On this week's show, Adrian Denny and Jonathon Schaffer talk to fourth-year Roadrunner Ben McCartney from his family farm in Manitoba early in the morning. They discuss his leadership on the team, his time in the Juniors and training camp and how his summer on the farm is going. Adrian gives McCartney a Buzzfeed quiz on a new hobby to pick up and the guys later draft their favorite cookies and who would most help the Roadrunners win in a shootout.

Tu Sun Roadrunners Insider Podcast. Ben McCartney is with us.
The early bird gets the worm. Benny, welcome back to

(02:14):
the podcast. How's it going pretty good?

Speaker 4 (02:16):
Guys, Thanks for having me.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
Yeah, thanks for coming on. Nine am back where you
are in Manitoba? Johnny? How many minutes have you been awake?

Speaker 2 (02:26):
Twentyt thanks forty? Yeah yeah, well initially welcome at six
thirty and then I was like ten more minutes. Everything
was already set up. So yeah, yeah, I'm good.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
Never won to brag, but I had a four to
forty five alarm five o'clock workout. I'm back full moon.
Saw a rattlesnake in the canyon. This morning, I saw
a roadrunner. I need to Wikipedia this because the roadrunner
came flying out of a tree, so I need to
figure out what was up with that? Is that normal?
Never never seen an airborne roadrunner before. I don't think

(03:00):
I have either, outside of Benny when he goes flying
into the net to score the empty netter.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
Right, yeah, oh yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
What are you up to this morning, buddy?

Speaker 4 (03:13):
Well not too much this morning, okaup Like an hour ago,
made some breakfast, then got this, then work and drive
to Brannon and then just do my usual just workout
and skate tomorrow, just like some routine work this whole summer.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Pretty much. That's it.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
What'd you make for breakfast? What's what's starting you off?

Speaker 5 (03:31):
Go to or just like a few eggs and then
just make a smoothie and pretty much it's pretty late
for breakfast.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Yeah, breakfast smoothie. I think it's my favorite thing ever
after a workout. Make it the night before, some bananas,
some frozen fruits and protein powder.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Oh yeah, my favorite, my favorite. Howd how do you
do the eggs?

Speaker 5 (03:55):
I always do them over medium, over medium, like a
little water though. Yeah, and then put a lid on.
It cooks itself. It's kind of nice.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
That's good.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
That's good, Johnny. How do you do your eggs? You
do a lot of breakfasts.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
I've been doing my eggs all kinds of ways, but
I like sunny side up. I like it all runny. Yeah.
And then if I have time because this one takes
a little longer, I like boil. I like boiling my eggs.
And then I make into an egg salad with like
spicy mayo and all kinds of other seasonings and stuff.
So wow, and yeah, I've been kind of experimenting with
that lately too. Yeah. Johnny's big in the kitchen. Yeah, yeah,

(04:32):
you get from my mom. I get it from my mom.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
And he won't hesitate to make a thirty two ound
steak at ten am if he feels like one on
a Thursday.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
That was after that was after our first playoff game,
and you know, obviously it was our first playoff game,
or at least my working my first playoff game. So
it was a lot to get done. And I just
I just wanted to steak the next morning. Just it
just felt right, you know, I said at the age,
I'm like, this is what I'm cooking right now. Man
always does. I came into the office that day too.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
Get in the office for three hours, but finished making
your steak and enjoy it. Yeah, Betty, let's start you
off with rapid fire. We'll give you a word, a noun,
a verb, an adjective. You describe it in one word
or one sentence, and we'll have.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
A good time. You ready, okay, Okay, here we go.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
I'll go first, and then Johnny you'll take up with
with his The farm McDonald Manitoba Home, Portage, La Prairie
Manitoba Memories. Tucson hot the first new person you met
when you got to Tucson. Carconi, the first person you
met that you'd eventually be with in Tucson. So somebody

(05:44):
that maybe you knew before Key Big first Pro goal,
Texas first Pro Hatrick, Texas Texas Stars.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Yeah, Matt walta.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
Space cadet, favorite cookie.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
Chocolate, take a shot in the shootout or pick another
teammate teammate branded Wheat Kings.

Speaker 4 (06:09):
The best.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
Favorite NFL team if you had one.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
No, I don't watch football.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
The number twenty two to too. Favorite after practice snack
Smoothie the Pacific Division, Tough Jake Wagman, Smart, Kim Coda,
Robliz Smart favorite shoe brand Commerce being named an alternate
captain last season. Honored pancakes or waffles.

Speaker 4 (06:37):
Pancakes.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
All right, there we go. We did it a benny,
he said, just got the routine. Tell us about tell
us about the routine. Another summer on the farm and
what you've been up to.

Speaker 5 (06:50):
Yeah, like the first couple of months when I got back,
I haven't been really skating, So I was just out
on the farm the whole time, helping my dad and
then working out in the morning, and you know, it
was good. But now just kind of wrap it up
before the season, then driving down a brand and during
the week that's where I used to play junior hockey.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
How far? How far A drive is that again.

Speaker 4 (07:10):
It's about an hour fifteen.

Speaker 5 (07:12):
I got a place to stay there, so it's just
kind of nice staying there during the week and then
go back home to the farm on Friday and then
just do a few chores here and there and then
baby see some friends some nights and yeah, it's been good.

Speaker 4 (07:24):
Summer's been going.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
My fast refresher memory on the farm, no farm animals.
You're an hour and ten minutes away from a city
that has a hockey team called the Brandon Wheat Kings.
So you're the weak king? Are you the weak king?
What else is going on on the farm?

Speaker 4 (07:41):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (07:41):
Like all right, now we're getting ready for harvest, so
it's kind of like the best time of the year.

Speaker 4 (07:46):
So it's gonna get pretty busy. But you know what
I do, just do all like the like the bottom
of the totem pole, like all that work.

Speaker 5 (07:53):
Like I clean bins, Like on Friday was cleaning bins,
and I don't know, I have bowl the grass and
then sometimes my dad will hug asked me to go
in the tractor, like if it's seeding or maybe like
this this month in harvest. But other than that, I
kind of do what my dad tells me, and you
know what, he's my boss, so I just listened to him.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
Dad's Dad's always get his point in the right direction.

Speaker 4 (08:15):
Oh yeah, yeah, he's been.

Speaker 5 (08:17):
He's been good to me, even though he's been obviously
we have our battles here and there on the farm,
but it's good.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
I missed those. Benny, your named an alternate captain for
the team last season. Just how big of an honor
was that for you? You know what it was?

Speaker 5 (08:32):
It was really cool, you know, just being able to
with that group of guys, or could have been about
twenty different ones, so you know i'd be a named one.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
It was.

Speaker 4 (08:40):
It was very I was honored.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
It was cool.

Speaker 5 (08:44):
But at the same time, you just got to keep
being yourself and not change the way you are, and
you know, there's there's It was really cool being able
to lead those guys.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
Yeah, and you had some injuries last season too, so
you know, while you're off the ice trying to get back,
how are you still trying to be a leader of
the team.

Speaker 4 (09:02):
Well, it's usually just putting, like the putting in the work.

Speaker 5 (09:07):
On the other side of things, when guys aren't looking,
when people aren't looking, I think that's like the biggest thing.
It's just putting in the work and you know, just
making changes at the same time. So just trying to
improve as a human being every single day. And yeah,
it's it was a tough season in some aspects last year,
but you know, it doesn't it doesn't kill you, make
you stronger.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
So yeah, and Kim asked Cameron he Big this last week,
and I thought it was a really good question. You know,
it's funny because you guys are you're young hockey players still,
but you've been in professional hockey for so long already
you're starting to become kind of leaders of the teams,
and you know you're considered veterans. So you know, Cam
said he's met guys from past teams that have helped

(09:49):
him kind of set examples for younger players or the
new guys on the team. So you know, what, what
examples are you going to try to set for the
new guys for the upcoming season.

Speaker 5 (09:59):
Just just like the culture and Tucson, I think I
think every single year I've been playing here, I think
it's been getting better. So I think the way we're
building a strong connection throughout that lockero and we have
a lot of guys coming back from last year, I think,
I think we'll have a great culture and just kind
of setting the tone and you know, and personally just

(10:21):
trying to improve myself every single day and make improvements
and then usually that helps kind of that affects the
rest of the team.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
Benny, You've seen a lot of cultures built just with
with the teams you you've been with. I imagine, right
you were with Brandon for five years and entering your
fourth year with us, and and being with with teams
over the course from year to year to year, you
get to be a part of building it and growing
and and showing others the way. And it was that

(10:53):
way in Juniors, and it's been the same here with
with you and the Roadrunners.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (10:59):
You know, like Junior has kind of been like the
same kind of same kind of process as Pro because
at the start we they kind of like were like
kind of rebuilding in a way, and then by year
four we were we were one of the better teams
in the league and Junior, So I find that's what's
happening here. I know it was it was tough, tough
taste in our mouths. Yet last year losing the playoffs

(11:21):
first round. But that's just gonna make us stronger coming
in for this year.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
Yeah, hungry, and and you look at the jump from
year to year. It was a huge regular season jump,
going from seventh place to second place, biggest win improvement
in the league. And this year is okay, second place
to first place, and we make our playoff run exactly.

Speaker 5 (11:47):
Just gotta take a day from day and we know
what to do to win hockey games.

Speaker 2 (11:50):
Now.

Speaker 5 (11:50):
We have a lot of guys from that team from
last year, so it's gonna be really exciting.

Speaker 3 (11:57):
You came to our development camps, you know, you get
rafted really young. And how many did you come to?

Speaker 2 (12:02):
Two or three? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (12:05):
Right after right after the draft.

Speaker 5 (12:07):
I think two or three depends how I know. I
missed a couple with COVID, But.

Speaker 3 (12:11):
Yeah, yeah, you got got drafted in twenty twenty. But
it seems like we saw it development camps for you know,
year after year after year, and then all of a sudden,
you know, you're coming into your fourth year pro you
don't come anymore.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
Was it?

Speaker 3 (12:25):
Is it different going home for an entire summer, not
coming back for the for the breakup in the the
two week camp, you.

Speaker 4 (12:33):
Know what, I still feel like I'm young, but U h,
it is definitely different.

Speaker 5 (12:37):
Not I'm gonna consider not really a prospect, I guess
anymore because I don't go on like those camps. I'm
kind of I go right to main camp and I
try to go right to work. So it's you know,
I'm getting old now. So I uh, I'm just saying
time flies by, and you got to take advantage of
your opportunity when when you get it. And you know,
I'm really excited for this year and decided to be

(13:00):
back with well, I guess Utah and Tucson. So it's
it's gonna be fun.

Speaker 3 (13:05):
Who's old or you were? Johnny? Johnny, when's your birthday?
March ninth, March ninth one or two thousand and one.

Speaker 4 (13:15):
Johnny's got me by a couple months, so that's too nice.

Speaker 3 (13:18):
Yeah, I thought you guys were thought your guys were closely.

Speaker 2 (13:21):
It was your birthday last month, right, Yeah, it was nice.
What'd you do? You know?

Speaker 4 (13:26):
I did nothing, I don't think any.

Speaker 2 (13:29):
Work on the worked on the farm, and he got
some practice in.

Speaker 4 (13:32):
Yeah, I guess, yeah, I guess that's where.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
I nice man. You know your family's been able to
come down to Arizona just you know, during the winters
to get to nice weather. Just have they what's that
been like and have they found any cool places to
kind of stay at or what have they liked to
do when when they're down here.

Speaker 5 (13:50):
So yeah, when they were down here, they were at
Miracle but staying in a place and my grandparents place
there and you know what Like for for my family,
they're just like my dad, I don't know what it is,
but he just loves back at home, Like he just
loves being around the farm.

Speaker 4 (14:05):
If you go somewhere else, he doesn't like it. So
he was kind of cooped up in the house all
the time.

Speaker 5 (14:09):
But my mom enjoys the weather and kind of like
seeing a different different areas in the world.

Speaker 4 (14:15):
And I think she enjoyed it. But other than that,
not not too much.

Speaker 2 (14:20):
Are they able to make some games?

Speaker 5 (14:22):
My dad went to a couple, but uh, like last year,
my mom couldn't make it out because she's a school teacher.

Speaker 4 (14:28):
So it's kind of tough for during the during the
school year.

Speaker 5 (14:31):
But maybe this year they'll they'll come out a little
bit more watch some games.

Speaker 3 (14:38):
I don't think we covered your grandparents have a place
in Maricopa.

Speaker 4 (14:43):
Yeah, yeah, they do. They one a few years ago.

Speaker 2 (14:45):
Oh that's awesome.

Speaker 5 (14:47):
Yeah, I know, it's nice nice having them close by. Yeah,
that's sound retired so with their friends.

Speaker 3 (14:53):
Yeah, that's not not bad at all. It's a great
place to to come down and enjoy and get away.
And I'm sure they were really hard to get to
a point they could come down and hang out in
Arizona during the winners.

Speaker 4 (15:06):
Yeah, I know, I'm happy for them. It's nice seeing
them throughout the year.

Speaker 2 (15:10):
Benny, you've been to your entering entering another season with
the road Runners, and you know you've been here for
a while now, you've played a lot of games here.
But how great was it to see white out Tucson
for the first time in your career here and you know,
just getting that second place spot in the Pacific Division
and getting see all the fans out there in the
white outs, you know, playing those two playoff games, you

(15:31):
know we fell short, but we still got to see
it and now we can potentially see it next year too.

Speaker 5 (15:37):
Yeah, you know, it is cool to see two sun
come out for those games. And yeah, a little lot
of energy in the crowd, but I wish I was
in those games, so I don't it was it was
really cool to see every all those fans. But yeah,
hopefully this year we'll well when we do it this year,
we'll get to see them again for a longer period
of time.

Speaker 3 (15:57):
And you'd look at the division this year plays last
year Coachella Valley, I think they lost their top nine scores.
I don't know if that's scientifically proven. It's just somebody
said it and I haven't double checked it. But you know,
going into this season, we've we've got to be the
favorites in the division, and I think we really embraced

(16:17):
that like we did last year when we were fighting
for first place with with Coachella Valley. What do you
think the next step is for us as a group
to to do what we want to do, win that
division and make a good playoff run.

Speaker 5 (16:31):
Yeah, they're just like short term memory. Like we lost
a few guys too, but we out of some guys,
so I know last year it's but a difficult taste
about tasting our mouths after playoffs. But we know what
to do. We know how to win hockey games. That's
not the problem. So we just got to start on
time this year, and I know we will be in
But at the same side of things, there's gonna be
teams that are hungry in the division that weren't good

(16:52):
last year, So you can't take any game for granted.
Coachella the same way, like a bunch of hungry guys
on that team trying to make a name for themselves,
and they're gonna be tough to play games. So just
gotta worry about ourselves at in October, then just start
to start strong.

Speaker 3 (17:13):
Who have you lived with the last couple of years here?
I don't think we ever talked you about any roommates
lived with.

Speaker 5 (17:19):
Last year I lived with Cross and Gunther, and the
year before I was with Nathan Smith and Will Riley.

Speaker 4 (17:29):
So that's some characters.

Speaker 3 (17:31):
Yeah, you've you've you've taken taken in a little bit
of everything.

Speaker 5 (17:36):
Yeah, well, Gregor McGregor my first year, Yeah, it was
i'veout a few good guys, good characters.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
What about roommate on the road Douglas Curtis, all right,
ugets you get You get him on the road and
McGregor gets him at home.

Speaker 4 (17:52):
Yeah, oh yeah, no, it's it's good. We have a
good system going on.

Speaker 5 (17:56):
We like the room pretty cold, so it's cold.

Speaker 3 (17:59):
What about uh, what about the blinds? Do you like
to wake up with the sun or do you like
the blinds just shut pitch black at all times? It
always seems like sleeping.

Speaker 1 (18:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (18:10):
We we usually put like that hotel hanger on. There's
zero light in that.

Speaker 3 (18:15):
Room, so yeah, I can I can see that. That's
what I that's what I picture. I love sunlight. I
love to wake up to the to the sun. Hence, Johnny, well, you.

Speaker 2 (18:29):
You closed when we when we're rooming on the road,
you you close the shades for me. So yeah, I
do it for you.

Speaker 3 (18:35):
I I care about you because you get you still
get up earlier than me on the road too.

Speaker 2 (18:40):
And I even hear you leaving to go do your workout,
I'm like, oh, man, and used to be sleeping.

Speaker 3 (18:45):
You wanted to be enjoyable for you, Benny, We've got
a special surprise at the end. But in the meantime,
do you have any questions for us?

Speaker 4 (18:55):
No? This is this has been great.

Speaker 2 (18:58):
Yeah, pleasure having you.

Speaker 3 (19:00):
It's been Summer's gone fast, I guess because it's August
nineteenth and we're getting you on the podcast for the
first time.

Speaker 2 (19:09):
So glad to have you.

Speaker 3 (19:11):
A couple of weeks ago, Kim started giving guys these
BuzzFeed quizzes. I don't know if you've ever seen him,
but it's just a lot of questions and then they
tell you something about yourself, like personality quizzes. A couple
of weeks ago, we gave Travis Barn a quiz to
decide what crumble cookie he would.

Speaker 2 (19:33):
Order, etc.

Speaker 3 (19:35):
So this week your quiz is customize an ice cream
Sunday to your liking to find out what hobby you
should take up, so maybe we can find you second, third, fourth,
fifth hobby to get involved in.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
How's that sound? That's good?

Speaker 3 (19:50):
Yeah, okay, here we go. What will you build your
Sunday in a cone, a cup, a bowl or banana
split style? Okay, there's all these pop ups and stuff
and not sure.

Speaker 2 (20:05):
Okay, here we go.

Speaker 3 (20:07):
Pick your first flavor vanilla chocolate, strawberry or milk chocolate
chip chocolate. All right, so Johnny, you click these and
you have to scroll down. It doesn't take you to
the next one. That's what I forgot from the worst. Yeah,
that's the worst. All right, Pick another flavor chocolate chip
cookie dough coffee cake batter or Rocky.

Speaker 2 (20:25):
Road cake batter. Oh yeah, I like that.

Speaker 3 (20:32):
Love cake batter. Pick a topping chocolate, chips, gummy beerries,
gummy worms or marshmallows.

Speaker 4 (20:38):
Marshmallows, okay.

Speaker 3 (20:42):
Pick another topping, sprinkles, nuts, coconuts, cereal sprinkles.

Speaker 2 (20:47):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (20:48):
Pick a fruit, strawberries, blueberry, raspberries.

Speaker 2 (20:51):
No fruit.

Speaker 4 (20:54):
On this sprobably no fruit?

Speaker 2 (20:56):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (20:58):
Pick a sauce, hot fudge, strawberry, butterscotch, caramel, got.

Speaker 4 (21:04):
A lot of chocolate on there, a little caramel.

Speaker 2 (21:06):
Okay. We're trying to imagine what this ice cream looks
like in my head right now.

Speaker 3 (21:10):
I know it's looking good.

Speaker 4 (21:13):
It's like by cold Stone order.

Speaker 2 (21:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (21:19):
And finally, pick an extra topping of your what is it,
the biggest one that gotta have it, gotta love it? Cherries,
whipped cream, wafer sticks, no extras.

Speaker 4 (21:32):
A little whipped cream.

Speaker 3 (21:34):
Okay, wow, okay, here it comes. All right, We've got it.
So just to I'm gonna see if I can reset
what Benny has on is. No, I can't wipe everything away,
but Benny.

Speaker 2 (21:48):
Good news.

Speaker 3 (21:49):
Your new hobby is pottery. Your ice cream. Sunday Preferences
suggest you would excel in a creative hobby. Pottery will
allow you to detach from the world and mold your
amazing ideas into beauty for clay pieces. The hobby will
match your artistic spirit and allow you to create pieces
that are uniquely yours.

Speaker 4 (22:07):
I don't think you're going to catch me in the botteries.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
Take the team out to a pottery class one day.
I'd be fine. I find it.

Speaker 4 (22:15):
I get fined if I.

Speaker 2 (22:16):
Do that bonding exercise people who.

Speaker 3 (22:23):
Very very classy, talented people of course.

Speaker 2 (22:26):
Oh yeah, yeah, no way, it's a lot of patients
because you're just sitting there. Whoever, I don't even know
how long they do it for.

Speaker 3 (22:35):
Your hands get dirty. Yeah, got to put it in
the oven.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
You put in the oven, that's what. Yeah, you put
it in.

Speaker 3 (22:42):
The oven to don't put it in your oven at home, Johnny.

Speaker 2 (22:45):
Okay, that's what that was confusing me. I'm like, you
put in your oven at home, special special ovens for that. Okay, good,
I'm glad you told me that before I went to
go try pottery for the first time.

Speaker 3 (22:56):
Yeah, or Benny, our little secret. Uh go have a
great your day. What do you got going on the
rest of the day.

Speaker 5 (23:03):
You know what, after this coffee, I'll just go outside
and go see my dad.

Speaker 3 (23:10):
Is it a nice, nice, sunny, crisp morning up there.

Speaker 4 (23:14):
It looks beautiful out here today. A little smoky because
of forest fires.

Speaker 2 (23:17):
But yeah, looking pretty.

Speaker 4 (23:21):
It's never a bad day out here.

Speaker 3 (23:23):
Hey, here's here's one for you, so we can go down. Like,
you know how stuff is these days with geo targeting
and just being able to see who's clicking and downloading stuff.
We have a podcast listener and we haven't got any
downloads this summer, but during the season we'll get podcast
downloads from McDonald Manitoba. Any idea, any idea who that

(23:47):
could be?

Speaker 4 (23:48):
You know what that could be?

Speaker 3 (23:50):
That's where your farm is, right mcdonaldh.

Speaker 4 (23:52):
That's that's where it.

Speaker 5 (23:53):
Well, it would it could be my my family, but
I think I know it's gonna be one of my buds.

Speaker 2 (23:58):
Okay, I'm listening. Oh, I love that.

Speaker 3 (24:03):
What's his name? Let's give him a shout out.

Speaker 4 (24:05):
Shout out here.

Speaker 2 (24:06):
Yeah, I'll get it.

Speaker 4 (24:08):
Garrett malle Garrett.

Speaker 2 (24:10):
Mallie, thanks for listening. Garrett, Yeah, thank you man. Thanks
for listening to the podcast.

Speaker 3 (24:14):
Thanks for liking, downloading subscribing and leaving us a five
star rating, especially for this episode with Ben McCartney. Benny,
thanks for joining us man, have a great rest of
your day, your summer, and we'll see it camp real soon.

Speaker 4 (24:28):
Awesome, guys. Yeah, thanks for having me.

Speaker 2 (24:29):
That was fun. Thanks a lot, Thanks Benny, nows guys,
take care.

Speaker 3 (24:34):
Ben McCartney, bright and early. Johnny joining us here on
the podcast. He texted me on Saturday said, nine am
Central time work. So he's trying to massage it like
nine ams Central time, since it's not like seven am
Arizona time. Like, yep, that works. I texted you yesterday,
Ben McCartney seven am. I knew you'd be there. We

(24:58):
had a dress rehearsal earlier this summer when we talked
with Peter Dilatory. I think we were going to tape
that one at seven thirty Arizona time, which is like
twelve thirty pm wherever he lives New Brunswick, Nova Scotia.
It's way the heck Northeast Canada. But then we got
all set up. Johnny got up, he was there at seven.

Speaker 2 (25:21):
I got up. Peter texted me, I'm helping my buddy
with my boat. Could we do it later, yes, and
Nova Scotia problems with boats. Yeah, Johnny, Peter just rescheduled
and you're like, oh, Peter, Peter, I got up at seven, Peter,

(25:41):
you had me waking up early. Man. Ben McCartney was
right there, Texas, right at six fifty nine. He joined
it there, joined it, texted me at.

Speaker 3 (25:49):
Six thirty eight thirty his time, and confirmed that he'd
be there to go. Great to catch up with Benny.
We love our trips up to the farm, Johnny.

Speaker 2 (26:00):
Yeah, it's it's always good when these guys have things
to do in the off season.

Speaker 3 (26:05):
Where we have a loyal podcast listener, Yes, McDonald Manitoba.
There's some spots because we check this stuff. You know,
it's a it's a world of analytics McDonald, Manitoba. We
have a diehard listener in O'Fallon, Illinois. Every week we

(26:26):
get our one download from o'fallen Illinois. Where else do
we get some good ones? We get some Las Vegas.
California's sprinkled about. You know, it's California, so they're they're
a little flaky. It's not every week, but we get
we always get California. It's just different places in California.

(26:46):
Oh gosh, we get some some.

Speaker 2 (26:48):
Rural New York with Robbie Russo.

Speaker 3 (26:51):
We got a lot of Chicago for the last month
with Austin mcganski, a lot of Minnesota.

Speaker 2 (26:58):
We've got our We've got our pockets.

Speaker 3 (27:01):
And of course, uh Tucson in Arizona is is eighty
to ninety percent of it. First thing we came out
of the gate with Benny, it was me. You know,
I work out, Johnny, and I will tell you about it.

Speaker 2 (27:15):
I will tell you that I work out, right, Yeah,
it would give you the times you should so I
work out. Yeah, I just help you about it. Yeah,
nothing wrong with that, just.

Speaker 3 (27:22):
To tease you. Honestly, you'd like to sleep in and
you're okay with your workouts. Here's you're okay.

Speaker 2 (27:28):
I do him after work. I do him later in
the day.

Speaker 3 (27:30):
Not first thing. So four forty five alarm. I get
to the canyon. First thing I see. I'm running right
in the entrance of Pino Canyon through the hikers walker's path,
not the main parking lot. I see a roadrunner fly
right out of a tree Atlant I'm like I was
a roadrunner and that thing was flying. We talked about
it with Benny, and so I googled it do roadrunners fly?

(27:54):
And thank you to tree hugger dot com. They tell
us roadrunners are able to fly for short bird, but
do so infrequently due to their oppressive running bully. This
thing was up in a tree flew down, so bread
runners can fly. We learned it today on the podcast
with Ben McCartney. And we took a little bit of

(28:17):
a break after talking to Benny because you talked yourself into.

Speaker 2 (28:23):
A good breakfast. Yes, I made my traditional after all
the breakfast talk with Benny. Sure it did. Made my
made my boiled eggs into an egg salad, just traditional
way to do it. And then you pulled your pottery
out of the oven. I hope not, or I left
it in the Oveneah, I gotta go back home.

Speaker 3 (28:39):
Actually, with all the issues you've had with the apartment,
the last thing is put in a you know there's
something else too, Now, what my sink is clogged?

Speaker 2 (28:49):
That's all that's probably on me, though I probably I
used my garbage disposal, but yeah, I don't know. It's
it's clogged now. So I'm literally gonna go buy that
Dreno and dump it in there and hopefully that the
trainer works, so I'm gonna get the big one. I
usually use a small one for my bathroom sink, but
now I got to use a big one. And I
think it was my fault because I did not know

(29:11):
that egg shells can get caught up in there. I thought, like,
you're supposed to throw eggshells in the trash, which I
googled last time, like why is my why is my
drain like clogged all of a sudden, and they it
said egg shells are a primary reason why, and of
course grease too. But I know not to put grease
in the drain, so I didn't know that either, because
at home, my mom always leaves the egg shells in

(29:32):
the sink and then I, you know, if I've ever cleaning,
I just you know, tuck them in there, turn on
the garbage disposal and damn bam they're done. But I
don't think mine was strong enough. So do you know
what mine is? Do you know how I've ruined dishwash
your disposals? Because you know, I'm such a cook, I'm
so big as a kitchen. Oh yeah, of course spoons.
Oh that's the thing too, I might have I'm worried.

Speaker 3 (29:56):
Hope, hope not because I'm horrible with the cover. Spoons
are falling in right, Yeah, destroyed a couple.

Speaker 2 (30:03):
I'm hoping. Yeah, I'm hoping I didn't leave a spoon
in there that would that would suck. But I don't
think I did, because I don't know whatever's in there.
It's like even when I turn onto Garver's disposal, it's
like shooting out like food and stuff. It's kind of gross.
So we'll handle it. Yeah, So get some draino today
that'll do its job and hopefully have a clear sink
by tomorrow. Do you know what we're gonna start doing.

(30:23):
We're gonna start giving.

Speaker 3 (30:24):
Ourselves the BuzzFeed quizzes. Yeah, and then for that and
then we'll tell the guys we.

Speaker 2 (30:30):
Well we are, and then we'll do it with them
and then see what they get.

Speaker 3 (30:33):
Yeah, because Kim gave me that idea, because then you're
just gonna love this BuzzFeed. They just gave them a
partney and she's like, oh, can I pick one? And
I said sure, Montana's coming on next week. Discover which
endangered animal your personality resembles. Okay, we will take these.
We'll do that and give give the the answers. So

(30:54):
Montana and you Bouji coming up next week on the podcast.
Excited to with your old Barracuda Arracuda buddy, yeahs took
so long to get a San Jose Barracuda. It has
former skater to come on the on the podcast with us.
We had Benny during Rapid Fire and it did his
toe in the water on a couple of topics that
we are going to draft. They were cookie and teammates

(31:20):
that we would put out there in the shootouts. Benny
was pretty modest. He said he would put the teammate
out in the shootout. Let's see, uh pull up the
old UH deal here, I've got UH.

Speaker 2 (31:35):
Shootouts. Ben McCartney. That's funny because I don't think Benny
I'm not sure if he took any shootouts this season,
but I do remember I want to say it was
in San Jose. Yeah, he's never never ton he scored
a breakaway go in San Jose though, he did remember that. So,
I mean, if you want to go with breakaways, he's
won for one. He's never taken a shot the shootout

(31:56):
to my knowledge, but so, I mean, he definitely he
has the hands to do it.

Speaker 3 (32:00):
Yeah, So Johnny and I coming up, are going to
draft cookies and players in shootouts. Looking ahead to the season.
Promo schedule coming soon, preseason schedule, it's coming soon. We're
gonna announce it the day after Labor Day. But we

(32:21):
know what it is. We're just kind of coordinating with
our team here right that we're playing because it's gonna
be a couple of road games that we're gonna play.
Do you know our preseason schedule, Johnny? Yeah, you know
our pre season meant in the email? Oh okay, yeah,
you copied me in the email. So I'm all about transparency.

Speaker 2 (32:41):
I'll be. I'll be like I was. I was literally
home all last week and I saw the email while
I was probably doing something at the I see the email,
so I'm like, oh, I'll just look at it real quick.
And I saw and I was like, oh, great, cool,
that's awesome. So it can be fun paying not yet,
when we can give some we give some tea like
we like teasing stuff our jobs too.

Speaker 3 (32:59):
It's too we usually play the preseason. Yes, going back,
I think we have played them in the preseason. Let's
see we did last year. I remember those year year before,
year before too.

Speaker 2 (33:15):
Did we do it the year before? I don't know.
I wasn't here yet, I remember, I remember, I.

Speaker 3 (33:21):
Remember nothing about October twenty twenty two.

Speaker 2 (33:24):
Yeah, we did. We did, and then the year before
we did, we did a home a home, and then
the year before I think we did two. I don't know.
The COVID bubble.

Speaker 3 (33:33):
It's kind of weird, but yeah, so that the team
we usually played in the preseason, our second closest regional rival.
Do you want to do mileages? But how about this
our closest regional rivals. Brent Farah, a couple of years ago,
writing for the Arizona Daily Star, came up with our

(33:56):
came up with a myleitch chart of our closest regional rivals,
and it kind of changed back and forth. Henderson was
playing in Vegas at the Orleans right, well, they were
playing at the Orleans. San Diego is our closest regional rival.

(34:16):
And then Henderson moved to the Dollar Loan Center. It
changed it and got two miles closer.

Speaker 2 (34:24):
Oh yeah, because they're yeah, Henderson's like kind of south, yeah,
right east, yeah, eas Vegas.

Speaker 3 (34:31):
Yeah, on the mysterious Aisle eleven and then we had
Coachella to the mix. Thank goodness for that, because that's yeah,
three hundred and sixty seven miles to four hundred and
seven miles to Henderson, four hundred and nine miles San Diego,
second closest regional rival, might have.

Speaker 2 (34:48):
Just give it a win team We usually play Henderson.
Do you know if I told you that too. I'm
trying to go to the All Star Game this year.
It's close close, it's I'll be skiing, you'll be skiing.
All right, Well, I will go and I'll go get
some content, do whatever you need to do. John I
will be there.

Speaker 4 (35:08):
You go.

Speaker 2 (35:08):
I do not do not confirmed yet, but in folks,
I'm going to try to gonna try to make it
because why not. It's it's the club, It's it's probably
you know, ever gonna be. That sounds great. Let's get
one and Tucson in a few years. But yeah, and that,
let's let's go do a little road trip.

Speaker 3 (35:21):
For that sounds Great's break my biggest disappointment on our schedule,
Johnny Kim and I went over it when it came out.
Two games in Coachella, I know, and then two games
in San Jose. Who ever did the schedule. It's like,
must hate you. Yeah, Santose is the place you always
you want to go.

Speaker 2 (35:37):
I love go. Yeah, friends, family always there, springs. Yeah,
it's yes, it's a little tough. Instead four separate trips
to Canada. Yeah, okay, perfect road schedules. A little tough,
but like I said, I want to I'm going on
that February long trip during the Gem Show that starts
in San Jose Bakersfield, go to Ontario and then I

(36:00):
think from Ontario to Henderson. Then we go back to
Coachella Valley for one game and then tuson. So just
two one offs in Coachella. So at least we can
take two trips to Coachella. Yeah, so that's that's the
bright side of it. But uh yeah, so far that's
the only road trip I will be going on. But
it will be a long one so that will be fun. Yeah. So, uh,

(36:20):
I can't wait, can't wait, can't wait, getting so close?
Get us to the Gems show, get us. Yeah, once
you're at the Gems, we love, we love, we love
gems and minerals just as much as we love pottery. Podcast.
Don't put the gems in the oven either, or don't
use the regular oven, just one of the same. And
you know when you're in the Gem Show trip, you're
in just like you're in the bulk of the season.

(36:41):
That's February. So yeah, before we know it, we'll be there.
Agent we'll be driving around or busting around or flying
around by that time. It's gonna be great. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (36:51):
So we got that uh preseason schedule coming, promo schedule coming.
I thought it might be I iced to say farewell
to some of our favorites who have departed during the
off season. Betty mentioned it. Some guys move on, some
guys uh that we uh we've added. But I think

(37:12):
the number one person that I want to say farewell to,
uh Camp Karate.

Speaker 2 (37:19):
That was tough. That one's a tough one, Karate, Cam Karate. Yeah,
that's a and you know, like we said, every off season,
you know, people go in get their next opportunity. So
we know we wish all these guys the best of luck.
But yeah, that's a big one. You know, Cam Karate
was just one of those you know, hearted leaders on

(37:40):
the team guys. Yeah, he's a Tucson guy, podcast guy. Yeah,
he's a Tucson guy, a podcast guy. You know, it's
just he's one of those players that's just you know,
business first. He doesn't have to be flashy to be
a good player. You just knew when he was out
there on the ice he was gonna, you know, solidify
himself as a big player for this team. And it's

(38:03):
a big loss. We have a lot of big losses
this season, but we also gained a lot of players
soon and that's just how it goes for every off
season camp.

Speaker 3 (38:09):
Crowdy fourth all time and games played three behind Cameron
Kee Big two hundred and nineteen goes to the Minnesota
Wild organization and it's a good move for cam The
Wild really really thin on d yes, really very very
great opportunity for him. Made his NHL debut last season.
But the NHL opportunity is gonna have them in Minnesota

(38:33):
and our group is really really deep. We say goodbye
to Nathan Smith signing an NHL contract with Vancouver, so
we'll be seeing its eight times Absford, Canada.

Speaker 2 (38:48):
Where are you.

Speaker 3 (38:50):
Nathan Smith? Going to Vancouver. Won't see Stephen Camper. He's
going to the KHL. It's best of luck to him
over there and the k h L.

Speaker 2 (39:00):
That's Russia. Ish did you have a comment? Sorry, I
was waving, oh who walked by MYRSA and back from
their third third trip of the day down to I'm
just gone a lot so people seeming like, hey, look
there is so Yeah, I was giving a giving a wave.
Your friend John Leonard signing with Charlotte that was big.

(39:23):
That's big. That's that's big for Charlotte. That's big for
our penalty shots and our shootout. Yeah, we're gonna draft
guys to take shots and shootouts. John Leonard would have
been first on my list for not anymore.

Speaker 3 (39:35):
Two for two shootouts and one for one on penalty shots.
That's gonna be a big, big offense across the board.
Justin Kirkland going back to the Calgary organization. Him and
Maddy have house in Calgary, so perfect for them.

Speaker 2 (39:53):
Yeah, we'll be seeing him again, see them eight times
eight times. APIs over for dinner seventh seven nights were
in Calgary.

Speaker 3 (40:02):
Let's go to Calgary Ottawa. We've touched on that trade
and Michael Miller signing with Hershey.

Speaker 2 (40:13):
That's a big one. So there, that's a big opportunity. Yeah.
The Calder Cup Champs, did they win it? Yeah, they
want it. They want yes, they want they be back
to back. This time they beat Coachella Valley. I want
to say four to six, yeah, six, Yeah, but all
those games are just as close as the first series was.
I'm not I'm not trying to go into speculation, but gosh,
I mean it was the first time in two seat

(40:35):
straight seasons, seasons we had the same teams in the
Cold Cup finals since like the seventies, right, really or something?
I think so? I think it said the set right. Yeah. Uh,
I'm not saying it's gonna happen again, but gosh, I mean,
Hershey's for sure a team that will make its chance
to get there three times in a row for us.

Speaker 3 (40:54):
Yeah, we've talked about, you know, losing believed to be
their top nine leading scorers.

Speaker 2 (40:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (40:58):
New head coach Derek axe On that guy man, he
was in Texas right, knocked out of the playoffs in
twenty eighteen. Not again really, assistant coach in Dallas is
coaching UH in the Ontario Hockey League Beast a couple
of years. I know him from going back to Idaho

(41:19):
the EHL guy Guys, A Nemesis.

Speaker 2 (41:22):
Guys, Nemesis and he's always with my rival and somehow
someway he has returned.

Speaker 3 (41:27):
Utah, Idaho, Tucsa, Texas, TUSA, Coachella. They're like, like Derek Lackstall,
you won't see it as much here, but because the
coaches that that don't have the bench access just kind
of walk along the glass there. But like there's there's
been buildings that we've played him in where the head

(41:49):
coach just tests, like walk across, walk across the ice,
like literally to get to where they're going. And this
guy like, yeah, he's like six ' five, it's a
big guy like he It's like d' dn't with Derek
Last all walks out on there. They're gonna be uh,

(42:10):
they're gonna be competitive, They're gonna be good. They're gonna
be our our desert, our desert rivals. I'm watching House
Hunters over the weekend, Johnny, and I'm watching Diners, Drive Ins,
and Dives over the weekend. Palm Springs appeared in both.
Oh my gosh, yes it did. Yeah, Palm Springs appeared
in both. And the restaurant looked h looked really good,

(42:33):
and I googled it. It's thirty minutes from where we
stay and so it's it's a ways away, probably not
gonna hit the breakfast spot. So this couple is house
hunting in Palm Springs with a budget of four hundred
and twenty five thousand dollars. And I'm like, well, that's
not gonna fly. No, it's not in Palm Springs. No,

(42:54):
not gonna fly. And so they took them out to
one of the ninety two desert cities where they could
get something a little more affordable. Uh huh, still no, no,
what it wouldn't have flown with me, but with them
they bought a house they were very happy with.

Speaker 2 (43:07):
Wait, so they got a house in Palm Desert. Not
they got it.

Speaker 3 (43:10):
So you know how they have like one of the
desert the one hundred desert cities.

Speaker 2 (43:14):
Oh yeah, okay, yeah yeah yeah.

Speaker 3 (43:16):
Cathedral, yeah, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, yeah.

Speaker 2 (43:22):
Whatever.

Speaker 3 (43:23):
So they took them out to the sticks, to one
of the other desert cities I see, and got them
a place for four hundred and twenty five thousand dollars.
Still not not no, no, didn't fly. It didn't work
for me, worked for them. They were happy. The four
hundred and twenty five thousand dollars doesn't get you anything
in Palm Springs.

Speaker 2 (43:43):
It does. We know that.

Speaker 3 (43:44):
Yeah, I'm watching house watching the house centers. I look
over my mom. She's like, I'm like, yeah, that's not
gonna get them anything. It's just like that's nice, honey,
and fell back to sleep.

Speaker 2 (43:54):
So you're so invested in your mom's just I'm going
back to sleep. The bike bike, Look at that.

Speaker 3 (44:01):
Look at what they're getting. It doesn't work and didn't
work for me, Like, just did it?

Speaker 2 (44:07):
Oh my goodness, didn't work. But yeah. Over the weekend,
saw Palm Springs on a couple a couple episodes of
my primetime viewing House Hunters and Dinners, Drive Ins You big?
Are you big? Alien guy? The movies the franchise. I
saw the new one. Uh, oh my gosh, I forgot

(44:27):
what it's called. Romulus, Yeah, what's that? Watched that with
my parents. My mom is a big she loves horror movies.
But she is a big screamer and she she was
probably the loudest in the entire theater while we were
watching this movie, and I was sitting right next door.
You went to the theater, Yeah, we went to it.
I haven't gone to I've only been to the theater
like twice in the last two years. Saw Deadpool with

(44:49):
my buddy when it first came out, and then now
Romulus because I was just in town. My parents are like, Oh,
let's go. My mom's its just a huge screamer. He's
screaming in my ear, like that's There's some scenes I
jumped to, like I had some jump scares. But uh, yeah,
that was that was the thing, I guess the big
thing I watched while I was home last week. So
that was pretty fun. That's good, that's good. Glad to

(45:12):
have you. Yeah, that's to be back. We thought we
thought it might be me and Kim this week, but
we made it work. We always we always find a
way to Uh. We got Benny at seven am and
it worked out, worked out perfect. Adrian, speaking of coming back,
we had a little encounter with one another on our
way back yesterday on the ten. So you get your

(45:32):
new car, Yes, you're right, yeah, twenty twenty dark gray. Yes,
got it last two mondays ago, so two weeks more
and two weeks ago now or oh yeah, two weeks today,
two weeks ago today.

Speaker 3 (45:47):
So I text you I'm sitting in the Provo Airport
back to Arizona. I text you Ben McCartney tomorrow seven am,
and you're like sweet and driving back right now.

Speaker 2 (45:56):
And I thought, I thought, nah, nah, I don't even know.
I didn't even know you were driving home. I did
not know. I did not know. I thought you're in Tucson.

Speaker 3 (46:08):
So I land at Sky Harbor, get on, get on iten,
and I'm like thinking about it again.

Speaker 2 (46:15):
I'm like, nah, there's no ways, no way it happened.
Where were we probably like Cutcha. Yeah, I want to
say we were about forty minutes from Tucson.

Speaker 6 (46:25):
So yeah, I've got crew set at seventy eight, okay,
and this car I'm in the middle lane.

Speaker 3 (46:37):
This car comes lying up, slams on its brakes. I'm
like speeding them seventy five. If there's if there's a
cop up here, if Wade says there's a cop, boarder
patrol atf.

Speaker 2 (46:55):
What else do we have on that road? Everything? You
don't need to slow down to sixty and and all
of a sudden, my phone rings, Hey is that you do? Not? Like,
what the heck? What the heck are you doing? Is it? Yeah?
Your first considering, You're like, what are you doing.

Speaker 3 (47:14):
Yeah, you slammed on the brakes. There's people behind you,
and we talked for five minutes. You're like, well, see
you tomorrow. It was like, it reminded me of the commercial.
What is it a Jeep commercial where the teenage girl
pulls up next to the teenage boy and their parents
are driving. Yeah, the teenage boys like in a crappy

(47:36):
car and the teenage girls like the cool jepp Yeah,
and then they just the girl just so never saw
you again.

Speaker 2 (47:46):
Yeah, that was it. I'm like, I've driven on that
road with people before, or left within five or the
bus leaves. Yeah, that's one thing I've done.

Speaker 3 (47:58):
If I'm at my cart Sky Harbor and the team
is bussing out, I have passed the bus before. I've
done that, but never with with anybody else that Yeah.

Speaker 2 (48:10):
I so, yeah, I I just didn't. I didn't think
about it because I did not know you were driving home.
I knew one of uh, one of the people in
our offices with us Lake, and I knew she was
driving home. So you guys have similar color. Yeah, yeah,
So when I saw it, I thought it was her
at first. For a second, I was like, no way,
So I start speaking up just to catch up. I

(48:31):
looked at my right and I just see it's you,
and I was like, oh, he's driving home too, and
that make so much more my license plate frame, did
that give it away at all? Plate frame? No, I
did not see that. No, I guess that that didn't
give it away or I didn't see it. But once
I saw it was you, and you have pretty tinted windows,
so I needed to like confirm it was you because

(48:51):
I didn't want you to be some random dude that
just so.

Speaker 3 (48:55):
You you slam on your brake to keep a safe
distancing hall.

Speaker 2 (48:59):
Yeah, because I wasn't gonna just try to be looking
at you like it's that him. And then you look
to your left and you're like and my windows are
now tinted too, and you're like, who's this guy? Because
you haven't seen my new car yet car and so
then and so I was like, all right, the time
to call this guy. I have the Apple Car Play now,
which is very like much more safer as I can,
you know, I can I can just like click a butt,
say hey Siri call Adrian Denny did it right there?

(49:21):
And uh, yeah, that was that. And then I just
wanted to show off how fast my new car, so
I sped off. I zoomed, no, no, yeah, that thing.
That thing goes pretty fast. Has a sport mode on.
It has sport mode. So I didn't put sport mode
right then and there. But I just do it sometimes
if I feel like I need to, you know, just
shift it over real quick and just gets to faster

(49:43):
rpm or gets to its max rpm like quicker. Doesn't
go technically go faster because it just takes longer to
get the rpm. But yeah, really nice car. I'll show
you it later today once we leave the office. But
I'm glad that was the first time you got to
see it on the highway. First time I saw it,
that was That was great. That made my day yesterday.
Just see you on the road. Just where are the

(50:04):
odds of that happening? You know, Just what are the
odds on that? You're you're telling yourself, like.

Speaker 3 (50:09):
Nah, maybe I'll tell Johnny, like I see it.

Speaker 2 (50:13):
Yeah, and then I see the blue car. I'm thinking
it's lake In because you guys both have the same
blue car. I knew she was driving home. I did
not know you were because I just I just didn't
think you were. I thought you were in Tucion. I
didn't know you went back home to Utah. But uh yeah,
it was fun. It was fun seeing you yesterday. It
was unexpected, very unexpected. And then and then the last

(50:34):
thing you said was, well, now we have some talk
about I do on the phone too. I was like,
all right, we'll talk about this on the pod tomorrow.
See you bye. I'm thinking the exact same thing. That
was the first thing. I thought, like, oh, good pod story.

Speaker 3 (50:46):
Yeah, definitely. All right, let's do our draft. Yes, let's
do players to help.

Speaker 2 (50:50):
Us win in the shootouts. Okay, I like it. I
have my on my phone this time because I was
doing it last night while I was laying in bed. Okay,
all right, uh you go, she let me go first.
Last time we did this. Well, then I'm just gonna
take Josh done and slam it your face. Oh my gosh. Actually,
you know what.

Speaker 3 (51:07):
It seemed like he was a lot more than two
for two last year. He did score on a penalty shot.

Speaker 2 (51:11):
He scored on a ton of ton of breakaways. I thought,
yeah he did, or at least like just a lot
of odd man rushes. Yeah, so too. The other way,
that was just his.

Speaker 3 (51:19):
Nackouts and penalty shot and uh yeah.

Speaker 2 (51:22):
Did you have two penalty shots or just one? I
know it one? Just one, okay, just one against stand ose.
So pretty much like just three for three on just
kind of shootout goals. Yeah, insane. Actually, Joshua was actually
my second pick because you gotta go with Matt Piovolalta
for one. He's your goalie, He's gonna face the most shots.
Of course, he's the starter, so he's most likely to
be more in a shootout game. And you know, you

(51:43):
can score all you want, but if your goaltender's not
making the stops, the shootouts is just gonna keep going.
You know, even if the goaltender makes one stop that
can easily win you a game. So Matt, he's my
first pick. Actually, how about that shootout in Oh my gosh,
I was so sad. I was not for that game.

Speaker 3 (52:00):
Right before we went into the playoffs. It seemed like
it went forever, only five rounds, only two extra rounds.

Speaker 2 (52:06):
That was before the All Star break, Yeah, right before
I remember, I was I was at home working the
game and from from me because I didn't go on
that trip, which I wish I did because it looked
so fun. And once we won that shootout, I got
up and I was jumping around my room because it
was just such a good win.

Speaker 3 (52:23):
I just man, that was that was an offensive shootout.
We scored on four of our five. Dan Kirkland Pigansty
didn't score Leonard Unique. We shot first, so Maddi had
to stop cole in to to win the game.

Speaker 2 (52:34):
That he did, they went three for five. Wow, Wow,
that was coo. Yeah that I see that. That's the
thing like that just excites you about the season. Just yeah, no,
especially with Coachella Valley, just knowing that we're gonna have
games like that again, and it just it would take
us back to just those amazing games. Next one for me,
I'm gonna go with one of the new guys and
Dragon Zino twenty six goals last season with the San

(52:55):
Jose Barracuda. Not sure what exactly his shootout stats are
as agents actually pulling it out right now, he's got
him right there, but uh, I mean, you know, twenty
six goals, he has a knack to score, so yeah,
and take him the shootout. Did not take any shots
in the shootout last really, man, maybe honestly, I remember
San Jose being in a lot of overtime games, but

(53:16):
shootouts maybe maybe they weren't in a lot. I don't know.
That's surprising. Yeah, take Andrewragazino as one of my top
guys to go.

Speaker 3 (53:24):
Went three for five And that's weird because Andregazino played
all seventy two games and not take a shot.

Speaker 2 (53:29):
That is leading score. That's strange. Leading that is strange.

Speaker 3 (53:34):
That is strange. Did I take my second pick? I
don't think I did.

Speaker 2 (53:37):
You two? Did I snatch your pick from him? I
just snatched your think.

Speaker 3 (53:41):
For Snake draft in this I will take Aku like
that was one for one and shootout.

Speaker 2 (53:48):
Well, that's okay because he was my he was my fourth.
So yeah, I took yours. But now you can come.
You can go again since I I took your spot.

Speaker 3 (53:56):
Well, Snake drafted here, mom, Mom, I'm still taking John Leonard.
He was on our team last year. Three four okay? Rules,
Oh yeah, there's no rules. There's no rules.

Speaker 2 (54:08):
I'm going with some of the new guys too. Uh.
Next for me, another new guy, Ecor sockle Off, leading
scorer for the Ottawa Senators twenty one goals last season.
Bell Phone centators. Excuse me, h, twenty one goals last season,
twenty one goals this season before nineteen fifteen. That guy
just a goal scorer, So I would I would take
him in the shootout too. All Right, I got the man.

(54:30):
You're good at You're always so good at finding those.

Speaker 3 (54:33):
I've got the daily report from last year.

Speaker 2 (54:37):
You know, if you if there's ever a moment where
he went one for five and shootouts, okay, he got one. Good,
there's ever a moment where I needed you in like
a slide of hand situation, like you know what the
cowboys do when they draw. H I'm choosing you, man,
because you just you just grab you grab the notebook,
you flip through the pages, and you know exactly where
to go. Whereas if I had to do it, it
takes me. I can get to it eventually, but it
just it takes me a little longer. Yeah, thank you.

(54:58):
Especially when you're on the air You're like, yeah, this
guy has uh as many points? I'm like, how does
he do that? Man? Gosh, it's walking watching a master
at work.

Speaker 3 (55:07):
All right, I'm no rules this, okay, apparently no rule
to take the Roadrunners all time leader in shootout goals.
Jordan Gross for.

Speaker 2 (55:17):
Eight, Okay, we like it. We beat who did we
beat that year? In the shootout?

Speaker 3 (55:24):
My first ever Teddy Bear Toss game thing. It was
against Ontario and Steamberg could scored the Teddy Bear Toss
goal and then Jordan Gross wanted the shootout. And our
tweet at the end with the scoring gift was that's gross.
Ye Gross five for eight and shootouts.

Speaker 2 (55:43):
I like it. I'll take him next one for me.
I'm gonna go with the other goaltender for the road
Runners last season, Dylan Wells did not play anything. He
did not He was ready. He was always ready in
the corner there. Yeah, even if your backup goaltenders in
a game and you go to a shootout, you're not
gonna such goalies. You know, you're just going to rely
on whoever's in net to to make the stops. So
I mean, I'm sure Wells was ever in a shootout situation.

(56:05):
He played just fine. So just I'm just taking the
goalies here.

Speaker 3 (56:08):
Okay, I will take our old friend Adam Kracknell.

Speaker 2 (56:14):
Wow Us, Okay, I like it. Take at him. I
like it is. This is our last are the last week.
Next one for me I'm just gonna go with Melish Comen,
just another guy who uh double digit goal scorer, and
I don't think he I'm not sure if he took
any shootouts first he did not, but I don't know.
I just like choosing guys who just have a knack

(56:34):
for getting the puck in the back of the net.
We had a lot of guys with multi digit goals
last season, so I mean, you can go with anyone. Really.

Speaker 3 (56:42):
Yeah, yeah, there's our shootout player draft. You get to
pick the draft next week. You get to do the
two drafts. I picked him this week because you were
on vacation. I'm glad you did, because I was. I
was driving home.

Speaker 2 (56:54):
I'm like getting ready for the podcast, right, I was
driving home. Well, actually I forgot you. You told me
that the draft topics beforehand, but I forgot you had
so I was thinking, like, oh man, we have we
even like chosen at draft topics. And then I remember that,
uh you showed me them all right, which I loved.
I thought those were great. So yeah, good, good, good choices.
All right, let's do our cookie draft. We're drafting cookies.

(57:14):
Cookies love it first. All right, you might know this,
but I'm gonna go snicker Doodle. I love snickers I
one time, but they they did not go well. I
could have made them better. Yeahments they were there were comments.
I think I forgot what the funniest comment in scones

(57:36):
or someone called them scones, somebody question mark, somebody trying
to be nice, like are those scones. That was the
funniest part because they were like, they weren't making fun
of me. They legit thought they were scones. I'm like, no,
they're not scones. They're Snickerdoodle cookies. I think I remember
what I did wrong was uh, actually put too much water,

(57:57):
so then I had to put more flour to bounces it.
And then they just became giant like muffin like cookies.
And then I think I put the cinnamon on too late,
so the cinnamon was just laying on top. It was
just disastrous. I can cook, but I can't bake baking still,
uh still figure that out.

Speaker 3 (58:16):
I'm just gonna cut straight to the chase here. I'm
just gonna say, chocolate chip cookie dough.

Speaker 2 (58:21):
Okay, Yeah, I made brownies. There's no calories. It's all
guilt free on these drafts. Uh huh I made brownies.
Uh before I initially went home and gosh, I was
just gnawing at the batter and it was it was
it was like, uh, it was caramels, dark chocolate, salted caramel,

(58:45):
and like I love I I don't mind dark, like
I like dark chocolate with salt, you know, and then
with the caramel, Oh so good. But I ate so
much of that. But so it's dead like when you're
baking by yourself because there's no one around you to
guilt you if you start eating the battery. Up next
one for me, I'm gonna go more traditional now too.
Oreos oreoles with milk, orioles with milk as a as
a lead. You can have oreoles, ice cream shake, any

(59:09):
kind of style. So uh yeah, Oreos, Okay, let's go.
I'm gonna go with the big sugar cookie with pink frosting. Mmm.
I've had yeah, I've had those big cookie with pink frosting. Yeah.
Back to your oreos. I need them double orriple stuff. Yeah,
the skinny ones aren't, aren't it. Yeah? But then yeah,
now Oreos has like lemon, vanilla, mint, They have all

(59:31):
kinds of flavors now, so pretty good. Another traditional one
chips ahoy okay, yeah, I just like the regular blue,
the blue package, just you know, the more crunchy ones
they have, the soft ones. They have all kinds of
flavors too, but uh yeah, probably just the two top
cookie brands you can get cookies at.

Speaker 3 (59:46):
You know me and ice cream. I'm gonna say an
ice cream sandwich. You need cookies to make ice cream sandwiches.
Give me a couple of chalk with chips and vanilla,
slap them together.

Speaker 2 (59:55):
I like it. Yeah, speaking of ice cream, Paizuki from Ah,
I stole that one from you. Oh you had that night? Yeah? Yeah,
by Zuki go wrong? How about Tuesday's half off for
those I think? Oh good to know Ontario. We are
not paid by b JAS to promote that's my stop
in Ontario after practice.

Speaker 7 (01:00:17):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (01:00:17):
We talked about this with Travis Barron when we had
him on a couple of weeks ago. We had him
did a survey and then we told them what Crumble cookies.

Speaker 2 (01:00:23):
Yeah, you just gotta go crumble anything from Crumble Yeah yeah,
oh yeah, I haven't had Crumbling a long time. So
good please anything? Oh pardon me? Uh, the last one
for me? Uh, have you had those mint Milano cookies,
like the Milano brand. Yeah, they have these mint ones.
I think it's seasonal. I think like during Christmas time
only they're out. Yeah, and yeah, they're just it's just

(01:00:44):
mint flavor and I love mints.

Speaker 3 (01:00:45):
And uh you have those with some milk. Yeah, so good,
so good. Sounds great. My final pick, I'm just gonna
take Christmas cookies. Give me a platter of Christmas cookies
as my neighbor, deliver them over and I will.

Speaker 2 (01:01:00):
It's the similar ones like you said, sugar cookie with
like the strawberry frosting, but then now you have frosting
and so good, yeah, so good. You know my mom
I keep you see, it's my fault. My Mom's been
winding a big cookie so I can bring back for
the office. So Labor Day is the last time I
can do that because then after I'm not going home
for a while. So I really need to remind myself,

(01:01:22):
to remind my mom. She oh, she wants to make
her famous uh Graham cracker chocolate squares with like really good.
So I gotta I gotta reminder or if I forget,
I'm gonna Agent's gonna give me in trouble because now
I just told you so. Yeah, I will ask about
the Yeah, maybe maybe remind me the freeway pass me
a cookie. I will be driving back on Well, I'm

(01:01:45):
leaving at like five. Maybe I'm on Labor Day because
I'm not trying to get stuck in that labor day traffic. Yeah, which,
I'm still super glad that I can go around Phoenix
now on the two too, because I heard yesterday Lake
and got stuck in traffic from uh Mace was it?
I think it was Mesa. Yeah, do you have to do?
You do it through Phoenix. I do. It's fine. Going

(01:02:08):
into Phoenix was a nightmare. Yeah, you saw that. Well
I I got around it luckily, like going into Phoenix
just passed right before Wildhorse passed. Yeah, I didn't. I
didn't see anything. It was smooth sailing for me. But
once I heard that, I was like, gosh, good thing
that was finally open because I used to have to
drive through the Phoenix and that's when it got nightmares.
That's like it adds an hour.

Speaker 3 (01:02:27):
Back in the old days, when we'd go up to
Glendale for hockey games the opposite and work at the
Starbucks from four to six. Yeah, just because if you
leave at three o'clock, you're I left Tucson for an
eight thirty game up in Glendale a couple of years ago.

Speaker 2 (01:02:45):
Got there at nine thirty. It sucks. It's rough, Yeah,
so rough. There we go. I think that's our podcast.
Next week.

Speaker 3 (01:02:51):
On the podcast, I finally got a resolution on my
car that got wrecked. Remember, yeah, right off.

Speaker 2 (01:02:57):
The r that guy with a gun remember that? Yes, yeah,
I finally listened to the podcast.

Speaker 3 (01:03:02):
We have a happy ending for that. I'll give an
update Montana on your boochie. It's gonna stop by. We'll
get him Kims BuzzFeed quiz, Johnny and I will take
that BuzzFeed quiz and uh the rest of.

Speaker 2 (01:03:15):
The news of the day that comes up in the
next next week, next week, let's do it. Can't wait.

Speaker 3 (01:03:20):

Speaker 2 (01:03:25):
