Speaker 1 (00:01):
From road Runners Weekly. This is Between the Benches. You're
all access breed. You have the week ahead. We'll look
at the roadrunners upcoming opponents at the inside story and
here directly from the voices and players that know them best,
with David Moradian and Patrick Lord.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Welcome to another edition of Between the Benches, a Tucson
Roadrunners podcast on the iHeart Radio Network for podcasting. David Moradian,
Patrick Moore, Patrick A lot of people very excited about
where the Roadrunners were going into yesterday's game. They were
winners of two of their last three against Colorado, looking
to take three out of four. Didn't work out that way.
(00:41):
They outshot the Eagles in the final game. Couple of
tough breaks. It is what it is. One kind of
sloppy turnover from Matthew Vilalta that resulted in the third
goal for the Eagles a little bit easier than most
goals coming around in the AHL. But nonetheless, the Roadrunners
go two and two against Colorado, which, if we're being honest,
you have to say that that's a win for Tucson.
(01:02):
Right you're looking up at the standings, with how much
the Roadrunners have to look up, you could almost injure
your neck. Colorado has such a big lead over really
everyone in the Pacific Division, so to be able to
play them five hundred, you know, two and two, I
think that's pretty solid, and I'm sure that the Roadrunners,
they may not admit it, but I think they're pleased
with that effort.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
What do you think, David, I think you're absolutely right.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
I think this is a thing for Tucson and also
the fans to think that we played the best team
in the Pacific Division with twenty seven points and a
big lead on San Jose and you split with them,
and a lot of teams probably have not split with
with Colorado. They came in and Tucson played very well
over the weekend. I even thought in terms of the
(01:44):
second and third period, there was you know, kind of
times where Tucson had a lot of the possession. I
mean they outshot him, I believe in both games. So
the tail is, yeah, we outshot them. But unfortunately, that
little five minute segment where Colorado got in a couple
of goals and that luck you went off of Matthew
Balta's turnover unfortunately caused Tucson to still not have a
(02:08):
sweep through.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
Was it November twenty fourth today, right.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
And that voultiple it's kind of the risk you run.
I would say he is one of the more active
goalies outside of the crease, and a lot of times
it can work to the advantage, but there's always that
looming thought in the back of your mind that it
doesn't take much you leave the goal unattended or a
turnover right in front could be a real issue.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
And that's exactly what happened there.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Again, you have to be realistic with the expectations, right,
of course, when you're up to one, you want to
take three out of four, But going into the series
before they went up to the Rockies last weekend, two
and two would have been perfectly acceptable, and that's exactly
what they come away with.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
Yeah, No, you're absolutely right. I mean, it was a
lot of uncertainty a couple of weeks ago when we
did an episode previewing the one in Love one. So
I think Tucson actually got a lot better. There's a
lot of players that stood out in the past four
games between these two teams. It got a little bit chippier,
as we talked about last week last podcast. So I
(03:05):
think overall, solid, good tests that they passed and some
big matchups coming up with the San Diego goals and
appus for coming in this.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Ye yeah, we'll look ahead to those in just the second.
I just want to say one thing. There was an indication,
at least to me, that Sunday was a big game.
You want to take a guess at that, Patrick, I
doubt you'll be able to tell you want me to
just tell you. There was mon sign in the press
box where I said, oh, this is a big one,
this one matters.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Oh, I mean it was Montana Antibuchi's two hundred game.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Aniabucci's two hundred game. What I was actually looking for
is I glanced over you. You were sitting in front
of me, you had the glasses on, you were hyper focused,
and really just the the attention that you were giving
the ice with the glasses and everything. I said, Oh,
we're in business now, this is this is serious stuff.
It almost felt like a playoff game. And I'm basing
that solely off of your attention to the action.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
It's it's a I rarely were my reading glasses. Yeah,
oh you had them out.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
I mean it looked like it looked like a lawyer
working overtime on a big time case in the conference room.
He's got the cheaters on, he's surveying the documents, he's
building a case.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
I think I get it from my dad.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
He's he's one of those guys who puts out the
reading classes when something big is going on.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
And do you call them cheaters or reading glasses? I
just call them glasses. I just glasses.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
Yeah, you're not going you're not going with the ninety
year old vernacular there.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
Oh, hold cheaters out of the case.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Huh, I say so you don't.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
You don't call them cheaters. No, I don't even heard
of that was even a slide.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
Oh that's a thing that especially in the sixty five
plus demo.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Oh okay, I didn't know.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
I didn't know if you were if you were going
to identify them as such. But nonetheless I could tell
you were pretty locked in. And the question, you're going
to be there Wednesday, right for San Diego? Will the
reading glasses make another appearance? Do you view this as
a big game?
Speaker 4 (04:52):
I don't think the reading glasses will come out. The
pair I was wearing is Ozho and one. The other
pair I were on Saturday is one and out.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
We were a parent Saturday too. I didn't see that.
Yes I was.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
I was trying to lean over a little bit to
get you and James's attention, But you guys were so
obvious on a great on a great broadcast. So that's
why I decided to sit in front of you guys yesterday,
and I saw you a.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Loud and clear you were. You were perfectly in front
of me.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
You were on the other side of the glass with
over with Michael on Saturday's game. And like I said,
I'm I'm a hard person to get attention to. Michael
can probably relate to that. I just kind of I
don't want to say I zone out because I'm watching
the game, but I'm I'm not very good at multitasking.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Apparently that must be my issue.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
Yeah, it's very true. I will say that it was
a very tight squeeze. Michael had all of his gear behind,
so I had to like lean and then we were trade.
We were trading chairs both during the intermission, that's right. Yeah,
so we had.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
To stand up during the game. But in the intermission report,
you know, I'm not an athlete.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
A little bit of load down on vacation, a little
bit at the TCC.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Yeah, I liked the like to just take take a
little sit during the intermission, and I also want to
read off my computer. I got to check the score,
so I don't really want to stand and arch my
back and affect my posture by laboring over my computer.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
That would be a pretty awkward look. So I need
the chair.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
I appreciate you coughing it up during the intermission. Very
generous of you. But anyway, here's here's my point, San
Diego coming into town. You'll be there wednesday. I will not, unfortunately,
heading back to the East Coast for the holidays. I'm
leaving James all by himself. Make sure our man is
doing okay. Patrick, I'm kind of trusting you on this.
If he needs a little bit of help or whatever,
he might he might get lost without me. We don't know,
(06:35):
we don't know how this is going to go.
Speaker 4 (06:37):
I think he'll do fine. I think I think he's
done it. I mean, the guy's done it for a
long time now.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
He's he's been he's been calling hockey games for years.
He's done one road Runner game by himself a couple
of weeks ago, is against Iowa. I think on a
Sunday you were there. He helped him on the intermission,
so he may need a little pointing. Probably somebody to
bring him some gum, because that's been my job the
last couple of week weeks, somebody to laugh at his jokes.
I'm kind of getting sick of that job.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
I'm is peer MacGuire to be honest.
Speaker 4 (07:06):
Okay, that's right, I'm the peer McGuire was doc emworks,
So I think I think that's where.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
He said, who is the the side character there? And
Barbie I don't even remember their name starts with a B.
Do you know who I'm talking about? He said that's
who I was, which I don't know how to feel
about that. I don't know if Ken's Ken No, No,
he would never I'm not Ken Brad.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
Is it Brad? No?
Speaker 4 (07:29):
No, We'll we'll get back to that. Yeah, Michael needs
to maybe look that up. That's probab.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Yeah, we need Well, we'll get an answer on that.
But I'll tell you who he was calling me later
in the show. So incentive to listen. Here's the situation tomorrow.
We've got Owen Allard on Happy Hour and now I
have to tell you he's playing very well and he
had another point that he threw in. I think he
had a two point weekend. Patrick, correct me if I'm wrong.
But Allard seems to be a pretty steady guy, and
it's guys like him a little bit quieter in the
(07:56):
beginning of the season, but they're starting to be more
and more active on the ice, and I think as
long as that's the case for the Roadrunners, if they
can get more production outside of their top two lines,
whatever line Deneil Boot is on, they're gonna produce. And
we saw him score another goal on Sunday. I did
predict that in our pregame show, So thank you very much.
Two points there. I think I got a third point
over the weekend because I believe I had he big
(08:19):
on Saturday. He had and assists. So I'm definitely in
first place now. But that's the story for another day. Nonetheless,
here's the situation, Daniel Boot, whatever line he is on,
they're going to produce. And then you've got the perennially good,
he big McCartney Paganski line, right, so you trust those two,
that's six players, six out of your twelve forwards, right
(08:40):
to go out there and get it done. And then
the other six.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
It's kind of like, well, we'll see what we get
that day.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Ryan McGregor playing terrific, Coont's starting to play better, Owen
Alard giving some production loots. Right, If those four guys
and others, ty Tulio comes to mind, Right, if these
guys can contribute not on the level of the top six,
but anywhere close, the road Runners are a completely different
team than Patrick. I think that that was one of
the biggest changes last weekend. They got a little bit
more from their depth pieces against Colorado.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
And I think so too.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
I think there's some players like McGregor who probably won't
be on the scoresheet every game, like a Cam Heap
but Benca, but they're doing the little plays that will
give them, give to sons some momentum, some juice, so
that when they can go in and play teams like
Colorado and San Diego and Coachella, that they they're already
ready to go. Culture guys as we talked about last week, David,
(09:32):
So that's.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
Me, but culture Guy implies that not a ton of production,
but a good attitude. I think some of these guys
are starting to produce Patrick, So culture Guy may be
kind of under selling it, especially when you talk about
Ryan McGregor. He was somebody who may have checked that
category early in the season when he wasn't active on
the roster, but very popular in the locker room. But
now he's on the ice, playing on the third line
(09:55):
alongside some pretty big name players, right, and starting to
make things happen on the ice. So he's kind of
graduating from culture guy into a real contributor for the
Tucson road Runners. Okay, let's look ahead here, San Diego.
The goals coming into town on Wednesday, seven o'clock, puck
drop Patrick, the day before Thanksgiving. You know, we've got
(10:16):
those family plans and all these things. Good opportunity to
get some good deals, right, maybe some discounts and bring
a large group maybe got family in town to the
TCC on Wednesday, seven o'clock, San Diego. Matthew Phillips kind
of the guy seventeen points this season. He reminds me
frankly of TJ. Tynan of the Colorado Eagles, because the
(10:37):
vast majority of Phillips points are helpers. He's got fourteen assists,
three goals this year and seventeen points. That's a top
mark across the entire AHL. A couple of other players
impressive as well, including Clawfield. Judd Caufield has seven goals
this season. Anytime you see a number, I think seven
or higher, that's certainly somebody to keep an eye on.
(10:58):
Are there any players in particular on San Diego, Patrick,
that we should keep an eye on here?
Speaker 4 (11:04):
I think one guy in particular, and this is more
of a veteran, Ryan Carpenter. Ryan Carpenter, he played many
years in the National Hockey League. He also was a
part of the twenty seventeen Vegas Golden Knights. Kind of
I would say Cinderella run to the Stanley Cup. So
he has that experience. He's kind of bounced around a
(11:25):
few organizations, including the San Jose Barracuda. Now he's in
San Diego, he maybe can be kind of an interest,
as you know, kind of like an inspiration to some
of these youth. He's also a ten points through sixteen les,
seven assists. He's been one of those veteran presents I
think you should look out for during this weekend series.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
Now, are we going to have any split alliances here, Patrick,
with San Diego being the affiliate here for your Anaheim
Ducks or are you gonna be okay?
Speaker 4 (11:54):
I think I'm gonna be okay. You know, I really
I'm focused on the big club right now. It's always
it's always kind of nice to look what's going on
down in San Diego.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
But I think I'll be okay. And uh, you know so,
I think so.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
But I would like to ask you, David Yes out
there the goal from Sam Colangelo a couple of days
ago and the call by the San Diego commentator.
Speaker 3 (12:21):
M hm.
Speaker 4 (12:22):
I just want to get your thoughts as a as
you know, as your sense. You're a commentator for for Arizona,
you know, student camp radio. What did you think of
the game time goal? Because it was it was a
buzzer beater technically.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
So what did your absolutely was a buzzer beater? Yeah,
so let me ask you a question before we get
into this. You associate me as an Arizona student broadcaster
ahead of a Tucson Roadrunners broadcast.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
Is that how we're doing this? No, that's that. I
just I just said, you're a fellow comment you know
you're also the.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
I understand that, But then your evidence for that was
not that I've already done more than a dozen Roadrunner
games this year, but rather mysel which is fine.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
That's just an interesting I was. I was. I was
basing it. Since you do the play by play for.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
That, fair enough, I was a player, Okay, I understand. Yeah,
So here's my first of all, love the energy. Certainly
we're talking about it, which means he's done his job right.
The game was weeks ago and here we are having
the conversation.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
Ties it up? Three seconds of penn for Collins. Somebody
call that calls him tied this game up at three?
Speaker 3 (13:30):
Somebody call my mama was the key line there. Now.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
I just have a couple of questions about that. I
would have loved to have asked him if we could
have got him on the show. Is his mother a
big Goals fan? First of all, you know, why are
we calling her? Are we calling her because maybe she
hasn't really bedtime? She turned the game off, didn't look good.
Somebody's got to call her and say, hey, we've got
overtime coming up.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
Isn't that the plot line?
Speaker 2 (13:50):
Is she a super fan that maybe was just unable
to watch that night? I just need a little bit
more context there. I think that's my issue. What do
you think I think so too.
Speaker 4 (13:58):
You know, you know how sometimes play by play announcers
will have certain catchphrases and yeah, stuff like that. You know,
the Pittsburgh Penguins radio guy for the longest time had
you know, I don't know about he talked about Elvis
and stuff like that. So I think I think everyone
has their own kind of thing.
Speaker 3 (14:19):
Well, here's here's what happens. I'll give you a little
bit of perspective.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
Whenever a crazy moment happens, that's a buzzer beater goal
in hockey. That doesn't happen every day, right, think about
a walk off touchdown, whatever it may be. Yeah, exactly,
game time goal of the buzzer. You don't know how
you're going to control your emotions, right, You don't even
know if words are going to come to your mind.
It's very challenging to have clear thoughts in such a
(14:44):
crazy moment, so you kind of have to roll with
whatever comes to mind. And I think in this case,
the first thing that came to his mind was somebody
called my mama. You know that this game is tied,
the goals are going overtime, so it is challenging to
rationally and clearly explos what you've just seen when it's
so surprising and unexpected. Right, even in hockey generally you
(15:05):
can anticipate something developing, you have an odd man rush,
whatever it may be, so your brain is not completely
caught off guard in that case. So it was just
a shot from the point, kind of a hail Mary,
and it got through at the buzzer. So I don't
think there was much preparation there, and again, very challenging
to really find the right words in a moment like that,
and I'm not saying he didn't. I think it was
(15:25):
a really electric call and certainly you know, he found
words which I'm not sure I would have, So shout
out to him. Very exciting. We're having the conversation here
and maybe you'll have to joke with him about it
when you see him on Wednesday.
Speaker 3 (15:39):
Yeah, maybe, I mean, who knows? Who knows?
Speaker 2 (15:41):
Fine doing Patrick, here's the deal. The road Runners have
only played series this year, and one more note on
the Colorado series. The Eagles lost two straight games. They
lost the finale up in the Rocky Mountains last Saturday
the fifteenth, and then they lost again on Saturday the
twenty second at the TCC. Patrick that is the first time,
the first time Colorado lost consecutive games where there was
(16:03):
a two game stretch where they came away with zero
points and they only scored one goal in those two games.
So the Roadrunners did something to the Eagles that hadn't
been done all year. Now when they play San Diego,
it's going to be just one game. The first of
that this season, the first time Tucson is not playing
a series, and then they're going to have Abbotsford for
a series this weekend on Friday and Saturday, Black Friday
(16:23):
game at three pm and then Saturday back at seven o'clock,
both of those games at the TCC. Tickets available. Tucson
Roadrunners dot Com will have coverage on fourteen fifty AM
and of course HLTV on Flow Sports. Let's talk about
Abbotsford and one of the things James has mentioned, He's
absolutely right about this Vancouver the big club.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
They're so injured and the.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
Best players from the Abbotsford Canucks are not playing with
the Abbotsford Canucks right now. That's really hurt them. In
the standings. Abbotsford is dead last in the Pacific Division
eighteen games, Patrick three to twelve one and two, so
that is certainly not where you want to be. Meanwhile,
the Tucson Roadrunners are seven to seven and two in
sixteen games. They have four more wins than Abbotsford. They've
(17:09):
played two less games, so certainly the Roadrunners have been
a lot more prolific this season. Now they're right there
with San Diego who's six five and five, which is
a lot of overtime losses. They may have to work
on their three on three game, but nonetheless Abbotsford really struggling.
A lot of that has to do with the situation
above them with Vancouver. What have you seen from the
(17:29):
Canucks this year and what are your expectations for that
series this weekend.
Speaker 4 (17:34):
I think this could be a trap series for Tucson.
We've kind of talked about it when we when Manitoba
came to town. Manitoba had won a lot of games
up to that series, Twuson got swept.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
I think the Roadrunners need to be very.
Speaker 4 (17:46):
Careful on how they kind of view this series, just
because they could fall in the same sort of I
guess traps. Would you say against the team it has
only won three games and actually one of the I
would say, you know, kind of in the bottom of
the entire league. But as you could say, and as
James even as you mentioned that. With that, James said,
they're very you know, the big club, Vancouver very injured.
(18:09):
A lot of their top scorers have gone up to
help out as reinforcements. So I feel like once those
guys come back from Vancouver back to Abbotsford, we might
be seeing a different story in a couple months or
maybe just yeah, maybe, Avious. You know, sometimes it's the champion,
the championship hangover, as they say it.
Speaker 3 (18:29):
Now.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
The one thing about the Pacific Division and Abbotsford doesn't
really fit into this box, but certainly San Diego does,
is it's incredibly congested. Patrick, you want to talk about
San Jose the Barracuda, They've played seventeen games, they have
twenty two points. Meanwhile, the road Runners have played sixteen games,
they have sixteen points. So you're talking about a very
close five points there and or six points. And the
(18:54):
Roadrunners have a game in hand, so if they were
to win their next game, they'd only be four points
behind San Jose.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
That's virtual nothing.
Speaker 2 (19:01):
San Jose is in second place, the Roadrunners are ninth. Well,
so that just tells you all of these teams are
right there the two outliers of the Pacific Division, Colorado
and Abbotsford. The Roadrunners were right there with Colorado, who's
an outlier on the top end, So that tells you
that they should be miles above Abbotsford, who's the outlier
on the bottom end.
Speaker 4 (19:21):
Well, if you look at it, and I'm looking at
the stands right now, from seeds five to nine, Yeah,
Hendrystond and Coachella nineteen points, tied Baker Shield in seventh
with eighteenth San Diego and eighth with seventeen, and the
road Runners in six with sixteen points. Right, Abbits, it
is just a just a plectra of just teams and
(19:42):
justin as you say it. So, I think once the
season kind of rolls on, maybe once we get to
the holidays and maybe December, you know, even January, you
can see the teams will start to kind of shape up,
injuries will start happening, teams will go on cold streak,
some teams will go We'll.
Speaker 3 (19:59):
Get really red hot.
Speaker 4 (20:00):
So I think this is kind of a temporary congestion,
I would say, But who knows, maybe this might be
the whole season.
Speaker 3 (20:07):
Who knows it might be want be a.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
Player to keep an eye on for the Canucks.
Speaker 3 (20:11):
Ty Muller.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
He was a fourth round pick in twenty twenty three,
still a very young player drafted by Vancouver. He's got
three goals and three assists this year, so he is.
It doesn't jump off the page right when you hear
those stats. But somebody that I think has a lot
of energy, a young guy, right, and I think starting
to come onto the scene for Abbasfurd and I'm sure
Vancouver has their eyes on Mueller, so see if he
(20:33):
can get some momentum against the Tucson Roadrunners again. The
Roadrunners play at seven o'clock against the Goals on Wednesday. Patrick,
you know where you can find tickets, that's Tucson Roadrunners
dot com. And coverage is going to be on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty HLTV on Flow Sports as well. Pregame
at six forty five on Wednesday. That's going to be
a James Mackie pregame vehicle, so it's not going to
(20:54):
have the same kind of sound.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
Some people are disappointed about that.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
I think others might be excited, but nonetheless, it's going
to be all James at six forty five on Wednesday,
and then the coverage is gonna start at two forty
five on Friday. We'll be back at six forty five
on Saturday. Those second two games against Abbatsar. That's what's
coming up for the Tucson Roadrunners. But thank you so
much for listening to between the benches for Patrick Moore.
This is David Meridian saying so long.
