Speaker 1 (00:00):
When you want more road Runners, We've got more road Runners.
This is the Breakdown edition of Roadrunners Weekly with James
mackett and your new best friend, play best friend, David MURRADI. Again,
the guys are already talking, so let's join them right
here on the Breakdown.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Welcome. Actually another edition of the Roadrunners recap James McKie
alongside David Meridian. David a season unlike any other, three
consecutive splits for Tucson, one on the road followed by
two at home. Let's talk about this series split. Four
goals against allowed per game is what they were averaging

(00:38):
coming into it. They won by four Friday and then
allowed three against on Saturday, only allowing four for the
entirety of the series as a whole.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
I think what it comes down to, James, and we'll
get to the defense in a second. But as we're
assessing the progress of this team as the season's going on,
you have can they play a complete game, win it
in regulation? Right, accomplish that on Friday, and then the
next question is can they play a complete series? And
that's kind of the last box to check. They play
a complete game on Friday, but then they don't show

(01:10):
up the first two periods on Saturday. So the next step,
like you said, three splits, is can they play a
full series Manitoba one in four on the season, So
you have an opportunity there, you think, as the better
team at home, to play a complete series and see
if you can get your first sweep as opposed to
a split. As for the defense, I thought they skated better,

(01:31):
positioning was improved, made it tougher for the opponent. That's
a very simple phrase that I like. Better resistance and
it showed in the results. Two goals per game as
opposed to four and not so religant on their goaltenders.
I think they still need to play better defense in
front of Jackson's Stauber, but a good effort from Volalta
on Friday Night and excellent defense for those three periods

(01:52):
in the series opener, and like I said, their most
complete victory of five to one win on Friday.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
The thing we're looking for two most is how this
team's special teams unit played right Friday night two for
four on the power play, five for six on the kill,
boom staunch great Saturday night, different story, four for five
on the kill, zero for five on the power play

(02:19):
all together nine for eleven on the kill, that stepped
up significantly. Their penalty kill got much better. Their powerplay
still was lackluster, going two for nine on the weekend.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
As a whole, the penalty killed generally was strong. Now
nine to eleven sounds really good, but if you look
at the landscape of the league, that's roughly it's just
above eighty percent. That is generally, eighty percent is kind
of the middle of the of the pack line. That's
the expectation. Everything off of eighty percent is either you know,

(02:50):
above average if it's above eighty percent, or below average
if it's blow But that's kind of the line of mediocrity.
So Tucson on the season is right around eighty percent
on the kill. Last again a little bit above, so
that's a good thing. Then you have the power play right.
The play Friday was terrific and you could go across
the board when I say it was a complete game.
The kill was strong on Friday, the power play looked good,

(03:11):
the deep general defense look good. Five but everything was good.
Goaltending was great. Saturday had opportunities to get back in
that game in the third period. Three power plays in
the third period and they came up empty. So that's
the place you look in my opinion for the loss
on Saturday. How can they be more consistent on the
power plays? The question, James, because we have seen ability.

(03:32):
The power play was excellent on Friday, two for four.
The power play was excellent in Ontario. It was even
good in the preseason against Henderson, but it was very
quiet against Calgary and when they needed it most in
the third period on Saturday, it was also very quiet.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Tucson sixteenth in the league at eighty point six percent
on the kill, fifteenth in the league at twenty point
eight percent on the power play. So special teams one
of the things that we really have been keeping an
eye on. Unfortunately didn't step up like we said. The
other thing being the youth on this team. Going to
a positive. The youth on this team took a significant

(04:09):
step up, not only in Daniel Boot but also in
you know, the guys alongside him are been due to
notched a couple points, Mikhail Koontz got his first career goal.
These are guys that spent a little bit more time
on the ice, and we talked about it pregame Saturday
fifty five percent of the goals scored by twos on
this season by kids twenty four and younger. When it
came down to looking at the total spread of what

(04:31):
has and hasn't happened, how games haven't haven't really gone
the way of the Roadrunners.

Speaker 3 (04:39):
And that's exactly what you're looking for. If you're the
Utah Mammoth, you have a developmental team, you have your
minor league affiliate, what you for young players. HyG drafted
somebody like Daniel Boot who was a first round pick
to be performing well and the team, and that's really
one of the positives for the road Runners. I think
it's the reason that they're faring well so far in

(04:59):
the Pacific Division is the young talent that you're investing
in is performing. And that number is even above fifty
five percent now because their only goal on Saturday was
Noel Nord and he checks that box. And now twelve
of their twenty one goals this season by players twenty
four or younger. So absolutely the production has been there
and really the improvement for the younger players. James, the

(05:23):
third line fourth line two consists of primarily younger players,
and Koontz is probably the best example. I think he's
gotten better and better as the season's going on. There
was a most Improved Player award and only six games in.
I would go probably Koons. I think his presence on
the ice has been stronger. I think he's starting to
get a little bit more comfortable with the AHL. So

(05:45):
I think these younger players are starting to get comfortable
and improve, and ultimately, if that continues to be the case,
then the road Runner should have success because it's generally
a young team and it's a team that needs their
younger players to con.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
The biggest story of the weekend in my book, would
have to be Volalta's shutout through not only one period
of play on Night one, but two periods of play
on Night one.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
We talked about it.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
Roby Arventi scored at thirteen thirty seven in the first
period on the power play for Bakersfield in Night one.
Out of position matt Volalta, if he's in position, think
about that. If he's in position, Matthew Volalta goes from
being a one goal game to a shutout. And I
was talking to video coach Kyle Sheebley. He said, look,
this felt like it was a shutout. Still Volalta played

(06:37):
on his head. He really kept Tucson in that game,
and to be honest with you, he's the reason Tucson
won that game by a margin larger than just one goal,
and really the reason that game didn't go into overtime.
Because there's a lot of really good chances Bakersfield produced.
Let's as to look past Bakersfields team. They have a
really good roster, but Matt Volalta was the brick wall
between the pipes that Tucson needed on Friday to be

(07:01):
staunch and to win that game in regulation and buy
more than one goal.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
The thing I would say, James is Bakersfield had the frustration.
You could just see it on the ice of a
team that's being shut out and their general senses they
would skate back to the bench or even right after
pucks were gloved up. That kind of sigh of disappointment
resembled a team with a zero on the scored and

(07:27):
Matthew Vilallata, no question about it. He had a brilliant performance.
And I think one of the things he does really
well is he plays bigger than he is and he's
not a small guy. But we've bumped into him once
or twice throughout the arena, warming up before a game
or whatever it may be. He's pretty thin. He's a
tall guy, but he's really not that wide, but he

(07:48):
plays like it, and he does a great job using
his equipment and his physical attributes that he does have
to his advantage getting back into position really quickly. I
think he moves very well, so he does a great
job using his strengths. And really it was just clutch.
There's no better word than that. When the saves needed
to be made, he was there, kept his poise really well.

(08:11):
Because Bakersfield had real opportunities that there were a few
times where it wasn't pretty two on one or late
plays that came together, and he always kept his cool
and was right where he needed to be.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
Something we talked a lot about during the first two
series Ontario and Calgary was the transition game, and we
saw it on Basha's first career goal against Calgary. They
he not only caught Tucson in transition, he skated between
all five of the road Runners that were on the ice.
Their transition game felt a little cleaner this series, if

(08:46):
I do say so myself. It felt as if they're
a little bit more liquid. They kind of got some
of that changing down. We have to believe that something
that head coach Steve Potvan probably worked on during the
week of practice. But not only that, it really felt
like that also helped keep Tucson in a position of
not control necessarily, but closeness when it came to proximity

(09:07):
on the ice versus off the ice and in changes,
especially on some odd rush odd man advantages. There weren't
many odd man rushes for Bakersfield this series.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
The two on one breakaways are reducing, but they're still there.
Less of them, I think are the case of longes
and just general maybe player defenseman get too aggressive in
the offensive zone, or you know, just general bad luck.
But the breakaways are still I would say an issue.
I think if if you went back and counted how

(09:40):
many times the opponent gets an odd man rush compared
to Tucson, I think probably almost every game the Roadrunners
are at a depsit in that category. It'd be an
interesting thing to know, but based on my observation covering
the team, I think that's a pretty safe assumption. The
line changes have gotten better each series. That's important. I
think a bit more discipline of not sinking too far

(10:03):
to the offensive zone would be the last kind of
thing to improve on, as that is considered turned but
I like that they're an aggressive team. I'm certainly not
discouraging playing aggressive and trust score and the road Runners
are a highly effective team. They're one of the higher
scores in the Pacific Division and in the AHL as
a whole. So this is necessarily bad. Sometimes it's just

(10:24):
a consequence of their style of play, but some of
the break necessary and it still could be reduced.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
And one thing to really look at is coming into
this series, Bakersfield and Tucson were five and six in
the Pacific Division. I believe four and five. They finish
at that same mark. Tucson three to two and one
seven points on the air five eight three win percentage,
bakers Field three to two and zero on this season,
a six hundred winning percentage, but they're only at six points.

(10:52):
That one overtime loss for Tucson, well, it still counts
as a loss was a big loss in the in
the terms of you come away with a third point
in that weekend Manitoba one four and one. That'll be
touched on in our preview show. Right in the middle
of the pack is where Tucsons tending to stay on

(11:13):
all of the stats that we've talked about. We talked
about their pks right in the middle of the pack,
their power plays right there as well. Now the record
and their points put them right in that same place.
Lingering around that mark, I feel like will be something
that will benefit them as the season continues. You know,
weird as that may sound, I feel like hanging around

(11:34):
in that position of you're in fourth, you're in fifth,
you're in third, you know, kind of jumping around. This
is a tight knit division. We had a tie for
the top three places the really second and third coming
into Saturday's game. Now Ontario and Henderson both have nine points,
so they're tied. Tucson's not out. This season's very early.
I don't think there's ever going to really be a

(11:55):
point where we count Tucson out of the race of
making the jump up, except for or if Colorado continues
to produce at the pace they're at.

Speaker 3 (12:02):
Saying at five and two on the regular season, Colorado
is a very no question about that. But the Runners
have the talent. James and especially something we touched on
earlier in the umpires to constantly be album. I think
that the runners and Steve Podvin alluded to what I'm

(12:25):
gonna say as well in a Saturday's pregame show when
I asked him about being had for a second in
the vision, I said, how do you know what the
response from to that? And how do you view it?

Speaker 1 (12:37):
Right?

Speaker 3 (12:38):
Is it? Are you happy to be there looking to
get first place? You know? I was just curious because
sometimes you know, coach a famous coaching cliches they're never satisfied,
right if they're in first, they want to be in
first by more if they're inside, rather be in for
whatever is never satisfied what you are. He didn't necessarily
say that. I think more of what he was trying
to get at is he belong where we are, and

(12:58):
we need to do everything it takes to continue to improve,
because if you're not improving, then you're going to drop.
So maybe to do everything it takes to maintain our
status improved or play and recognize that the team belongs
where they are. There is talent on this team to
be in the top the division, competing for that number
one spot, and a very important aspect to competing and

(13:19):
doing that is believing that you deserve to be there,
and so I think that that is something he's trying
to get through that. Yeah, the team has been making
the playoffs in recent years, but it's usually like what
we saw last year, where it's sneaking in the last weekend,
and I think Steve Podven is trying to say this
team is better than that, and rather than spending the

(13:41):
last weekend trying to get into the number seven spot,
you know, maybe they should be more concerned about going
after the top dogs.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
One thing that helps that Colorado losing to Rockford on Saturday.
By the way, I don't know if you knew that
five to two or five to two record for Colorado
is catchable. So still again really early, three to two
and one still an opportunity. They have to play Colorado
a couple times this season, so there's an opportunity for
them to catch and or surpass that. Mark David, any

(14:10):
final thoughts before we depart and prepare for Manitoba Tuesday Wednesday.

Speaker 3 (14:15):
Well, we're gonna have the podcast coming up tomorrow with
the broadcaster for Manitoba, so we'll certainly have a more
in depth book. So if you're looking to hear about
that matchup. You're gonna want to listen to the Between
the Benches podcasts a little bit at a different time, James,
because of the nature of the series Tuesday Wednesday instead
of Friday Saturday, so we'll have that coming out on Monday.
So if you're looking for that more in depth interview,

(14:37):
certainly going to want to listen to that same places
as this show. But I'm looking forward to seeing if
the Roadrunners, ken like I said, continue to improve continued checkboxes,
with the next box being play a complete series. They
finally played a complete game. Now it's time to play
two in a row and not split a series. Not
coming with to with four.

Speaker 2 (15:02):
If you haven't already gotten your tickets to be sure
to get him at Tucson Roadrunners dot com to join
