Speaker 1 (00:00):
When you want more road Runners, We've got more road Runners.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
This is the Tucson Roadrunners Insider Podcast.

Speaker 3 (00:08):
First overreaction episode of the Tucson Roadrunners Insider Podcast, just
a kind of couple of hours after the final whistle
was blown here at the Tucson Arena. Jonathan Schaeffer here
with Arizona Daily Stars, James Kelly and James we'll cut
right to the chase, or really cut right into the

(00:30):
cheese at The Roadrunners had over the weekend. Not a
good opening weekend for the team, losing a couple of
games at home against the Texas Stars, both games where
each side had a or really both games where the
Roadrunners had a three to one lead. We did see
the positives which will go over. We'll talk about the

(00:50):
goaltending of Tucson. We'll talk about Stobbers second start. We'll
talk about what the Roadrunners need to do moving on
in this big years against Bakersfield coming up. We'll talk
about opening red carpet, the faceoff gal that we had
on Wednesday, and you know, regardless of everything that happened,
it was an overall still pretty fun week here in

(01:13):
Tucson for the road Runners to start off the home
opening schedule and just the home schedule overall, but unfortunately
it was a bit spoiled by the Texas Stars, a
team the Roadrunners had a lot of success against last
year with a four to oh record a nine to
two to one to no overall record against the Central Division.
But h new season, new story as Texas kind of

(01:36):
gets their revenge on Tucson with a opening weekend home
opener for the road Runners and spoiled there for Texas
side as well. And James, you were here for both games,
and you know, just what was it like to you
for you to see the Tucson Electric crowd and all
the fans back here for opening weekend. Even though it

(01:58):
was spoiled, it was still nice to see everybody.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Yeah, it was a weird weekend because you know, they
lost obviously two games, but it's fun to be back.
And then they during those games, they controlled most of
those games. You know, they were winning the game for
most of the most of that time, they were kind
of dominating possession, but you know, dominating the game. But
then they ended up with those heartbreaking losses. So it's
kind of a weird, weird weekend, I'd say.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
Yeah, And you know, for this game tonight, James, uh,
you know, we'll go over last night's game as well,
but we'll talk about the.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Sunday game first.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
You know, after losing the the Saturday and the night
game for Tucson, it wasn't really much of a stronger
start for the road Runners. Texas scored four oh eight
into the game and kind of just dominated the first
few minutes, and you just thought like, oh gosh, you know,
not here we go again. But it's like, man, you know,
we gotta we gotta get things rolling here, guys, and

(02:53):
we did. One hundred threw tied it up and McCartney's
goal was waved off for the goaltender interference, so we
thought we had initially tied it. But then Hunter Drew
did tie it at fifteen twenty eight in the first period,
and we were tied up. Hunter Drew continues to be
a formidable force for the Roadunners, which will go over
in just a moment. But regardless of that, Tucson looked

(03:16):
like they had controlled the game once again. They scored
three unanswered goals. Maverick Lamrouse scored his second career goal.
We'll talk about him as well, but Tucson once again
for the second night in a row three to one lead,
but Texas just took over that entire third period, outshooting
the Roadrunners twenty to two, and Tucson just couldn't hang on.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Yeah, it would look like at the beginning there was
going to be kind of hangover with the quick quick
return around that super quick But the last night's game
was a normal time at seven. This today's game was
it started at four, So you kind of felt like
when Texas scores an early goal, they might have like
a heal Runners might have like a little hangover or
something from that emotional, devastating loss last night. But they
came back and you know, Ben McCartney had that goal,

(04:02):
but you know, just allowed. But then five minutes later
after that, about five minutes later Hunter Duke get entered
back and then the Roadount really took over the game.
But then the Texas really took over that last period
with the twenty to two shots overall and then ended
up with forty five shots to two Sons twenty two.
We're all for the whole game, but before that two
soon was it just felt like two song was going

(04:24):
to cut cruise to at least before third. Beard felt
like two Song was going to cruise to the victory,
but Texas really turned it around at the end.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
Yeah, you know you put you kind of put on
the spot there, James. Heartbreaking.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
It was two heartbreaking losses on Saturday Nights game. Again,
it was the Saturday Nights game. Was just Texas responding
to everything. Cameron Hebig kind of a storybook beginning after
the you know opening red carpet.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
Karen Hebig, entering.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
His fifth season as a Roadrunner, scored the first goal
the home opener.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
You're thinking, let's go, we we got it.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
What a great start, and then Texas scored twenty seconds
later to tie it up. And then Tucson took back
the league with Maverick Lamru's first goal as a Tucson Roadrunner,
and then Andra Gazino, who's been on a hot streak
to start his Tucson career as well, made it three
to one, and once again Texas scored two quick unanswered

(05:20):
goals made it a.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
Three to three game.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
Hunter Drew gave us back the lead to make it
four to three, and then saw that unfortunate play by
Matthew Voloto, who just had some trouble playing it near
the trapezoids and Peterson kind of just stole it from
him and scored on the empty net. And same story
was tonight. With just about sixteen seconds left, Petrovic scored

(05:44):
for Texas to give him a four to three lead.
So it's not like these were games for the road
Runners where they just got straight blown out and they
showed no fight. They did, but you saw the stuff
out that they just need to work on, you know,
they need to work on, you know, playing.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
The full sixty minutes.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
And I heard Andre Agazino after the game with Kim
Koda Roblez and you know he said, just shows how much,
uh there isn't margin, any margin for error, and uh,
this was the game that showed it. Because really in
those like thirty seconds tonight, when there was a TI
game and Texas just kept.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
Shooting and shooting and shooting and shooting.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
It's like they got rodards, need to win at least
this next face off to keep it out and just
get to overtime, and Texas won it and that's when
they were able to score.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
It was really you know, heartbreaking is really the best
best way to describe it, because that that second last
goal that you know, they had the MPNU galopsie at
the end, but the second last goal that Texas had
was at short end goal. So it's the end of
the game. You're expecting, like you know, with the home crowd,
with the with the big crowd for the opening night,
you're expecting kind of the momentum that Tuoson is going

(06:53):
to come back and and you know, win in overtime
or they're gonna you know, win and shoot out or something.
And then you see the kind of a really crazy
play where Emilia Pete Peterson he scored that he took
it off of Matt Matt's stick and he scored that
goal like that. It was just really wild ending and
then they ended it ended up scoring late again Texas

(07:16):
did on Sunday night. So it's something that we talked
to Steve after the after the game, probably not going
to be on the podcast because his voice was kind
of kind of weak after after getting a flu shot,
but he said that he didn't think their conditioning was
I think that condition is fine. He just thinks that
they need to work on their mental you know, they're
psychological where at work at the end, because they were

(07:38):
kind of you know, kind of like skating, like the
kind of with the crowd with train with us, we
felt like it was going to be headed toward overtime.
And I'm not not saying that the Roaders felt like
that way, but kind of kind of ended up looking
that way where they were kind of let their foot
off the gas a little bit. But other than that,
during the game they had it was a lot of
different games during during most of.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
The game, Yeah, and you know, there's never gonna be
a moment where even though teams sometimes do this and
they do it, will never admit it, but sometimes there's
moments where it's like, just get to overtime, you know,
get the point and see if you can get a
catch a lucky break and overtime, or take it to
the shootout where you know, now the play is done,
it's just a player versus goalie. And you know, I'm

(08:19):
not saying it was exactly like that. I'm never gonna
predict what the road Runers are trying to do in
their game plan, but it kind of just felt like
in that last four to five minutes that the Roadrunners
were just surviving. You know, they were just kind of
playing survival trying to I'm not saying again, I'm not
saying they're trying to get to overtime, but for obvious reasons,

(08:39):
they're just trying to prevent Texas from scoring, and they're
just playing straight defense. And you know, it's just one
of those games where, really the whole entire weekend where
anytime he decided had the park, they were just instantly
met on the by the opposing team. So it was
a tough game to get space with. Even though we
did see a good amount of goals in this weekend,

(08:59):
it was really hard focles be between both sides and
talk to the talk to a couple of staff members
from Texas and they're just telling us, you know, just
how much the Stars and the Roadrunners play similar to
one another compared to the rest of the teams in
the Central Division. And again, these were two really good games.
These were two games that you know, Roadrunners could have

(09:22):
easily won. And I think that's the most frustrating part
is you know, yeah, if you get blown out both games,
you get blown out both games, and it happens, you know,
But I think the fact that Tucson had three to
one leads in each of these games makes it just
more frustrating. But uh, you know, last year, James, we
started off, you know slow, not not crazy slow, but

(09:43):
we started off a little slower. We know, we started
two and zero, lost to coach Or Yeah, lost to
Coachella Valley. The home opener, won against San Diego. The
next game started three and one, but then we lost
two games against Bakersfield and started three and three.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
Now it's kind of the opposite. We are one in three,
I know.

Speaker 3 (10:00):
Now we have two games against Figgersfield this weekend where
we need a sweet to get back to three and three.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
They said it last week when they played at Colorado,
and we know Colora was gonna be a good team
coming in and I'm not as well first and the
Central Division as it's probably your but other people, but
it seemed like Texas always is a good team. So
I was going into the series, I think it's gonna
be another good series. And it really felt like another
couple of playoff games. And when you have games like that,
any one mistake could just cost everything. And that's what

(10:27):
the that's really felt like on Sunday, where it felt like,
you know, even though Texas had so many shots in
their period, it felt like the Rwners were holding them
off and they were gonna they're facing that barrage of
that that shot barrage that Texas had, and they were
gonna hold off and make it to overtime and regroup
and at least get a point. But then you have
that late goals, so it really just changed everything. So

(10:48):
it's one of those series where it's it's learning experience, probably,
but it's one of those series where everything there's just
just no margin for eric. Just two teams are just
really good like that.

Speaker 3 (10:59):
It's a hot game we're going on right in front
of us, James. It's not Roadrunners hockey game ended. We
got our podcasts ready to go and then have some
Beer League hockey going on in front of us after
the Roadrunners game, So we'll keep you keeping an eye.
And the Scots currently zero zero right now with nineteen
minutes up to go in the first frame. But yeah, James,

(11:21):
you know, last season we faced a lot of adversity,
you know, the getting swead by Bakersfield early in the season,
the injuries, the callups that we had to deal with,
and the guys who stepped in losing Josh done for
like the last month of the season, still won games,

(11:41):
losing Matthew Vilalta a bit to the call up as well,
where our goaltenders really stepped into the light, especially Dylan Wells.
And it's just one of those cases, you know, we
we're facing adversity right now with the with the slow start.
You know, it just no team wants to start one
and three, and I guess this is the first adversity
that will face up the season and just how are
we gonna find a way to get back to five

(12:03):
hundred and what do we need to fix? And we
saw a lot of what we need to fix for
this weekend and uh, you know, just not making the mistakes.
And you know, I wouldn't say the guys got comfortable,
but when you have a three to one lead, you
just can't let the other team come back like the
Roadrunners did with the Stars.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
Yeah, there's some it's it's it's you know, there are
more really difficult losses. It's not like they lost six
zero or five zero or something like that. So it's
it's it's one of those situations where it feels like
you can make some adjustments and you can overcome those
and get in instead of being one and three, you
could be four and no or at least three and
one or something. So it seems like they're close. It's
one thing that they were that we're recording the podcast

(12:41):
at what later than probably would have because it was
just a while from the get out of locker room,
because they're so you know, because such disappointing loss and
I lost tonight. It's a tough situation. But it's also
yet to remember that they also have a lot of
new guys, so you're gonna probably expect a little bit of,
you know, justment period. It's been. They've had four games

(13:03):
around their belt now together and one week of training camp.
But they're still together. But they're still you know, still
kind of sorting through, still kind of a lot of
new faces, and and it's a team that's really balanced.
So that's one thing that it's not so obvious. It's
not like in the past years where you have Michelle
or Carconi that you're gonna gonna get all the points,
where this year they're really balanced. I mean, coming into
the series, I was looking at the leaders. There are

(13:25):
two points and now there's a bunch of people. There's
some some are kind of pulling away. But overall, there's
a lot of guys who have points. And even I
mean Menglos Kleaman, he's the guy who's been big for
last couple of years, but he didn't he he has
first points or was the first goal first points.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
It was his first goal. He had to assists last week.

Speaker 2 (13:44):
Yeah, so he got so he got his first goal.
So you're looking at how spread it out it is.
It's a little bit harder to know. In my mind,
it's a little bit harder to kind of make those
adjustments and kind of figure out who's who's going to
be those as opposed to win your team that's dominated
by one or two players, at least hot wise, you
can it's so easier to figure out who's going to
be that one scoring and at the end, But right

(14:07):
now there's kind of still figuring out who's gonna be
that go to guy. But other hand, it's positive that
they have so many different options, so this will trying
to figure that out.

Speaker 3 (14:16):
Yeah, and I was actually saying this on the broadcast.
You know, last year we had you know, Josh Stone
and Dylan Gunther as the top two stars of the team,
the top two prospects of the entire organization, you would say.
And you know, we saw Dylan Gunther for the handful
of games that we saw him, and he was almost
a point per game guy. And then of course Josh

(14:37):
Stones scoring the twenty six goals, making the All Rookie Team,
making the All Star Game. It's a little different this year.
You know, we don't have I'm not saying we have
any talented prospects. We do, but we just don't have
the big names of the Gunthers or the Dones just yet.
We will eventually, but uh, you know, it's those that's
gonna take time. And it's a very very balanced team

(14:59):
right now. And you know, like we said, James, we
expected maybe a four to oh start, you know, just
with the whole talent that this team has, and you
didn't expect a one and three start.

Speaker 1 (15:11):
But it just happens. It's just hockey.

Speaker 3 (15:13):
Some teams get a little bit slower rolling on the
ball than usual. And for Tucson standpoint, it was a
five hundred season up until the seventh game when we
had that series against the Chicago Wolves, and then that's
when really Tucson got things off and running. We have
three guys with four points this season, which all tied

(15:34):
for the lead on the team. Of course, Andre Gazino
four points in four games, Akuratu four and four and
Igor Sokolov four and four as well. All the sudden
Hunter Drew has three points and all of a sudden
Maverick lamru has three points as well, and Lamber's He
had a good weekend, James. He got his first couple
points as a roadrunner, first couple of points as a

(15:54):
professional hockey player. He scored a goal and an assist
in the first game this weekend series. He had a
goal on Sunday's game Slash Tonight. Because we're recording right
now on this Sunday, this podcast will be most likely
released Monday morning for you guys the list on the
way to work.

Speaker 1 (16:10):
But regardless of.

Speaker 3 (16:11):
That, Lambreau had a really good weekend and he just
played a smart, strong and super fast For his six
seven frame, you had that goal where he came out
of the penalty box and scored right in front of
the net. I mistaked him for Ryan McGregor for a
moment because the ten looked like at sixteen. I realized, like, dude,
this guy's six seven. How am I getting a mixed

(16:34):
up with our other players. But yeah, he had a
really good weekend and it's just something from the build off.

Speaker 2 (16:39):
Of Yeah, he's six seven, but Steve said that he
plays almost like he's six foot or six six four.
He said six four first and then like six foot.
But he's one of those prospects that they have this
year that has really impressed so far. That he scored
that his first goal is first professional goal is rememberable
one over by the over in the banner logo, over
by the blue line, one of those classic, really impressive,

(17:01):
really exciting investment goals. And then he scored that goal
tonight over by the crease, so that that was really fun.
He's a guy who he has a lot of experience
in terms of, you know, I'm playing juniors at high
level and he could come over from juniors right now,
and he also played for for Team Canada last year
and so that was so he's a guy who he's

(17:23):
new new to pression hockey, but he's also a lot
of experience and he's already looking like a guy who's
almost he's really fitting in with Willy even though he's
just moved over from from Quebec.

Speaker 3 (17:34):
Yeah, and Maverick's one of those guys that has been
kind of one of the big names throughout the entire
offseason with training camp with Utah, with the Rookie tournament,
and he was a name that floated around for potentially
making the you know, opening day roster for the Utah
Hockey Club. But as DM Bill Armstrong, he likes to

(17:55):
send guys to the AHL to let them bake, you know,
let them get ready, and Maverick Lamberus just the recent
set of you know, with the long list of prospects
that GMBA sends down to the AHL to let them
get ready for the National Hockey League.

Speaker 1 (18:14):
And even guys like.

Speaker 3 (18:15):
Julian Lutz and Miko Mettika and even Ardam Duda have
all had good starts to the season as well. Mitika
had a point in Saturday's game, ardam Duda had two
points over the weekend series in Colorado, and Dulan Lutz
has three points in four games as well. So really
all the prospects of this team right now have had

(18:36):
really good starts. And and again it's a very different team.
It's a lot of new faces, it's a lot of
chemistry that has to get built up, and the offense
is definitely there, you know, scoring just the one goal
and in our first game, but then we scored four
in the second for our win. We scored four in
the first loss of this weekend series, and we scored

(18:58):
three on Sunday, so you know, the offense is definitely there.
It's just kind of just playing smart with the puck
and kind of making it easier for our goaltenders Matthew
Willalta and Jackson Stauber. Still facing a lot of shots
throughout this weekend as well. But let's get to our
first couple of interviews. Let's you first from Ostain mcgyanski

(19:19):
on Maverick Lamaru. Again, Lambau had a good weekend for
the team and got his first couple of points as
a North American professional hockey pro player with three points
over this weekend. And we heard from Austin Ganski on
Maverick Lamaru after Sunday night's game.

Speaker 4 (19:40):
Yeah, for sure, definitely not the outcome we wanted to
do this weekend with two losses against a good team
with Texas, But I think there's a lot of positives
who can take out of this weekend. I thought our
penalty kill was was very good. It's a good unit
on the power play for Texas there, and I just
thought her for check And when we're playing roadrunner hockey,
we're getting pucks in and finishing checks and creating chances
off the rush, and that's what we were doing sweeker.

Speaker 3 (20:00):
We just heard from Austin mcgansky and Kevin connaughton on
the rookie Maverick Lameru on the weekend he had had
with the three points in the two games, and you know,
just the kind of bright spots of this past weekend.
And one of the other bright spots was the goaltending. Yeah,
Matthew Bolalta off to a bit of a slower start

(20:23):
than what he's accustomed to, with the zero to two
start and allowing the at least couple of goals per game.
And you know, for his sake, we know what he's
capable of. We know that the level that he's gonna
turn the corner to. But then when you have the
other guy in the other in the crease, like Jackson
Stabber who had to face over thirty five shots per game,

(20:46):
made really face over twenty shots every third period he's
played so far, and he kept the road Runners this
one as long as he possibly could.

Speaker 2 (20:55):
Yeah, I think I mentioned it before, but he did
have a Texas had twenty to that just a third
period a loan, and he really kept them in it.
He really it really felt like the that game was
going to move on and move on into overtime, but.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
They he and the.

Speaker 2 (21:13):
Either the guy's in defense, he just really made a
lot of stops and it wasn't until the very end
that Deca just finally broke through and got that game
winning goal. But it really felt like they're gonna pull
on and you know, we regroup or something, or you know,
we're regrouping and go to overtime, or you could get
that standings point or maybe regroup and take it to
shootout or something. But it was really impressive apping for

(21:36):
him and keeping the road Runners in the game.

Speaker 1 (21:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (21:40):
Stobburr in his first two starts as a Roadrunner has
made seventy four saves on eighty shots that goes for
a nine to twenty five say percentage. He has a
three goals against average right now. Volalta for the other
end of the Roadrunners creased four point zero eight goals
against with an zero to two star with an eight

(22:01):
six seven stay percentage. But again, James, Uh, you know
last season the Roadrunners wouldn't say at a slow start,
but they started three and three last year.

Speaker 1 (22:09):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (22:10):
And they were three at one at a time until
they got swept by Bakersfield in the opening home stand
with the Roadverns had a six game Homestand it's kind
of the opposite. Now we are one to three at
the moment, we had just gotten swept by Texas and
now the Roadrunners have to play Bakersfield to try to
get back to five hundred.

Speaker 2 (22:30):
It's gonna be another tough weekend after, you know, a
tough series over at Colorado against one of the definitely
won't projected to be one of the contenders for the division.
And then this week against this past weekend against Texas,
which had been he has tradicially been a good team.
We don't know they're gonna be this year, but they did.

(22:51):
They did the go over the weekend and next week
against and then on weekend the Bakersfield, the team that
you hadn't had the road Runners number last year, even
you know the Runners for second division, their team. It's
a good if if you're fan, if you're neutral, it's
a good week weekend to go to that series because
it's gonna we're here to see some good hockey game.

Speaker 1 (23:11):
Yeah, good hockey. Good promotional to nights.

Speaker 3 (23:13):
We have the Alazo Day two soon making its twenty
four to twenty five debut, as well as the El
Lazo jerseys the Roadrunners will be wearing in each of
those games. And then we have Gouls and Goals on
Saturday night to celebrate Halloween. Because the Roadrunners won't be
here for Halloween, they go to Abbots for the week after,

(23:35):
and then we get that weekend off.

Speaker 1 (23:36):
We get all of hallow weekend off.

Speaker 3 (23:38):
Not saying that, you know, we're still gonna get ready
for the games and we're still going to practice, but
we don't have any games. And it's kind of a
rare instance where we have no games in the middle
of the season, something we never had last year. So
I think it'll be nice for the guys to get
that break there, but they have a next four tough
games to play.

Speaker 2 (23:57):
Yeah, it's gonna be a nice break for the road
because usually you know, at the beginning of the season,
you have you have a lot of energy going in
that season. You know, a lot of you know, excitement,
but then start of the season, but it's been a
it's been a it's going to be a grueling start
the season for the Drunners with the you know that
first trip to Carolato and the altitude and then you
know the preseason over at Henderson and then a tough

(24:20):
series against tough home series against the Stars and then
a tough series against the Bakersfield and then going up
to Edmonton. So it's nice for them to get that
break and nice to get there fresh. And it was
Adrian would say get a lot of practice days in
there that that's good for development of players, especially the
young players they have.

Speaker 1 (24:38):
Yeah, the practice days are always crucial.

Speaker 3 (24:41):
The road Runers had a couple of tough practices this
past weekend and they had a strong one when it
came to the conditioning and James, you talked to Steve
after the Gabe and uh, you know, Steve Poppin doesn't
think it's a it's a conditioning issue as to why
the Roadrunners haven't been able to keep leads in this
past week and where they had a three to one

(25:02):
lead in in both games, and you know, it's it's
not that they're going to work on conditioning throughout the week,
but they just need to start working on those small
margin for air situations because that's what happened this past weekend.

Speaker 2 (25:15):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (25:16):
You know, Redurands had a three to one lead on
Saturday night and blew that one and the Texas Stars
scored a Lake goal to win that one six to four.
Last night, same story, they Roadruns were up three to one,
Texas bombarded with the shots twenty to two. That's not
going to win you games in the third period for shots.
It just felt like the road Runs were kind of

(25:36):
playing just survival at the end there, and you know,
it would definitely be one of the things that road
Runs need to work on with a short practice week.

Speaker 1 (25:43):
With Bakersfield on Friday.

Speaker 2 (25:45):
Yeah, something that you know, they played a lot better
on Friday's Earth Saturdays game, I should say Friday still
Friday Saturday they played Love Satura's game where they you know,
kept Coke taking the lead and Texast Cook coming back
in the brigame the lead, and then third period on
Sunday it was more Texas took over that third period

(26:06):
and I came back and scored those three goals. But
it's something that he talked about that they he thinks
that physically they're fine, you know, their conditioned well enough
basically to get over that hump and have that psychological
edge at the end of the game where they're able
to hold down and you know, not give up those
late goals like the kind of fluckish goal that Matt
gave up when they scored on the clearance or scored

(26:28):
that goal late at the end of game last night
where and then I went up ended up getting them
Texas will win. So he thinks it's fixable, obviously, and
it's something that you know, it's it's not physically, he
doesn't think. He thinks it's just a little kind of
psychological edge to keep that going.

Speaker 3 (26:48):
Yeah, it's it's it's all psychological at the end of
the day, because we know our guys are always going
to be well conditioned enough for every single game. As
as we said, it's a new team, and you know,
I wouldn't say this is the slowest start in the world,
but definitely didn't expect a one in three start through
the first four games of the season. This team is
too talented to have a one in three record. But

(27:11):
you know, yeah, it's gonna be a two really tough
games this weekend for Tucson to figure out those kings
again with the kind of short week of practice with
the game on Sunday and now you have a game
on Friday against Bakersfield. Looking at the Pacific Division within
the first two weeks of the year, again, it's a
little early to look at the standings, but you know,
we always like watched We always like to watch the standings.

(27:33):
What Adrian I did throughout the podcast a lot last year,
and uh, you know we're gonna do the same here.
So throughout the first couple of games of the year.
Of course, Regulars once again off to a hot start.
They are four to one in five games. San Jose
made a couple of big moves in the offseason. They
got a scare Off as their main goaltender. Now he's
had a phenomenal start to the year. They made a

(27:56):
couple of big moves at their their forwards and and
their defense as well. So kudas up to a good
start coming off a seven to three win against Iowa
Wild Bakersfield hasn't lost a game in regulation yet. They
are two oh one and oh Colorado Eagles are two
to one oh and one at Potsford's two to one one,
and you have Coachella, Ontario with one and two records.

(28:18):
Then you have two Son Henderson and San Diego with
one and three and the Yeah, the standings are always
going to look like this within the first week because
you have teams I've just uh just lost the first
couple of games. You know, teams like Ontario and Coachella
Valley and even Tucson as well, the top three teams
in the division last year, I've all started a little
slower than usual this year. And then the bottom three

(28:40):
teams at least of the playoff picture, I've all started
off hot.

Speaker 2 (28:45):
It's we talked about a lot on the podcast where
it's it's just such a challenging division where everyone wants
to go out to the Sound of California or you know,
southern Nevada or Arizona or whatever. So it's gonna be
it's always gonna be a tough divisions. So if you
have like an off or two, then sudden you're going
to drop a bunch of you here to drop a
bunch of spots in the in the standings. So it's

(29:06):
something that you know, you look at the schedule. I mean,
you look at the standings and two sounds in eighth
out of ten, but it's only four games out of
seventy two. So it's just the small sample size we
put a lot more focus on because at the beginning
season obviously, but really if they went one to three
in January or February or something, it wouldn't be something
we talking about as much. But it's still, you know,

(29:28):
a bit surprising to see the road inners that low
in the in the standings.

Speaker 3 (29:33):
Yeah, that's a that's actually a good point, James, And
I was literally thinking about that last night as I
was going to bed. It was the way that the
only reason the record shows of the stretch that you
have is because it's the first four games of the year.

Speaker 1 (29:49):
But their instances last year.

Speaker 3 (29:51):
Where you know, like you said, middle of January, when
the records are like kind of formatted a little better
with the you know, with the twenty wins or so
that you see to want it, and it's like it
doesn't make that much of a dip on the on
the record. Of course last year there's really no margin
forever for how close to the vision was. But uh, yeah,
for Tucson standpoints. You just uh, you can think of

(30:12):
it as just like a one to three stretch. It
just happened to be the first four games of the season.
And Texas is a Texas is a talented team. This
year they went out and got a lot of great
offensive skill set players and got Cappo Bianco at the
blue line now former Roadrunner that have Cole Lynn, who
didn't really pan out as within the Seattle Kraken organization

(30:33):
as a higher draft pick, but he still has done
a ton of damage in the Pacific Division. And uh,
you know, for Texas, they their their goaltending struggled a
little bit over the weekend too. Again, the road Runs
offense was definitely on point throughout the week and it's
been on point, uh throughout the beginning stages of the season.
As we have a couple of guys who already have

(30:56):
four points in four games with the three way tie.
But for Texas, they could score a lot and I
think their offense was just a bit too much for
the Roadrunners to handle, especially in the late stages. So
you know, it's not like Tucson got swept by a
team who's gonna be bad this year. They got swept
by a team who's gonna be battling for that top
spot in the Central Division.

Speaker 1 (31:16):
Again.

Speaker 3 (31:17):
Texas started off hot last year and then they kind
of collapsed near the end of the regular season. They
still made the playoffs, but they're looking to not do
that this year and keep all of their talent because again,
they had a lot of cops last year too. They
had two of the top scorers in the entire ahl.
They're not with them anymore. But with that being said,
they're just good at also getting talent. I think people

(31:38):
forget how good the Texas Stars really are.

Speaker 2 (31:42):
Yeah, you man, I was gonna mention that last night.
I forgot a nice You mentioned Kyle, their former road
under played. Let me see one two our five seasons
scores with thrown under starting with that inaugural twenty six
ten or seventeen year. He had a point on, had
assist on Friday and Saturday and assist on so nice,

(32:04):
kind of nice homecoming for him to get back and
you know, come back in there and do well against
his whole team.

Speaker 3 (32:14):
Yeah, and again, Texas is just fully loaded with talent.
They've had a nice start at three to one. They
got the kind of revenge sweep on the Roadrunners two
so did plenty of damage against the.

Speaker 1 (32:26):
Central Division last year.

Speaker 3 (32:27):
But start things off, we have Milwaukee Texas and grad Rippons,
Grand Rapids Griffins all starting at three and one each.
As for the Roadrunners, like I said, the offense has
been there. We have three guys with four points already
on the on the year, with Agazino had two goals
and two assists, Aku Ratu had two goals and two assists,
and then Igor sokol Off at one going three assists.

(32:49):
Of course, as we mentioned before too under Jordan Maverick
Lamaru each at three points to start the year. Hunter
drew just quite an amazing start for his first two
games of the year. Steve poffin just talking about the
maturity of him and what he was able to accomplish
after sitting out the first two weeks of the season.
We're gonna try to get him on the Tucson Roadrunners

(33:11):
Happy Our show this week as well because it's his
birthday week, so some exciting things to come there.

Speaker 1 (33:17):
But James, overall, it was it was a good first.

Speaker 3 (33:20):
Week to kind of open up the season, and when
we were cut off of our podcast, last night we
talked about, you know, just how busy it's been with
the face Off Gala and opening red carpet, and then
throughout the whole opening weekend, you kind of forgot a
little bit about the the fan fest, which was a

(33:41):
couple like a couple of weeks beforehand, and you forget like, wow,
things really got to start off with the fan fest.

Speaker 2 (33:47):
Yeah, it's funny. I was listening off the things. I
was like, Yeah, one of the cool things about the
row Nners is compared to other teams I've covered that
they have so many cool events like the gala and
then the red carpet, and then you know some cool
giveaways on Saturday and Sunday, you know with the with
the Rally Town Saturday and the Magnet on Sunday. And

(34:07):
then I was like, wait, and what was the thing
couple weeks ago? I couldn't remember what the FanFest because
I was I was looking down and I was thinking
about like how the Sandrad pulled back and how I
was walking to the skating on the ice and meeting them,
meeting a couple of players and going to the Jumpy
Castle and stuff like that. My nephew really liked the
Jumpy Castle and he wanted to skate, but he's only three,

(34:28):
So my sister's like, maybe maybe not at that time.
But he was funny that there's just so many events
you guys have that I was like, oh, whoops, I
couldn't think of that. They couldn't think of what that
event was.

Speaker 3 (34:39):
Yeah, and you know, it feels like you have the
games on the road to start the year for the
road Runners, but hockey season, yes, it technically started that
past week, but you feel like the season has really
started out now that we got all the home opening
festivities done and complete, and it was just great seeing

(35:01):
all the fans back with kind of getting that fan
and player connection back as well. And now you really
feel like, Okay, we're we're in and now we're four
games out, Math on the air, sixty eight games more
to go, and you know, we're getting deep into it now.
We're starting to find out who the star players of
this team are so far and again Matverick Lamber and

(35:24):
Hunter Drew instantly making marks throughout this past weekend, with
Hunter Drew even missing the first two games of the season,
and he's a guy who continues to do damage for
the Roadrunners with the nine points in the last nine
games of the year last year and getting that playoff goal,
and now he has three points in two games, and
you know, he's just another excited guy to watch for

(35:46):
this upcoming weekend against Bakersfield, a guy who is most
definitely going to help the Roadrunners try to get that
sweep and get back to five hundred.

Speaker 2 (35:56):
Yeah, it's a it's a team that they have so
many options. I talked we talked to Steve that where
going in the series, the leaders all had two points
a piece, and now you have another series where there's
so so balanced and so you know, the Runners so
balanced and scoring and so many I mean, you saw me,
I'm getting his first goal Google over the weekend. Something

(36:18):
that when they're doing you know, they get that split
in Colorado, you can't expect someone like him to score more.
So it's it's impressive to see that they're able to
hold up and almost get those wins against Texas and
get that split in Colorado even though they you know,
it didn't have a dominant score kind of but in
a way, that's you know, I think that's a good

(36:40):
thing that they have so much talent, so much so
so balanced, and they have so many guys. They have
a good mix of those young prospects we talked about
and the little older guys like like r Russo and
Hunter and you talked about they're the team that just
seems really well constructively well balanced like that.

Speaker 3 (37:00):
Yeah, and it is becoming more of a balance now.
Talked about Josh Done and Dylan Gunther, who were kind
of the two main prospects of the team, Josh Dolle
getting the twenty six goals and Gunther, you all playing
a smaller handful of the games, but you know what
he's been able to accomplish now and what he's doing
in the NHL with that eight year extension. But this

(37:21):
year it's kind of it's definitely a lot more balanced out.
We had a very young team last year. This year
we have much more veteran presence. We have guys who
are in the twenty four to twenty five age range
but who have played in multiple seasons now, so they're
kind of those they're still young, but they're technically veterans.
Kind of thig and you know, every time you kind

(37:43):
of look at the the roster sheet and the stat
sheet of the team, like Wow, it's definitely a different team.
It's nice having the main faces back, but you know,
and when it comes to a different team, it sometimes
takes a little bit of time to kind of get
things flowing. The offense has definitely been there, but the
defense to play and just kind of you know, playing

(38:03):
more safer with the puck is uh, it's something to
work on, and that's okay.

Speaker 1 (38:06):
It's the beginning of the season. We have sixty eight
games left.

Speaker 3 (38:09):
There's plenty of time to get those fixed, and it's
gonna start with Bakersfield this weekend.

Speaker 2 (38:14):
Yeah, there's Yeah, going back to what I said about
the stats that I locked it up, and there's eleven
guys that have multiple points already so far, and you
have andreug Asino with four points and Hockey with four points,
and you go or four points, but then you have
four guys to three. So it's really balanced, and really

(38:36):
that offense is doing all these need to kind of
throw things up on defense. But they had a great
palm kill, so that's that's impressive. And and they've had
good goaltending, even though maybe it hasn't really shown up
as much in the stats, but it's something that they
could build on and builds, builds from the back out
like that.

Speaker 3 (38:55):
Yeah, no matter how every game goes, no matter what
the record is, there's always games to build up, and
that's what the Roadrunners are going to try to do
this weekend to get back to five hundred against a
tough opponent of the Bakersfield Condors.

Speaker 1 (39:08):
James, thanks for joining me again, folks.

Speaker 3 (39:11):
If you're confused on just how this podcast was formatted,
we recorded the first half at the arena and then
