Speaker 1 (00:04):
Happy Tuesday, everybody. Hope y'all are having a great morning, afternoon, evening,
whenever it is that you're listening to the Fifth Thing,
the bonus episode for the four Things podcast where I
share emails that you have sent in, and we always
start this episode off with a quote, and this one
comes to us from zig Ziggler. I think I shared
a zig Ziglar quote a couple of weeks ago, but

(00:25):
here we are again with another good one. Stop being
afraid of what could go wrong and start being positive
about what could go right. That's a good one. Maybe
you needed to hear that right now because you've got
something going on with that, or maybe this is a
quote that you need to keep in mind for later
when you do need it. So I'll say it again,
Stop being afraid of what could go wrong, and start

(00:46):
being positive about what could go right. So four Things
with Amy Brown at gmail dot com is the email.
And I appreciate all the notes that are sent in.
And I gotta say I got the sweetest email from
a listener named Mary, and I think she emailed me
mostly to tell me that she might be my oldest
listener at sixty three years old. And the different ways

(01:07):
that the podcast has been relatable to her since the
very first episode. But the last line of her email
is one that was super special made my day when
I read it. And Mary ended her email with, Oh,
one more thing. I know how much you miss your mom,
but you have lots of moms. I'm sure who listened
to you, care about you, hurt when you hurt, and

(01:28):
celebrate with you even if we are far away. And
that was just really cool of Mary to share that.
And it is the firms that we have a little
four Things podcast family here, which means a lot. We
like to be there for each other and hurt with
each other, and celebrate with each other, and teach each
other things and share inspiring stories with each other. And

(01:52):
so that's what this podcast is for, and what it's
all about is that, you know, if we're going through something,
we give a place to share it. You know, I
share your emails, I share what I'm going through. I
bring on guests that share their stories, and hopefully we
walk away at different times knowing that we are not
alone and whatever it is that we're going through. And
you know, speaking of teaching each other things, I've got

(02:16):
an example of that right here in this next email
that I got from Emily. Emily said, have you heard
of Poodle Science? I just listened to your Outweigh series
on disordered eating, so I'm sure you've heard of it,
but if not, check it out on YouTube. It could
be something cool to share with your listeners when it
comes to the topic of weight and health. And Emily, yes,

(02:37):
I have heard of it, but honestly, it's been so
long since I watched the video that I had totally
forgotten about it, So thank you for reminding me of it,
and it is definitely something worth sharing. So I pulled
the audio from the YouTube video and I'm gonna play
it here in just a second. And if you want
to see the illustrations that go along with this audio,
when you have time, go watch the video. It was

(02:59):
put on YouTube you buy the Association for Size Diversity
and Health and it's an animated video that exposes the
limitation of current research on weight and health, which is
definitely something we went over in Outweigh, especially in the
fourth episode of the series with Dr Joshua when he
was on. So here's the audio that I pulled for

(03:21):
you to listen to now, and I hope you understand
the analogy and how important it is what they're saying here.
There's a big problem at the center of our research
on weight and health. What's the problem, Well, picture of
society made up of dogs. Let's say poodles of the
bossiest group. They're the ones you see down at the
doggy park barking at all the other dogs about how

(03:43):
to live their lives in order to be healthy. But
the problem is poodles things that every other kind of
dog is just a really big, a really small, or
really fat poodle, when actually the other dogs aren't even
poodles at all. The terriers are massiffs, for greyhounds or labs,
and all of the thousands of different dog breeds have

(04:03):
different lifespans and different health risks. Each one is evolved
to use food differently for different specialties at surviving, some
for staying warm, some for running fast, and some for
being strong. They're meant to be different sizes and weights,
so the poodles sink the mastiffs should lose weight, but
as starving mastiff never becomes a poodle. The poodles don't

(04:24):
understand that dogs come in many more sizes than they
can imagine in their poodle centric ways. So this becomes
a problem when it comes to poodle science. When the
poodles did their weight in health research and made their
claims that lighter dogs are healthier live longer, they weren't
comparing thinner poodles and batter poodles. They were comparing poodles
and mastiffs. So the recommendation for mastiffs to lose weight

(04:47):
is based on the false assumption that if all dogs
reach poodle weight, then all dogs will have poodle health.
But once again, a starved mastiff just isn't a poodle.
This poodle science doesn't even test whether a star mastiff
lives longer than a mastiff who has enough to eat,
because one would have to compare mastiffs who maintain poodle
weight to mastiffs that maintain mastiff weight, And it turns

(05:09):
out that starving mastiffs regain weight, which after all, is
a much better thing than starving, but the poodles can
only see that regain as a failure of massive self discipline. Looks,
poodles are great, but poodle centric health policy is a nightmare.
Good science tells us that it's better to recognize and
respect the ways we're different because how we're treated. Having

(05:32):
good friends, having access to decent food, a place to play,
RESTful sleep, and medical care make a huge difference in
our health and longevity for all of us, whatever our size. Okay,
that is poodle science again. You can watch the video
on YouTube. All you're gonna do is goo to YouTube
and type and poodle science and it will come up. Okay,

(05:53):
next email is from Robin. Hey, Amy, not sure if
you remember me, but I asked a few months ago
about suggested protein bars because my husband was going to
have kidney transplants soon. Well, yesterday was that day. One
of the guys that he was in the military with
volunteered to get tested and was a match. He had
the transplant yesterday and both guys are doing well. Robin, Yes,

(06:15):
I remember you, and I love that you took the
time to email us and give us an update. Such
awesome news. He's doing well. I love that you know
someone that he knew in the military decided to get
tested and was a match. I mean, sometimes people you
know go get tested, it doesn't mean that their match.
And then you have to have somebody that you know
that's also willing to give you a kidney, even if
they are a match. I mean, that's a huge deal.

(06:36):
So that's a little tell Me something Good you know,
we do tell Me Something Good segments on the Bobby
Bones Show every single day, and I feel like we
just worked one into the podcast because of Robin's email.
So thank you so much. I love hearing updates from
you all like that. Next email is from Natalie Hey, Amy,
just curious if you ever got the cookie cake recipe
from Leanne Ellington that she talked about on your October

(06:59):
first podcast. Asked if so, would you be willing to
share it? Okay, Natalie. I emailed Leanne, hoping to hear
back from her by the time I recorded this episode,
and I have not heard back yet, but if she replies,
I will give it to you. In the meantime, I'm
not going to leave you with just no cookie recipe
to check out because I recently tried out Kale Junkie's

(07:21):
Salted Caramel cookie skillet and it is amazing, So I
highly recommend y'all. If you've got a cookie craving and
you want to bake something up that's so good, you've
got to check that out. Just google Kale Junkie Salted
Caramel Cookie Skillet or I'll put the link in the
show notes as well, so that way you can click
on it from there. But again, it's just a quick

(07:42):
Google search and you're not going to regret making it.
But I definitely will keep you posted on Lean's cookie
cake recipe because yeah, she said it's to die for.
I just don't know if it's a secret or if
she shares it with people. Okay, next email I got

(08:05):
is from Layla, and she sent in a story to
share that I wanted to pass along to all of
you because I think that it's important to keep this
story of mine when life is just a lot to
handle it just too much. There's a lot going on
and you need to prioritize things. It's a story about
the managed jar and the two beers. Some of you
may have heard of it. I have, but it's been

(08:26):
a while, so I thought, well, this will be a
good thing to revisit for now, not only for myself,
but for you to hear as well and maybe even
share with some of your kids, or some of your
friends and family or whatever. So here's the story. A
professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items
in front of him. When the class began. He wordlessly
picked up a very large and empty managed jar and

(08:48):
proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked
the students if the jar was full. They agreed that
it was. The professor then picked up a box of
pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the
jar lightly, the bubles rolled into the open areas between
the golf balls. He then asked the students again if
the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor

(09:08):
next picked up a box of sand and poured it
into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He asked once more if the jar was full. The
students responded with a unanimous yes. The professor then produced
two beers from under the table and poured the entire
contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between
the sand. The students laughed. Now, said the professor, as

(09:31):
the laughter subsided, I want you to recognize that this
jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important
things your family, your children, your health, your friends, and
your favorite passions. And if everything else was lost and
only they remained, your life would still be full. The
pebbles are the other things that matter. Like your job,

(09:52):
your house, and your car. The sand is everything else,
the small stuff. If you put the sand into the
jar first, he continued, there is no room for the
pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life.
If you spend all of your time and energy on
the small stuff, you will never have room for the
things that are important to you. Pay attention to the

(10:12):
things that are critical to your happiness. Spend time with
your children, spend time with your parents, visit with grandparents,
take your spouse out to dinner. There will always be
time to clean the house, fix the disposal, or deal
with things from your job. Take care of the golf
balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities.
The rest is just sand. One of the students raised

(10:35):
your hand and inquired what the beer represented. The professor
smiled and said, I'm glad you asked. The beer just
shows you that, no matter how full your life may seem,
there's always room for a couple of beers with a friend.
So there it is. Thank you, Layla for sharing that
story with us, the managed jar and the two beers.
And obviously if you don't drink, then I would say

(10:56):
insert coffee into that there's always room for a couple
of coffees with a friend. Okay, well, those are the
emails that I'm going to touch on this episode. Again,
I appreciate you emailing me. Oh and so many of
you have been sending in emails for the Steve Mochler
song giveaway, which is really really cool, and Steve and
I will be going through them and we'll select someone

(11:17):
this Thursday. So I'll announce it in the intro of
that episode who got selected, and then Steve will write
the song and then we'll actually with the person's permission
is long, they're cool with it, like play the song
is one of the things on an upcoming episode and
have Steve back on. And also this Thursday, Matthew West
will be my guest. He's gonna be on for all

(11:37):
four things. And he came over to my house last
week to record it and we had the best time.
So super pumped for you to hear all of that
with him. It's for sure, for sure an episode that
you will walk away after listening feeling inspired. Matthew West
is awesome. He's just the coolest. I played his song
Truth Be Told on the podcast a couple of weeks
ago after one of you actually emailed me in to

(11:58):
tell me that his song Truth Be Told was very
fitting for our four Things I'm Fine pullovers, which it
totally is, and heads up, we did add I'm Fine
tease to the line because people love a good gray
tea asking you shall receive. So now there's a black
pullover option and a T shirt option, and then one
more thing before I go, I want to remind you

(12:19):
that the customized four Things Christmas pullovers released this Friday,
October six. They are red and they have a little
Christmas tree on the sleeve next to a spoa, which
a spua means hope in Haitian creole, and they're supporting
my life speaks in Haiti. But you can put whatever
four things you want on them. We made a Christmas
cheat sheet which is just a helpful list of Christmas

(12:39):
e things, but you don't have to use words from
that list. You can literally put whatever four things that
you want, just thirteen characters or less. And then I
don't have confirmation as I'm recording this right now, so
look out online for confirmation that we might be putting
up a blue one that just has a plane spua
sleave for Hanuka folks, So just heads up that we

(13:01):
will have a blue four Things pull over as well,
but Mary was trying to confirm that with our distributor
and our printer to make sure that we could happen.
But it is something we've again asked and you shall received.
We were getting feedback from people so who wanted to
make sure that we had that available if we could,
So make sure you're following at Shop with Spua or
at the Shop Forward and then my Instagram is at

(13:22):
radio Amy. We will definitely update you there on what
we're going to have available, and then radio amy dot
com it's always to access links to anything a spaw
and four Things, my Amazon favorites list and the Bobby
Bones Show. And also if you haven't subscribed to the
podcast or rated and reviewed, it would be totally awesome
if you could take time to do that as well.
So I hope you all are doing great and again

(13:43):
we'll see you on Thursday with Matthew West. Can't wait

We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today. "Are you a Charlotte?" is much more than just rewatching this beloved show, it brings the past and the present together as we talk with heart, humor and of course some optimism.
