Speaker 1 (00:00):
When you want more road Runners, We've got more road Runners.
This is the Breakdown edition of Roadrunners Weekly with James
mackintt and your new best friend play best friend, David Murrady. Again,
the guys are already talking, so let's join them right
here on the Breakdown.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Hello, and welcome to another episode of The Roadrunners Breakdown.
James McKie, David Maradi in here with you, David, let's
talk about it.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
Tucson goes one zero to one in this series.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
The overtime went on Saturday, in overtime loss on Sunday.
We kind of talked about it intermittently on the broadcast
the overtime.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Good play both ways.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
The biggest gripe of the weekend was puck movement on
the power play.

Speaker 4 (00:43):
Yeah, that was my biggest gripe for sure, and we
saw them struggle on the power play. James, that had
Mitiga scored in the aftermath of one of their earlier
power plays yesterday, but by the books, no power play
goals this weekend. And conversely, Calgary, I don't believe they
scored on the power play yesterday, but they had two
power play goals Saturday, and I just thought that they

(01:04):
moved the puck a lot crisper and quicker on the
power play and generated better opportunities. And in the first
game the road Runners had several opportunities with just three
defenders on the ice. So I think, you know, a
little bit more speed, a little bit more movement off
the puck, and just quicker, you know, more sun movements.
There was one shot I don't remember who took it.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
It was kind of down.

Speaker 4 (01:27):
By the far corner from our view and was a
very sudden shot and a nice saved made by Owen. Say,
you know, more of that, I would encourage if they can,
you know, get cross ice passes, less station to station
and more just unexpected movement.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Those two goals on Saturday, nonetheless coming in the third
period to bring us from four to one to four
to three before Rory Carrin's got his ninety eighth career
point and history making point for the Calgary Wranglers. Now
on Sunday, they did go three for three on the
kill in their first period alone, five or five overall,

(02:01):
Calgary held scoreless on the power play. The same thing
goes the other way for Tucson, though their power play
oh for seven on the weekend as a whole, they
came into the weekend eighth in the AHL safe to
assume no fall from that marker. What are some things
you think need to be changed when it comes to
the power play to maybe alternate that and against Bakersfield,
especially with a goaltender like Connor Ingram for one of

(02:23):
those two nights, it's gonna take more shots on net obviously.
But we talked a lot about puck movement as well
being a problem on the power play.

Speaker 4 (02:32):
Yeah, puck movement's an issue. I want to go back
to the kill. A terrific job yesterday five or five,
like you said, and to me, I thought they had
great lane integrity right. There was very few cross ice
passes allowed. They were positioned where they needed to be,
which is certainly what you want to see. And this
is very basic and fundamental. But they cleared the puck

(02:52):
often when they were on the penalty kill, and I
think a few of the power plays three or four
are clears in just a two minute stretch and that's terrific.
Every time you clear, you account for about twenty seconds
coming off at least, so you know they're doing all
the things right. Yesterday on the kill and absolutely you're correct.
The puck movement I think needs to be quicker, and
the biggest thing to me, James, is just not being

(03:15):
so predictable with where it's going, you know, not telegraphing things,
some deception, obviously quick movement, because the thing is, when
you have a man advantage, you want to get the
players out of position. You want to get the goaltender
out of position. The best way to get the goaltender
out of position is sudden, quick movements, you know, passes
that travel a good distance, because then the goalie has

(03:37):
to reposition his body. And I thought that that was missing,
but it wasn't missing earlier in the season. So I
don't think they're off by much. I think it's a
small modification that they'll try to make this week in practice.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Tucson went into the weekend sixth in the Western Conference
and then fell down to or actually jumped up to fourth.
They now sit forth that's specific rankings two to one
and one. On the season, they are two to one
in one with Henderson and Ontario, both who suffered losses
this weekend.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
The number one team in the division.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
You might ask the Colorado Eagles, who put up seven
that first night against Calgary and then continued their high
scoring streak as the year as the weekend really went on.
With a team like Bakersfield playing in the fifth position,
they've only played three games. They're two to one on
the season with a point sixty six to seven win percentage.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
They're on twelve goals against thirteen goals for very close margins.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
When it comes down to it, Tucson's offense was very
potent in this past weekend, put the puck in the
net a lot, obviously, two really high scoring games five
to four nine one four three nine two. But when
it really came down to it, it was their defense
and getting caught in transition that cost them, especially on
Andrew Basho's first goal on Sunday.

Speaker 4 (04:53):
Yeah, and you can't criticize their offense, right even the
whole season, they've scored five goals twice two and three.
You got it, that's an average of well above three
goals per game. So that's not the issue. And you
mentioned twelve goals or was it twelve or thirteen goals
four for Bakersfield, So probably going to be a high
scoring series just based on those, you know, very basic numbers.

(05:14):
I thought their transitions were better. Now the transitions were
rough against Ontario. I thought they improved in that metric
going into this series, but still at times, you know,
breakaways that don't need to happen were there. And there
was even another goal. It wasn't Basha. I don't recall
who scored it, James, but it was the player who

(05:35):
kind of evaded through multiple road runners and nobody could
stop the puck. And that's pretty elementary too, So I
think again, these are these are basic things that can
be corrected, stopping the pucket and transitioning properly, resistance into
the defensive zone. Their resistance that they had preventing Calgary
from breaking in was strong the first two periods of

(05:56):
the first game, and then you know, I think they
just got a little bit loose with that. But you're
just trying to make it harder for the other team, right,
That's really the key on defense is make it when
the other team is trying to establish and make that
a challenge when they try to generate opportunities, have good
positioning and lay in integrity to make that difficult and
allow your goaltender to be square. So you know that

(06:18):
some of that's just a little bit off on their breakdowns,
and that's why they've given up i think four goals
in every game this year.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
That first weekend of the year, we saw a lot
we didn't like right on the road in Ontario learning
to play as a group, A lot.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
Of it kind of stepped up.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
One of the things we talked about, especially, was how
fast they were making line changes. We talked to Kevin
Rooney about it on Thursday at the face Off Gala.
Their line changes got quicker this weekend. They were much
faster on the ice and off the ice. They rotated
groups really well, and that ended up leading to a
lot of scoring opportunities for Tucson.

Speaker 4 (06:54):
Yeah, and I asked Steve Potvin about that point blank right.
There was no secret James that we were not pleasing,
and he wasn't pleased with the line changes either. I mean,
he knows what he's looking at for sure, and it
wasn't good enough. It was allowing opportunities for Ontario and
it was preventing Tucson from having those high quality opportunities.
So it was objectively better, I mean, much much better
on their changes. It was crisper, quicker, cleaner, you know, whatever.

(07:17):
Adjective you want to use, and I just think that's
a matter of rust. Right, you play two preseason games.
Now that's a chemistry thing too, James, because the line
change involves a minimum of six people, right, so they
only need to be on the same page. They need
to accomplish their task in a very timely manner, and
so getting on the same page there, I think you'll

(07:39):
get better and better as the season goes on. I'm
sure they worked on it over the week and absolutely
it was better than the series against Ontario.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
And one of the things Potvan said that really kind
of stuck with me this weekend. Well, first of all,
it was really big to see the goal scored by
Miko Matika that first one of the night, for Tusson
to open the scoring, and then popin in yesterday's postgame
presser said, I'm keeping an eye on our puck management.

(08:07):
Are we being disciplined in practice? If we're not, there
has to be consequences. There has to be a solution
to not taking penalties again. One of the higher penalties
teams in the league last year, a lot of time
spent in the penalty box. It did bite them again
on Saturday. It looked like they kind of tightened up
their kill on Sunday. What are some of the ways
that you can see guys kind of avoiding taking penalties

(08:30):
heading into next weekend and then weekends on as the
season continues to progress.

Speaker 4 (08:35):
Well, the first thing is the penalties that simply don't
need to happen. I think there was a trip maybe
by Anyabucci, not necessary right, not out of position. It's
just kind of a bad habit, so to speak. It's
just unforced. So you can't live with those. Those are
not acceptable.

Speaker 3 (08:53):
But every once in a.

Speaker 4 (08:54):
While, those a competitive penalty or so forth. The bad luck,
the delay of game penalties, it is what it is.
I think the one that they had went into the bench,
so it's not like it got shot over the boards.
That's just kind of a tough break. I don't know
how Steve Podvin, you know, thinks that those are also preventable.
I tend to think that's just bad luck. You know,
It's not like Calgary is not trying to clear the
puck as well, and there's happens to hit the glass

(09:16):
and the Roadrunners goes into the bench. But the penalties
where you're at a position, right, that's fundamental and fixable,
and the sloppy ones that I think coach was referring
to that simply just don't need to happen your hooks,
your trips when your positioning is fine. It's just like
I said, a bad habit. Those need to be tightened up. Now, yeah,
there were five or five on a kill, but those

(09:37):
are ten minutes where you're not trying to score in
a game where the Roadrunners were playing behind for more
than half of the game, So it's it's substantial despite
the fact that they didn't allow power play goal, so
it definitely needs to be improved. And they gave up
two power play goals on Saturday and that was the
reason that they didn't have a regulation victory.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Two soon took not one, but two delay of game pounalties,
both off the stick of magazine. By the way, the
one on Sunday, we thought they said was tipped into
the bench originally, and then they changed it during the
break to be a delay of game for mag Zuber.
So that's one of the ones where it's gonna be
really hard to obviously, like you said, kind of thwart
and that's kind of one of the biggest things that

(10:16):
we've seen as the year so far has progressed, is like, look,
you know, this is a team that has a lot
of talent. These guys are fast, these guys fly around
the ice. They've got big body guys. Anyabuchi's a big
body guy. Didn't drop the gloves on Saturday. It took
I think less than seven minutes for him to drop
the gloves on Sunday. And he and Galant did not

(10:36):
just drop the gloves on Sunday. They were throwing haymakers
at one another on Sunday. That was a way for
Anyabuchi to try and get the boys rolling. The same
thing for Alex Galot too. On Calgary, he knew, hey, look,
you know, everybody's kind of come out flat. The first
period was very quiet except for those three penalty kills
by Tucson, and honestly, the star of the first period,
if we were just handing out three stars per period,

(10:59):
was Jackson's my eyes.

Speaker 4 (11:00):
Especially, Yeah, Stalbur got up to a quick start, and
you have to give him credit. If a team is
five for five on the kill, odds are the goaltender
played a role in that, right. I don't think that's
a hot take. And some really good shots he faced.
I think two of the three goals he gave away
were on breakaways, so that's that is what it is.
He made a few great saves in overtime before the

(11:22):
game winner for Calgary by sea check, which was another
really good shot in a puck that was bouncing. It
was a few inches off the ground I think when
he made contact with it. So I don't think the
loss has anything to do with Jackson Stauburgh. Like you said,
in the first period, he was brilliant and I think
the Roadrunners should be really appreciative James that they have
two goalies that they're confident in turning to. Because the

(11:43):
nature of the AHL is lots of back to back games.
It's not like the NHL, where teams kind of complain
about back to back games. They often don't have them here. Generally,
that's the way it's going to be. You're gonna play
Friday Saturday or Saturday Sunday, usually Friday Saturday, and having
two goaltenders that you can play on each day, and
I think that's gonna be the game plan for Tucson

(12:03):
is terrific, especially if one of the guys has to
go up. You know to the big club if there's
an injury or other circumstances, They're in a really good
position there, and I think both of them are very
capable of going out and getting a win. And the
same I think is true for Calgary. What we saw
a Prosbatov and Owen Say. I thought Owen Say was
really impressive, a young player that they're excited about, and

(12:24):
then they have a veteran so that's a nice mix too.
But certainly the Roadrunners are not at a disadvantage with
their goaltenders in my view, and they've got two guys
they can lean on.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
Very exciting weekend of hockey. Nonetheless, it was great to
be back in the CCC. It was great to see
the building packed this weekend as well. Just kind of
one of those things where it's like, you know, you
don't really realize how potent is the word that comes
to mind, but how dedicated a fan base is in
Tucson until you're at a game and then you're like, oh,
my goodness, this is this is one of the things.

Speaker 3 (12:55):
It was loud.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
That building was loud, and we're wearing noise canceling headsets
and that building was still loud.

Speaker 3 (13:01):
All weekend, So definitely something the cow bells, James, they oh,
they love, they love their cowbells.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
That has been the biggest thing I can remember from
Two Soon games is the cow bell is constant.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
When it comes to the TCC.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
We'll take a look now quickly, both at the league
standings and in the division standings. The Western Conference, Tucson
sits seventh, so it's a surmountable loss. The Pacific Division
seven teams make the playoff cut. Tucson currently sitting in
that fourth spot, Calgary now in the seventh spot, Bakersfield
in this upcoming weekend in the fifth spot. So it's

(13:36):
gonna be fun to watch the division standings kind of
continue to shape up. To be honest with you, I
think the first test we're really going to see two
Soon handles when Colorado comes to town in November.

Speaker 4 (13:46):
Yes, Colorado. They look like the top dog right now Atbtsford.
I think is in the conversation too of Colorado. They've
been impressive. They had no issue with Calgary. I believe
they may have played Coachella Valley over the weekend, correct
me if I'm wrong, and played very well against them.
I think they're still Colorado is still looking for their
first loss this year. I don't think that'll be the

(14:07):
case come November, but the point remains their very impressive
team and it will be a good test for the Roadrunners.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
Colorado lost this past weekend to Ontario with two goals
in the third period, both by Samuel Bulduke, one of
which on the power play. So Ontario's power play continued
to be potent, and it would appear Colorado's penalty kill
kind of lackluster when it came down to it in
the third period. The only other thing about that is,
and we didn't talk much about it, that five on
three on Saturday and then the four on three and

(14:35):
overtime really the kryptonite for twoson this past weekend.

Speaker 4 (14:40):
Yeah, I mean krypton. I didn't They're lucky it didn't
cost them and they were able to get the win
in overtime despite having a four on three advantage.

Speaker 3 (14:47):
But the game.

Speaker 4 (14:48):
Shouldn't see overtime if you're up by one with a
five on three, and that's the situation. The Roadrunners roomed
with about six minutes to play, and again Steve Popp
and he said that they were just too deliberate and
looking for the perfect shot, and I don't know how
you're going to find the perfect shot with the speed
they were operating at, And that to me was what
didn't make a lot of sense, not from the coaching steps,

(15:10):
just from the players. Right, if you're going to be
methodical and try to just find that one opportunity with
a half open net, it's not likely to happen at
the speed they were operating with. So yeah, I think
that that those are two minutes that they want back
because they had the five on three James for a
minute fifty two seconds. It's not like it was five
on three for twenty seconds. You know, if you have
a five on three for a minute fifty two seconds,
I think the expectation should be that you go out

(15:31):
there and get a goal. And that's almost like a
warm up drill before the game starts, when they're just
testing the goalie to you know, let them feel out
some pucks. Yeah, that is going to be a situation
that you got to close that one out right there
at five to three, and it didn't happen. They were
lucky to squeak away with the winning overtime, but they
allowed Calgary to get a point out of that, and

(15:51):
that matters because they're in the same division and every
game they play is divisional, so it could be an
influential point at the end of the year.

Speaker 3 (15:57):
We'll see well.

Speaker 2 (15:59):
