeps to himself. But when he opens up a
little bit, it's funny. Hemakes me laugh. So he's good to
(15:13):
have a round. Obviously not identicalthough, right, No fraternal, He's
we don't. I mean, somepeople say we look the same. I
don't think so. Obviously, I'mlike pretty ginger colored beard and hair.
He's more brown hair and he's alittle bit shorter, but we're similar both
of beards, both were glasses.I don't know, do you ask him
(15:33):
like about the markets and financial stuffand interest rates? And I do joke
around with them, but it sucksbecause I actually can't work, Like I
can't do any like work with him. You're not allowed to work with your
family, gotcha. God, hecan't actually help me at all, which
kind of sucks. Yeah, right, you're not allowed to work with your
family when it comes to that stuff. Yeah, you can't even like,
(15:54):
like he's not even allowed to havea meeting with me. Oh interesting,
it's so weird. Like he's obviouslythe one guy I would want handling my
money and he can't. Right,He's not even allowed to open me up
a bank account, Like it's gotto be someone else. So it's all
right though. So you're drafted bythe Anaheim Ducks. Going back to Matthew
(16:15):
Voalalta, he was drafted by theLos Angeles Kings, one of the biggest
rivalries in the NHL, and ofcourse the goals in Theonta Ray two.
How was it playing against him foryears? And I should have asked Maddie
this, did you ever score onMatthew Valalta when when you guys played against
each other. Yeah, he's actuallyluckier on the same team, so I
can't score on him anymore. ButI the one year, I think my
(16:37):
are both of our third year,I think I scored on him like six
or seven times, which is kindof funny. Oh really, we'd always
have a laugh about he always todaywhen I'm skating by him. But yeah,
that's good. It was. Itwas. Yeah, those are the
fun games too, because it's likea day trip, right, like only
an hour even based on traffic, but say it's about an hour and a
(16:57):
half drive. So we would alwaysbring fans and they would always bring fans
to us, so you know,it was kind of I don't know,
it was kind of like intense likekind of thing. And then obviously on
the side and I'd always be laughingwith Matt, I be text and on
our FaceTime and after the game andstuff, we'd be talking about it.
So yeah, those were fun games. We also played them like eight times,
(17:18):
so yeah, bets on the side. And you played with Justin Kirkland
in San Diego last year too,and now you guys were both on Tucson
this season, so just what wasthat like played with them last year and
going deep for a playoff run thisyear with him. Yeah, it's I
mean I spent a lot of timewith him. I hung out with him
(17:38):
a lot. I mean, obviouslyI got traded and you know, he
had a bit of a situation goingon. But I hung out with him
a lot last year, and Ihung out with him a lot this year.
I'm really close with him. He'sprobably the one of the best guys,
Like, take hockey out of theequation. He's just one of the
best people ever. You know,he's like so down to earth, He's
(17:59):
always wants to helpe, he's he'she'll do anything for you. And his
wife and my girlfriend are very closetoo, so they have that relationship.
And we'd hang out the four ofus a lot, which is nice.
So yeah, I spent a lotof time with him. He's the best
guy ever. He's such a goodleader, such a good guy to have
around, and he's always making melaugh and and keeping me from going insane.
So he's the best. I gottaask you when you when you and
(18:23):
Maddie were playing in California and opponentslike you see guys go to center ice
at warm ups and you're like,oh boy, where's this going like it's
either we're gonna discuss something to handlelater or we're just going to catch up
on times. And I'm sure peoplewould see you and Maddie meeting at the
(18:45):
redline and being like, oh boy, where's this, where's this gonna go?
Yeah, well that's always funny. It's actually funny. We have a
couple like pretty cool pictures or likevideos of us like talking and stuff.
I think my mom actually has oneframe somewhere in the house. But yeah,
it's we have some some good lastbefore the game, and I'm always
telling him I'm gonna score on him, and he's usually telling me it's not
(19:07):
gonna happen. So it's we havesome good chocoals. So Hunter, I
was doing some research before this, and it's not that you played in Thesolovak
League during COVID because we had adelayed start to the season and you kind
of went on a lone assignment thereand you had pretty good numbers playing in
that league. Just what was thatlike, of course, there's an entire
(19:29):
pandemic going on, so that's mighthave been one thing, but just what
was the differences between playing it ina European ice sheet to playing here in
North America. Yeah, I mean, obviously the ice is bigger, that's
like the simple common answer whatever. But I was a defenseman at the time
over there too, so way differentfor me, like in terms of like
having your gap or like how youapproach, Like I find, like say,
(19:53):
being on the penalty killer being onthe power play, like there's so
much more room, so like youalways have to be like con just of
like where you are on the iceand like what like, especially certain guys,
like you know, more skilled guyslike you, they have so much
space. You got to contain thema little more. Like it was.
It's just way different hockey. It'sa little less physical too. And obviously
(20:14):
unless you're Patrick Kotch obviously, butit's a little less a little less physical
over there. But yeah, theystill moved to puck. Well, it
was it was life at the rink. Was was cool. It was like
nice to get that experience because youknow, at the end of my career
over here, I'd like to goback to Europe at some point and kind
of play hockey, travel like kindof do that kind of thing. Because,
like you said, it was thepandemic. So when I first got
(20:37):
there. It was actually not badat all. Sorry as a train going
by, but it was we've gotour we've got our fair share of those
here, Dad, Yeah too.I'm surprised we haven't had one yet.
Yeah, but yeah, no,it was. It was cool. It
was. It was when I firstgot there and not not everything was shut
down, but then like a weekend, everything was completely shut down, so
like I didn't really get the fullexperience like away from the rink kind of
(21:00):
like traveling and all that stuff. But it was still cool. Like I
made it to Austria, I madeit to Hungry like you know, you
see cool places like that. Soyeah, all in all, the experience
was pretty cool. How far isthe train tracks from from your house?
Not very far, probably one hundredyards. It's is it an all hours
of the night thing? Twenty fourto seven or a couple times a day
(21:21):
or once a week. It's twentyfour seven whenever there's a train because the
train station. I live right bythe train station, like not too close,
but it's got to go obviously rightby me. So it's pretty much
commuter trains. Yeah, and anduh, cargo everything, gotcha, I
gotta ask you. I think Kim, and I asked you last year when
we had you on when we firstfirst met you and had you on the
(21:44):
podcast or in the off season, and haven't even thought of it because you're
such a heavy power forward right whenyou're playing for us, like you you
just you were a Ford, butyou transitioned from from defense to ford.
And I remember texting with Jake lastyear because we signed you, like right
at the beginning of free agency andwe're getting graphics and stuff and ready for
(22:07):
the announcement. I'm like forward right, He's like, yeah, forward,
forward because because because you were ad man, tell us about that transition
that you made as a pro fromdefensive and to forward and how that went
down. Yeah, it was weird. I mean it was kind of like
one of those things where I didn'tit was like, hey, you know,
what do you think about this? But it wasn't really like a choice,
(22:30):
you know what I mean. Itwas kind of one of those things
where we're like, you know,we want you to do this, so
you're gonna do it, obviously,Anahei, I'm telling me that I'm saying,
but yeah, it was. Itwas. It was weird. I
just think it's the less well, for me personally, the less I would
think when I'm on the ice wasthe best because then, like you don't
have time to think about like ifyou're making a mistake or if you're in
(22:51):
the wrong spot, like you justread and react kind of but as I
do it, this is my right, I guess. I just finished my
third year, so a little differentnow where I've kind of been in more
situations, like I kind of havea little more of a stranglehold on like
whatever would be thrown at me.So definitely different now. But yeah,
it was weird at the time,Like you skate so much more as a
(23:11):
forward. I realized, like yougot to be in better shape. I'd
say, I guess to be aforward because you're skating the full ice,
you know, once twice, threetimes a shift. Whatever. It is,
So definitely a different game, differentapproach to the game. But I
mean I enjoy playing forward and obviouslyin practice sometimes like you're around sometimes Adrian,
like I play d at practice ifthey need a guy, so like
(23:33):
it's kind of helpful for everyone,I guess. So yeah, it's it's
a bit weird, but I stilldo it from time to time. Your
hot streak at the end of theseason. I think you had nine points
in your last night regular season gamesand then you had the playoff goal,
and you talked about, you know, the games you were scratched this season
and just having that good mindset, just how are you going to use that
(23:55):
nice streak at the end of theseason to work on what you need to
work on this offseason and go intonext year with some momentum for yourself.
Yeah, I think that's a hugeI think a lot of not even hockey
sports in general's confidence right when you'reconfident in your game and you feel like
you know you're playing at your best, like that's that was huge. So
especially for me to have that latein the year, like like you said,
going into the offseason, like youkind of just carry it right in,
(24:18):
you know, you just you havethat kind of like swagger I guess
in the summer where like you feelgood and you like you know that like
you have something right away to buildoff of. You know, like you
you kind of like set a standardand it's like now you keep the standard,
but you also raise it next year, you know. And like I
always talk to pots, we alwaystalk about like not expecting anything like don't
expect to do this or get thisor score this many times whatever, but
(24:41):
it's nice to to at least kindof have a base to go off of
and and and kind of like, you know, keep that, like I
said, that swager kind of goingthroughout the summer and then into next year,
and a big reason why you're alsoable to score a bunch with that
big boy line of you. Travisb and Curtis Douglas said, you know,
(25:02):
obviously throughout the whole season, we'vesaw a lot of people, a
lot of players play with each otherbecause we saw a lot of lines shifting,
but that line stuck a lot inthe season. And just what was
it like playing with those two reallythe majority of the year. Yeah,
that was unbelievable. I mean yeah, Like I think just the way we
think the game, like as alion, the way we think and the
way we play is like perfect foreach other. You know, we kind
(25:26):
of like whatever, like not todive too in deep, but like we're
pretty simple players, you know whatI mean, Like we all like minded
and we just want to work.We just want to win battles. We
want to go to the net,We want to you know, get the
pock low to high, get outfront. Obviously, Doug's a big boy,
so he you know, opens uproot like me and Bear are pretty
big, but not you know, embarrassing to him. So he opens up
(25:48):
a lot of space for us,which kind of you know, we can
make plays. And obviously Bear obviouslyunbelievable on draws, defensively unbelievable. And
we would talk on the bench,we'd laugh. He's like, I'll win
a battle down low, I'll getit to you guys, and then you
go and I'll meet you up there, you know. So we kind of
had that little that little uh,I don't know, I guess we're on
(26:08):
the same page about like about thatkind of thing. And obviously, like
I said in the ozone, we'repretty simple. We're not trying to you
know, toe drag or beat aguy wide like. We're pretty pretty simple.
And it's perfect for each other,h or for for the group of
us to uh to compliment each other'sgames and and off the ice, we're
all really close too, So Ithink that helps translate very well on ice
(26:30):
off season plans for you anything onthe on the docket, yet, uh,
you gotta do a little bit oftraveling, uh being British Columbia for
about a month, and then I'llbe uh in Halifax where I trained the
last not last summer, but thetwo before that, and I'll be out
there with Pete deliberator, uh doinguh training out there and skating. So
(26:52):
uh yeah, that's that's kind ofit. Traveled a little bit, but
mostly just focused on training and anduh being prepared for September. Were you
were you training with Pete last year? Yeah, not last year, but
the two before that, gotcha,Yeah, so you know it? Yeah,
yeah, yeah, you guys.Yeah, more than just this year
and playing against him and Henderson,Yeah, exactly. So it was nice.
(27:15):
And then he moved in with uslate in the year or not late
year, but right in the middlethere when he got there, So that
was perfect. Any other any otherteammates you planned a cross paths with outside
of Maddie and Peter, Yeah,I think like there's the Toronto guys,
right, the Ontario guys like Gregyand Bear and Doug, like they're all
(27:36):
right there, like even well likeWellsy's and Niagara Falls a little further,
but like we meet in Toronto,we have a plan to go to a
Blue Jays game baseball game. Sothat'll be nice for all the Ontario guys
to get together and see each otherand and kind of just like catch up
a little bit, but not haveto worry about hockey or you know,
just kind of just kind of,you know, let loose whatever and then
just hang out. It's gonna beIt's gonna be fun. You can get
(27:57):
a group right at the ball thatwould be. That'd be perfect. You
you handle that, you'd be thesmart guy. I'd be like, hey,
guys, I got usick group rateat the ball game. Perfect.
We'll be I'll be uh my businessskills. Yeah, that's it. Hunter.
So we asked Matthew last time whoshould we get next? It was
you, So we're gonna ask youthe same thing. Who should we get
(28:19):
next? For next week's show?I think just talking about him, you
should you should do dilly. Youshould call Pete? All right? Is
he home? Do you know ifhe's home yet? Yeah? I think
he got home a few days ago, so he's perfect. We're getting We'll
get in touch with him. Hey, I have a question. We didn't
ask Mattie this, but you mightknow. Uh, And I texted him
(28:41):
too, but you know, youknow us and Patience. What what what
are the Balassas do on their farm? Do you know? You don't want
to know what they do. They'rethey're good. They they yeah, they're
they're crazy. They they so Wyatthis brother loves like dirt biking, and
(29:02):
they have like ATVs and stuff,so they do a lot of that.
But they they were turkey hunting andthey were duck hunting. They just love
to be out there. They gotlike cow and stuff like that, so
they're always messing around with the cow. It's kind of funny. I don't
want to Yeah, you can't.I can't. I mentionine too much what
they're doing. But it's good.Did they give you the hat that says
dairy boy that you're wearing? Actually, I actually took it from my girlfriend.
(29:23):
It's a girl's hat, but Ilike it, so I still kidding.
I like it too. It's anawesome hat. It is it is.
So any questions for us as wewrap things up, Hunter, No,
nothing, uh, nothing comes tomind. We appreciate it. Thanks
for coming on. What are youWhat are you going to do the rest
of the day here? After Igot a buddy in town. Who just
(29:47):
lived in Australia for a year.I haven't seen them and well, well
I was gone too, so almosttwo years I haven't seen him. So
I'm going to see him tonight, which is awesome. I'm really excited about
that. Awesome watching any watching anyhockey. Yeah, I've been watching hockey.
Been still still touching you. Stilla little bit sad. But I
can do I can do NHL.I won't do HL. No, I
(30:08):
can't do it. I can doNHL. Get into that. That's fun,
that's hockey. That's a hobby,right, that disconnects you. But
I hear you, Man, I'mnot gonna do tough. HL can move
on without us. We'll catch itnext year. Yeah, exactly. Well
thanks for joining us, man,We appreciate it. Thanks for you.
Know. I'm the communications guy,I'm the tech guy, but sometimes it
(30:30):
seems like i'm the worst communications guywith phone numbers and stuff and the worst
tech guy. When I can't getthe gear figured out how to work,
it always get bailed out by smartpeople like you. So thanks for figuring
it out. Thanks for coming onthe podcast, and have a great rest
of your your day, your night, your off season, and keep in
touch. Let us know if wecan do anything in the meantime. Awesome,
(30:52):
Yeah, that's great, thanks forhaving me on. Thanks Hunter,
Take care, man, take care. So there's Hunter Drew and he said,
as Peter Dilevatory is next, I'vegot Peter's phone number. He only
has one phone number. I likeHunter Drew walking around with two phones.
Two phone guys, No, heonly has one. He just switched his
(31:14):
number. So well effort. PeterDilvatory coming up for next week's podcast.
I'm not sure it's gonna be Monday. I'm not sure it's gonna be Tuesday.
There's a holiday involved. You getit when you get it. Okay,
that's what we're gonna do next weekfor the podcast. By the way,
Johnny I went back and looked forrapid Fire, went back and looked
at at what Steve Potman said about, uh, Hunter Drew. He gave
us three words selfless, growth, challenged, fourthward, personable. So Steve,
(31:42):
Steve had more than just one wordon Hunter Drew. Yeah, pretty
accurate there, especially with what HunterDrew said in the beginning of the season.
You know, he was scratched alot, and again that was going
to the death we had on theteam, and then by the end of
the season, Hunter Drew became oneof the most valuable players for the Roadrunners.
He had that big goal in theplayoffs to make it four to three.
(32:06):
Just wasn't enough, but still thatwas a very clutch moment. So
yeah, a good story for Hundredrewthis season, you know, being with
the San Diego goals and being tradedto Rockford and signing with twoson this season
again not getting a lot of playingtime to start, finds that connection with
the line of Curtis Douglas and TravisBarron and just proves that he's he's a
(32:27):
versatile player. He's a power forward. He's not afraid to get into the
you know, the messy areas andyou know, putting himself in front of
the nets. So I'm excited tosee what he's going to bring that momentum
into next year. I went backand looked, I had to find the
goal Se scored against Maddie. I'mlike, let's get a number here,
let's get a total. Firstly,I noticed, first couple of years of
(32:50):
his career in the AHL didn't havea beard. Then yes, it's kind
of kind of kind of like youlike clean face, and then all of
a sudden, the big she beard. He's going more the year out.
Now your guys's beards are kind ofthe same color too, Yeah, they
are, they are. So itwent back and looked so I thought we
might have some fake news here.I thought that maybe Hunter had misremembered some
(33:15):
stuff because I couldn't find any goalsagainst Maddie in twenty nineteen twenty twenty when
they were both Rikies twenty twenty twentyone twenty one to twenty two. Had
to get to the second half ofthe year, and then the goals for
Hunter started to drop. It againstMaddie February twentieth, twenty twenty two,
(33:36):
scored two in one game and thegame winner in a four to three San
Diego went against Ontario. A coupleweeks later, March twelfth, twenty twenty
two, one goal won assist againstMaddie. Two weeks later March twenty six,
twenty twenty two, had a goalon five shots. So in a
stretch of a month and a week, Hunter had four goals against Maddie.
(34:01):
And that's all he scored against MattWalalta in four years of playing against him
in the AHL. Four goals,Yeah, in a month long span.
Found it. Thought it was fakenews. Thought it might be fake news
for a second, But I didfind find the goals that the Hunter had
scored against Yeah, and he hadmentioned that a lot of them came in
(34:23):
a stretch. Probably just didn't havethe exact dates, but you found them.
I found him. You found thedates. And man, I obviously
it's probably hard to find, likethe highlight reels, but I wonder if
there's any like larceny saves of Volaltaon Hunter Drow. But you can pull
up every game that they just watch. Yeah, that's your homework assignment this
week might take a bit, mighttake a bit long. We still need
(34:45):
to talk about our homework assignments.Let's do about it now. You know,
this is this is this is whatour research projects have been this year.
Me thinking there's no way anybody saidmore than us, There's no way
anybody had any more NHL debuts thanus, There's no way this was years
(35:07):
though, there's no way anybody,uh had more wins than last year than
us. And then Steve Potman getsinvolved because uh, we we do these
research research projects and This is whatI call these research projects. I call
them here's the answer, what's thequestion. M Okay. I'm like,
(35:29):
I'm gonna give you the endgame andthen you're gonna go research, which he
did. Nineteen NHL debuts led theHL this year for a team with six
debuts, sorry, nineteen NHL callups, six NHL debuts. There's just
no way anybody's gonna top that.Nobody did thirteen more wins than last year,
more wins than anybody else. Steepthen text in because anytime we come
(35:52):
up with one of these things,I said it the group text that I
have with Steve Potman, Director ofHockey Operations, Jake Wagman, GM John
fur Or. She praised Bob Hoffmanof this what we've just come up with,
and that's Steve Texan. He says, did a team have more thirty
point scores than us and we weresecond? We were second. Coachella Valley
(36:14):
had the most at eleven and wewere at ten, tied with Springfield at
ten too. So that's that's theresearch projects. We're pretty good, Johnny,
We're pretty good at eyeballing something andbe like nobody had more than us
on that. Yeah, yeah,we just kind of knew. The long
part was just looking at every otherteam, and the longest was the NHL
(36:38):
call ups. That took me aboutgosh, maybe three days of just going
through every single team and looking atthe call ups, looking at the transaction
page on the AHL. And whatwas also getting confusing is because when play
a player gets traded in the AHL. We saw a big example Nick chi
(36:58):
Check he got traded from San Joseto Abbotsford. They technically get called up
to get traded and then sent backdown. So you had to put that
into consideration. You know, yes, it's a call up technically, but
it's not a call up for youknow, the how would you say it
just for for the player to bethere with NHL, right right, Yes,
(37:22):
So we excluded recalls for in purposeof trades, recalls and purpose of
contract termination because the players technically recalledand then put on NHL waivers because there's
no AHL waivers. And then ohgosh, there's another one that we excluded.
But yeah, there's just a coupleof things to exclude there, Oh,
(37:43):
conditioning loans to uh. So that'swhat it was also a bit confusing
because I went through the whole list, and we found out that wilks Bury
technically had more calls than us,But I'm like, this's just no way.
Did more research, found out theytraded some guys, they had another
player that was called up to beput on waivers. When you put those
those factors in there just right belowus, and then that's when we determined
(38:06):
that we had the most NHL collupsthis season. So it's a long project,
it was very much worth it.It was something we talked about the
whole entire season, like we gottabe the first, but there's just no
numbers. And now that we hadthe time, you know, might as
well look into it, and wedid, and uh yeah, it's a
big accomplishment for the team this seasonto have that many call ups and to
(38:27):
be one of the best in theleague. Unreal most call ups, most
debuts, most wins over last year, second most in players with thirty or
more points. If you have somethingyou want Johnny to research, yes,
please anything any touch with us onthe podcast and he'll check it out.
But a good job on on allof that stuff. And how about Steve
(38:49):
Pott and get involved? Yeah, what about what about Johnny on? Yeah,
let's get Johnny on that. Ofcourse, I don't think Steve those
you did it. I think hethinks, oh, I'm not saying look
right right, So thank goodness wedidn't get fact checked by Jake, John
Steve or Bop. Yeh see that'swhat I was. That's what Johnny I
(39:10):
was. That's what I was worriedabout, Like if you know, I
put something in and and again I'mdouble checking all of these research projects that
I'm doing, Like I'm triple checkingeverything to make sure I'm not wrong.
And that's what I'm fearing. Fearingis just uh, you know, someone
coming out and saying, well, you're wrong on that this happened. And
then I'm like, well, nowwe might either go into an argument or
(39:34):
not an argument, but you know, just to kind of debate on well
maybe this and this or at leastother teams too, other teams coming out
and saying nobody's no one's comet andwe had our fine print. We had
our fine print. Nobody was goingto be able to pick anything apart because
our fine print. Back to HunterDrew, he's known Peter Delibatory. Yeah,
(39:55):
they've known each other for a while, they've trained the off season.
This was not a blind roommate that. This was not a freshman year getting
paired with blank that you do notlike, not like zuber Donan Ratu.
Yeah, and they and they theythey've been together like Caddy's training camps,
right camps and rookie camps, Devoin the camps. But yeah, it
(40:15):
wasn't wasn't just a blind Uh.I guess Peter kind of needs a home.
Should we take him? Yeah,I guess bare bedroom. And then
it was like, hey, Pete, Pete, come on over here and
get in the car. So andalso too, again Peter's reluctant on doing
this on the show, but hishis wrapping that they talked about, his
(40:38):
rapid fire has to be just straightwrap. Hey Peter, let's because they
everyone who's told me, they say, you can give Peter a couple of
words, and he's just able todo it. So yeah, maybe in
st rapid Fire, we give hima couple of words from each of us
and just see if he can doit, if he wants to do it.
(40:58):
Maybe we got to ask him beforeor hand if he's willing to do
it, because I think it's amore personal thing for him. But I
just I want to see how goodhe is at doing it. What game
do you think the guys will decideto go to? For the Blue Jays
game? When when the Hunter andMaddie and Ryan McGregor, Curtis Douglas,
Travis Bear and the Godfrey guys inthe Toronto guys all come up, let's

of affect this play. You know, he's writing his own story right now,
and that's just what I respect aboutit. How about some former Roadrunners
in the NHL plaffs? By theway, we got that done without any
snaffoos. Hunter Drew would not believethat after Yeah, we did it,
(49:14):
We did it. There's a coupleof moments where I'm like, oh,
I'm next to wait where a weregoing? I have to keep going wait,
hold on. There was a coupleof moments where you give it out.
You gave out an ward. I'mlike, WT, what and then
but it was your turn again,So I didn't. I didn't have any
comment, no comment, good, good, regardless, good. But yeah,
(49:35):
former Roadrunners in playoffs right now.We saw last year Aiden Hill winning
the Stanley Cup with the Vegas GoldenKnights and came in in the second round.
Yeah, replacing replacing the goaltender spotfor Vegas last year the second round.
Calvin Pickard, who went three andoh with the Roadrunners in eighteen nineteen,
he was here on a conditioning assignmentfrom the Coyotes, comes in and
(50:00):
four for Edmonton and wins the game. I thought we might have another former
roadmanner coming in to pick things upone game four against Connor Garland. Uh.
Fan favorite with the road Runners whilehe was here. Uh he got
a big goal the other night,a little uh little g there. I'm
(50:24):
just a kind of a consistent twentygoal scorer in the National Hockey League.
We had him our first three seasons, and uh, I think I think
if you look at I don't wantto say Matt Rushmore so cliche, but
I think if you named five alltime Roadrunners, he would be be there.
Bunting Garland Hill pro's the tough likeyou could, uh three eight seasons.
(50:47):
I think, uh, Connor Garlandwould be would be up there.
Yeah, I'm thinking soon Michael Carconiis definitely Carconi one. Yeah, yeah,
I would. I would say, yeah, uh is the season and
he had, you know, scoringthe twenty one goals in the year.
He had one thing about one thingabout Connor Garland. He's from Situate,
Massachusetts. And you'll get to knowit all played by play guy who is
(51:12):
familiar with the region, right, because nobody knows how to say Situate,
Massachusetts unless you know Connor Garland oryou're from within fifteen miles of there.
Oh, Connor Garland from stituent,Massachusetts, and well he'll say like that
play by play guy. Oh oh, we'll drop in a situate Massachusetts.
Got to show that he knows howto say situate Massachusetts. You just have
to you have to Connorland from Situate, Massachusetts. Do you remember when Calvin
(51:37):
Pickard we played against him this earlierthis season? He started off as like
the he was like the best goaliethe first few games of the season.
Then he gets gets called up Jackplaying against Bakersfield or playing for Bakershield against
us, did not mention that,Yeah, yeah, and he he looked
good. And then that's when theydid the switch with Jack Campbell and Picker
never came back. And yeah,no, he's starting in playoff game.
(52:00):
So good for him. Always likethose good, those feel good stories of
any player. So we'll keep watchingthe the NHL playoffs, John and I'll
have a tracked. We'll maybe makeanother round of predictions coming up next week.
We'll just have to wait see sinceeverything went so smooth and in round
number two. But enjoying watching theplayoffs. We saw a couple of our
friends the other night, all ofour HL office officials over at Rudy Six's
(52:23):
Barbecue for our season end banquet, and Brett Ferres, sports editor from the
Air is in Dailey, Star WarunnersHappy Hour and James Kelly our Runners Rider.
We're there. It was awesome.Great to see those guys walked in.
Yeah, it was great see mostof the buffet catching up a little
bit talking about just what's what's everyonebeen up to since the season ended.
(52:45):
Everyone's doing good. We had theDallas Colorado game on Yeah, that was
that was a fun one. Arewe opening this up on Wednesdays? We're
inviting everybody in Tucson over to beon Bread on Wednesday. That's where we

pretzel bread and the sandwich, butwe all get our favor we all get
different things. So you get yourswith an apple. I get mine with
(53:05):
an apple because I'm healthy. Yes, yes, I get mine with a
You get yours with soup. Withsoup, it's a chili corn chowder that's
also like a part of the Wednesdayspecial. I think it's like a dollar
extra just to have it as theside. And then Cole our digital marketer,
he gets chips with it. Ithink gets chips. Yeah, that's
typically what people get chips. Yeah, I get the apple. You standing
(53:28):

whole because I'm going to have itfor a snack later on. There you
go. Oh, it's right there. It's all the table still over there.

wants to join us to beyond Breadon the patio on Wednesday, they have
misters and sometimes art shows. We'dlove love to have you, love to
have you app look for the guyswith the roadrunner Polo. Just look for
(53:50):
us. You'll be able to hearus in the parking lot. She parked
your car. We talked about yourhobby last week of building legos. Yes,
still working on the current one I'mworking on. And you put on
the outline this week a new hobbyfor me. Yeah, so you you
I I am the first one tosay I don't have a single hobby on
(54:10):
Earth. I just work and watchsports. So and this has been picked
up the last few weeks. Soagent, every you know, we're in
the office working. We're on thethird floor of a building. Yeah,
we're on the third floor building downtown. Every every hour or so, Adrian
likes to walk out, you know, chat with us a little bit,
just to you know, because it'sjust not quiet in the office all day.
(54:31):
We like to chat and stuff. But Agent always likes to look out
of a window between Cole and Iand he's always pointing out it's where people
are parked. Yeah, may makecomments about, yeah, there's a uh
that white sedan is in that loadingzone. That's been the big one.
That's been the big one with it'semergency flash song. We have a cheater
(54:51):
in our neighborhood. Uh, oldergentleman with gray hair of white sedan will
park his vehicle in the fifteen minutelow bating zone, turn on the flashers,
and he might disappear for a halfhour. He might disappear for the
day. And uh definitely takes advantageof the situation. And we have not
the right nobody's there right now.Agent likes to go out there watch everybody,
(55:15):
and I like to I like tojudge people parallel parking on the other
side. I will look over there, I'll look down into the five dollars
lot and make comments it's just thelooking on making it's it's honestly something that
I've given my parents just a ridiculoustime about. They will go to the
window in the front room and justlook at every neighbor, analyze every situation
(55:38):
going on, and it's it's sociopathic. And I've called you're just doing play.
For me, I'm like, they'redoing it. They have nothing else
to do but go out and lookat the neighbors and then talk about them
with the other neighbors. But forme, I'm just curious, what's what's
going on in the neighborhood. Isthere any situations we need and we have
a construction zone across the streets.Yes, yes, that's gonna be lots
(56:00):
of livity, lots of activity goingon there. But yeah, I like
to like to look out the windowand see what's uh, what's up in
the neighborhood. I like to callit Adrian's neighborhood Watch, adrians neighborhood Watch
of just Adrian. It just makesme I'm the small window. I'm the
block captain of Roadrunners neighborhood Watch, just checking on everything, making sure everything's
uh going smoothly. So if weuh if we ever get to the bottom
(56:22):
of this, uh this, Yougive this guy an and she takes a
mile and give a guy a fifteenminute loading zone to be a good neighbor,
parks his car there for hours onend with the flashes on. But
he puts the flashes on. Youknow, some days going to come out
his battery. He's going to bedead. Yeah, right, he's going
to come in and want us tohelp. One thing, and one thing
you joked a semi joked, isputting what a ring camera? Put a
(56:43):
ring ring camera on the on thethe pole the poll that has the sign
that literally says loading zone fifteen minutes. If you have a ring camera there,
you can go to the ring cameraapp turn it on and talk to
it like, heycuse me, whatyou do me? Yeah, what you're
doing. You're fifteen minutes. Yourfifteen minutes is up? Excuse me?
Or fifteen minutes is up? Excuseme, sir. You've been here four
(57:05):
hours and eighteen minutes, and wecharge every fifteen minutes. It was that
one day when it was parked andwe all left the office. We were
all gone, We're all gone leftat five o'clock. The car is still
there. Yeah, and it parkedout like three that day and we're like,
oh my gosh. Yeah, theleaving your flashes on like that will
kill your bat firteen minute loading zone. Insane. The battery health of that
white sedan is not good. Insane. It's shocked. He hasn't been caught
(57:29):
yet, but we'll see, we'llsee. We'll keep looking for you on
what street you're on in downtown Tuson, and how stringent the right we will
we will keep looking. We'll keepyou posted, everybody, and if we
need to break in with an emergencypodcast on this situation, you will breaking
news emergency podcast. In the meantime, have a great rest of your week,
and thanks for joining us on thisweek's podcast. What do We Throw
