for week two with our expert guest, Riley Laster. She's
a dietitian and a big fan of intuitive eating. I

you missed it, because Riley shared some of her personal
story um with clean eating and disordered eating and just
being completely obsessed with it even as a dietitian. But
eventually she caught on, she learned about her She did
a one eight and she's living in different life now,
a more fulfilling life, a bigger life, a life that's

not so small because, as we know, eating disorders and
diets they can take up a big chunk of our brain.
And it's twofold. You're trying to make yourself smaller, but
then you're also making your brain space smaller, and he
is trying to make ourselves smaller at all, and you're
definitely not making yourself small on Instagram. I found you

(01:27):
through someone reposting something funny that you put up, and
I love your big presence on there. I love your personality,
I love your humor, your creativity. So what has that
journey been like for you? And have you seen you know,
when did your following start to pick up? And then
how do you come up with the ideas for the
videos that you're going to post? So it has been

(01:49):
quite the journey on Instagram. Um I started posting on
Instagram about five years ago, and it was so comfortable.
Um I had been little words that I would poss
and a cute little square with cute little colors, and
um I never showed my face. Um I might post
a story every now and then, but I usually wasn't
talking because my thought was, this accent is rough, Like

(02:14):
I cannot show the world this accent and they're not
gonna listen to me. So then Instagram kind of turned
into TikTok and all the reals started happening and they're like,
if you want to grow, you have to make reels
and I'm like, oh, I don't want to grow. I'm fine.
So I did start making a few and I started
talking more on stories because last year I thought I

(02:36):
really could do something with this. I don't know what.
I was on maternity leave and I thought, why don't
you put some effort into this and say what you
can do with it? Um, because I feel like I
do have a message that needs to be shared. I
just didn't want to be the one to share it. Eventually,
you know, worked at the Courage, started making a few
reels and um, surprisingly they weren't horrible. You know, they

(02:58):
were horriblood fires, but those are probably been deleted. But
I got better at it. And this past year okay,
so I had a baby last April. I had a
baby this past April. Um, it's been a whirlwind. I
don't think I said I didn't want kids for the
first twenty seven years of my life, so that's changed.
And well, this past maternity leave, I think I posted

(03:21):
just a random, real kind of making fun of those
posts about what I eat in a day because they're
always so unrealistic to me. And I started it out
with I'm an influencer and this is what I eat
in a day, and people loved it, and I was like,
oh my god, fay more sheared. I would click on
people's stories and say my face and immediately like closet

(03:41):
because oh my gosh, what what is my my toughest critic.
I will go back and watch something and be like,
I could have did better, could have did it like that?
You know, I'm just I'm so tough with myself. But
then sometimes I go back and I do genuinely laugh
at myself. So that was the first influencer to you
I made and it took off, and I just after that,

(04:04):
I was like, this is something that people we all
were like to because the comment section is like, oh
my gosh, and this and this and this and have
you seen this? And what about when people do this?
And I'm like, we're all having the same thoughts, We're
all the same person on the internet. I feel like,
let's talk about it, Okay, the one I in the
day influencers, we've talked about that, and I don't know

(04:27):
when the rest of the world is going to catch
on that nobody cares what you ate today, Like literally,
nobody cares. I don't mind sharing to share like a recipe,
I want, yes, I want to know how to make something.
I want a quick and easy tip. I want something yummy.
I want to know, okay for party, do this? I

(04:48):
want all those tips. Right. It literally doesn't matter to
me what you had for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and
every snack in between, because if you're intent and posting
that is, if you want to eat like me, Okay,
well what I don't why because our body is metabolized
everything very differently. My body reacts to now suddenly you

(05:09):
don't eat gluten, so then I don't eat gluten, but
actually not ha handle gluten. You know, I have to.
I will admit Riley because I know you and I
haven't known each other for a long time at all,
you know, just on the zoom here. But well, I
mean I feel like I knew you because I'm following you.
But I've had to apologize to my podcast listeners. And

(05:29):
I'm on a big morning show in country music show
where I used to say and encourage certain behaviors because
that's I thought that that was my role as someone
on air, Like oh, people want to know that I
literally only drink green juice for the first seven hours
of my day. And I do not leave the house

(05:52):
without having my hot lemon water first thing in the morning.
And I, you know, don't eat after six pm. And
I thought I was giving helpful information. So I've been there.
I've been that even though I wasn't an Instagram influencer,
I was influencing in a different way where I've had
to acknowledge that and unlearned things and grow and say sorry.

(06:14):
And I'm sure there's things that I even do now
that a year or two from now, and it has
to be like, oh shoot, I could have member differently.
We're all evolving and that's okay. So also the same
if you're listening right now and you do post those
certain things. Finally, and I are just here to tell
you that nobody cares. Isn't that nice? So kind of us?
Nobody cares and that's oh my god, that okay. So

(06:37):
I'm a clinical dietitian. Um. I work in a hospital.
It's not just influencers, it's dietitians, it's doctors, it's nurses.
When you were doing something and you feel better, even
if you've been doing it for five minutes, you want
to shout it from the rooftop. You want to tell
every patient, I drink green juice and I feel great,
And that's that's just who we are as humans. We

(06:59):
want to share good news and that's beautiful. But I
think we all have to be so careful because I've
done the same thing with the clean eating. I clean
and so can you, and we are all such different people.
Like you said, I can sit here and say stop
eating gluten, but if you don't have a reason to,
but that's not gonna help you. And it's just it's

(07:22):
a fine line when you're sharing something that works for
you and when you're you know, encouraging that behavior from others,
because that behavior I don't work for everybody else, right,
And then like, why would you think it's a responsible
idea to say, Okay, at eight am, I have coffee,
At nine pm, I have a piece of toast, At noon,

(07:44):
I have a hard boiled egg and some lettuce. And
at dinner time I had three ounces of fish and
some abruptli Thank you. Almost believe it's a way to
hold yourself accountable when you're in my culture and when
you're selling yourself on the internet. It's a white to say,
if you ate it like this, you could look like me.

(08:05):
And that's a sales pitch, and I do think that's
two different wise. I say it a lot of times.
A lot of people are not though, having this this
ill intent. I do think there are a lot of
people who share these videos who just want people to say,
you're so healthy, You're doing so great. They want that validation,
and we all do to some sense. But when you

(08:27):
start to chose that validation through outside appearance or through
the Internet especially, it's it's a you know, it's a
rabbit hole. I know. I feel like I just sounded
a little snarky a second ago, but I do come
from a place of compassion because there and you also
don't know what you what you don't know, and eventually
hopefully people know. What is your favorite I'm an Influencer

(08:50):
video to date? Do you have one or what's two questions?

And then what's been the most popular one? The most
popular one is the one where I do the food swaps,
so like one of the food swaps, I think I
was like, so, I'm an influencer and instead of eating
these twelve chips, I want to tell you which you
can ate today, and it's twelve paces of paper. People

(09:32):
love that one because it was just there are so
many posts like that, well if you would just swap
this for this, and it's always something crazy like oh,
I know that you like to eat a cupcake after dinner,
but here's some cucumbers. What. It's not the same thing,
and probably the favorite one I've done. I did one

(09:55):
that just cracked me up, and it's not the most
popular one, but looking back, oh my gosh, I cracked up.
It was um one where I talked about I'm an
influencer and I love cauliflower, and I just went through like,
here's um my calipods instead of my EarPods. I went
crazy caulifloxer No. I watched that one multiple times, and

(10:17):
I think I shared it with other people because cauliflower
and I love cauliflower. But it definitely where you were
subbing cauliflower for every single thing. It was, I mean, odd,
the obvious one cauliflower, right, but it was like, well,
blend up the cauliflower and bake it into you know,
it's a cauliflower, that caulflower. Yeah, we went crazy with it.

(10:41):
We really did. Um. But that's probably my favorite one.
It makes me laugh, So that's a good one. So
what does your husband think about your influencer fame? He
doesn't sell you a lot about it because i mean
he gets four seven He's just like, oh my god,
what is she out now? What is she talking about? Now?

(11:03):
He's just happy I'm having fun, I think, and he
really doesn't find much. I'm like, do you ever send
these videos to people? And he's like, no, not really,
but he does enjoy I think when he catches me
making them, because I'm so awkward, I will not do
it like I want the girls to sleep. I want
him like out of the house when I make these

(11:23):
videos because I'm so awkward and self conscious, and if
I hear him come in, I'm like, I'm an amplu.
Oh why so awkward? You need to post an outtakes video?
One day of compiling all the different times for you where,
oh why what do you do anything? Yeah? I need
to do that because I have so many good ones

(11:46):
and so how has it been Even I get that
you get comments from people that are resonating with what
you're saying. They're like, oh, my goodness, have you seen this?
But have you come across anybody that was maybe at
first offended by you making fun of them, but then
also maybe the light bulb went off for them, or
have there been any situations where there's been conversation of like,

(12:07):
are you making fun of me? Or none of that?
I will say, the biggest questions I get are are
you saying all supplements are bad? Like we shouldn't be
taking any supplements? And I I try, I do really
take the time in my d M S to say
I'm not saying that. I actually posted a story recently
where I kind of went through and just said supplements

(12:29):
are not bad. The way we take them are bad.
We try to get a one supplement fits all fixed
my mental physical well being, and I'm just gonna take
this and everything's gonna be better. And we don't fix
anything that we need to. We just want to take
a supplement that fixes it. And That's where I'm coming from.

(12:50):
So I think that's probably been the biggest question is
So if you're saying I don't need to take anything. No, no, no,
no no. I'm saying we need to have a targeted
reason all we're taking this supplement and know that it's
a good quality one and know that there's a reasoning
behind it, not just to fix all. So that's probably
the most the most questions I get. Yeah, there's not

(13:11):
It's not like a confrontation. It's just more of a clarification.
And that kills me because it's like, are you saying
what I'm known as bad? And it just cracks me
up because I'm like, I'm some random person on the internet.
Don't listen to me at all. Just laugh with me.
You do not have to take advice for me. So
that's kind of funny when people ask me that. Yeah,

(13:31):
and then knowing too that always seeking a professional opinion,
which it seems like they can interact with ems and
you are a professional, But who do you have in
your wheelhouse of people that you can go to if
you are going to consider taking something? And that's something
where I've had to you know, we were talking about
green juice. Green juice is not that at all. It's

(13:54):
when that's a substitute for food over time, and I
was a big clean a girl. I was. I was
always It's like because I was a bend restrict all
the things. Obviously, I just would spend many days angry
at the world because I couldn't consume food because and

(14:14):
I used to do all kinds of commercials on the
Bobby Bones Show, on my podcast for three even five
day cleanses, and then you know, I was under contracts
with some of these places and I'm entering and recovery
and I'm like, hey, look, I can still do the
spots because you know, I'm a big fan of your
company and I do love your deth that I am
no longer going to promot clans because no idea, who's

(14:37):
buying the clans, what's the reason for buying the clans?
Where are they and their mental health journey where they
and they're eating disorder. Some people that have certain relationships
with food, they could do a three day cleans if
they wanted to, for like whatever, well under advice from whomever,
just to like they may not have an issue with anything.
But I can't back check that with every listener that

(14:59):
I have play. And then again, the juice isn't the problem.
It was how I was talking about the juice. I
can now enjoy a green juice with a meal, or
before a meal, or just because I wanted, and then
later no, I'm going to have a meal. But it
was this whole. I just had a very unhealthy relationship
with the green juice because it was absolutely and that's

(15:22):
what I tell people is when I was buying a
lot of supplements, it was a time in my life
when I needed therapy. I needed um to work on
trusting myself with food, my relationship with food I need.
I had a toxic relationship with exercise. I had all
these issues, and I thought it was just like a supplement,

(15:42):
you know, And so I try to share my experience
so they're not thinking that I'm coming from a place of,
you know, talking down to them about taking supplements, because
I've been there and that was the place I was
in when I was really big into supplements, and it
was it was my tent, it was the way I
used them, So yeah, I would encourage people. A few
weeks ago, I had an episode go up here on

(16:02):
Our Way about being socially and financially responsible in recovery.
I think that the title maybe even was prioritizing socially
and financially in recovery. And sometimes what you really need
to be spending your money on is, like you said,
the therapy or the help of a team, a dietitian

(16:25):
that's anti diet, your therapist, whatever, investing in that instead
of investing your money and all these other different products
that you think it's fixed or to help you. And
so then you're not really prioritizing your recovery because you
use it as an excuse sometimes of lookal, I don't
really have the funds. But if you were to look
at your budget excellently you're spending stuff, then you can
prioritize your recovery. I agree. I worked at a nursing

(16:49):
home as a cook. Whenever I was doing planating, I
made six twenty five an hour, and every bit of
that that I did spend on gas went to some
sort of weird food that I had to buy on
the internet to keep my clean eating up. And thinking
about how hard I worked for that money and what
I spend it on, it makes me sick to this

(17:11):
day because I had so many other things I needed
and I just let all that slide because I wanted that,
you know, specialty food and I thought it was gonna
be the fix, and it just you know, ended up
making me worse than when I started out. So yeah,
I totally agree with that. Well, thank you Riley for sharing.
