All right, all right, all right, Yes, indeed, you are
the author of your story, of your journal. In this journal,
you will get to know yourself better, and who better
to get to know.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Halloween. It's a good night, but it certainly comes with
a bit of stress, doesn't it. School pick up, and
then soccer practice, and then trying to get some real
food into the kids before they gorge themselves on lollies
while the other kids are knocking on the door asking
for lollies. Then getting three kids and mom and dad
dress with makeup and hair paint. It's a lot. The
one job I shouldn't have been put in charge of
(00:38):
is the hairspray. My wife said you need to use
a towel. I said, no, I don't. Turns out I
did as I pushed the triggers frade it all over
Brendo's fresh makeup. But with that, Sarah's outfit really jumped
up again, instantly turning into a convincing angry ghul Oh.
She said she was wild. She did all the makeup,
everything I spray painted in her face.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
I saw here. She looked nothing like her go. She
looked like a very cool Daphne. She really suited.
Speaker 4 (01:06):
That the makeup she did on Brando incredible.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
I touched it up. It came full circle. We were
happy again.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
What have we learned about this? Just stay out of
logistics next year after yourself.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
That was the problem.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
I was staying too far out of the logious sics
with me. For her, I was in the beer fridge again.
Speaker 4 (01:31):
A Hi Journal, It's been almost a week since we
arrived home from our mind blowing, breath taking unforgettable work
trip to New York with Tony's Big Spender winner Terresa,
who shopped up a big storm with her daughter Grace.
I've already talked about the beautiful bond they share and
sing them laugh together after such a rough year for
both of them. They brought tears to my eyes. But
this week I find myself writing about something even more gorgeous,
being home. As we flew into New Zealand, I looked
(01:54):
out the windows and saw the sun starting to peek
up over the rolling waves and then light up our
lush green rolling hills. When I stepped off that seventeen
rural yes thanks, When I stepped off that seventeen hour
flight and soaked up the sounds of key we accents
everywhere and breathe in that fresh, cool spring ear, I
started sneezing. Ah, yes, the pollen, my ellergies, it was
all there, as if my eyes weren't watery already. I
(02:17):
saw my wife and our two boys, who got up
early and surprised me at the airport, and they brought
our dog with them. And the only thing more overwhelming
was when I caught affliction of myself in the mirror
after such a long flight and full of hay fever
and happy tears, real pretty. As we got to our
house and the gate slid open and the unpacking and
washing began. Over the weekend, I was lucky enough to
catch up with my sister and her husband and kids

who happened to be in town, as well as friends
and my wife's family too, And it all reminded me
the only thing I love more than my home's who
I share it with.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Oh that's so lovely, Jace. I'm glad your dog came
to the airport. My dog has peg said with me.
I think I've been away too long and he's giving
me the cold shoulder. Last night really made it go
and pick them up.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
Really, here's my shadow, He's only me lo on in
case I'll go somewhere again headed with me leaving.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
My cat died.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
At the time, and that was a long time ago,
and you still haven't told your children, so I hope
I told the kids. Dear Journal, Well, that was the
most rushed Halloween we've ever had. Our playing literally touchdown
at five pm last night, so it was a mad
dash to get the kids costumes on, get home, ditch
the suitcases and the washing, and a quick scramble to
find the costumes, and then to find where their friends
were to try and catch them up. What a fluster,
(03:29):
But I'm so glad that we made the effort. There
are lots of Kiwis that think Halloween is an overrated
Americanized tradition, but that's not what I saw last night.
I'll tell you what I saw. Neighbors smiling at each
other and actually interacting. I saw the excitable energy of
kids filling the streets. Cars were driving slower to be
mindful of the throngs of trick or treatise, shrieks of
(03:49):
delight as people saw each other and compared their costumes.
All I saw was joy, excitement, and happiness. And I
don't know what's not to love about that. I actually
think we need more days like Halloween that force people
out of the silos and to actually connect.

One Yeah, and just also walking around into people's properties
as good to just see how they live.
Speaker 4 (04:11):

The Burden
The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered.
