Speaker 1 (00:00):
When you want more Roadrunners, We've got more road Runners.
This is the Twoson Roadrunners Insider Podcast with a voice
of the Roadrunners, Jonathan Shafer.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
What advice do you have for me?
Speaker 3 (00:12):
You drink a lot of water. It's pretty odd.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
And your new best friend, my best friend, Arizona Daily
Stars James Kelly. The guys are already talking, so let's
join up right here on your two Son Roadrunners Insider Podcast.
Speaker 4 (00:27):
Welcome to this week's edition of the two Sun Roadrunners
Insider Podcast. Jonathan Shafer here with Arizona Daily Stars James Kelly.
We have a lot to talk about. Last two games
against the San Jose Barricuda going as well as you
can think. We take the split series, snapping the eight
game losing skid, Sammy Walker's trade coming to the Roadrunners
(00:50):
making a splash in his debut.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
We also have an interview with Maverick Lambrue.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
Super Bowl is over, the football season is done, looking
towards baseball season, of course, the hockey season still underway.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Four nations face off coming up.
Speaker 4 (01:06):
We have a big, big reassignment for us as well,
So yeah, lots to talk about, James. Yeah, the Roadrunners
take the split I think we'll take the split right.
We snapped the the eight game slide. We had the
breaking news of the Sammy Walker trade in our last show,
and boy did the show out on that Friday four
(01:28):
to three victory, contributing to all four goals four points
in his Roadrunners debut. He's now the only Roadrunner to
get four points in a game this season.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
It was a back and forth game.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
It was a game that we even trailed for a
bit as well, and we were able to just kind
of claw back another multiple goal comeback for us, and
we eventually won the game four to three, and it
was just a huge sigh of relief in the locker room,
and you really can tell the players were really ecstatic
to get at victory. And yeah, we lost the next game,
(02:02):
but you know, San Jose has the best winning percentage
at home in the AHL, so to at least get
one is big. They didn't win, or they didn't lose
a game in regulation at home since January fourth until
we beat them in regulation, so that series was not
going to be easy by any means. San Jose is
a very young and fast team. We scored four on
(02:24):
Joslav ask Grov, a American Hockey League All Star goaltender,
and yeah, we take the split and we move on
to a crucial game in Bakersfield.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
Yeah. I think that regardless of the circumstances of the season,
where if you're early in season or late in season,
you're on an a game winning stick, you're an eight
game and losing chick whatever, You'll take that split. At
San Jose concidering where they're understandings considering how good they
are known, but especially now when they had the a
game winless run, Honestly, I kind of felt like mentally,
(02:56):
Macha Mina kind of felt like, oh it was over,
you know, because they had such a ending to the
regulation in their last game of the before the all
start break. But to actually end it like that and
end and to to impress a fashion like that, because
you know, oftentimes I think that when you have a
team that you have a lot of you're long losing
streak and you end it. A lot of times you
(03:17):
do it you score like eight goals or something against
the team and you just blow them out, you know,
or you score a bunch of touchdowns gonna or a
bunch of runs or something against the team. You kind
of catch them when they're off guard or you know,
they haven't been night or something. But Samose played really well.
They played really lot the whole series, and they had
to earn that those two points on Friday, and it
was an impressive win, you know, and obviously a great
(03:38):
debut for for Sammy Walker. He he had good stats
last couple of years, but this year his his PET
points have been dropping a bit. And this is the
first time I'm going into that game. He had scored
two goals the whole season. So it's obviously great to
score two goals, to get to to to assist, to
get four points that have had every goal. So if
(03:58):
if you look at the stats from twenty twenty twenty three,
he had forty eight points at forty five games, and
at last year he had forty five points and seventy
seventy games and then so he was kind of down
a little bit. I guess that's why, uh, the wild
Uh we're willing to trade it. But his loss I
was lost last Minisoda's losses the road orders game because
(04:19):
he came out and had a great game, showed, uh,
you showed the Wilds. But both in Minnesota and Iowa,
that they maybe it was a great, great idea to
trade him or at least, you know, he showed these
great uh he could play well, he could add a
great debut and it was really good, uh, really good
opening started the series for the road Owners. And on
(04:41):
Friday they get to split our Saturday, Saturday afternoon they
get split and that you know, there's two upty. That
goal is kind of weird, weird adding to the game.
But for the for pretty much most of the game,
it was a one goal. Uh, it was a old
goal game. So it was really close game, really well
fought game, and really well fought series that it looks
like the road Owners are you know, I are kind
of under the weather. It looks like they're there that
(05:01):
kind of cold where they're that lose streak, but you know,
we're at the end of the cold and you're kind
of it's kind of legering a little bit. So I
felt like they were kind of at that point where
they're playing Ontario last year, last last week. But now
it seems like they're cleally over and they're back to
play normal. It seems like to me they're back to
a full strike that I feel in terms of personal
but in terms of how they're playing, in terms of
(05:22):
how I feel like they're kind of back there, back
to where they should be, back through where they should
be in terms of tel ed, they're they're past that
losing streak and everything I think.
Speaker 4 (05:30):
Yeah, especially how they won the Friday night game. Right,
they were down by two goals in the second period.
We had a scoreless first frame, down by two goals.
You know, we knew we were playing askarof and it's
just rare when you see a good goaltender playing like
that coming off of an All Star appearance, and we
just weren't able to solve them yet. And it's like, man,
(05:51):
this is gonna be a tough one to climb back from.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
And then we just started drawing the penalties, right, and
then we we score one. Robbie Russo gets his first
goal the twenty four to twenty five season, and then
we draw another penalty, and then Sammy Walker scores his
first goal as a Roadrunner just thirty seconds later, and
then now all of a sudden, we're tied at two apiece.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Third period starts.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
We score sixteen seconds into the period, the fastest goal
to start off a period this season. Overall, if you
want to count the entire time, it was three goals
in a three minute and seven second span to take
a three two lead. San Jose will tie it again,
so you know that game was not all the way
finished for two soon and then Walker scored the game
(06:33):
winner with a nice assist from Chris Douglas after the
Roadrunners killed off a big penalty, and then we win
the game four to three.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
Fast forward to the next day. Again, this wasn't a
night game.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
It was an afternoon game at two pm, so less
than twenty four hours the road Runs in Kuda were
back at Texau playing their next matchup. Kuda once again
took a one nothing lead. Roadruns did tie it, but
then the Kuda just they're young, fast team and I
think they're just too quick for Tucson in this matchup
because he just the Roadrunners just couldn't pull away from
(07:04):
San Jose. Like anytime Tucson scored a goal, San Jose
would respond back, and that's what they did. And then
they respond back again with a with a goal from Gushtin.
We tied it again with the goal from Cameron hebig
Is seventeenth of the season. San Jose would take back
the three to two lead. They almost took a four
to two lead. Dan off the third pier because Gustin
(07:25):
thought he had a hat trick. It went off of
the pipe and reviewed it wasn't in, and then the
Roadrunners trailed three two for the rest of the game
and San Jose just clamped down. Twocson in the third
period got two empty netter goals. Leydenmore scored the final
goal of the game with just a few seconds remaining,
so he has a nice quiet multiple point game for himself.
(07:47):
Pardon Cameron, Hebig now at seventeen goals on the season,
just one point away from matching his season high in
total points from last year as well, and Igor Soak
Love a nice little four game point streak for himself
as well, as he scored his fifteenth goal of the season.
Hunter Drew gets back on the score sheet as well,
(08:07):
Lambru and Zueber also adding assists for the games. It
was Lambru's first point in his last five so again
there's there's still always lots of positives.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
And yeah, James, he had a good point.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
Even though we lost on Saturday, we snapped an eight
game losing streak. You can really tell the Roadrunners are
playing with an upbeat tempo just a bit more and
they're still the team is still very much alive. Obviously,
we're starting to scoreboard watch Bakersfield a lot, you know,
and now down this stretch. And unfortunately, Bakersfield swept Chicago,
(08:42):
so they got two are part and four crucial points.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
So they're four points ahead of Tucson right now.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
So you're hoping that the Tuesday game tomorrow night would
be for the seventh place spot. It's not going to,
but the Roadrunners still have a very big opportunity to
get two points and prevent Bakersfield from getting any.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
Yeah, it's Runners still has twenty nine games left, but
we're getting the point, especially when you're in a long
road trip like this, we want to get as many
points as possible get get not only back into the
play position, but get back into the possibility of hosting again.
So you know, big, big, obviously big series coming up
with big Series, have a big single game, big single
(09:23):
game coming up against Bakersfield where they don't have the
chance to catch them on Tuesday, but they do have
the opportunity to get take some points away from not
take some points away but get points. And as sure
that Bakersfield plays a game, they don't get points. You know,
you don't mean where you win a regulation, bring you
two points and Bakersfield get zero. But also one of
the I want to talk about the going back to
(09:46):
the Friday game, that the goaltending. We talked about your slave,
but he was really he was one of the great
goalies in the one of the goals that really shined
in the All Star Challenge, in the All Star Tournament
and then the Skills competition too. So having the road
Owners beat him, it was really impressive to me. And
the other thing that we should talk about is that
(10:07):
Jackson's Auber had a good game. He had twenty six
saves and he's coming off. He had a he had
a rough let's be once. He had a rough Homestown
last time around where he gave up. He gave up
I think it was like six goals whatever. He got
lit up against Henderson, and then he had a tough
outing against Attmitsford. It was it was so tough that
I thought they might actually have the second period he
(10:27):
gave a much of goals. I thought they might actually
pull him going the third period. They didn't and he
woved up and I played a lot better in the third.
I've got a lot of staves. And but then flash
forward to the last week when they had that kind
of I think they kind of felt that they had
it was it was a must win game when they're
playing against the second game against the Rain, instead of
alternating having both both goalies play in that series, they
(10:49):
had Matt Walto played past Saturday too. Ultimately, they didn't
get the the win that they only got a point,
but they did it. They did show well and they
did do well. But uh, the situation where I think
you would kind of have a especially in the h L,
you'd have a situation where you alternate goals because you
want to have it where it's not two weeks between games.
For almost two weeks, we end up being we end
(11:09):
up playing in the first game of the Santo was
a series, so it wasn't full two weeks. But you
didn't want a situation where he didn't play that much,
especially because he played well in the NHL obviously, but
one of the top rookies in the league. But there's
a lot of times where he didn't play because you know,
because he's a rookie, and they're not They won't put
it for the playing as much. So there's a lot
(11:30):
of times where he didn't play. So you obviously wanted
them play as much as possible, but in a normal situation.
But I felt like they kind of had that. They
felt like they really wanted to get that win. But
they come back and Jackson gets to win on on Friday,
and it gets kind of off the side. I think
he looked good. He did let in some goals, but again,
it was it was a good downing and nice to
get off the for him to get off the for
(11:50):
the Runners, not only to end their loser streak, for
him to to get back to get back to his
winning ways, to get back to playing well.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (11:58):
I talked to Jackson Stobber after that victory, and once
we won, I saw Stobber kind of just look up and,
you know, just take a big sigh of relief, you know.
And it's not because it's like, oh my gosh, we
should have lost that game. I think it was just
more of like like wow, like what an effort by us,
Like we were down by two goals. Things were going
our way once again, and we were able to storm
(12:20):
back and win, and yeah, I was. I asked Ober,
you know, hey, sometimes you know, some bounces don't go
your way. You know, sometimes you let in a goal.
Maybe you didn't want to allow in, but you locked
in at the end and you made the saves that
you had to make to help us win. And that's
just how sometimes games go for a goaltender. And you know,
he said, yeah, that's all that matters, as long as
(12:41):
you get the win.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
H It was big for our group. Played two good games.
Speaker 4 (12:45):
And honestly, James, like all these games, a lot of
them have been one score in this you know, in
this stretch and that eight game losing skid, right, you know,
I had a four to one lead against the Henderson
Silver Knights and they stormed all the way back and
one in an overtime. Second game, we were three to
three in the first period and then Henderson ran away
(13:07):
with that matchup as well. Abbots Ford tied at to
apiece going into the final stages of third period, and
then Abbotsford scored, which is about de lessed them.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
In the remaining second.
Speaker 4 (13:18):
Game, we had a lead and then we kind of
fell apart, and then the Ontario series, we're down by
two goals, just needed one more to tie. It just
couldn't get there as well. And then we overcame the
multiple goal comeback to force the shootout. And even the
two games prior to coming home for that six game
homestand the two matchups against the Calgary Wranglers that started
(13:39):
the eight game slide, I mean, those games were well
within reach two. So it's not like the road runs
have been getting blown out. And in all these games
they've been close, they just haven't been able to find
that final you know, that final shift or that final
shot to make it.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
And you know, again that's that's tough.
Speaker 4 (13:57):
I mean, like I remember last season, San Diego was,
you know, one of the teams that didn't make the playoffs,
but their one gold game record was was it was
not good because they lost so many one goal games
and not saying ours is bad, but you start to
look down the stretch and say, like, man, we could
we could have gone that one, We should have had
(14:18):
that one, that one should have been a win too,
and yeah, and this is a this is make or
break time for two. So we just start finding ways
to win those one goal games because you know, by
the time the season ends and you're either in playoffs
or you're not. And you're gonna look back at a
lot of those matchups that were extremely close, saying, if
we just would have gone that one, or if we
(14:39):
would have made that final save or that final shot,
we'd be in the playoffs instead of nine the playoffs.
So yeah, big game coming up against Bakersfield coming tomorrow.
That's a game that the Roadrunners, you feel like, you
just they need to win it, you know, just need
to make Bakersfield lose one regulation, need to stop their
momentum because especially you have an Ontario rain the very
(14:59):
next day. So it's a lot more travel uh coming
up for Tucson before they head to Henderson to take
this take on the Silver Nights.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
Yeah, it's an interesting schedule because it's something that when
I look at the teams when in the Eastern Conference,
when they're playing like especially in Atlantic, where they'll play
like a scratched Wilksbury one night and the next night
they'll play in the High Valley. But that's it's kind
of weird. But then this is what their Runners have
this uh this week. So it's an interesting schedule for
them because usually they play two games or in California,
(15:27):
maybe they might have traveled there or something. But they
have this back to back night, so that's interesting for them,
and it's an opportunity. You do always talk about the
opportunity to go and get points, to go and pick
off not pick off, but you know, takes some get
deal some damage to teams ahead of them the standards,
and it's really you know, kind of get revenge after
not against Bakersfield obviously, but you know, you look at
(15:49):
the you look at the schedule they have, then you
go back to you know, obviously they have that Tuesday
gave me a Spakersfield and then they got swept by
the rain obviously, so they have the opportunity to get
that revenge. And then after that come up this weekend,
they have a couple of games at Henderson, so they
have an opportunity to get back at Henderson after they
swept them in the Royal Streets and Hometown. So it's
a really really great opportunity for the Runners to kind
(16:13):
of show their back and to kind of show that
that that kind of hiccup they had, that kind of
struggle they had in that a game when the streak
was kind of behind.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
Them, yeah.
Speaker 4 (16:23):
You know, once you get one, right, all you need is,
uh is another and eventually you start seeing more of
the wins of the losses, and it's a it's a marathon,
not a spirit.
Speaker 2 (16:33):
Right.
Speaker 4 (16:33):
So you know, all because the Roadrunners lost their other
game on Saturday, doesn't mean they're just going to go
back on another eight game losing streak. You don't just
you don't just end up losing streak and all of
a sudden win five in a row. You know, you
might need to lose one in between that to really
get back to the swing of things. So again, it
doesn't get any easier for two soon. It really doesn't
for the rests as a season, right, you know, you
(16:55):
have the biggest for Condos w about points in their
last six games there in their fine, they're in the
final playoff spot right now, so they're trying to hang
on to that. We know how the season Seria with
Ontario has gone. We haven't beaten them yet this season.
We have a point against him because we had that
amazing three goal comeback in the third period last week.
(17:15):
But uh, you know that's that's a game that's uh
that's important too. Then you have the silver Knights, who
are playing really good hockey as of recent they're eight
and two in our last ten games, are on a
three game winning streak as well, so it doesn't get
any easier. And then you have to control Valley Firebirds
at Actor Sure Arena. So, uh, you know the road
trip that we said as probably one of the most
(17:35):
important stretches for the Roadrunners, this might be the most
important jump Show trip ever maybe for the Roadrunners to
try to get back into the playoff picture and to
take the one to one split. And San Jose is
is fine, We'll take it. Both games were good. San
Jose's a really hard team to be it at home
and uh, yeah, well we'll just keep her going.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
We'll move on.
Speaker 4 (17:54):
And yeah, I'd like to play for both Jackson Stauber
and Matthew Valalta. Even though Valta suffered the loss, has
it won a game and quite some time. So trying
to get to win number one hundred and you still
had a pretty solid game for Tucson, trying to keep
a minute as long as possible, made thirty five saves
on thirty eight total shots you mentioned earlier. Stoburd twenty
(18:17):
six saves on twenty nine shots. So to see the
goaltenders slowly and maturely start to you know, get their
fastball back and grip the ball a bit better is
a good sign for Tucson moving forward.
Speaker 3 (18:29):
Yeah, so you talked about earlier about the getting back
to one of those one one score games. That's how
you do it. You have really good goal goalie play,
and that's what he did last year when they had
some when they won so many those games, when they
want so many one goal games, it's because Matthew lostos
plays as well. So it's nice for the Rown owners
to see both the goal is getting better and of
(18:52):
getting back to more of their true form. I think,
and if you think about it with the you talked
about how they how they went during the during losey streak.
They did have a couple of games like I mentioned,
where they did get built out, but other than that,
there were one goal games. But they're also they're they're
they're there one goal, they're they're close losses. But there
was their losses where they gave up a goal last
(19:13):
minute or the game, but an overtime goal or something
like that. But that was like how the game was
on Saturday, where it was a very close game for
the word noble game. They did give up a couple
of empty that goals, but what the first empty that
goals came off an unlucky bouts for them, and then
they had obviously they had that separations, but that's one
of the things that you have. What do you have
empty that goal? We have empty that it's open, so
you're trying to attack and you have guys uh up
(19:35):
to defend against counter atack obviously, but it was just
kind of unlucky baut and that that's how the game ended.
Like that brought effectively, I did you know? They they
did score another that goal. The roader is obstruck back
and scored another goal. But that game was a one
goal game for most of the game. And you go
back to Friday where they held on they had the
whole lot that lead for like eleven minutes and they
showed a jackson at the defense. They played really well.
(19:57):
The PK played really well. So it feels more like
they're back to They had normal losses the post those
heartbreaking losses where they give a goal last minute, or
they lose the overtime or something, they lose shoot out,
you know, or you know that kind of stuff, and
it's more kind of that's a typical road or loss.
So they need to get obviously when they want to
cut out those losses. But us to go start to
(20:18):
the seven Gay road trip and the last last month
they had they went three and four, which is a
good result of the road trip. And last year they
would it was like six and one last year on
the gyps and road trip. So they still have the
opportunity obtusly do that. But usually when they go to
the gyps A road trip they go under five hundred.
So right now I think the goal should be to
(20:38):
try to get three wins and once you get to
that point, try to get the five hundred or better
on this road tip. But I think they have that
capability to do that.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
Yeah, I was kind of weird last season.
Speaker 4 (20:48):
The gem Show trip took place during or like in
between the All Star breaks. So we start off on
the road, had our All Star break, and then we
finished it off in Iowa.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
Two went three, you won one and oh.
Speaker 4 (21:01):
In the gym Show trip last season they went they
won their first three games and then they lost the
last two against Iowa. Got one point in that match
as well. So last year was a five games this
year it's a seven game trip. And yeah, James, it's uh,
it's it's tough when you have to say, yeah, this
is probably the most important stretch of the season when
you're on the road so much. And I think sometimes
(21:23):
you forget too that we just had games Friday and
Saturday Saturday of two pm start, and now we have
games on Tuesday and Wednesday, so it's four games and
less than seven days obviously, and then you add on
to the Saturday and a Sunday game as well in Henderson,
so you know, again it's nice to get some days
(21:44):
in between, maybe with the cities that we're in. We're
Bakersfield right now in my hotel room. Unfortunately, I got
a little sick yesterday when we arrived here for the
Super Bowl. But uh, you know, and I talked to
see Pavin earlier too, and you know, as much as
you know, you're on a tough stretch right now. And
I talked to other guys too. You know, the locker
room is still very much one singular unit.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
Uh you know, no, uh, you know.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
Everyone's in it together, is what I would say. And uh,
you know, talking to Steve Pavinya. He's like, this is
the the travel is the best opportunity for guys to
really get close to one another and you know, get
to know each other, playing cards on the bus rides,
hanging out, going to dinner together, you know, something they
wouldn't really do as much at home. So, you know,
as again, as much as it's a tough stretch right now, uh,
(22:29):
the the unit continues to stay coherent. Guys are still smiling,
having fun at practice, and it just shows that the
coaching stuff has kept his team with positive vibes as
much as possible because you're gonna need it, right If
you focus on too much of the negatives, there more
are just gonna keep and continue to pile up.
Speaker 2 (22:47):
And uh, you know again, folks.
Speaker 4 (22:49):
Eventually the losses will start to become wins and the
Roadrunners will uh, we'll get back into the playoff picture.
But gotta stop Bigger's field first. They're they're playing good
hockey points in their last six games. Theyre four to
oh one and one in that stretch, and the Roadrunners
need to find a way to you know, find a
way to get a victory against them. Just do everything
(23:11):
you possibly can because it's just the one game, and uh,
that's all you can take. And actually I might have
said Bakersfield swept the h the Chicago Wolves earlier. They
actually lost in a final overtime, so they did not
sweep them technically, but they still banked three out of
four possible points, which at this point, the point is
what's gonna matter as we try to steal back that
(23:33):
seventh seed.
Speaker 3 (23:36):
Im sorry, absolutely, And the one thing you talked about
the road trip where last year, any year before, where
the Jim road trip was broken up by the All
Star Break, this year wasn't because it started the All
Star Break started right before the jimso road trip started,
so they don't get that break in that in terms
of that one. But it is going going back to
(23:58):
twenty twenty two or twenty three. Excuse me, they did
have to travel to Abbotsford. They other than that, they
were in California, may make Shield, Ontario, San Diego and
coachel and and then last year they they had one
game and making show, one game in San Diego, one
game into Coachell, and need to go to Iowa, which
is a bit of a trip obviously not as far
as going to Canada. But typically during the during the
(24:21):
GYP TOAR trips, they had to go to Canada, they
go to Texas, they go to Rockford or Chicago or
something like that. So this year they have that mostly
California tour. They go to Henderson and they come back
to California. But so it's not as rough on that
regard in terms of travel in terms of distance. But
they do have the opportunity to bomb, you know, they
do opportunity for Sammy to get integrated with the team,
(24:41):
get to know the guys more. They have the opportunity
for Maverick uh Latmreu, who he's been with a back
with the team for a little bit, but he was
also when he first joined the team when we first
started the season, he was only with tu Son for
a few games before he got called up to Utah.
So that's opportunity for him the kind of I'll get
to know the guys too. So it's a It's a
(25:02):
thing that Steve always talks about when they have these
on road trips, is that, Yeah, it's tough. You know,
it's tough to play those teams in their barns. It's
tough to travel stuff to go to the airport stuff
to go to, buses and everything. But it's just got
the opportunity for the guys to bond and that's a
chance that that they should that the you know, they're
gonna capitalize on.
Speaker 4 (25:22):
But yeah, James, Yeah, just capitalize on the capitalize on
the opportunity, capitalize on on the situation, and uh, just
just continue to roll. And I actually also just got
a nice email from the American Hockey League. Our game
on Sunday is going to be on the NHL Network
against the Henderson Silver Nights. So I don't think it's
(25:42):
our broadcast though, because it's gonna be the home team
broadcast running that. But if you want to, I don't know,
watch it on cable but you won't be hearing me,
go ahead and do so, or if you still want
to hear my awesome voice, continue to watch on HLTV
now on Flow of Sports. But so, yeah, NHL Network
on Sunday versus the Henderson Silver Nights, so that will
(26:02):
be fun. And yeah, it's it's just continuing on the
road trip, taking advantage of just you know, hanging out
and continuing to have a good time. Let's listen to
our first and only interview of this week's show, I
caught up with defenceman Maverick Lamru, who is starting to
find a stride again for Tucson. As I said, first
(26:23):
point in his last five games. And he's just another
one of those awesome prospects for the Utah Hockey Club
that we're glad to have here in Tucson as he
continues to grow, continues to develop, and I caught up
with him after the Saturday afternoon Laws.
Speaker 2 (26:38):
But taking the split in San Jose.
Speaker 4 (26:40):
Map not the result we wanted, but you know, another
tight game and San Jose has been a really tough
team to be at home this season. Just where your
takeaways from tonight's matchup?
Speaker 5 (26:48):
Yeah, I feel like you gotta started winning a couple
in the roles. I feel like winning yesterday was really
good for us. I feel like you need another win.
Tonight didn't get a luckymus, so I feel like we
played a really good game overall.
Speaker 4 (27:01):
Yeah, and you got to a point in your last
five games or so. Just what do it feel like
to get back on the score sheet and how do
you build from tonight's game?
Speaker 5 (27:08):
Yeah, it definitely feels good to be back, Not like
I was in trying the last couple of games, sometimes
you just don't get lucky, so getting it was a
lucky one. So getting one like that always feels good.
I feel like what we got to keep building all
what we're doing here for the end of the road trip.
I feel like just yesterday's when definitely gave us confidence,
(27:30):
definitely like felt good as a team. So I feel
like we got to get this feeling back for for
the next couple of games you on this.
Speaker 4 (27:35):
Road trip, Yeah, travel dat to Bakersfield. We'll see what
the scores of their game tonight. But yeah, that could
be a potential matchup for the seventh seed, and just
how big could that game be for us?
Speaker 5 (27:45):
Yeah, especially like we're really tight with them right now,
so that's definitely gonna be a really big game. Like
we're not far off. So I feel like every game
is really really important for us right now, especially now
playing against teams in our division like in their division,
those games olds matchup so even more important.
Speaker 3 (28:02):
So it's all.
Speaker 5 (28:03):
Playoffs came for now and we need the most points.
We can't get out this roll ship, and that's what
we're gonna do.
Speaker 4 (28:08):
Thanks Matt, so Me and Maverick Lamberu catching up after
Saturdays afternoons five through loss to the San Jose Barracuda,
but taking the series split only two of the four
games that were playing against San Jose this year as well.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
It was a fun trip, James.
Speaker 4 (28:24):
I got to run into a lot of old friends,
a lot of old colleagues, old friends that I called
games with for San Jose State Hockey. Had Max Miller,
who is a hockey news reporter and the NHL dot
Com correspondent for the San Jose Sharks, had him on
the call, just talking about our old days calling San
(28:45):
Jose State Hot games together. Of course, he has a
lot of knowledge of the San Es Barcouda as well,
so I wanted to kind of dive into that area.
Saw my old boss, Nick nolan Berger, who brought me
in as an intern in my first two years in
the HL, where I eventually met eight. Also met my
old boss with Black Dog Hockey who we called the
San Jose State Hockey games on, and just ran to
(29:08):
a lot of friends as well. Went to the Sharps
game on the Oh boy, what game was it? I
believe it was a Thursday night game before the Friday matchup.
Shark's lost, but it was a nice seed back at
SAP Center as well, and overall just a really fun trip.
I feel like I've done so much on this trip
already and we're still gone for like a week and
a half.
Speaker 3 (29:27):
It just started. So when did the Texi Arena open?
Was the last year it was?
Speaker 2 (29:31):
Yeah, it opened two seasons ago.
Speaker 4 (29:33):
So my first year was at So yeah, I've got
I gotten the whole experience. My first season was as
it was at Sad my opinion, too big of an
arena for an NHL HL team. So yeah, then they
opened up TECHSU the next season. Spent my second year
with San Jose at that rink. It was awesome. It's
a it's a nice It's a smaller rink, you know,
(29:53):
it's not Agracer arena size. It houses maybe forty two
hundred fans, but uh yeah, I can get loud in there,
you know when especially when the since they're playing a
little better this year, they've had more of a crowd
in the building. It's easy access to everything, the offices
are there, it's a really nice bar and to play ats.
And also the broadcast spot is probably one of the
best because you're just you're you're right there, You're so
(30:15):
close to the action, and yeah, it was just it
was really nice being back and just seeing everybody again.
James also a big news coming yesterday with the Four
Nations face off coming up. So the NHL is now
on the break for about a week.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
Is it a week?
Speaker 3 (30:34):
I think it's a week, right, I think it's a week.
Speaker 4 (30:36):
Yeah, week or two. Josh Stone is now back with Tucson.
He's been reassigned to the Roadrunners. He was assigned to
us on Super Bowl Sunday, so he's back with the
team and man, what a bolster to this lineup.
Speaker 2 (30:48):
We again no clue how long can we back for?
Speaker 4 (30:51):
This can only be until Four Nations is over, or
it can be with us the rest of the season.
Really don't know, but this is huge right now. Think
about it. You have Josh Done back in the mix.
We just acquired Samuel Walker. We know how great Yamamoto
and uh and and he Big have been playing Soaklovs
trying to heat up again, but Kanski's been consistent all
(31:13):
season long. There's a lot of guys who can start
helping the Roadrunners get wins here and again, only if
it's if it's only for the rest of this road trip.
So be it having Josh done back in a crucial
time for Tucson. Can really big big be big for
this team.
Speaker 3 (31:27):
Yeah, you think it wouldn't he would be for longer
because he he kind of went up to replace still
in gun Thraftter he got hurt, which by the way,
Tommy Fid and see don't score the game winning the
overtime winning goal in Tuesday games pretty well, but he
kind of went up to replace them in doing goun
obviously game back last week, so I was kind of
expecting Josh get sent back, especially since he going into
(31:50):
those games last week about the time when when when
I was finishing up the story he had been only
had three points of thirteen games. But then he went
on he did really well less least three games. We're
getting four points, including two on Saturday's game. So it
comes in not only with his talent and his work
ethic and you know, his while he works with the
team and everything of his personality everything, he also comes
and played hot. So that's a really big boost for
(32:12):
the Roadhounders.
Speaker 4 (32:13):
Yeah, he has seven points since his return to the
Utah Hockey Club in fifteen games, but he actually ended
off the last few games before the NHL break with
four points in his last three games. He had a
multiple point game on the February ninth shootout victory against
(32:34):
the Washington Capitals, the first shootout victory in Utah Hockey
Club history and four nation face offs is from February
twelve to February twentieth, so a few days for everyone
to get to their teams and start getting ready for.
Speaker 2 (32:51):
The tournament.
Speaker 4 (32:51):
But that means, you know, again, if Josh Jones only
here for the tournament, he will be sent back by
the end of the trip.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
So he's going to be with us for the rest
of the road.
Speaker 4 (33:01):
Trip, which again we'll we'll take it right, you know,
it's Josh Jone was killing it before being sent up
back to Utah Hockey Club.
Speaker 2 (33:09):
As deserving as it is.
Speaker 4 (33:10):
He has twenty one points in twenty five total games
this year for the road Runners. And you know again,
Andrew Gazino and Kevin Cannadon have been striding well towards
coming back very soon, but they're still not fully one
hundred percent yet, so the road Runs will take as
much help as as the team can get with you know, again,
(33:31):
we snapped the eight game losing streak, but we're still
trying to get back to that last playoff spot and
could have come at at any better time, especially with
the game coming up against Bakersfield tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (33:42):
Yeah, and also it was almost almost extra help too.
In addition to Josh, the Utah tried tried to. They
did wave last time. Coachonica Great had a lot of
success with the Runners and he's been with the NHL
for a while. They did wave him with the ten
of setting into the tuc soon, but unfortunately the Penguins
picked him up. So it would have been fun to
(34:04):
get to get him back on back in the Tucson.
But that's just story. Things goes. When you have a
player like that about talent that that gets waived, the
obvious teams are gonna be interested.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
Yeah, we was.
Speaker 4 (34:13):
We wish Flatislav the best of luck with the the
Pittsburgh Penguins organization, a guy that yeah wished that he
cleared waivers. But it's not gonna happen every time, right
we We saw it happen with Kylie Yamamoto, you know,
getting getting.
Speaker 2 (34:27):
Claimed off the waivers.
Speaker 4 (34:28):
Uh saw it with a defenseman with the Toronto Maplea's organization.
I don't know the name exactly, but uh utah tried
sending him to us and he got claimed back by
by Toronto and then now with coliachronic happening as well,
so we wish him the best of luck. But uh yeah,
again it's a big bolstere in the laptop. Josh Stone
(34:49):
back and dragu Zino and Kevin Cannonon are are doing
well with their with their rehab assignments or just rehabbing
getting back to us as soon as possible, but probably
won't be by the time the Gem showd trip is over,
probably hopefully when we get back to Tucson to start
off a four game home stand, starting off against the
(35:10):
Abbots for Canucks. But well, yeah, we'll take the help
for Josh Jones. Really happy to have him back. And
yeah again, just a guy to have in that locker room.
See again, because as much as uh, we don't want
to see them, you know, we want to see him
in the NHL. Doesn't mean that we don't miss them,
just you know, the personalities and and what they break
to the table. So if and every time he comes
and goes back up, it's like all right, if this
(35:32):
is the last time like we'll see uh. And now
I didn't expect I don't think anyone expected him for
the potentially be back for us for the week. But
if this is the last stretch we see of Josh
done that, we we wish him the best of luck,
but we'll enjoy him for the time being.
Speaker 3 (35:47):
Yeah, it's kind of an ideal situation because you are
for the runners, because they do generally want to see
the guys leave, go go, go, go up today. I'll
not leave, but you know I'll get promoted. But they're
not playing the games. So he gets had experience of, uh,
they're not playing in the NHL games there at that
time during the tournament, so he gets that experience of
coming back to Tucson and or not coming back to Tucson,
(36:08):
coming on the road trip and helping him give him
that boost and fitting in and uh. And he's a
guy who fits in really well in terms of his personality,
terms how he plays. And he's not a guy who's
demanding the fuck. He's a guy who he's he's the
guy who disrupts the lockerman every think he's not like
that now, I mean, he's in a positive, you know,
a very positive addition. And he's the guy who think
guys love to see love to see back.
Speaker 4 (36:30):
Yeah, especially that he's uh, he's changed his style of play,
right he We were so used to him being the
goal scorer from last season with his twenty six goals
in his UH in his rookie season, the most goals
by a rookie ever in Tucson Rotro's history. And he
was getting close to Michael Carconi's most all the time
until he was called up. But that's okay because he
(36:51):
had so much success in the NHL in his uh
first season. But this year he's kind of changed that
right now, he's uh, he's more of a balanced player
where he's sending up plays rather than scoring the final goal.
Speaker 5 (37:01):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (37:02):
He has thirteen assists to eight goals. And we even
saw near the end of last season because it seemed
that Don was just a goal scorer, but he started
adding the apples to his redpertoire as well, and he
ended last season with twenty six goals and twenty assists.
And then this year, as I just said, the thirteen assists,
eight goals for twenty one points in twenty five games played.
Speaker 3 (37:24):
Yeah, and he's you know, obviously he's getting that maguess
game more matured, made game more kid, getting his game
more rounded, more well rounded. But he did, to be fair,
in the last he had just three points in those
last I mean those excuse me, the four points in
the last three games, but two of those were goals
the last two games against Carolina and against Washington two
(37:45):
of those goals. So he's still he's still getting those goals,
especially lately.
Speaker 4 (37:50):
Yeah, so he's glad to have Josh Stone back and
we'll we'll just be ready to roll James. It's it's
still continuing on this seven game road trip. I feel
like we've had a whole trip alone in San Jose,
probably because we got there a few days early and
uh just seeing a lot all the old friends, you know,
going out and uh seeing the town again, seeing campus.
Speaker 2 (38:10):
It was a lot.
Speaker 4 (38:11):
But to think that we still have a trip for
about a week and a half, it's, uh, it's just
the beginning. And uh yeah, now the Roadrunners, uh have
two new formidable forwards back. We know what Josh Don
has done with us in the past. He's back with us.
And we just saw Samuel Walker get four points in
his uh Roadrunners debut as well, So lots of excitement
(38:31):
coming up for the Roadrunners huge game tomorrow night here
in Bakersfield at the Mechanics Bank Arena for a potential
you know, is just a huge matchup.
Speaker 2 (38:42):
It's not four to seventh seed.
Speaker 4 (38:43):
If we win it, we get with them two and
then maybe we'll see what happens against the Ontario Rain
as well, because Bakersfield wouln't play their game UH that
fall until that following Friday. But we'll focus on what
we can control. We'll control what wee can control, as
we always say, and very very big matchup coming up tomorrow.
James Stakes for joining me again. This has been the
Roadrunners Insider podcast. Tomorrow night we will be back for
