Speaker 1 (00:01):
It's five o'clock on your Tuesday night. This is Tucson
Roadrunners Happy I We're from Fox Sports fourteen fifty a
yem with James mackew, David Brady and then Kim Connor Roadblas.
It's our usual Tuesday night get together right here on
Tucson Sports stick shait Fox Sports fourteen fifty A yea,
(00:21):
Welcome back.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
To our usual Tuesday night Shenanigans. James Mckewlong sid David
Meridian and video coach for the Tucson Roadrunners, Max Markowitz, Max,
how you doing today?
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Really good? Really good?
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Kind of walk us through a day in the life
of Max Markowitz as the video coach for the two
Sun Roadrunners. What does it look like, what do you
kind of do on a daily basis? And what's your job?
Entail and hold without giving away too much of the
important stuff if you.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
Will, Oh, you guys, you guys gonna have all the
important stuff. There's not not really too too much and
involved with my job. But I'm an early riser, so
I get to the rink pretty early and usually get
a workout in with Jeff and then after that, probably
(01:09):
my most important task of the day is starting the
coffee and make sure the coffee is ready for Jeff
and I and everybody else. After that, and after that
is I guess when when you would say that the
work starts. So I just we have three TVs in
the lounge, so usually something goes up on each TV
(01:31):
every day. It's just kind of dependent on where we
are in the week. Whether it's you know, a review
from the last game, or if we're kind of midweek,
maybe a look into who we're playing, or you know,
at times it's just you know, kind of a review
of our practice days and stuff like that. And so
I usually do that and get the schedule up so
(01:54):
everybody knows what's going on. And then after that I
usually sit down with Potsy and Patty and I put
together the big meeting that we show the team every day.
So we usually go through that. And the new program
that we have here compared to what they have last
year is it's pretty selex So there's a lot of
(02:14):
a lot of drawings and markings and stuff that you
can put on it that takes a lot of the
talking out of it, so you don't have to, you know,
over explain things. You can kind of just draw it
and circle and this is who I'm talking about and
everything like that. So usually, uh, that takes probably I
(02:36):
don't know, I'd say probably the better part of an
hour in the morning to kind of put the finishing
touches on the meeting, and then after that usually the
guys get on the ice for practice and I have
a little bit of time to start to start working ahead.
So and that all just depends on the same thing
where we are in the week. But a lot of
times I can start looking towards you know, next opponent.
(02:58):
What we're gonna do are selecting those clips for everybody
and putting that stuff together, and then when when those
guys get off the ice, we usually kind of sit
down and go through, you know, whatever's lot for the
for the day video wise, and handle most of that stuff.
And and then after that it's just kind of just
(03:20):
fill in, fill in time with whatever's laugh. So, I mean,
it seems a lot busier than than it is. But
we we've got a pretty good routine here now that
we're kind of you know, two or three weeks uh
into the season at least, And so now now we
got a pretty good routine of how it goes.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
Max. If you don't mind, I want to jump in
here just a couple of rapid fire questions. Yeah, so
that our viewers and listeners are on the same page. So,
first of all, every morning starts with coffee. Are you
taking it black milk, sugar?
Speaker 3 (03:54):
Neither both?
Speaker 1 (03:55):
No?
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Straight black, every black coffee.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
Okay, And not like these guys. You're not like these
guys that I saw on my algorithm who order a
black coffee and then they scribble a piece of paper
handed to the barista and it says it's actually a
pumpkin spice latte. You're not one of those guys.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Oh no, no. So I've been around enough places and
been in hockey long enough that you know everybody calls
it the diesel. So I just drank the diesel, straight black,
straight from the old ring coffee maker that's probably been
here for ten years that.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
Everything green has.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
Oh yeah, no, no. The equipment guys do an unbelievable
job of keeping it clean and keeping after Jeff and
I because we drink the most coffee, so we usually
we usually take the last part of the day and
then we're responsible for keeping it clean.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
So and then for those who don't know who is Jeff.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Jeff is a goalie coach.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
Okay, there we Okay, I just want to I just
want to get get some make sure everybody's on the
tape page. And then an early riser. What time do
you get up in the morning, and then what time
do you get to the arena?
Speaker 3 (04:59):
So my alarm has said at four thirty every day,
and I'm at the rink at probably four fifty four
fifty five.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
That doesn't sound like you're doing the necessary maybe hygiene
things in the morning. That's a pretty quick turnaround, Max.
I'm not accusing you of anything, but four thirty to
four to fifty. I don't know how long the drive
you have, but I just hope you're you're spending enough
time in the bathroom in the morning.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Well, I will tell you I do make sure I
brush my teeth. I am an avid flosser, so I
floss every day. Okay, hit the mouth, wash, clear out
the eyes with a little bit of soap and water,
and then jump in the car and go everything else.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Soap and water in your eyes, that's crazy.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Yeah, gotta wait a minute.
Speaker 4 (05:43):
Wait a minute, is that Am I missing something? Because
I don't do that and I've never heard of anybody
doing that.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
To be honest, well, I guess it would be like
what do you call it, like the like the facial
cleansing soap. So I mean it's not like don dish
soap or anything, but which is say?
Speaker 4 (06:00):
I mean they have a little.
Speaker 3 (06:02):
I think the routine maybe a morning make sure that
the eyes all look too puffy, and then jump in
the car and go.
Speaker 4 (06:10):
There we go. That's that's pretty much all I had
for the rapid fire. There the defense can rest James
if you want to jump in here.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
A really super dedicated, in decorated resume here max fifteen
years of coaching experience across professional collegiate in international hockey,
most recently serving as an assistant coach in the KHL
from twenty four to twenty five. How do you get
from the KHL to the AHL. That's two totally different worlds.
(06:39):
I kind of feel like.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
Yeah, that's that's an interesting it's an interesting question. So
I actually worked in the American Hockey League A in
two thousand and fourteen, I think was. I was a
video coach in Saint John's team that's no longer around anymore,
(07:03):
and so I worked there and basically I was a
video coach and I did not I don't know. At
that time, I didn't really enjoy being a video coach.
It was a lot harder than it is now. There
wasn't as much technology. So for instance, like when you
had to like download the games of like your upcoming
(07:25):
opponents and stuff, like they didn't get posted till you know,
four o'clock in the morning, and then you would have
to you know, either stay up or wake up and
you know, work for two or three hours straight, meet
the head coach in the morning, show them all the stuff,
put it all together. Like it was really really really
like it was time consuming. That's changed a little bit
(07:46):
now they have like a platform where basically like you
just upload as you go, so like after the first
period of our home game, like I just start uploading
our game just so you know, other teams can get
it and stuff like that. So after doing that for
a year, and especially like doing it in Saint John's,
like the travel was really hard. Everything was you know,
(08:08):
the time change, everything like that. It was it was
a pretty tough place to work in, but I really
enjoyed it. But like I decided, like, hey, I want
to try and do try and do the assistant assistant
coaching thing, and they they were more than happy to
help me out, so they sent me to their ECHL affiliate.
So I was assistant coach there for four years with
(08:31):
their ECHL affiliates. And obviously I wanted to try and
work in the American League as an assistant coach and
was having a hard time getting interviews and you know
a lot of interviews. You know, you have one here there,
but this is tough league to kind of break into.
So I decided like, I'll try and go to Europe
(08:52):
and make some connections and ended up in Europe and
just met, you know, a couple of different people that
helped kind of push me along and eventually ended up
in the KHL. And then, you know, after talking with
my wife and everything, she's like, yeah, it would be
good if you were home for home for the in
(09:13):
North America for a year, come back, see if you
can try it. And I, you know, I kind of
was pushing myself to do that because the KHL is great.
It's a great league. I had nothing but good things
to say about it. But you feel like you're so
far away from the NHL and that's obviously my goal,
and I wanted to, you know, kind of come back
(09:35):
and try and figure out a way to get close
to the NHL again. And so this opportunity had come
up and I jumped at it, and you know, it's
been working out great. Like, you know, you get to
go to camp. So we were at camp for three
weeks with the NHL team, and you feel like you're involved,
and you know, the GM's here and he's around, and
(09:57):
so like you just feel like you're involved in more
closely tied to the NHL. And that's kind of what
I wanted and why I decided to come.
Speaker 4 (10:05):
Back, no no question about that. And getting back to
your age, I'll experience and the decision to come to Tucson.
Is this your first time kind of in the American Southwest,
and what have you thought so far? I know you
haven't been here long, but early impressions of the region.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
Yeah, No, I mean yeah, so I think I'd been
to Arizona once once before, but that that was it.
And then you know, I've been to California maybe once
in my life too, and so it's it's been nice
traveling around. The weather's unbelievable, tough to say a bad
(10:44):
thing about that. It's a little weird though, like I've
been telling people, like you know, living I live in
North Dakota during the summer, so like whenever the weather's
is nice in North Dakota, like it stays light telling
nine or ten o'clock, and it's weird that it's so
nice and it gets dark at you know, five five
(11:04):
thirty here. It's been an adjustment with that. But that's
really the only the only thing that I could say.
But yeah, the weather's unbelievable. The road trips so far,
you know, Ontario, Colorado before it got cold, Like the
road trips are good. Hitting those those places in February
and everything like that are going to be nice too.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
You get the Midwest out of the way early. With Iowa,
I was probably pretty nice to go well, it was
somewhat warmish, kind of temporary.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
I guess. Yeah, it's like Iowa. It was nice to
go back whenever it was pretty decent weather, and it's
nice to go back to the Midwest and remember what
that's like and all that. But I know, I think
we go to Manitoba in March, so that'll be that'll
(11:54):
be a cold one, but you know, we'll have enough
sunshine by the that will be nice to feel some seasons.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Part of the beauty of coming from one hundred degrees
is when you go north to the border and it's
still you know, forty thirty fair inheight. You're like, wow,
I can stomach this for three days and then I'm
back to one hundred degrees. It's it's a beautiful little balance.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
Well, and I mean two years ago I lived in Siberia,
so I all take a little extra sun It's fair
there you go.
Speaker 4 (12:23):
Let me ask you what a question?
Speaker 3 (12:26):
Go ahead, David, but.
Speaker 4 (12:28):
Me to take it. Sorry about I think we're a
little bit lagging, so I apologize for that. I don't
know if we're the connection, but anyway, so you're going
through the video, right, and then you mentioned you have
a meeting with coach Codvin and then you got and
then there's a presentation. Are you involved at all in
the presenting part once the general tape goes out to
the team or do you go over with Patzi and
(12:49):
then he delivers your message on you know, from him
on your behalf.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
In terms of like presenting to the team. Now, I
just uh, I said, like I sit with Potsy and
just kind of help them, you know, arrange the order
and just kind of you know, to be honest with
you like, you know, it's it's part of like helping
helping the head coach kind of arrange their thoughts because
(13:15):
you know, after a game, whether you win or lose, like,
there's so many things that you can kind of pick
apart and work on this and talk about this and
we need to do this better. We did this really
really good, and you know, at the end of the
day it just becomes you know, a jumble massive you know,
twenty clips and just kind of trying to you know,
(13:38):
talk to him and say, hey, like, okay, well, what's
the message going to be today and what are we
going to try and say like or are we going
to try and point out all the positives that we
did and you know then that's what we need to
hit on. Are we going to talk about, hey, these
three things are the things that are going to help
us win you know tonight, then that's what we need
to talk about. Or you know, at times sometimes it's
(14:01):
a combination of that and it just kind of all depends.
So it's more so just kind of helping to have
him kind of arrange as his thoughts and you know,
kind of have a clear and concise message and really
like at the end of the day, like he's he's
so good in meetings, like it would kind of be
(14:22):
a disservice to take away his voice. Like he's a
really good presenter. So I think that, you know, having
him kind of deliver the message and helping him figure
out what the message is, it's probably better suited for
the group that we at now than you know me,
you know, delivering a message. So I don't I'm not
(14:46):
that type of guy, Like I don't need to, you know,
be in front of the team in order to feel
like I'm doing something or providing something, you know. So
I have no issues with that at all.
Speaker 4 (14:58):
Okay, So give us the scouting port on Steve Potvin
the presenter. Does he keep the glasses on? Does he
lower them kind of like a Chuck Schumer look on
the on the tip of his nose? Is he aggressive?
Is he soft spoken? I want the full video coach
analysis of what Steve Poppin is like as a presenter.
Speaker 3 (15:18):
Yeah, no, I mean to be honest with you, I
think that's I think that's why he's so good is
he is a pretty good understanding of like of the
room and like what the message should be and kind
of how to convey it. So I mean there's times where, yeah,
like he he does have you know, an aggressive approach
or you know, he comes in and he's loud and
(15:39):
he's voisterous, and you know it's usually on those those
saturdays after that after that first game, when guys are
tired and they need a little bit of energy and
you know, obviously like we can't provide that energy for
him for the game, but you know, just that little
spark to kind of like get him going a little bit.
And you know, there's times where he understands, you know,
(16:03):
like hey, like we have a busy schedule. We've been working,
Like I don't need to come at him at him,
you know, one hundred miles an hour a year, Like
I can be a little bit calmer in my approach
and we can talk through things and have a more
interactive meeting than more you know, us talking to them
type things. So I think that's what's so good, you know,
and what he does really well. I think, you know,
(16:26):
as far as as far as the glasses, I would
say it's it's kind of a mix. I would say,
I don't think I've ever seen him at the tip
of his nose. They usually alternate between going on and off.
But I'm gonna be honest with you too, I don't.
I actually don't stand in the room whenever. Whenever he's
(16:47):
doing his meetings. I sit in the lounge. And there's
a reason for it, but I sit in the lounge.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
So one thing I do kind of want to ask
you is I'm looking again at your resume decorated in
professional high But the biggest thing that's saying out to
me is internationally, the China women's national team and then
Finland's eighteen teams at the i HF World Championships and
the national team at the Winter Olympics. How do you
fall into working for two different countries at two different
(17:15):
sets of Olympic Games.
Speaker 3 (17:18):
That's that's funny, I was we were having this conversation
this morning. For me, I think every single time, it's
just been being in the right place at the right time.
The story with Finland is a little interesting. It's a
little bit of a gray area. But now that the
(17:39):
und women's hockey team is no longer around I can
tell the story, but essentially they wanted to get into
recruiting in Europe and they wanted they wanted to go
back and forth between Europe and the US, and they
had kind of devised plan where it would be interesting
(18:03):
for them if they put somebody on the staff of
a national team. So you're going to all these tournaments
and you could talk to the players and stuff like that.
And I wasn't really I don't know, like I didn't
really have a name or anything at that point, but
I was always pretty good at the video stuff.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
And so.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
The assistant coach there at North Dakota was the Olympic
coach for Sweden for two Olympic cycles, and so he
knew the guys from Finland really well. And he must
have called them like six times asking if they needed
a video coach, and they said no every single time.
(18:44):
And I still remember the last call because it was
on it was on Skype at that time, and he
told them like, hey, listen, like you guys can go
out after the game and you can drink your beers
and you don't have to worry about doing anything when
you wake up morning, like Max will have everything done
for you and they were like, all right, perfect, So
(19:05):
that's what sold them. And then I went to I
think my first tournament with them was the World Championships,
and so it would have been like the World Championships
probably like a last year. And they were like, hey,
we really liked what you did, Like would you be
interested in coming to another tournament? And I was like yeah.
(19:27):
So the next tournament was Four Nations, which was in
like November, so it'd be right around this time in
the Olympic year, and so I went and they were like, well,
we'd love to have you come to the Olympics, but
we don't we actually we don't know if we can
do it because like the whole thing with the Olympics
is like you only get so many credentials and you
(19:48):
only get so many passes, and you know, government officials
need to take some and they got to rearrange it
and budget and all of that, and it was just
it's so late in November and in an Olympic year.
So they were like, we're gonna kind of do our
work on our end and we'll let you know. And
I didn't hear anything from him for over a month,
(20:10):
and it was Christmas Day. I got an email saying like, yeah,
like you're good to go, Like you can come to
the Olympics if like North Dakota will release you, and
they were they they were like, yeah, that's no problem.
So I ended up getting to go with them to Sochi,
so that was good. That was quite an experience. And
(20:33):
then with China, was actually the head coach of the
Chinese national team was the head coach at University of
North Dakota, so we worked together then obviously, and so
he needed an assistant coach and he called and asked
if I was doing anything. And this was at the
(20:54):
time when I was looking to go to Europe. So
I was like, yeah, I guess China's kind of close
to Europe. And that's kind of how that hole started.
So I was in China whenever COVID started. And then
the next year there wasn't any movements like for coaches
or anything back here or in Europe because nobody wanted
(21:17):
to let guys go and have to pay and blah
blah blah. So I ended up staying one more year
and then it was that summer they called and said, hey,
like you guys can be the coach of the Olympic
team if you guys want to come back. So then
(21:37):
I was like, wow, I might as well go back.
So I went back for a third year with them.
So that's how that happened. So yeah, that was That
was cool. It was a different Olympics in Soulchi because
obviously with all the restrictions and everything, no fans know
anything like that, but it was it was still cool.
Speaker 4 (21:56):
All right, Max, take me into your I just before
I ask you a couple of question. I just want
to make sure you have pretty good familiarity with this
year's roster, right, And not only that, but like you know,
the personalities, not the players, but who they are as guys.
Is that accurate to suggest?
Speaker 3 (22:12):
Yeah? Yeah, yeah for sure.
Speaker 4 (22:14):
Okay, okay, So there was a discussion last week and
I'm going to keep all the names out of it,
but one player emerged as having superior fashion and just
general aesthetics demeanor when he enters a room on the team.
And do you want to take a stab at who
that was? One player on the road runners leading the
(22:36):
way fashion wise?
Speaker 3 (22:39):
I mean, now are you saying like he thinks that
he's leading the way in fashion but he's really not.
Is that what we're getting on.
Speaker 4 (22:49):
No, so he was actually given this by another player.
Another player threw his name in the hat without the
guy who was being crowned even knowing about it.
Speaker 3 (23:00):
Oh so like you're saying he's actually got good fashion.
He doesn't think that he does yet.
Speaker 4 (23:06):
It seems that way.
Speaker 3 (23:06):
But we don't.
Speaker 4 (23:07):
We don't want to. We don't want to just anoint
this person because of one opinion, right, We're trying to
get a very diverse view. So that's why I bring
you in on this.
Speaker 3 (23:17):
So I need to. I mean I would I would say,
like if we're taking like we're taking the euros out
of it, because like that's their own thing. If we're
taking them out of it, I would say, it's probably
got to be Kevin Cannonton.
Speaker 4 (23:30):
That was the name. There you go. So that makes
me think that there is some truth to it because
I kept it very broad. I didn't lead you down
that road at all. And Miya MacGregor told me last
week Kevin connaught and by far has the best fashion,
And it also says he has a pretty nice car,
which kind of elevates his entire look. Can you speak
to that.
Speaker 3 (23:52):
Yeah, I've I've heard the rumor of his car. I've
never seen it personally, I don't to I don't really
see daylight hours with that with mine, uh with my
work hours. But I've heard the rumor of what his
car is, and I can attest that that would probably
help his fashion for sure. But I mean he's he's
(24:15):
for sure probably the guy that I would pick.
Speaker 4 (24:19):
But yeah, there's whiskers in the building. Yeah that Kevin
Kevin has and you you hear.
Speaker 3 (24:26):
That, Yeah, yeah, no, for sure. I mean I think
kind of once you clarified that it were being serious,
we're not in a joking way, like yes, like his
name came came to mind, for sure, so I would say,
I would.
Speaker 4 (24:42):
Say, okay, so let me ask you a few other
questions about the team. Who do you think if hockey
was out of the picture? And I know, talking to
Kevin Rooney, I asked him a similar question and he
was like, what do you mean Hockey's out of the picture?
Like that's my whole life. I don't even know there's
a world out there. I just thought everything was hockey.
So Kevin made he won't be the answer to this,
but take hockey out of it. Who on that team.
(25:04):
Do you think could have been very successful in any
other field, like they just kind of have it hockey,
you know, out of the out of the frame.
Speaker 3 (25:13):
That's a tougher question. That's a tougher question. And the
only reason why is because now like everybody is so
like hockey, hockey, hockey from such a young age that
I would say that there's a vast majority of them
that are probably like, yeah, I didn't know that there
was another world outside of hockey in that you can
(25:35):
take a flight without a team, or that you can
check into a hotel without a team. But I'm gonna
give you an underrated, probably low key answer, and I
would say, Benny McCartney.
Speaker 4 (25:52):
Oh interesting, Now tell us why why do you why
do you say that?
Speaker 3 (25:56):
I think just because of where he is from, you know,
they have that kind of that hard working gene. And
I want to say that his parents are his parents
are farmers. Could be wrong on that, but I'm pretty
sure that they are, or that he lives on a
farm at least, and so I can see him stepping
(26:18):
into that role and being pretty good at it. So
I would I would say that, you know, at least
where I live in North Dakota farmers are pretty successful
and have a not an easy life, but they have
a pretty good life. You know, they work hard, but
they also they got some nice toys too.
Speaker 2 (26:39):
So I got one last one for you, Max, and
then we'll let you go. Tell me about your days
playing hockey Triple A hockey in Michigan. What do you
what do you remember from that time in your hockey
playing career?
Speaker 3 (27:00):
What do I remember from the huts. I think it's
kind of you know, it's interesting, like you have this
conversation with guys. You know, I think I remember more
about you know, being in the locker room and hanging
out and making friends and you know, doing stupid stuff
(27:23):
than the actual hockey. Like I don't don't remember any
you know, big games that we won or anything like that.
It was so long ago, but I just kind of remember,
you know, all the friends that I made and all
the like you know, good times and everything that we had.
I also vividly remember getting to a point in my
(27:46):
own hockey career that I realized, like, hey, some of
my friends are way better at hockey than I am,
and you know, being okay with that, you know, I
think it was it was good to go through that.
It's good to go through that earlier. And I don't
(28:09):
want to say like waste time on it, but like
for me, like understanding how good some of my friends
were and then just pivoting, jumping into coaching and you know,
figuring out a way to still stay involved in it.
And now you know, I'm I'm thirty six years old
and have fifteen years of experience. Like you know, it's
(28:31):
gonna be tough to take away those years of experience,
so you know, being able to kind of jump and
pivoted that was I think big. But yeah, like in
terms of playing hockey and stuff like that, I just remember,
you know, just the good times with the with the
boys and everything like that, making the good the good
friends that I still have now at home.
Speaker 2 (28:52):
So that's all I had for you, David, I think
you got anything else for beautiful Max.
Speaker 3 (28:57):
We appreciate your time.
Speaker 2 (28:58):
I thinks we're sitting down with us and we're sure
is a busy day and best to look this weeknd.
Speaker 3 (29:02):
Thanks guys, appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (29:04):
Back on Roadrunners, Happy Hour on Fox Sports fourteen fifty
am and the iHeartRadio app. James mckewlong Side Dvin Rady
and David. Normally we would take this time to recap
the interview, but I'm going to ask you a question
Kim asked me a couple of weeks ago when we
interviewed Nikki and it got put on Roadrunners social media
because I told our social media guy, just gonna put
(29:25):
this out there. We're going to segue from what I'm
talking about. Ben is our social media admin. Nine times
out of ten somebody calls a team social media admin
runners men. In our case, because we're the Roadrunners runners men,
I have deemed our social media admin the bird whisperer. Okay,
I think that's so. Ben the bird whisper did the
question after practice. I think it was yesterday and Monday,
(29:47):
and it was who on the team would you not
like cook for you? My answer to Kim was Miko Matika.
Michael agreed with me. I want to know what your
answer is, who on the team would you not like
cook free?
Speaker 4 (29:58):
Okay, let me think about this. I'm gonna I'm gonna
I'll get back to you, like very quickly. I just
want to think through my thoughts out loud. If that's okay.
So I want to take Miko because that seems like
that would be kind of unfair, right.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
He also self proclaimed himself as the worst cook on
the team. If you watch the videolia posted, he's straight
out He's like, I'm the worst cook on the team,
so and most.
Speaker 4 (30:18):
So here's what I'm thinking. Okay, here's where I am.
I am not familiar with Russian cuisine, but I've never
exactly heard, Hey, David, what are you doing Friday night?
Let's go down to this new Russian restaurant. It's really great.
Have you ever heard that? Because I haven't so for that,
and I'm twenty and I can't cook at all. Danil
(30:39):
boot is twenty, So I'm thinking if he's anything like me,
plus i've never been to a Russian restaurant, very well
could be my fault, but I'm constrained by my own
knowledge when i answer your question, right, So based on that,
I think I'm going with I don't need Danil cooking
for me, not to say he can't cook it. This
is a guess, but it's an informed guess, and I
don't want to take Miko, So I'm meant to say
(31:00):
I'm a little bit skeptical if de Nil says, hey,
you know, this is what I got. You want to
try it? I think maybe I'll have to pass.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
I think I think that that one I agree with
Russian cuisine. Hey, you want to go to this Russian No,
I can't. I can't say I want to.
Speaker 3 (31:14):
Now what do they think?
Speaker 4 (31:15):
I don't even know?
Speaker 2 (31:18):
Oh man, I don't even something.
Speaker 3 (31:20):
I think.
Speaker 2 (31:20):
I think Russia is a very heavy pescatarian country.
Speaker 4 (31:24):
And and there we go. I'm not a huge fish fan,
so that works out really.
Speaker 2 (31:28):
Well, you're not a fish kind of sewer.
Speaker 4 (31:30):
Well here, well here's my one thing. And somebody I
can't remember who was, somebody with the team was very
upset with me that I don't eat sushi. I think
it was Ken she was. She was not happy.
Speaker 2 (31:41):
I don't blasphem. It's not eating sushi isn't at all.
Speaker 4 (31:44):
And I don't like fish that tastes very fishy, right,
I'll eat fish that doesn't taste that much like fish,
like salmon or white fish, you know, just the stuff
that is more generic and and and well seasoned. I
will eat that. But a tuna mistak that is really
like very much tuna tasting to where you know what
(32:05):
I'm talking about? Where has that very unique flavor. I
don't like that. I don't like that unique flavor, and
that's considered like the high end type. Right, the more
expensive the fish, the less I like it because I
don't like that fish taste, and sushi really excentuates that,
which is why I don't like it. So I'm out
on that. I'm out on the pescatarian thing. I've never
been to a Russian restaurant, and Danil is my age,
(32:25):
so the whole couple altogether, I'm out.
Speaker 2 (32:28):
Okay, that's fair. You know what, I won't even I
won't even ask you twice about that one. Something I
have learned we spend a lot of time together, you
and I talking nine times out of tendance in a
hockey capacity, so we don't get much time to talk
one on one. Something I have learned is both you
and I neither you nor I know what zodiacs have
to do with our personality, but Kim is so heavy
(32:49):
into it that it's now spread into like our like team,
you know, group chat me, You Chase Michael.
Speaker 4 (32:58):
I'm out on the zodiacs too, right, So I understand.
I know I'm a leo. I know the general overarching
themes of what Leo's are. Here's what I push back on.
Somebody being born in August does not determine their behavior. Okay,
I mean, what are we talking about. There's how many
millions I should probably say, maybe almost a billion people
born in August, or we to assume that they're all similar.
(33:20):
And then here's the catch, James, here's my favorite part
about exposing all this. Oh no, you get a whole
assortment of things.
Speaker 3 (33:27):
You have.
Speaker 4 (33:28):
This is your rising, and this is your Mars, and
this is your whatever. And here's what this accomplishes. Because
of this new trend of examining the entire chart. You
get all twelve, You get all twelve. By the time,
there's so many things they look at that you have
every single one. And then you can just cherry pick, well,
I'm a Leo in this regard, I'm this in this regard,
(33:48):
I'm this in this regard, And you know what it
comes down to. No, you're a human being, That's what
it comes down to. And eventually you're gonna find every
characteristic that's ever existed from across the twelve and you've
got it. It's I think it's absolutely absurd and I
recognize and I admire the history of it that this
has been something that humans have thought about for a while.
But James, we also didn't realize that the world was
(34:10):
round until about five hundred years ago. So just because
this dates back centuries, that doesn't make it correct.
Speaker 2 (34:15):
Okay, got me there, I mean you got me there.
I can't even I would apply. I would stand up
and applaud you if it wouldn't kill the audio of
the episode that was that was.
Speaker 4 (34:24):
And look, I feel bad. Here's why I feel bad
doing this because Kim is not here and she doesn't
have an opportunity to defend the astronomy people. So that's
really not right because I really should be a dialogue
and I'm I'm not. I'm not facing any pushback from you,
so for that, I do feel bad. But you asked
me the question. I have to answer it, and maybe
(34:45):
Kim can respond to this next week. But I'm out.
I'm out on astronomy, I'm out on Russian cuisine, anything
else that I can shoot down.
Speaker 2 (34:54):
Now.
Speaker 4 (34:57):
I feel very much like like or something one of
those really negative characters is just like doctor No.
Speaker 2 (35:04):
Yeah, but Screwge, you're Scrooge Scrooge. You're Scrooge of Zodiacs.
Speaker 4 (35:10):
Yeah, I'm out. I don't I'm not buying it.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
One thing I will ask you. It's Mickey and Minnie
Mouse's birthday. So what is your favorite Disney movie?
Speaker 4 (35:20):
Okay, so didn't watch a ton now I have. I
obviously have Disney familiarity. Now, I've never been to Disney World,
never been to Disneyland. I've never been to California, never
been to Disney World.
Speaker 3 (35:30):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (35:30):
Favorite Disney movie? I gotta think about that, because, ah man,
I gotta really jog my memory. I think the most
recent one I probably watched was Frozen, just because of
when it came out. Wasn't a huge fan, but that's
what I saw. Beauty and the Beast not bad. Okay,
Beauty and the Beast is not bad. Kind of a
(35:51):
comeback story there, so I would say that's a contender.
I'm really just trying to jog my memory. But right now,
as they're flooding to me, the one I can rememb
remember watching and enjoying the.
Speaker 3 (36:01):
Most probably Beauty and the Beast. What about you?
Speaker 2 (36:05):
Uh, personally, I'm a big cars guy. I don't know why.
Something about like even queen and in the storyline of
the movie, Cars just kind of draws me in. It's
a I'm a big I'm a big fan of the
movie Cars. I'm gonna go. Cars is on the top
of my list for my favorite Disney movie, just because
they go as a little kid. You know, that movie
came out in oh six and they get as a
four year old. I was just like, wow, racing race cars,
(36:27):
this is so awesome.
Speaker 3 (36:28):
Yeah, no question.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
Just kind of becomes one of the things where it's like,
all right, well, now I have a Now I have
a favorite movie, and uh, you know, now I'm just
like with it. The biggest thing is Cars two is
not a cars movie. It's not a racing movie. It's
a cars movie. It's not a racing movie. It's a
spy movie about cars. And I will die on that hill.
That is one that I'm willing to take to my grave.
Everybody that tells me Cars two is their favorite Disney movie,
(36:52):
I ask them if they're okay, it's kind of like
how you'll shoot down zodiacs, I'll shoot down cars to
being a Cars movie. It's just it's just not the same.
They just don't they don't go hand in hand.
Speaker 4 (37:02):
Now, let me ask you this Finding Nemo. Is that
a Disney movie? It's a pixil Yeah, yeah, okay, Now
I like that. That's a good movie.
Speaker 2 (37:12):
I was Finding a Doory.
Speaker 4 (37:13):
Guy like Finding Dory better I do the the second version.
So you think that's an example of a second movie
that was actually better than the first.
Speaker 2 (37:23):
I think so. I think so, am just like how
I think Toy Story three and Toy Story four were
great movies in regards to what Toy Story one did
for him, right, But Toy Story five them getting into
the electronics, kind of eating into the kids world. They're toys.
I'm excited to see how that one's going to go
totally off. We've gone so far away.
Speaker 4 (37:40):
From that's and that's how that, that's how this, that's
how this happens.
Speaker 2 (37:43):
So you're weird experience. I've steered on that way.
Speaker 4 (37:47):
I know I'm the constant variable in this equation that
I get things off topic. I also have a show
at the University of Arizona for Camp Student Radio, and
I take things way. We were we were trying to
talk about football yesterday and I started ranting a out
network assignments because the Cowboys and the Raiders were on
Monday Night football for reason. I was breaking down the
map and how there should have been a flex and
(38:09):
it didn't happen, and then we were talking about market sizes.
It was it happened quick. We got away.
Speaker 3 (38:14):
I will football fast.
Speaker 2 (38:16):
I will say, well, you and I talked about in
the studio and I don't know if I don't know
if Michael caught this during the away series this past weekend.
Was what time and what channel U of A will
be playing Baylor on on Saturday? We could fit. We
we built that scheme. Yeah, we made that schedule perfect.
I wonder how many other picks you have that written
(38:36):
down somewhere that pig nail got correct.
Speaker 4 (38:39):
We nailed it.
Speaker 2 (38:40):
Yeah, high five.
Speaker 4 (38:42):
No, I appreciate it. I do appreciate that. And so
the good news is what we were The reason we
set out to accomplish that was we want to see
if I had a conflict on Saturday, because Arizona Baylor
is on Saturday, and obviously the road Runners the first
of two home games against the Colorado Eagles is this Saturday,
which we'll get to in a moment. And so I
would like to be president for both, but if they're
(39:03):
at the same time, that can't happen. Now, we did
process of elimination, figured out where the other Big twelve
teams are playing, and I concluded that Arizona would be
playing eleven o'clock am on TNT based on the desirability
of other games were lack thereof, and that ended up
being exactly where they are. And also, did you see
the news And I don't want to spend too much
time on this, but Arizona Stadium now changing their name
(39:23):
to Casino del Sol Stadium. That was kind of a
big story here on campus.
Speaker 2 (39:27):
Yesterday ASU changed theirs from Sun Devil State in Mountain America,
staying a couple of years ago. So it happens Brights
get bought out. Yeah, Max was a great interview. Personally
loved that.
Speaker 3 (39:38):
It's fun.
Speaker 4 (39:38):
Yeah, he was. He brought some a different perspective right
that we've talked to some players that you and Kim
had Pozzi earlier. He's kind of evaluating the team very
much intently, but just from a different view. So it
was interesting to get that, which is why I wanted
to ask some player related questions to see if he
sees things the same as the players. So I think
(39:59):
the fact that we have a video coach and a
player giving Kevin Connaughton some real props, I think that
solidifies his role there. And I on asking Pozzy this weekend,
but I don't even know if that's necessary at this
point because we've got a lot of data that is
that is coming back on Kevin.
Speaker 2 (40:16):
Essaying the fact that I think I'm doing where we
talked about, I'm doing pre game Saturday because you'll be coming,
by the way, Can I just say the calls where
you come from a U of a games and you're
disheveled are perfect. So I'm not at all bashing you
for missing Saturday's pregames. I'm down to do it. What
I'm really looking forward to, though, is that answer from Potzi.
But the other thing I'm really looking forward to is
(40:37):
this upcoming weekend against Colorado. Right, we weren't just splitting
Colorado last week. Now we got two more against the Eagles,
kicking off a five game week of American Thanksgiving. It's
Roadrunners Happy Hour. James Mackie alongside David Meridian. David this
past weekend tuson works of split with the reigning champions
of the Pacific Division, Colorado Eagles. This upcoming weekend Saturday, Sunday, Saturday,
(40:59):
Barbie Night, Pink at the Rank. We're excited for that
Sunday Hockey Fights Caants Night also against Colorado. Will jump
forward Wednesday, a winning Wednesday against San Diego and then
the following weekend Friday Saturday, a two game set with
the reigning, defending undisputed champions of the American Hockey League
and the Abbotsford Canucks. What a great week of hockey
(41:19):
we have on top, David.
Speaker 4 (41:20):
It's very exciting. More action coming to the TCC, and
that's been the theme this year, right. The Roadrunners have
spent a lot of time into some They've done well
on the road, just six games three to two to
one away from the Desert. But now they come back.
They had a very energized crowd here for the finale
against Coachella Valley. Kevin Canaughton got them reped up with
a little fight there against the Firebirds, and I think
(41:41):
the team is feeling pretty good right. Jackson Staubrig just
had that shut out victory as first victory of the season.
He did it in dramatic, impressive fashion by putting up
a donut against the division leaders right now the standard
on the West Coast for the American Hockey League. So
I think this is a team that feels pretty good
about themselves and they're ready to deliver in front of
a home crowd. With five consecutive games coming up here
(42:02):
in Tucson.
Speaker 2 (42:03):
It will be very exciting to see how they piggyback
on Stobbs' performance from that shutout victory, his first of
the season, his season high and saves. In that game,
Colorado's offense looked flat. Their number one goaltender, Eat Sakposh,
was beatable for Tucson. Now you're at the point where
you've seen both of their goaltenders. Right, we talked about
this just a little bit. I'm sure you guys will
(42:24):
talk about it with Kevin when you sit down with
him for the preview show. Now you've seen both of
their goaltenders. What do the Roadrunners kind of have to
do to expose some of that plane and what do
you think they can do to build off of the
momentum that they brought They bring into the series.
Speaker 4 (42:39):
Well, they had chances, right, They made things happen in
both games. They were much more opportunistic, as Steve Poven
would say, in the second game, they got more out
of their opportunities. But really I think they had more
looks in game one and just a couple of close calls.
It's doing all the little things right, generating looks, getting
out in front, as Zach Storteini would say, getting shots
towards the net. But you know, if they continue to
(43:01):
just play the game the right way, don't be overwhelmed
by the ability on the other side. Just this is
a talented group. I mean, there's guys throughout the roster
that are capable of making things happen. So they are
very much in the same discussion as Colorado, and I
think if they can just execute, do the basics right,
let the game come to them, that the looks will come,
and then it's just capitalizing.
Speaker 1 (43:22):
Right.
Speaker 4 (43:22):
If you have a window there when you're playing against
a team like Colorado, you want to take it. If
you have a little sliver of open net, you want
to make sure you get it through.
Speaker 2 (43:29):
We'll jump forward to the next weekend series that went
against Abbots for decimated by injuries. Right now, the Vancouver
Canucks are hurting in the NHL Abbits For just gets
Victor Mansini back from the NHL. He's one of their
first returners on that kind of mark. Abits is not
off to a very hot start this season, considering the
fact that they are defending their title that they came
(43:49):
out with last season. Also, Tucson took them to the
brink in Round one last season, a matchup that we
are waiting for, something that's really going to show us
what kind of caliber team Tucson has. What are you
almost looking forward to when Habits for It comes to town?
Speaker 4 (44:03):
Well, I think that this is an opportunity for the
Roadrunners to get some revenge, right. I believe that they
were their season was ended on account of Abbotsford last year,
and they were very competitive with them. But I think
there's some unfinished business there. So I'm looking forward to
the conclusion of that storyline, picking up where that left off.
And also there's an opportunity to strike. You mentioned at James.
(44:23):
Vancouver absolutely decimated and so this is when you want
to play the Canucks Abbotsford, right, you want to get
them while Vancouver is reeling. Why do you think that
there's an opportunity there, Because if I had to make
a prediction, I would say come January or February, once
the Vancouver Canucks are recovered, I think Abbitsford will start
to resemble the team we saw last year. But right
(44:43):
now there is an opportunity, right I think the road
Runners probably have the on paper advantage, and they also
have the emotional motivation to try to avenge last season.
So I think there's both an opportunity and rightful motivation
for a very positive outcome for the road Runners in
that series.
Speaker 2 (45:00):
All right, Well, that is the breakdown of it two
against Colorado this weekend Wednesday before the American Thanksgiving against
the San Diego Goals, the following Black Friday and Saturday
Glow Night, and then I believe Saturday is Saturday. I
think Saturday is Glow Night anyway, no matter what tickets
available to all of those on Tucson Roadrunners dot Com,
(45:23):
Barbie Night, Saturday, Hockey Fights, Cancer Night Sunday this upcoming
weekend in the final two of four consecutive in the
home and home with the Colorado Eagles. Anything else to add, David, I.
Speaker 4 (45:35):
Got nothing you got. I think you covered every base there.
Speaker 2 (45:38):
Beautiful thing. That'll do it for Runners?
Speaker 1 (45:40):
Happy.
Speaker 2 (45:40):
I thank you for joining us on behalf of my
partner David Rady, and our producer Michael Goodrich and Max Merkowitz,
team video coach who sat down and joined us for
the first segment. We appreciate you tuning in. We will
see you next Tuesday.
