Speaker 1 (00:01):
From road Runners Weekly. This is Between the ben Sites.
You're all access breed. You have the week ahead. We'll
look at the road Runners upcoming opponents, get the inside
story and here directly from the voices and players that
know them best, with your hosts David Moradia, then Patrick
Moore and this week's special guest, the Voice of the
Calgary Wranglers, Sandra Prosina.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Readings, everyone, and welcome to Between the Benches the Roadrunners podcast.
David Meridian alongside Patrick Moore, and we're going to talk
to Sandra Prosina later in the show. She is the
voice of the Calgary Wranglers, kind of a jack of
all trades, an expert you could say, in many sports,
Canadian and American. So that should be an exciting interview.
We'll have that for you in about fifteen minutes. Like

(00:45):
I said, towards the end of the show, are sit
down with the Voice of the Calgary Wranglers. But for
right now, David and Patrick here as we preview the
Calgary Tuson series which starts Saturday at seven pm. That
will be the Roadrunners home opener and Patrick kind of
looking at the landscape of this series. Tucson's one and one.
Two highly competitive games against Ontario Calgary zero to two,

(01:08):
but a much closer game in the second effort of
seven to four loss in the opener where they did
not play well. Simply, they gave up six goals in
the first two periods. The defense obviously just not there.
They gave up forty three shots on goals, so by
all accounts, it was a tough first game for Calgary.
Second game a totally different story and one to nothing
loss where the shots on goal were virtually even. Both

(01:30):
teams around twenty shots on goal, so a more traditional
kind of you know, AHL hockey game. But Colorado again
another top team, kind of like Ontario for Tucson. So
both of these teams were tested. Tucson came out a
little bit better, but anyway, now the stage is set
here for what should be a competitive series. Last year,
the road Runners were three and five against Calgary and

(01:51):
they finished relatively close to the standings. Calgary was a
few places ahead with a winning record of thirty seven
twenty eight, four and three, so just a little bit
better than five hundred. So my question to you, Patrick
is with all that out there, should Roadrunner fans be
confident with this series against Calgary, do you think they
have a you know, a good chance of taking it
or at least splitting you know, where do you see

(02:12):
this series kind of ending up?

Speaker 3 (02:13):
I think a series goes many ways. I think road
Runners fans should be really excited, obviously coming back home
a lot of momentum from last weekend series against Ontario.
But I think the road Runners will definitely have a
chance to sweep or even at least get a split here.
Both teams very even last year obviously, But I just

(02:37):
think I think it's just gonna be very competitive.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
SERI, it's gonna be very chippy.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Both teams love to be in the Pelly box. Calgary
had forty two pena minutes over the weekend, obviously due
to some misconducts, and two signed up to their own
ways with thirty three pena minutes during this.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Now I was talking to James about this on the broadcast.
The penalty minutes thing is, it does get a little
bit distorted because every game you've got and I don't
This isn't a complaint, this is good thing in my view,
But every game you've got, Anya Bucci for a guaranteed five,
maybe even ten minutes for fighting, but that doesn't alter
the game, and I have talked to Steve Popman about that.
He doesn't mind it at all. So, yes, it's thirty three,

(03:12):
but the time they're actually down is a lot less
than that.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
Yeah, I mean, obviously, I think it depends on the
penalties and you know, there could be some fights standing
up for teammates. But I think the main thing is
there were some infractions that the two sound run unders took,
mainly in the Sunday game that kind of hurt them
on the way.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
Obviously, the power play goal by.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
Martin Cromiac really did nail the coffin in for the
two sound unders, I think they've learned a lot, you know,
They've obviously had some good practices and hopefully get a
good sweep this weekend against the Calgary Wranglers.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Yeah. So it's gonna be very important though, because the
penalty minutes are still there. Even though I've tried to
water them down, they still exist. So let's see how
the teams are doing on the power play. Tucson eight
power plays this year. They've scored on three of them,
including uh both they've scored in both games. They have
a power play goal so far in each of their
two games, three for eight overall, so not bad, you know,
certainly a very solid start, even though it's a small

(04:06):
sample size. And then Calgary a little bit of a
cooler start. Eight power plays for them as well, but
they only have one power play goal so obviously just
two games played, just the snapshot of the season, so
I'm sure the numbers will improve for the Wranglers, but
the power play off to a cool start. And I
think the theme for Calgary overall and will certainly get

(04:27):
a better sense of this when we talk to Sandra,
is just a lot of new things going on with
the Calgary Wranglers. I think there's been a good bit
of turnover there. There are still some constant players that
will touch on, but I think generally it's a bit
of a new squad and some of the last things
to kind of click together are the specials, the penalty kill,
and the power play. So maybe that works to the
road Runners advantage. If the Wranglers are still kind of

(04:50):
fine in their footing here, maybe the specials are a
little bit slow and those penalties may not hurt the
road Runners as much and they'll be able to capitalize
on the power play.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
Yeah, I think the Wranglers have had a lot of
turnover the last few years. As you said, I think
the main thing that two song Rudders fans should be
kind of I is the goaltending situation. A familiar face
in Tucson coming back this weekend. I'van Prosvetav, a Roadrunner
from twenty nineteen twenty twenty three. I think just having
that turnover. Yah, Dustin Wolf and Devin Cooley who are

(05:21):
now in the Flame system, who are up in the
big club, and you know, I've been coming back to
North America from spending one season in the RUSS in
the KHL, So I think it's gonna be interesting to see, how,
you know, the road Dunner fans will see a different
Calgary Wranglers team from years past.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
Yeah, and Prosvatov very interesting. So they did not set
him up for success. On the season opener Friday, he
faced forty two shots on Goaldpatrick. I mean that is
just an astronomical number, and six of them did get by.
Like I said, six goals allowed in just the first
two periods. So he saved thirty six of forty two.
But if you cut that half. I mean, it's no
different than giving up three goals on twenty one shots,

(06:00):
which is a pretty standard night out, you know, eighteen
of twenty one. Not great, but pretty normal, you know.
But he faced double the amount of shots. That is
a custom, you know, to a hockey game, really, And
then the second game, say Oh in the probably backup,
certainly the younger goalie of the two twenty one saves
on twenty two shots, so he was brilliant. I think

(06:21):
you'd have to guess the Roadrunners will face both, probably
pros Bits off Saturday, maybe Sayo, and on Sunday. Usually
a back to back, you're guaranteed a goalie change, especially
here where say Owen just played really well. Maybe the
order will even be flipped. But I would expect the
Roadrunners to face both goaltenders. Again, Prosbatov spend some time
with the Roadrunners and many fans are aware of that.

(06:42):
And Sayo in a very young player who I think
has a lot of potential and it's pretty high upside,
so it'll be very interesting kind of a contrast there
between those two goaltenders. Which ones the Roadrunners face and
maybe which ones they have more success with. But certainly
a lot of excitement here for the Calgary Wranglers. You
got to remember again, this is another team that's been

(07:03):
solid in the Pacific Division, kind of middle of the
pack last year, but like I said, a winning record nonetheless,
and the fans I think are pretty tuned into both Calgary,
the Flames and the Wranglers in NL. Ask Sandra about this,
but it's a unique situation with both teams being located
in Calgary. It's a hockey town for sure. We know
how big the NHL and the AHL is up there

(07:24):
in Canada. So I think that both sides are looking
forward to this series here in the Desert.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
Yeah, I think so. I mean when you play in
a historic place like the saddle Down for both teams
and also the WHL affiliate for the for the Calgary Hitman,
I think, I think just playing in that stadium, and
you know, I think same here in Tucson. You know,
just a nice feel where you can get a lot
of people out to the stands and to the games,
and I think it's just a great atmosphere. I've always
wanted to go to southam It's one of my places.

(07:51):
Hopefully before they move into the new building in a
couple of years. I really hope I can be able
to get to the South in one trip. But I
think it's gonna be really exciting for both teams this
weekend and see how the Roadrunners do.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
So yeah, so let's touch on some notes for the Roadrunners,
kind of who's hot, what's keep an eye on. Veteran
forward Kevin Rooney, somebody that Steve Poppin was excited about.
No question, he's looking to extend his goal streak to three.
Because Patrick Key scored goals in both of the first
two games. Obviously the key one in the first game
to send it to overtime, that shot from the corner,

(08:23):
from the corner to the corner of the net. It
was really a gorgeous goal. And then that odd play
early in the game on Sunday where he drew a penalty,
drew blood, a lot of blood, but scored right before
all of that happened. So Kevin Rooney goals in the
first two, let's see if he can score another one
on Saturday. And then of course there's Sammy Walker. Two
goals in the first game. He's looking to extend his

(08:45):
point his point streak. He scored recorded points in both
of the first two games. So that's again same line, right,
Kevin Rooney, Sammy Walker. You know, that's been an impressive
line for the Roadrunners, no question about that. And then
there's Cam he Big. He has another point streak of two,
another one of those players that's gotten off to a
hot start, so see if he can keep history going

(09:07):
and have points in the first three games. But those
are the names we expect, right, I mean, Kevin Rooney
is somebody that people were excited about, like Steve Podvan
as a veteran presence to kind of settle down some
of these younger players. Sammy Walker obviously very impressive up
on that top line, and of course the you know,
constant presence that is Cam he Big. So no surprise
is there. But that's kind of what to keep an

(09:28):
eye on each of them, looking to stack streaks here
early in the season.

Speaker 3 (09:33):
Yeah, I think all three of these players that you
mentioned David had huge impacts in both games. I mean,
obviously Kevin Rooney with that very clutch goal in the
third period I believe was on the power play, you know,
surprise Portillo, and you got Sammy Walker who had two
big goals, one on the power play, and then obviously

(09:53):
that exciting walkoff overtime winner. And then you got cam
Hebig who got a power play goal early in Sunday's
afternoon matchup versus the Rain. I think all these are
players to watch this weekend against Calary, and they're gonna
make a big impact. If these guys can get on
the score sheet early on, I think it's gonna be
a very impressive weekend produce on.

Speaker 2 (10:13):
Yeah, and if it is, indeed, say Owen the young goaltender,
you know, he's somebody that they maybe can capitalize on
his inexperience. And yes, he played very well against Colorado,
but still this is a goaltender with very few professional
starts coming, you know, on the road. Again, they haven't
been home yet to start the season, spending a lot
of time in the States, so maybe some of these

(10:34):
these top two lines. Kim and I spoke to Austin
Paganski on Tuesday. You know, again, he's another player who
has been consistent for the Roadburners, recording a lot of
points both to start this season and at the end
of last year. So you're gonna look for these guys
that have been producing to really keep it running and
maybe possibly jump on some inexperienced goaltending if it is
indeed say oh yeah, I.

Speaker 3 (10:54):
Think honestly, just for all the players we mentioned Paganski,
he big Walker and and Rooney, if they can get
goals early on, they're gonna rattle this young goaltender. And
I just think that Tucson really needs to have a big,
big offense. They obviously had great offensive production this past weekend,
but I think if they can get maybe more than
five goals and raw this goaltender, it'll be a good

(11:17):
It will change the game a lot, but you know,
it'll definitely be chippy if the road Runners will get
up ahead or say that, you know, if the game
goes either way. But I think it's gonna be an
interesting to see how the young goalten will face against
Tucson's big hitters offensively.

Speaker 2 (11:32):
So a couple of milestones. Julian Lutz, if he plays,
and we expect him to play on Saturday, that will
be his fiftieth career AHL game. And Scott Parunovic a
little bit of a different story, but he is just
one game shot of one hundred and fifty career professional games,
one hundred and eight in the NHL, and then Saturday
will make forty one in the AHL or that actually yeah,

(11:55):
so no, no forty two, so that would be one fifty, right,
so both of them again, Peruonovitch will hit one hundred
and fifty professional games and then Loots will hit fifty
AHL games by the conclusion of this series, So that
is interesting. And then there's of course Ben McCartney. He
scored remember to start the season. He's now just one

(12:16):
goal away of fifty career AHL goals and that's certainly
a possibility with the start he's gotten off too.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
Yeah, I think it was a great start for Ben McCartney.
Obviously a veteran presence with this two Soon Runners team.
He's been here for a couple of years. I think
getting a goal from a guy like Ben McCartney can
really help some of these young guys like Owen Alard
who got his first goal on Friday night. I think
they will really juice up this team and give him
a lot of confidence down the line as the season progresses.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
Yeah, and then players who have already kind of hit
some milestones recently, may recall Matthew Volata, he earned his
fiftieth victory as a road runner in the season opener
did look like he was going to get that victory
with about thirty seconds to go, but he ended up
cracking fifty wins with Tucson after the overtime comeback and
that charge at the end of the third period. Owen
Allard he scored his first age old goal ever on

(13:08):
the tenth as well, and then Daniel Boot on Sunday
his first agel point. Remember Boot is playing alongside Walker
and Rooney, so that's a line to keep an eye on.
He's probably been the quietest of the three, but perhaps
the most talented and the most exciting. Still just a
young player at twenty years old, but Daniel Boot on
the board with some points and maybe you know who

(13:29):
knows he might be set to explode here in the
whole opening series.

Speaker 3 (13:34):
Yeah, I think it's just gonna be very interesting to see,
you know, the milestones get hit. Potentially, Obviously, Matthew Waldt
has been here for a couple of years, and getting
his fiftieth win in that type of fashion to come
back whin where they were down three times by one
goal deficits. I think that's just you know, David, I
think it's just kind of a moment where you got
to just kind of look back and it was really lucky,

(13:55):
but they were able to find a way to win.
I think for Valta the way he played, you know,
making some very key save the key moments. But I
think it's just gonna be interesting to see how everyone
will play this weekend. David, I think I think that's
the main me caligary here.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
Yeah. Now there's some new faces here on the Roadrunners,
some young faces, exciting players for the fans to watch,
and I think they're going to be satisfied with the product.
We asked Austin Paganski we being Kim and I on
Happy Hour Tuesday, what we should expect as fans from
the road Runners this season. He said, Look, we're not
always going to be the best team on the ice,
but this is going to be a team that's going

(14:30):
to play hard, give everything that they have, be physical.
And I said, I think that the fans will really
rally around that. That's an identity that usually is very
popular and we certainly expect that from the Tucson Roadrunners.
And they are back at the TCC on Saturday. If
you're not gonna be able to be at the arena
and watch on HLTV on Flow Sports, and you can

(14:50):
always listen on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. All have the
pregame coverage at six forty five. Maybe if you're in
the arena, who knows, you can give it a listen
as well pregame at six forty five, or to talk
to Steve Poppin and Moore. So that's the stage set
seven o'clock home opener against the Calgary Wranglers coming up next,
we are going to talk to Sandra Pusina, the voice

(15:11):
of the Calgary Wranglers. Here on between the benches.

Speaker 1 (15:13):
It's time to go between the benches on Roadrunners Weekly.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
And welcome back to Roadrunners. Between the Benches. We are
now joined by Sandra Prousina, the voice of the Calgary Wranglers.
The Wranglers set to take on the two hon road
Runners this weekend for the Roadrunners. Excusement road Runners home
opener and Sandra, I want to just on a side
note here to begin. Seems like you're very busy between
You've done some Olympics, the Women's World Cup as well,

(15:38):
So A how do you keep everything straight? And B
do you have a favorite broadcasting.

Speaker 4 (15:42):
Memory that's a great question.

Speaker 5 (15:46):
My two favorite broadcasting memories are from the Olympics, so
would probably say Vancouver twenty ten and Sidney Grosby's Golden Gold.

Speaker 4 (15:55):
Just being within the area.

Speaker 5 (15:57):
I was covering women's hockey at that time, but women's
hockey wrapped up at that point, so I was able
to focus on the men's game.

Speaker 4 (16:03):
That was awesome.

Speaker 5 (16:04):
And then I had the privilege of going to London
twenty twelve and covering women's soccer, which was phenomenal because
Christine Sinclair is probably one of my all time top
three athletes, so to see her at her peak was incredible.
And then of course I would be remiss if I
didn't talk about the opportunity with the Wranglers and being
able to work in my home city as a voice

(16:25):
of one of the pro teams here. It does mean
a lot, and how I keep it going is a
really good calendar and not much of a social life evidently, so.

Speaker 2 (16:37):
Definitely you're well organized. And I do wonder this because
just being north of the border, there is a difference
in the sports that the fans in Canada focus on
compared to here in the US. If you were an
American broadcaster. Is there a sport that we have that
you would kind of be itching to do that isn't
really popular in Canada.

Speaker 5 (16:59):
I think I'm really fascinated by the popularity of college
sports there because although university is big here and I've
done Canada West broadcast, it certainly is not to the
level of anything in the NC double A. I watch
some of those volleyball matches with how many people cut,
like thirty thousand, forty thousand people coming to watch and

(17:20):
march madness from both the men's and women's sides. But
some of those niche sports I'm really fascinated by, like
field lacrosse. I would love to see that in person. Right,
we do have box lacrosse here in Calgary the in
the NLL, but to see it at a college level,
I think I'd really embrace that, even track and field,
just college sports, it's a different level. I really respect it.

Speaker 4 (17:43):
I think it's so cool now.

Speaker 3 (17:46):
Sanra obviously, you know you've been the voice of the
Calgary Olders for a couple of seasons now and being
one of the only female commentators in the league. How
has that opportunity been for you and maybe inspire the
next generation of comment, Well.

Speaker 5 (18:01):
There are definitely people before me Patrick that opened the
door and allowed me to have this opportunity. So the
least I could do is make sure I keep that
door open behind me and that other people's can other
women can come through that door. But I think for myself,
it's presenting myself as a very genuine and honest broadcaster.

(18:24):
That's everything that I do on a nightly basis. I'm
certainly not perfect, but I try to be as well
prepared as I can be. Learn about the other teams,
embrace our organization, get to know the players a little
bit better, want to be that storyline, tell her that
bridges the gap from the fans to the broadcast booth
and everything in between. So I don't even think at

(18:47):
this point anymore it's just about being a woman in
the role. It's just trying to be a role model.
I look at my three little nieces and my nephew,
and I just want to be a good person for
them and a good broadcaster for them. And it's certainly
not a role that I don't take seriously. I take
it very very seriously, and I'm privileged to do what

(19:07):
I do.

Speaker 2 (19:08):
Yeah, that's fantastic. So we will pivot here a little
bit to the upcoming matchup between Tucson and Calgary. So
just want to get your sense on this. Calgary drops
the first two games. Was that more of the Wranglers
maybe not performing up to their standard or hey, you're
on the road facing a really tough Colorado team.

Speaker 4 (19:26):
Probably a little bit of both.

Speaker 5 (19:28):
I think the fact that there's been a change between
the pipes is going to take a little bit of
getting used to. This is the second straight season where
the Dustin Wolf era is now over, and last year
started with Devin Cooley as well as vil Terry Ignatchiev.
Both of those goaltenders now gone for the Calgary Wranglers.
So Ivan Prosvetov comes in. He does have Ahlred pedigree,

(19:51):
he's got some NHL experience, but getting used to him right,
and he was in Flames camp for a really long time,
so he didn't have an opportunity, I think to get
to know the Wranglers up to the point that they
should be having that chemistry. For Owen Say, I thought
he was phenomenal in the second game. So he makes
his pro debut, allows just one goal, which unfortunately happens

(20:12):
to be the first shot on net and I'm sure
that was his whoa, I'm here a moment, But after
that he closed the door, and I just I think
it's about chemistry. When you have NHL camps in the
same city as your AHL team, you don't get the
players right away right those cuts aren't made right away,
So I think building the chemistry will help. I do

(20:33):
like that they're starting on the road, though. You talk
to a lot of hockey players and they like going
out on the road because it's used as a bonding opportunity,
especially trying to get those new players. There are a
number of rookies on this team, a number of sophomores
on the Wranglers, so just finding that cohesive unit. And
for Brett Sutter, it's his first season as head coach

(20:56):
of this team, so he's walked the walk in terms
of one thousand plus AHL games and he's the perfect
leader for this group. So I think it's just about
finding chemistry. And certainly, no disrespect meant to the Eagles.
They were spectacular last year and thwarted thereby Abbotsford in
the playoffs. But I think it was more of a
Calgary issue than it was a Colorado issue.

Speaker 2 (21:18):
Yeah, and just a quick follow up on the goaltenders,
So maybe not a fair assessment because it looked like
a Prosbotov faced forty two shots compared to Owens just
twenty two. But obviously, if you do look at the
most important category one goal against Owen even though he
probably comes in as the backup, I'm just wondering, is
this still going to be, you know, kind of Prosbotov's

(21:38):
team to lead as the starting goalie or could there
be you know, kind of a fifty to fifty mix there.

Speaker 5 (21:44):
Well, the AHL is all about development, right, and I
think Owen say was brought in as a player that
the Calgary Wranglers will develop with eyes potentially for the
big club at some point in time. But I think
you go with the hot hand. And if I look
back to last year and Cooley had a really tough
stretch in the second half of the season and bil

(22:04):
Terry Ignatchiev essentially took over the nets March into April,
and he started all of the playoff games in Coachella Valley.
So I think at this point you go with your
hot hand and basically you lean on whoever's getting you
the victories.

Speaker 3 (22:21):
Now, stander obviously, you know Brett Sutter, you know first
year coach, obviously, the son of legend Darryl Sutter. What
has his mindset been in practice with the team. Obviously
there's those two tough losses to a Pacific Division arrival
in Colorado. What has he been preaching in practice this week?

Speaker 5 (22:40):
I think not even just this week and this start
of this season. But if you look at the campaign
in its entirety, it's a clean slate. It's he's the
new head coach. There are two new goalies between the pipes.
And what happened last year happened last year. What happened
last weekend happened last weekend. It doesn't matter any more.

(23:00):
You're into song. You're going there to finish off this
four game road trip before you come home and host
your home opener, And I think clean slate, that's the
message you're driving home from the goaltender out now.

Speaker 3 (23:13):
Standard Just another quick follow up. Obviously, both teams are
very penalty heavy. I believe that the Wranglers took I
believe forty two penalty minutes and the Roaderners took thirty
three pennalanies. What is going to be the back and forth.
It's going to be very chippy series. I'm going to say,
what do you think.

Speaker 5 (23:29):
Yeah, things got out of hand a little bit in
terms of some game misconducts, which I think did Pad
that specific stat versus the Colorado Eagles there. But I
think discipline is always a huge issue. If I look
back a year ago, specialty teams certainly were.

Speaker 4 (23:47):
A talking point for the wranglers.

Speaker 5 (23:49):
So if you stay out of the penalty box, then
you don't have to kill penalties. So I think it'll
be leaning on some of those older guys, and it's
situational right when you watch game. If you take an
offensive zone penalty, if you take a stick in for action,
obviously your coach isn't going to be too pleased with you. However,
if you stick up for one of your teammates, you

(24:11):
have to take a hooking call on a breakaway something
to prevent a goal, those kinds of penalties are okay.
So I would just say stay out of the box
if you don't have to be there.

Speaker 4 (24:20):
For this group.

Speaker 2 (24:21):
Yeah, no, that's exactly right. And I think to Patrick's
point though, in the opening series, both Calgary and Tucson,
maybe we're in the box a few more times than
was absolutely necessary, So we'll see if that continues. All right,
I'm looking as an outsider here. There's two or three
players that are kind of jumping out to me based
on last year's production and also getting off to a
good start here offensively in just two games. So I'm wondering,

(24:44):
you know which one of these two or three you
think we should most have our eyes on. If somebody's
a Tucson Roadrunners fan, then the three names I have
are Dryden Hunt, Martin Firk, and Rory Karns.

Speaker 5 (24:55):
Sure, let's start with Rory, who I think Flames fans
are clamoring for time with the big club because he
had a really nice debut with the Flames.

Speaker 4 (25:04):
I believe he put up three assists.

Speaker 5 (25:05):
In four games, and he's really rounding into a good center,
so you'll see him taking a lot of draws. He's
going to play all kinds of situations in the top six,
and I think for the Wranglers it's about a little
bit of development for him, so stronger on the boards
and I think speed, but you will see him taking

(25:27):
crucial draws at crucial times of a game. So if
you're down by one up by one in the third period.
Then I'm looking at two pros pros Dryden Hunt. You
know exactly what you're going to get with him in
and out on a nightly basis. He's just so good
at everything, and frankly, I think he should be with

(25:48):
an NHL club. He's a bit of a tweener right where.
I think he's not ideally a bottom six guy in
the NHL. He should be playing top six minutes. But
he gets that opportunity with the American Hockey League with
Martin Firk right shot an absolute bomb of a shot
from both of the face off circles. You'll notice that

(26:10):
they try to load him up on the power play.
So all I can say is duck because when that
guy lets it go, either the goalie's making a save,
it ends up in the back of the net or
the glass may shatter. And I know that I've been
in the Tucson building and I know that the way
that building is set up, so it's got that opening

(26:30):
at the side there. So even if he does send
it out of play, I don't think it's going to
hit anybody. But yeah, he's just got a phenomenal shot,
and I think he's really adapted to this level really well.
And what Martin Furk can provide is some leadership for
some of the guys in their early twenties mid twenties
and show what it's been like to play a slew

(26:52):
of NHL games and now having your career in the
American Hockey League where you're comfortable. His wife is from
this area here in Calgary. I think he's just enjoying
playing hockey nows.

Speaker 3 (27:03):
Andrew you obviously mentioned Roy Karen's I was reading about
this that he is two points away from passing the
most points score at Ringwack's history.

Speaker 2 (27:10):
What is what you know?

Speaker 3 (27:11):
Obviously you're saying that Flams fans are rooting for this guy.
What could you say that, maybe, you know, his production
in the next couple of games could maybe jump him
up to the next level in the NHL.

Speaker 4 (27:22):
Yeah, for right now, it's tough.

Speaker 5 (27:24):
There's a bit of a log jam with the Flames
right now, and there are some injuries. So once Jonathan
Huberto comes back in Martin Pospissel, I actually see maybe
potentially players coming back down to the Wranglers. But at
some point Rory's going to get games. It's it's not
a question of if. It's a question of when. Last
year it came during January. I could see that happening again.

(27:46):
And for Rory, it's just details, it's little details. You've
seen him be successful at every level he's played at.
He was successful in junior, he was very good in
the East Coast Hockey League. He's made the great transition
to the rank and I think the pro level in
terms of the NHL is the next step for him.
So it's just details. And I don't think he's made

(28:08):
to be a bottom six guy. He's got the skill
set where you could put him in a top nine
power play unit number two. So details will be the
key for Rory Kearns as he continues to move forward
in his career.

Speaker 2 (28:22):
Yeah, and you are listening to Roadrunners between the benches,
joined by Sandra Prusina, the voice of the Calgary Wranglers.
The Wranglers on the Roadrunner set to face off on
Saturday for Tucson's home opener, and I just want to
ask this question. So obviously the Wranglers are in Calgary,
the Flames are in Calgary, which isn't completely unusual, but
certainly a heavy hockey concentration in the city. Do you

(28:44):
think that more fans are aware of what's going on
in the AHL affiliate because of that kind of geographical connection.
If the Flames aren't in town, maybe they'll catch a
Wranglers game. So do you think you have more informed
fans about the farm system and the development process?

Speaker 5 (28:57):
Yes, And I think the Wranglers coming here when they
did really secured that because it was Dustin Wolf and
people knew that he was going to be the next thing.
At least people in this market knew because the scouts
and all of the brass was very open in terms
of this guy. He's going to be very good. And

(29:19):
Calgary is also a very junior hockey loving city, right,
The Calgary Hitman have an excellent pedigree here and people
knew from his junior days that Dustin Wolf was going
to be very good. So having him between the pipes
for two and a half seasons and a couple of
decent playoff runs getting stymied by Coachella, but to be
able to see Dustin knight in and night out, and

(29:41):
the same can be said I think for Connor Zerry.
I think the same can be said for Matt Coronado,
so people were able to see him at the AHL
level and then you see that transition to the big
club and it's fascinating. Like a'll where my Wranglers zip
up somewhere. I'll be shopping and then people will stop

(30:02):
me and ask, oh, hey, I've been to a Wranglers game.
Do you work for the team? And then I tell
them the story and they really like it because they
can get the professional experience for a third of the cost,
and they can sit right up on the glass and
get an appreciation for pros and see them before they
take that next level, which I think is really cool

(30:24):
and just a personal story. My mom's not really into hockey,
but I brought her to a couple of Wranglers games
when Wolfe was still in net and now she watches
Flames games and she's like, hey, I saw him when
he was a wrangler. So it's just a really nice
runway for people, and I think from a family aspect,
and I'm sure you can talk about that in Tucson.

(30:44):
It's a great way of being able to take six
or seven people out versus an NHL game that might
be a little bit out of budget for some people.

Speaker 3 (30:52):
Now obviously sanad you know, for both teams and even
the Calgary Hitman playing in an historic arena like the
Saddle Down What is it an experience wise of you know,
doing a game from the south and in such a
historic stadem as obviously the Flames will be moving on to.

Speaker 2 (31:08):
A different stadium.

Speaker 3 (31:09):
What is kind is it more kind of like a
nostalgia point at this point since the both teams will
probably move on to another stadium in the next couple
of years.

Speaker 5 (31:17):
Right now, Patrick, I'm just trying to soak it up
because that view is incredible. I've been in a lot
of broadcast booths and there's nothing on it, so essentially
and you guys will see it when you come to
the saddle Dome. I hope you're not afraid of heights.
First of all, I'll preface that because you have to
walk the catwalk and it's a little scary, so just

(31:38):
eyes forward, don't look down. But the press box itself,
you're literally right over the ice and you can see
all of the plays develop ozone D Zone, neutral Zone.
It's just it's awesome. And when the building is rockin',
that press box shakes, so you're feeling the literal vibrations,

(31:58):
whether it be from the muse or the fans or
blasty you know, on that drum or something. But it's
such a unique experience and I will miss it. I
will definitely miss it. Of course, you want all the
bells and whistles with a new arena, I will not
deny it. But that view is one of the best,
and I'm just trying to soak it all in before
things change, because you go to some of the newer buildings,

(32:21):
like I've been in Seattle Edmonton, and you're sucked back
a little bit, and from a broadcaster's perspective, you don't
get to see the play develop as well, especially in
those corners. Sometimes if there's a bit of a scrum
or a corner battle on the half wall or something
like that, you just don't really see it as well.
So I'm balancing the knowing that something new is coming

(32:45):
in the future in a couple of years, but also
really embracing the history of that building because it is iconic.
A lot of important games have been played there. It's
a crucial part of this city, in this city's history.
When it comes to the nineteen eighty eight Olympics, you
don't want to totally lose that legacy. And I'm sad
it is leaving, but I understand why you need a

(33:05):
new building, So balancing those two things for sure.

Speaker 3 (33:08):
And I think also, like just you know, to kind
of bring up another point, I think that's a lot
of people who felt with Rexall places when the Oilers
left a few years back. It's kind of giving me
that same feeling a little bit as now they're at
the Rogers Arena I believe it is called, and now
with the flames, but you know, leaving in a couple
of years in the side, I'm just I'm getting that
kind of nostalgia feel right now from them, so.

Speaker 5 (33:30):
For sure, and knowing so where the saddle dough is
right now and the construction site, I could probably chuck
a stone and it would hit it.

Speaker 4 (33:40):
It's that close.

Speaker 5 (33:41):
So it's fascinating when you look outside of this saddle dome.
This is weird dichotomy. I guess you look outside and
you see the other building coming up, Like right now
they're putting the cement. It's very very low in the ground,
so they're putting the cement walls in and everything, so
it's it's neat to be able to see literally how
it's changing day by day. But yeah, it'll be strange.

(34:02):
It'll I don't know if you guys have seen the
Calgary skyline before, but there's this really iconic shot and
the center of it is the Saddle Dome.

Speaker 4 (34:09):
So once that is.

Speaker 5 (34:12):
No longer there, Calgary is going to look a whole
lot different on postcards and Instagram and wherever else you
see pictures of this city.

Speaker 2 (34:20):
Yeah, and sometimes getting rid of those older stadiums isn't
always a popular movement. Like you said, the skyline is
going to take on a different look for sure. I
do have some disappointing news. So our broadcast team isn't
traveling this year. We're calling away games from a studio.
So I won't make that walk that you mentioned, but
it sounds interesting. I wouldn't say I'm afraid of heights,
but I'm not a big fan. I'm kind of somewhere

(34:42):
in the middle, so I would probably be looking down
like oh okay, I say, what's going on, but not
totally unafraid, so probably, you know, it would have been
an interesting walk for sure, but I won't be making
it this year. I was wondering are you coming down
to the desert this weekend.

Speaker 5 (34:55):
I too, do not travel with the team, so I
work in radio full time Monday to Friday. I'm an
afternoon sportscaster here and then I do all of my
wranglers work on the side. Right now, it's just home broadcasts,
and then I travel for playoffs, which is how I
had the opportunity to see Tucson, not last year, but
the year before. I really enjoyed my experience. The fans

(35:19):
were awesome, they were phenomenal. I met so many nice
people there in the convention center and they were friendly,
and a lot of snowbirds, so it made for a
lot of conversation, right people that may have been from
Calgary or the Alberta region, and then they wanted to
chat with me. So I thought everyone was so friendly
and kind and hopefully, you know, knock on wood, we
can see each other again.

Speaker 2 (35:40):
Yeah. Did you have any have to have any Mexican
food when you came down to Tucson?

Speaker 5 (35:44):
Yes, yes, of course. That was at the top of
that bucket list. And just I love the architecture there.
It's just this the Mezso America.

Speaker 4 (35:57):
It's awesome.

Speaker 5 (35:58):
And then I did the hike where a big letter
is yes, yes, sorry, I can think of it. But
did that hike just and the sunsets were phenomenal. Reminded
me a lot of here when you look at the Rockies.
Obviously the landscape is a bit different, but loved it.
The heat was phenomenal, too very dry, so just enjoyed it.
I hope I get another chance to come down for sure.

Speaker 2 (36:21):
Yeah, Okay, one last question and then we'll let you
go with thank you. We've had you for quite a
few minutes, so we're appreciative. So you mentioned that you're
an afternoon sportscaster in Calgarham just wondering on a Thursday afternoon,
you know, you go onto the mic, what's your lead story?
Because we probably have some fans and twos on wondering,
you know, what's the big story up in Calgary these days.

Speaker 5 (36:40):
Sure, So I was just working on my scripts before
I sat down with you guys. So the flames are
off today, busy day in terms of NHL Canadian teams.

Speaker 4 (36:48):
Actually everybody's in action other than the flames.

Speaker 5 (36:51):
But my lead story today is what's happening in Seattle
because the Blue jayser are the country's baseball team, right,
so an opportunity to draw even with the Mariners and
the Alcs, that is the big story. I do work
for Sportsnet, which is the home broadcaster as well the
rights holder for the Blue Jays, so we obviously talk
that up a bit. But I would probably say my

(37:13):
colleagues and I, what we're talking about right now is
playoff baseball, and then from there, let's see what else.
There is a professional women's soccer team here in Calgary,
the Calgary Wild of the Northern super League. They're playing
their final match of this season. And then of course
Thursday night football also very popular here. A lot of
NFL fans, I think, on both sides of the border,

(37:35):
so that's going to make its way into the cast.
It might be a little bit of a footnote today
given everything else that's happening, But right now baseball, who's.

Speaker 2 (37:43):
The NFL team in Calgary or is it a total split?

Speaker 5 (37:47):
It's funny. I like the Seattle Seahawks. It's more of
a proximity thing. I'm actually a Mariners fan too. Don't
tell anybody around here. I am a Mariners fan, but
everybody is different.

Speaker 4 (37:58):
It's funny. I talk to the people in the newsroom.

Speaker 5 (38:01):
There's a Bengals fan, a couple of Giants fans, Eagles fans,
So I think this is a there we go. This
is a very eclectic market. I think we maybe gravitate
towards players more so than we gravitate towards teams, just
because it's not like we're in Ontario and the Buffalo
Bills are right there, right, So I'd probably say proximity

(38:21):
wise it would be Seattle, but more so people following
players and then just latching onto a team.

Speaker 2 (38:27):
Yeah, yeah, and thank you so much. Some great insights.
I've always wondered, because the NFL is by far the
largest sport here in the US, that if you just
go up to the border, if that's still the case.
But it's interesting. I wouldn't think that there's a night
football would make it on, but you said that it
is still something that people are interested in despite like
you said, the Blue Jays making a run and also
the beginning of the NHL season. Well, great insights, Sandrew.

(38:48):
We appreciate the time so much. Wranglers and Roadrunners two
games both on Saturday and Sunday, with the Roadrunners home
openers starting at seven pm with pregame coverage on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty at six forty five Vibe once again
thanks to Sandra Prusina, and we thank you for listening
to roadrunners between the benches.
