A listener asks about Amy’s morning and night self-care routines, and then we get to listen to the chorus of a song about Outweigh, that Brittney Spencer is writing! A listener asks about how Amy broke the news to her family about how she can’t get pregnant biologically, and Amy shares info that a listener sent over about breast implant illness.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yo, yo yo, Happy Tuesday, everybody. I cannot believe we're
getting close to mid December. It's gonna be Christmas before
you know it. Here we are busting out another episode
of the podcast. This is the fifth Thing. I can't
believe we near the end of the year. It's still
blowing my mind that it's December. I think we have

(00:22):
what like a couple more weeks worth of podcasts and
then it's gonna whoop whoop. And I know we're all
hoping next year is better than this year. But I
just want to welcome each and every one of you
here to the Fifth Thing, the bonus episode of the
Four Things podcast, where I share your emails, answer questions,
or maybe just read something inspiring or encouraging that you

(00:42):
sent into me. So four Things with Amy Brown at
gmail dot com is the email in case you want
to send me a note. I would love to hear
from you. We always start our Tuesday episodes off with
a quote, and today's comes from Sclaurie and the quote
is breathe, Darling. This is just a chat after It's
not your whole story, and I just want y'all to

(01:04):
remember this one because I think sometimes we can get
wrapped up in what's going on in our life, and
we almost feel defined by it in the moment. Especially
this year, there's been a lot of challenges, but there
were challenges way before and there's going to be challenges
away after. But it's not the whole story. So I

(01:24):
just encourage you to breathe through it, be patient, and
know that it's your choice how you want to come
out on the other side. It's your choice if you
want to grow or end up stuck where you are
and whatever it is that you're going through. And I
say this out loud right now, and I'm saying it
to myself at the same time that I'm saying it
to you. I'm not on a soapbox preaching it to

(01:46):
you by any means. I have done a lot of
growing in the last couple of months. I've showed I
did some growing this last weekend, So I wouldn't say
i've I've always been open to it. There's times where
I don't. I don't even think that I really knew
I needed to grow in a certain area. But once
your eyes are open to different areas, you're like, oh, okay,

(02:07):
I get that now, and I want to put in
the work to be better. But that's just an example
of how you can grow, maybe if you know that
you need to. But sometimes, let's say you're going through
a really, really hard situation and it is just a
rocky time and you don't even know how you're going
to see the light of day. I just want you
to remember to breathe. Breathing is so important. I was

(02:31):
watching a YouTube video the other day about stress and
they were talking about the cortisol levels rising when you're
stressed out, which if you know anything about stress, you
know that that is given. But we need to make
sure that we watch our cortisol levels. It's not good
for us to have our quartos all high all the time.
And they did a study where they had people breathe

(02:52):
five times a day intentionally, and I mean, you're breathing
all day long, but this is an intentional set time
where you just stop what you're doing and take deep
breaths intentionally, do it five rounds, five times a day,
and they saw cortisol levels drop and no medicine, nothing else,
they weren't doing anything differently, but that was helping. So

(03:15):
I just want to encourage you to breathe and I'll
say the quote again, Breathe, Darling. This is just a chapter.
It's not your whole story, sc Lorie. I love that
I had not ever heard that quote until I pulled
it up to share with you all today. I saw
someone post it and I thought, oh, this is so
great because I need to remember to breathe, and I

(03:35):
just want to make sure that y'all are doing the
same when i'm I've had some therapy sessions lately where
the therapist will kind of stop in the middle of
the session and say, Hey, I just want you to
check in with yourself real quick, put your hand on
your heart, and just breathe. And she always seems to
say it at the exact right time that I need it,

(03:55):
and I'm sure she she's trained to look at body
language and know if people have kind of stopped breathing
because of what they're talking about or what they're trying
to process. So this is me passing that along to
you and not in a way of like, hey, I
know everything and I need that reminder for myself, which
also makes me think about the bracelets that I'm wearing today.

(04:16):
I actually have one that says breathe. That's a little
metal bracelet that Bobby's fiance, Caitlin, gave me that says breathe.
So I'm thankful now I have that reminder. And then
my sister also gave me a similar little metal bracelet
that says expect miracles, and I have those jingling around
on my wrist right now. But if you can find

(04:37):
jewelry or shoot, I have some tattoos that remind me
things too. Whatever you can do, put post it notes
on your bathroom mirror, Get a dryer, ra s marker
and write notes on your mirror. Hide post it's in
journals or books that you might open up so that
you have little reminders. Put post it's in your car.
I don't know wherever you can put little reminders that

(04:59):
you might need, because maybe you do need a reminder
to breathe. That's just an example. It might be something
else you need to be reminded about. Or maybe you
put this whole quote breathe, darling. This is just a chapter.
It's not your whole story. I don't want you to
ever feel stuck in something that any given moment is defining.
You can always learn and grow and know that you're

(05:19):
going through something for a bigger picture. You have a
big story and there's lots of little things that are
going to happen inside of it, and it's up to
you how you want to use it, and it's up
to me how how I want to use anything that
I have going on as well. But the last thing,
I don't know why I feel like I need to
say this. I just want to make sure my podcast
is a safe place where we're all just talking about

(05:41):
things together and anything I share with you or I
put out on the table is not me acting like
I know exactly what I'm talking about and that I'm
saying you need to do this, and this is how
it has to be for you to, you know, be
in a good place because I'm just like you. I'm learning,
doing all the things, and I'm just sharing with you
little things that come along for me that have helped

(06:01):
me and that I think might be a benefit to
you as well. So I'm gonna go ahead and get
into the emails that were shared, and the first one
is from Amy. Hey, Amy, I'm catching up on last
Tuesday's fifth Thing and heard you share the recipe for
your mom's Christmas Smell Good. My grandma used to do
this as well, and we always added apples. It smells amazing,

(06:22):
so I just thought i'd share, which Amy, thank you
for the tip of adding apples. I really if y'all
missed that recipe I gave out to make your house
smell like Christmas, go listen to Last Tuesday's fifth Thing
and it's on There's something my mom used to do,
and my sister and I do and it just is
so yummy, and my house is starting to feel like Christmas.

(06:43):
We have our Christmas tree up. I put up a
picture on Instagram. It's at Radio Amy if you want
to see it. It's got so many white lights and
it's flocked and it just makes me so happy. And
we have our stockings up in some garland and we
made a fire this last weekend and watched a Christmas
movie and it just was all the fields. Which I
gotta tell you all about these slippers. I got it Target.

(07:03):
They are basically like eggs, but they were half the price.
So if you just go to their website and look
up slippers, you'll see which ones I'm talking about, Like
a brown leather and then they have like the furry
white stuff on the inside. And I don't have the
brand with the pair I got. I think they were
thirty five dollars, but I know there was another brand
they had that was like twenty dollars, and I'm sure

(07:24):
they're all just the same. So I don't think you
should splurge on the eggs if you don't have to,
because Target always comes in for the win. The next
email is from Elizabeth Hey Amy, longtime listener of the
Bobby Bones Show. In your podcast, I was wondering if
you could share your morning and nighttime self care routines.
I remember you mentioning drinking hot lemon water in the
mornings and using eye patches, so I would love to

(07:46):
hear more. Thanks and Merry Christmas. Okay, Elizabeth, Yes, I'm
a big fan of eye patches. You can find them
that Speaking of target, at Target or on Amazon. I
have some link to my Amazon favorites. If you go
to Radio Amy dot com you can find the link
to my Amazon favorites page. But really you can find
them anywhere. And I wouldn't buy super expensive ones. I

(08:07):
used to, but then I realized some of the cheaper
ones feel just the same to me, and I love
keeping them in the refrigerator and then putting them under
my eyes in the morning. It's just a cooling sensation
and it's really one of my morning treats that I love. Also, yes,
I used to be obsessed with drinking hot lemon water
every single morning, but that was part of my disordered
eating days. So I have let that go. I still

(08:29):
enjoy it, and I do drink it from time to time,
but I am not strictly tied to it anymore, and
maybe one day I'll be able to incorporate it back
in as a daily thing. As long as I know
I'm coming from a healthy place with it. For me,
I'm like, okay, yeah, I know. I was getting a
little too obsessed with that. Like I would not let
myself do anything or put anything else in my body

(08:50):
besides water. If I had not had my hot lemon
water yet, I would travel with lemons, which I'm not
saying any of that is a bad thing. I think
it's lemon juice, slimon water, lemons. They're great for you.
There is value to having lemons in your life. But
I definitely was a little too obsessed with it. So
I had to strip myself of a lot of my

(09:13):
old habits and then I have to put them back
in as I see fit so hot. Lemon water is
a great thing, but I would just drink it when
you want to. Now, something that is back in my
morning routine is coffee. I had eliminated that back in
my disordered eating days as well, which you know makes
me think about an Oreo post that I put up

(09:34):
on Instagram this last weekend. I'm in a detour from
answering the question here to encourage you to go check
out that post if you struggle with food or having
something like Oreos in your house because you don't think
you can trust yourself. So if you need some encouragement there,
I want you to know that there is hope and
you can get to that point one day. My Instagram

(09:54):
is at radio Amy. Just look for the picture of
the Oreos and you can read it there. Okay, back
to the email. I still take a probiotic every morning
and my hair pills, which my hair pills are neutral Fault.
It's the brand that I take. You maybe have heard
commercials on the podcast here before, but I've been taking
it about six months now and I really like it.
I just want to keep my hair strong and trying
to grow it out a little bit, so that's why

(10:16):
it's part of my morning routine. I also make my
bed every morning. Now, if you don't do that, I
want to encourage you to give it a try. I
used to not make my bed at all, but I
promise you it has made a difference in my day.
I know that sounds weird, especially if you're not a
bed maker. You might be like, what's the point, because
I used to think my sister was weird because she
was like, I can't start my day until my bed

(10:37):
is made. But it's true, at least for me. I
started making my bed around the time that I stopped snoozing.
And that's another thing that I recommend I guess as
part of a morning routine. But no judgment here if
you still choose to snooze. I can only speak from
experience that I feel better as a non snoozer. Now.
Something that I do morning or night is practice as gratitude,

(11:00):
and I don't do it every single day, but I
try to more times than not, though I'm doing it
at night, but occasionally I do it in the morning. Earlier,
I mentioned breathing as a way to lower cortisol, but
practicing gratitude can do the same, which is one of
the many reasons that Mary and I made a very
simple four things gratitude journal that was not overwhelming, because yes,

(11:23):
practicing gratitude lowers your cortisol and your stress, but for us,
the thought of journaling was overwhelming and then which stress
us out again, so we wouldn't do it. That's why
we have a simple for things gratitude journal. And if
you can't afford the journal, no worries. Just join us
in writing down four things that you're thankful for. Um

(11:43):
let me think. Also, come night time, I am religious
about washing my face and doing my routine that Carrie
gave me. I get so many questions about that routine
and all my Zoe products. So I just want to
send you to her instagram right now. You can d
m her or check out what she has in her
highlight reels. Her instagram is the Nashville Beauty Girl. I

(12:05):
used to go to bed with my makeup on I
don't know, a couple of times a week when I
was tired, but I haven't done that in a very
long time. I'm just in such a routine now where
I laid down the other night, so tired, and I thought,
you know what, I just want to go to bed.
I don't even want to wash my face, but I couldn't.
There's no way I was going to be able to
fall asleep. So I popped right up, I went and
I washed my face. I got it done, and it

(12:26):
just feels so much better to do that. Something else
I'm trying to work into my day. I don't know
if it'll be morning, and I don't know the middle
of the day wherever I can squeeze it is. I
don't know. A couple of months ago, I was trying
to start a Bible study with some girlfriends in life
just got crazy and we weren't able to do it.
But I am trying to work that in somewhere. And
while I don't think that I'm on a schedule right

(12:48):
now where I can actually meet with the girls, I
still want to go through it myself. So if you
have time where you can carve out, what if you've
got a book you're reading, or in my case, you
want to do a Bible study, or you want to
listen to a certain podcast and go for a walk,
like you might have to put that into your schedule
and carve out the time, whether it's morning, night, or
middle of the day. But that's just something where I'm

(13:10):
trying to figure out where to put it, and every
day it might look a little bit different. Just my
mornings are so weird depending on what I have going
on with work or the kids, because obviously I work
a lot earlier than most people. But it's just got
me thinking as I'm sitting here talking about routines and like, oh,
I've got to make sure I have that scheduled into
my day. Next email is from Harris Dear Amy, I

(13:44):
would like you to know that I repeatedly listened to
the Outweigh chorus. It is beautiful. I also really enjoyed
the jingle on the Gift Guide episode. I just want
to tell you how much I enjoyed the songs, which
shout out to Britney Spencer, who is on both of
the songs and as a writer out our Gift Guide jingle.
That was just something fun to do for the Gift
Gied episode. But the Outweigh song is actually pretty serious

(14:06):
and I think could be an awesome song for people
to have as their body love anthem. I mean, I
personally think it's so good and we only have the hook,
but the hook is just so good. I got so
many messages about it, so I'm gonna play it again
right now for anyone that might need a reminder that
their body doesn't outweigh all that they are made of.
So here's Britney Spencer singing the hook of a song

(14:28):
that we are working on called Outweigh. I won't let
my body out outweigh everything that I'm made, won't spend
my life trying to change. I'm learning to love who
I am. I get I'm strong, I feel free, I
know who every part of me. It's beautiful and that

(14:50):
will always outway if you feel it. She's love to
the boot that Let's say good and did you and die? Oh?
That song is so good. I mentioned, you know the
Oreo post a minute ago, and that was really something

(15:11):
for you to go see to know that you're not alone.
But if you think you have disordered eating habits, I
encourage you to listen to the Outweigh podcast that I
co host with my friend Lisa. All you have to
do is search for Outweigh wherever you listen to podcasts.
I mean, if you're listening to this one right now,
then I assume you have a place, but it should
pop up if you just type in outweigh. And if
you have a severe eating disorder, I encourage you to

(15:33):
definitely seek help from a professional, but listening to the
podcast may also be helpful. Just don't let that be
a substitute if you need something more. Next email is
from anonymous, and I'm gonna keep it anonymous given the topic,
but she said, Hey, Amy, I love the podcast. It
looks like my husband and I aren't able to have
kids biologically. I was wondering how you broke the news

(15:55):
to your in laws. I'm worried how they will take
the news. Okay, uh, I can really only speak from
my experience, and we didn't really have an official sit
down talk with our family about it. It was more
of an ongoing conversation that went from you know, we're
trying to get pregnant. Yea too. We haven't been able
to get pregnant, so I guess we're going to meet
with fertility doctors too, you know, after a lot of

(16:18):
tests being done, realizing that there wasn't really a reason
that was keeping us from getting pregnant, then to us
learning more about adoption and considering that as a way
to become parents, and our families were super supportive the
entire time and they continue to be. Our family welcomed
our adopted kids and treated them just like they did

(16:40):
any other member of our family, any biological member. So
I could see how if you have a certain type
of parents or in laws, that there might be some
sadness there. But if the sadness is for themselves, I guess,
and not for what you're experiencing, because it's your body's,
you and your husband's I mean, that seems pretty selfish

(17:01):
to me, and that's just just my opinion. So I
hope that is not the case for you when you
decided to have that conversation with your in laws. But
I think you just have a talk with them about
where you are in your journey, And yeah, I hope
you're met with compassion and not disappointment, because I can't
even imagine what that might feel like for some people.
Next and final email is also from anonymous per request.

(17:22):
This person emailed in about breast implant illness and she
said that she got breast implants five years ago and
had persistent pain and numbness. She said the unexplained symptoms
got so much deeper. So she wanted to make sure
that people my listeners knew about a Facebook group that
she started following. That's awesome and the pages Breast implant
Illness and Healing by Nicole, So definitely go check that out.

(17:45):
She just wants more people to be talking about this,
so I thought, well, you know what, there might be
somebody that needs to hear that, So I'm going to
share that email. And you know, I talked about this
topic twice last year, one episode back in March of
two thousand nineteen, and then again in September two thousand nineteen.
I had had Bethany on and she was talking about
her breast implant illness and how she got them removed.

(18:06):
So you can check out both of those episodes. And
thank you to the person that emailed in anonymously to
share that Facebook group in case others need some support. Okay,
well that's a wrap on today's episode. I think my
sister is going to be joining me for the Four
Things episode this coming Thursday because she's in town, so
I'm pretty sure I can wrangle her to record with me.

(18:26):
I always get positive feedback when she is on. You know,
she most recently joined me on the Gift Guide episode,
and I can't recommend her coffee enough. If you have
a coffee lover in your life that you need a
shop for. Root house code dot com is the website
for her coffee shop, and her packaging is so cute
and she can ship right to the person that you're
giving the gift to. And then also if y'all are

(18:47):
Christmas shopping from ESPOA like you want to gift our
four Things or Attitude Journal or a four Things towed
or a star necklace or cool aunt or whatever else,
I encourage you to shop as soon as possible, and
you can get links to that at radio amy dot
com or shop splad dot com. But we're getting down
to the wire here, so if you've got shopping to do,

(19:08):
don't put it off any longer, alright. I hope you'll
have a great day or a great rest of your week,
or whenever it is that you're listening to this. I
just appreciate you. Thanks Spy,
