the voice of the Roadrunners, AdrianDemi, what advice do you have for
me? Drink a lot of water. It's pretty odd. And your new
best friend my best friend, JonathanSchaeffer. The guys are already talking,
(00:21):
so let's join them right here onyour two Son Roadrunners Insider Podcast. Hey,
everybody, welcome to a condensed midweekemergency preview edition of your Two Son
Roadrunners Insider Podcast. Jonathan Shafers here, I'm Adrian, Jenny. We are
greeting you from our broadcast location atthe Tucson Arena, where we will bring
(00:44):
you all of the Roadrunners action thisseason. Johnny will be to my right.
I will be here in my usualspot if you want to envision the
podcast in your mind. So Iwe promised you we'd come back midweek.
Here we are, Johnny little rushed. I've got a bus to catch.
We are leaving for Las Vegas attwelve thirty. I have not packed,
(01:07):
I have not eaten. The radiogear is sitting right here, so we're
gonna fly through this, but wewere we were very good at underpromising and
over delivering here, so we're gonnakeep doing that. On this midweek edition
of the podcast because Johnny Brudwunder startedtraining camp since we last talked with folks
from FanFest, and we've got theCaddies preseason game coming up here Saturday,
(01:27):
so we wanted to greet everybody andget them ready for the weekend, go
over the roster and the game plan. Yeah, first off, shout out
to everyone there at FanFest, boththe fans and the people working it.
It was just a great atmosphere, great talking to the players and you know,
meeting the fans for the first timehere in Tucson. And Yeah,
(01:48):
training camp, it's been a prettychaotic weig not only for us, but
for you know, all the playersand coaches as well, getting ready for
this preseason matchup in Henderson. Andthen right around the corner of the very
next we have some Coyotes and AnaheimDucks preseason action here again at the Tucson
Arena, So pretty exciting for that. Yeah, and the Roadrunners training camp
roster that we're taking to Henderson. It's amazing. Seventeen players who were on
(02:14):
last year's roster. That is incrediblefor the first day of training camp.
Eight guys who have been here atleast three years and four guys who've been
here at least four years. Soa lot of players who have been here
as Roadrunners and know their coaches. You look at the coaches. Steve Potman
(02:37):
his seventh season, his third seasonas head coach, John Slaney his seventh
season as assistant coach, Jack Wagman, director of hockey Operations, his third
season. You look at Zach Startiniin his second season, but the training
room too, Eric Bectel eighth yearas the Roadrunners sad equipment manager, Jordan
Ellis in his sixth year with theteam and the head of playing trainer.
(02:59):
So a lot of familiar faces,a lot of continuity guys you're turning from
last year. Michael Lombardi, NathanSmith, Ryan McGregor, Micah Miller,
Milosh Kellerman, Ben McCartney, JanYunique, Travis Barron, Curtis Douglas,
Cameron Heebig, Reeseatelli, Colin Tyson, Josh done I can go on,
Michael Kesselring, Camkarate, Stephen Camper, lad Koya Chanik and Johnny. It's
(03:23):
not just those guys, it's guyswe've played against the Pacific Division. Matthew
Vilalta, goaltender fifty eight, thirtytwo and fourteen with Ontario. We saw
him. I was joking with himin the hallway the other day. I'm
like, yeah, I know whoyou are. We get fifty two shots
a night against you every time weplayed. Yeah, Ontario get twenty six
and did you'd stonewalls? And hesaid, well, I love playing at
(03:43):
the Tucson Arena. I like playingat this rink. He's excited to be
here. And boy, it's gonnabe a great combination with Ivan pros maataf
as it looks right now, rightwith Connor Ingram and Crell Mamelka, the
two Kitities goalies. Ivan still withthe Kittie so we could see him at
the preseason game coming up on Saturdayhere at Tucson when the Cauties take on
(04:04):
the Ducks. But boy, ifit is Ivan and Matt Walta, those
are those are two guys that aregonna work great together. They're they're gonna
They've got two similar outgoing personalities andwith Goltenate development coach Charlie Tavis. I
think it's gonna be a really reallygood fit in the in the goaltending department
here to start the year, andtwo son, if that's what we end
up with your old friend Montana andYabucci back on the blue line. So
(04:26):
in the last couple of years inSan Jose, Peter DILABATORI saw him a
number of times with with Henderson,John Leonard. You saw in San Jose.
You had him there, Johnny asyou join us from the from the
San Jose Barricud to Austin Paganski. We saw him with Kachella Vallet. Last
year, Hunter Drews played nineteen gamesagainst two Son of the last four seasons.
He's finished in the top five inthe AHL in penalty minutes each of
(04:48):
the last two seasons. And justinKirkland they call him Costco. We saw
him in Stockton, We saw himlast year in San Diego. Fourteen points
in seventeen games against the read soseventeen returning guys, eight guys in their
third year, four guys in theirfourth year. I forget Ivan, he'll
be that the longest tenured roadrunner inhis fifth year. And these guys for
(05:10):
around the division, Johnny that we'retalking about the seven that have appeared against
us, they all seem like pointygame guys and a really good goalie.
So it looks like a great rosterhere on week one a training camp for
the road Runners. Yeah, andyou know, Matthew Volalta, he's one
of the guys I'm most excited forbecause you know, in this kind of
league, you're playing a lot ofback to back games almost every week,
(05:31):
you know, a lot of Fridayand Saturday games or Saturday and Sunday,
vice versa. And it's really reallyimportant to have a really good goaltender duo.
And I think Prosata and Valta willbe really good in that back end.
I think Tucson will be putting ona lot of goals this year from
just the roster you told us.But again, got to have that defense,
got to be able to keep theseleads. And this team is looking
(05:54):
just really exciting from just on paperalone, from this you know, training
camp roster. You look at ithere and I've talked to a lot of
people as well. When I firsttold people I was going to Tucson,
they were really excited because a lotof people from even outside of the city
know that this team is really scary, and you know it's it's gonna be
great, it's gonna be exciting.Yeah. I mean, the Coyotes are
(06:15):
in a process here of building upfrom the draft through the American Hockey League.
And you look at guys that havebeen here, Ryan McGregor, Cam
Hebe, Cam Crowdy yan Yanik intheir fourth seasons with the Roadrunners and they
started here as rookies. And we'veseen the organization with with our coaches,
(06:35):
we've talked about just continue to grow. Last year, we got this group
into the playoffs, a group thatwas playing their depth goaltenders the last month
and a half and held off teamslike San Jose, San Diego and Henderson
to get to the get to thatpoint right with our depth goalies who were
(06:56):
in the ECHL. So these guysreally had to dig deep and find a
way and come together as a group, and they did it and we got
him into the playoffs. And thenthis year you look at the third year
guys like Ben McCartney and vlad KoyaShaanik joining joining Tucson back on the back
end, and Colin Tyson and histhird year with the Roadrunners and Travis Barron
(07:18):
and his third year with two sonas well, and it's it's a it's
a stacked group that we're really excitedabout, but it's just fun to watch
the process of two years ago.We were young, we played hard every
night, we'd get to the thirdperiod, we'd go short hit. The
(07:39):
little plays were what we quite couldn'tfinish. We were playing hard every night,
we were in every game. Lastyear took that next step, got
into the playoffs, found a waywhere two years ago we were young,
we were fun to watch. Findingthe way was the hard part. And
now this year you've got the seventeenattorneys, the eight third year guys,
the four to fourth year guy,Ivan if he's a fifth year guy,
(08:01):
and adding seven huge pieces from around. Depth is a is a big thing.
Andre Turney, head coach of theCoyote, saying, in the last
couple of days, he's like,we're at a different stage in our rebuild
right now. We're we're deeper andyou're seeing it down here in Tucson with
the Roadrunners, and Tucson started thatstarted the year, I think with a
good roster two years in and remembertwo years ago in Stockton, we won
(08:24):
one nothing against the team that wentonto the Western Conference Finals opening night ivan
the shutout La Koya Chic the goalin overtime, and I thought, this
is us, this is what weleft off in twenty nineteen, twenty twenty
when the COVID pause happened. Wego into twenty twenty one, We've got
eight guys who would be here upin the bubble as a taxi squad members
(08:45):
and we were a young group withnot a lot of depth, and again
played hard, always fun to watch, but didn't quite didn't quite have you
know, all that all that youneeded to push through, and then you
really you get your guys, youget your roster. The twenty one to
twenty two season we started off withthe roster and then that was it.
(09:05):
That the two games in stocks andDyson Mayo goes up and all of a
sudden, the Coyotes undergoing injuries,we had guys get called up and we
were a getting putting it together onthe fly. Last year not as much
and more experience getting into the playoffs. But this year you've got the depth.
We've had good opening eight rosters thelast two years. This year we've
(09:26):
got one, but we also havedepth for when those call ups do come
to the Coyotes. Yeah, andit's bound to happen in every single UH
program, in every single league thatyou know, guys are gonna go down,
Guys are gonna underperform and lose theirspots, Guys will get called up,
sent down, you know again, injured, and it's really important to
have that depth not only on theArizona Coyotes, but also the two Sun
(09:50):
road Runners and then their EHL affiliate. If who who's el EHL. It's
it's by committee, by committe.Yeah, okay, guy, No,
it rotates around a bit so,but yeah, it's important to have that
depth. And of course this clubthis season for Tucson again lots of returning
(10:11):
guys and you know, sure thereturning guys might not be full veterans.
You know, they're they're going tobe around the twenty five to twenty six
range, but in this kind ofleague that you're you know, almost a
veteran, and then those guys willget caught up and then they'll be the
new guys you know in Arizona whohaven't had much of the NHL experience.
But yeah, just Adrian. Goingback to all of it, this team
is full of depth. And itis kind of a bummer when you say
(10:33):
that too, because some guys whodeserve to be on the you know,
the NHL roster, or who deserveto be on the AH old roster,
who are down in the lower level. Is because there's too many guys on
this team. There's too much talent. But you know, you look at
it and you can say, well, the guys are just going to be
playing harder for their own roster spotsand again it will just make the whole
(10:56):
team better throughout the season. Yeah, and then it's it's it's gonna be
fun, and you've you've been aroundthe guys, and we're gonna hear from
him coming up here on the podcast. We've got all sorts of players to
hear from. We're gonna hear fromyou guys, Matt Malalta, John Leonard,
Austin Paganski and then Josh Dodin,Nathan Smith and yan Ya nieue Is.
As we keep going here on ahard Out for the Bus podcast,
(11:20):
Johnny, We're we're gonna make thisas quick as we can. We're gonna
be efficient here on the Midweek podcast. We promised you unveiling our training camp
roster before we had to Henderson. But but Johnny, it's it's been a
busy week. FanFest on Sunday thepodcast Hunter Drew we had Calling Tyson there
and then you went out to thetwo some Botanical Gardens with Reesptelli, Micah
Miller and and uh got some funstuff going there with a good volunteer project.
(11:45):
After day one training camp. Itwas day one in the community.
Yeah, it was a lot ofheavy lifting. We were basically setting up
the Christmas trees. Well there arebig metal Christmas trees. We're setting them
up for the for the Christmas timeat the Potanical Gardens. I'm not sure
what they call it exactly, butthere'll be you know, a lot of
lights on you know holiday atmosphere. We have a similar thing back where I'm
(12:07):
from in Riversite called the Festival ofLights Garland is that what? I don't
know what it's, I just knowin my hometown we do something called the
Festival of Lights where we call thelights in our downtown. It's really beautiful.
So yeah, it was fun gettingthat all set up, but it
wasn't too hot of a day.I wish I knew that I was going
to be doing heavy lifting near dirtbecause I was in my dress shoes and
(12:28):
polo and you know, slack,so I got those a little dirty.
But this is, yeah, thisis hockey in the desert. I'm still
trying to get used to that motto, you know, not being from the
desert at all. But yeah,it was really fun. You know,
the guys had a great time doingit, and uh, you know,
the Potanical Gardens was also really beautiful. Got to walk around and check it
out a bit. I didn't evenknow Tucson had a botanical gardens until you
(12:50):
told me that I was going tobe attending there. I didn't either.
Yeah, that's it's awesome. It'shalfway between my drive to the UH to
the arena for my Yeah, it'slike on the way. Yeah, you
know, I might have even drivenby it a few times, which I
just didn't. It was just kindof hit and you. When I was
navigating there, it was like, well, what do I turn right now?
And then you turn in and thenthen there's the parking lot, you
(13:11):
know, covered with all the treesand it was a good crowd, a
lot of people there I even sawsomeone with a Tucson Roadrunners shirt and she
knows the players and like start takingseven wanted to chat with them and stuff.
So yeah, that was nice, you know, seeing a fan and
them getting to see some players dosome volunteer work for the community. But
yeah, it was It was reallyfun and a chance for you to get
to meet Reese Patelli and Micah Millerand then our other goalie, Reid Cooper
(13:37):
for the first time. Yeah, you know, I got to drive them.
We had to take two separate cars. Mikeal Miller he was in my
car. We we mainly talked aboutMinnesota sports because he's from Grand Rapids.
He's a huge Vikings fan, Twinsfan who just won their first playoffs series
I think since two thousand and four, if I'm not mistaken. So congratulations
(14:00):
to the Minnesota Twins and of coursethe Wild as well. He used to
uh watch as a kid. Butyeah, great talking to him, Reese
Vitelli and Rie Cooper great guys totalk to as well. And yeah,
it was just it was fun.It was fun helping out and I haven't
really done volunteer work like that ina long time. I think since high
school when I did a park cleanup. So yeah, I was just good
(14:22):
to get out there for the community. Yeah, and happy to get the
guys out into Tucson on day one, and then we sent another couple of
groups out to the desert to shootUH to shoot our U This is Hockey
in the Desert commercial spot and anopening video. Travis Barron, Steven Camper
and his dog were out there.Oh yeah, he asked if he can
bring his dog. We're out therein the desert. On on Tuesday,
(14:43):
after practice with cam Kroatey and thenfor the night cap sunset in the Kachinas,
Brian McGregor and Curtis Douglas went outand then Wednesday, a really fun
event is we want to introduce theguys to Tucson. Wanna want to tell
them about our home and and whileit's their home and you know it's this
(15:05):
is not a strip mall community whereyou're you go to Raisin Canes and Chick
fil A and Chipotle and that's yourrotation. Like we've we've got one of
the best culinary cities in the world. We've got all the outdoors with Sapino
Canyon and Mount Lemon and and uhall all Catalina Mountains State Park, and
you know, you know, youlook at the West Side and Star Pass
(15:28):
and and Gates Mountain and and andjust you can go on and on the
Rincones and Soarrow National Park, andyou know it's a special place. So
we we wanted to tell the guysall about it, and in the event
that maybe there's something they didn't know, we're an hour from Mexico. You
can go down to Mexico. Sowe had we had a welcome to Tucson
lunch on Wednesday at Reforma, whichis one of our favorite spots. Kim
(15:48):
Cateroblos and I hosted and and presentedto the to the players after and they're
like, how did you guys findthis place? This is unbelievable. So
we we we took them up toSaint Fellows Plaza where Union Public House is
a great sports bar. Proof Pizzais an option for them when they're looking
for a good place to go,and of course pointing out that our friends
it's a union. Reform and ProofPizza also own the Maverick Country Bar on
(16:12):
Tanka Verde, which which lit upsome some eyes and was familiar to some
of the guys. So that's that'swhat we've done so far. And a
quick practice today on this Thursday, and then we are going to board the
bus and head to Henderson for preseasonaction that you'll hear on Fox Sports fourteen
fifty and the iHeartRadio app coming upon Friday night. It's a six pm
(16:33):
start, so six pmners warm upon Tucson Sports Station. Jonathan Schaeffer beginning
your coverage as usual with Red Winner'swarm up and then Johnny, we are
going to come right back after thegame and see everybody for Coyotes preseason action
coming up on Saturday at three hereat two Son Arena. Can't wait,
can't wait. It's going to beawesome and hopefully everyone can make make the
(17:00):
wherever you're from in Tucson can makethe short trip and watch some preseason action.
Yeah, and the Coyotes and Ducksthe last preseason game, and the
Roadrunners, I've never seen it before, have pretty much their entire roster.
They're going to start the year withhead it on day one and training camp
and with the with the Coyotes,a longer camp with the Australia trip,
and and you know, several groupsand and for them, it gives them
(17:22):
the week to practice with the teamthat they're going to take in New Jersey
for opening night next week. Andand for the Roadrunners, gives them a
head start because I've never seen dayone a training camp be Rosters Tucson started
with. It's gonna be another hugebenefit for the club and pretty exciting.
Yeah, and especially that, youknow, all the guys are getting to
know each other and they're you know, practicing out there, and of course
(17:44):
now they're playing. I mean they'vebeen playing preseason games before, but now
they're playing their first live game asa two sun road Runner, you know.
And our new guys that they're goingto be their first times in a
twoson Roadrunners jersey, including Matthew Velozza. I think that's one of the things
he pointed out. Also, hehas sick pads by the way, VILLELTA.
Have you seen that with the withthe cactus I got. We gotta
(18:06):
get him on the show and askhim how he got those because just a
six setup. But yeah, goingback to it, lots of guys this
is gonna be the first time withthe Roadrunner on their on their you know,
jersey plates or in the front, and a lot of them are excited
to get going. And you know, it's even though hockey has one of
the shortest off seasons of any's prosport, it always feels long. It
(18:27):
just always feels long. Yeah, yeah, and we're ready to go.
And then Matt was a fun guy. We liked Uh. We like talking
to him. We're gonna hear fromhim coming up on the podcast. We'll
hear from him more coming up thisweek. In fact, uh, I
want to hear from uh Matt rightnow on just his his training camp experience.
(18:47):
So far, it's been great,Mama's seats, my first time kind
of getting to check out the citytoo soon, and you know, coming
here to the TCC and seeing thisside of the rink, so obviously you've
been here a couple of times playinggames on the other side, but definitely
been a pleasure to you know,be here now with the road Runners and
just trying to get better every dayand get ready for opening night and doing
all the work I can with Charlieand you know the rest of the boys.
(19:08):
So it's been spent fantastic so far. And we could already already tell
you know, we like all ourguys. We we like Matt. Yeah.
Yeah, he was really easy totalk to. You know, usually
when it comes to goaltenders, theylike to be a little a little bit
more quiet, you know, whichmakes sense because you know, just wait
till you meet Ivan. Oh yeah, I've not met him yet. Yeah.
It's whenever I see a goaltender andI'm not saying he's a chatterbox or
(19:32):
anything, but when they're more expressive, and you know they're they they're more
personal when you talk to it's alittle bit surprising because I think being a
goaltender is such a mental game becauseso much pressure is on you. I
mean, you're you're the last lineof defense is what they call it.
And it's good to have vocal goaltenders, you know. It's more chemistry with
the teammates because they're just as importantto the offense as any player out there
on the ice. So yeah, great to talk to. And yeah,
(19:55):
I would love to give him onthis podcast soon. And I gotta ask
him how he got those pads.We will get Maddie. Absolutely. You
caught up with John Leonard as well. Yeah, John Leonard, he was
a Barracuda My first time with SanJose and then he played with Milwaukee last
season. Also really talented guy andexcited to have on this roster. I
(20:15):
think he's going to contribute a lotto this season. Yeah, John Leonard
playing against the Roadrunners with with Milwaukeeand San Jose has always been one of
those guys we knew was going tobe trouble. Ten points and nine games
against the road Runners with Milwaukee andSan Jose, sixty four NHL games with
San Jose and Nashville. Let's hearfrom John right now on playing for his
(20:37):
new organization here in Arizona. Itshould be fun. You know, I've
played here in this rink before, and you know, it's always fun to
go to Arizona. And obviously theweather is a lot better than you know,
a lot of places, so that'sa big plus. And the guys
have been awesome and it's a reallytight knit group here, and you know
it's only been a few days. It's gonna be a fun year. And
then Austin Paganski. We saw himlast year Coachella Valley saw a lot of
(21:02):
him, went to the finals asa member of the Firebirds. Was in
seventy of the seventy two regular seasongames here in twenty four, their twenty
six playoff games, twenty two NHLgames with Winnipeg and Saint Louis, and
a good last second edition Austin Paganski'salways an exciting time when the year to
good games going. You worked sohard throughout the summer with training and skating,
and to finally put into a gamewill be fun. Yeah, He'll
be a guy with you know, plenty of playoff experience. You know,
(21:25):
he was one goal away from youknow, hoisting that Collar Cup with Coachella,
and you know, coming from areally talented group out there in the
Palm Desert. Again, another guythat the Roadrunners were able to pick up
and is going to be playing alot to the success of this team in
twenty twenty three. Let's hear fromsome guys that we know really well,
(21:45):
and let's talk about our favorite subject, Arizona with one of our favorites,
Josh Done. Heard him on theradio in Tucson yesterday afternoon, went on
with our good friend David Kelly andJosh always a great interview, and we
talked to him earlier. Johnny caughtup with him last week at ICE in
Scottsdale. At Coyte's training camp, just on life in Arizona. Yeah.
(22:06):
I think one of the things isit's my first time down in Tucson,
and it's funny being from Arizona,I haven't really been around all of Arizona
yet, So getting to go downin Tucson and seeing what it's like and
seeing the mountains down there and gettingto know some of the people down there,
it's definitely something different and unique, and it's its own little version of
Arizona down there. It's pretty special. Man. You look at Josh and
(22:26):
it's always unfair to compare somebody toa family member or his dad or right,
but Josh Shane just is so manygreat characteristics and Josh has every single
one of them, and he's hisown unique character and he's a really,
really talented hockey player. Looking lookingforward to some huge stuff from Josh hat
(22:47):
trick and the preseason game in SaintLouis that that Kim and Dusty were at
and always always a hero here inthe Grand Canyon State, and we've known
for years. You see it correlatehow close these Roadrunners teams are and the
Coyote, these teams with their culture. Andre Turani, the Family, the
Brotherhood, and Steve Potman as well. Down here with the road Runners.
Here's Nathan Smith coming back for ayear number two. On this tight knit
(23:10):
group. Well, it's awesome. It's we got a tight knit group here
on the Coyotes and the Roadrunners, and like you said, we kind of
meshed pretty well. And you know, I'm friends with several guys on the
on the Coyotes two and pretty closewith them. So and we're we're not
far away either. It's only likean hour drive or hour and a half
whatever it is. But you know, it's pretty pretty close and it's nice
to be that close to each otherand find the one we got for you.
(23:32):
Jan Yunique Johnny talking about the preseasonaction coming up here Saturday at three.
We will be back from Henderson.Everybody's asking if we'll be back from
you think we're gonna miss this. We're playing the game. We're coming back
to Arizona for a couple more daysand then the season will open in Texas.
But yeah, we're coming back.Yan Yanique catching up with Johnny earlier
on this preseason game in two soon. Yeah, it's definitely exciting, you
(23:56):
know, Home advantage for us guysthat played there a couple of years,
so what was exciting to be backwith our hands in our facility. So
there we go. Heard from sixbig guys. We'll hear from the more
throughout the weekend. Is the RedRudders take to the doll Alone Center to
take on the Henderson Silver Knights. But we wanted to we wanted to come
back, Johnny. We promised folksa midweek special edition emergency training camp preview.
(24:18):
Looking at the roster like what wesee, and uh, I think
we did our job. And Adrian, you're definitely going to be the first
guy in the building on Saturday.I will be the I guarantee you will,
first of all, because I've gotto walk through the building to get
out of here when we get back, so that kind of cheating. Then
I will be back, fully suitedup and all ready to go for Coyotes
(24:41):
Ducks preseason action Saturday at three.Yeah, just getting closer. You know,
I've never been so excited for preseasongame. And then you know,
once that's over, you know, almost a week away from first regular season
puck drop in Texas, and youknow that's we will get underway. How
about we take a lazy Sunday offand we'll be back with the folks on
(25:02):
Monday with our next podcast. OhI'm I'm for that all right, We'll
be back Monday. Folks will takeyou out today with Roadrunners Rock. Enjoy
the preseason action from Henderson. Seeyou here at the preseason game against the
Ducks with the Coyotes on Saturday, and have a crank breath of your feet.
Don't come after one of our house. You cann't need a lot more
(25:22):
friends. We've seen us gape before. We know how this story ends.
Tonight. Were rising up tonight togo us down. You try to run
up on us, We're gonna runyou down. Get all the bus,
go back to where it came from. Getting on the bus and drop five
(25:45):
file away, Hang up your gates, drop your gloves, but just tas
away. You got beat down tonight. That's the desa way Runners Brogota from
Robota from Robot a Frock. Ithink to say m
