Speaker 1 (00:04):
Happy Tuesday. Welcome to the Fifth Thing. This is the
bonus episode to the Four Things podcast where I go
over emails that you have sent in and the quote
I'm going to share with you today is about expressing appreciation.
So I just want to start off by saying how
much I appreciate you emailing the podcast. Like it's not
lost on me that that's that's a big deal, and
(00:25):
we've always known it was a big deal on The
Bobby Bones Show for people to email in or pick
up the phone and call in to be on the show.
So I feel the same way about the podcast. I
want to get some sort of a phone line voicemail
situation going for the podcast. I'll keep you all posted
in what that will look like. But that way I
can actually hear from y'all instead of just reading your emails.
(00:49):
I think that would be fun. We've been doing voicemails
on The Bobby Bones Show for a few months now,
and it's been really neat to connect with people that way,
so much so that on mornings where I haven't had
coffee or maybe I'm just a little out of it,
the person on the voicemail will say morning studio, and
if you listen to the Bobby Bones Show. Then you
know when someone says that, we all reply morning, but
you have to say it exactly like that Morning Studio.
(01:10):
Sometimes people call in and they're like, hey, good morning,
everybody in the room, and we're like nope, or good
morning show and we're like nope, nope, it's Morning Studio.
So anyway, my point of this story is sometimes I
sound ridiculous because Bobby's playing a voicemail, but I think
it's a legit, real caller that's live and they say
morning studio and I reply back morning, and then that's
(01:30):
when Bobby looks at me like, oh, are you doing
okay today? And I'm like, I don't know, Sorry about that,
but I do want to set up a voicemail line
for the podcast. My whole point in sharing that story
and then also to yes, let y'all know how much
I appreciate each and every email that comes in. If
I haven't replied to you, it doesn't mean I don't
appreciate it. I try to get to every email. It's
(01:50):
not always possible to reply back to every single person.
I wish I had the bandwidth to do that, but
I currently don't. But I don't want you to think
for a second that I don't appreciate the email. So
here's the quote that I pulled from our new Four
Things gratitude journal. It is from Ralph Maston. Make it
a habit to tell people thank you, to express your
(02:12):
appreciation sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return.
Truly appreciate those around you, and you'll soon find many
others around you. Truly appreciate life, and you'll find that
you have more of it. So I just was flipping
through my Gratitude journal the other night and thought that
quote was encouraging in something you could keep in mind
(02:33):
this week as you interact with people. If there's a
way you can express some appreciation, then try to do it.
This first email I'm gonna get into is from becc up.
Hey friend, I've been following you for quite some time now.
I listen to the Four Things podcast, Outweigh podcast, and
The Truthiest Life every single week. I've struggled my entire
life with body image. I remember doing weight Watchers with
(02:54):
my mom around the age of ten. I've gone through
so many diet cycles where i say I'm going to
quote be good and then I fall off the wagon.
I totally give up for a while, and then the
vicious cycle continues at a later date. I don't think
I've ever suffered from an eating disorder per se, but
body image has been an issue. What tips do you
have for someone who wants to become healthier but not
(03:14):
buy into the diet culture? Where do I start? First
of all, I would say start with your thoughts around food,
like the good bad thoughts. It really helps a lot
when you stop having conversations with yourself about being quote
good or eating quote only good foods versus bad foods.
That was certainly a huge change for me, and it
wasn't an overnight thing. In fact, I still catch myself
(03:36):
doing it sometimes and I just have to reset and
say it again in my head or out loud, because
sometimes I say it out loud to someone else in
the room and like WHOA, Let me back up and
redo that with my new way of thinking, because it
really is a new way, and it's counter to anything
that society has taught us to be, like, especially for
you in particular, if you went to weight Watchers at
ten years old. When it comes to food in our bodies,
(03:58):
we are just brainway to think a certain way. So
another good place to start is to evaluate what other
types of rules do you have, like when can you eat?
Or how much can you eat? Do you have any
time rules? Now? I used to, and now I purposefully
will eat something past seven pm. Just approve to myself
that it's okay and the clock is not going to
(04:20):
dictate when I eat. Now, I won't always have to
do this, but it's definitely something that's working for me
right now to rewire my brain, and I'm gonna keep
doing it until I don't need to prove that to
myself anymore. I feel like, yeah, when it comes to
rewiring that there's just a lot that needs to happen,
and you just have to stay the course and be
consistent and not ever look at it as falling off
(04:42):
the wagon. Or once you eliminate that mentality, then you
you won't ever mess up. You can just have grace
with yourself and start to change that conversation in your head. Now,
if you're already listening to Outweigh, I think that that
will totally help you get the encouragement that you need
and give you tips on how to navigate this new
anti diet culture that you're not used to. And if
(05:04):
you're on Instagram, I definitely recommend following anti diet accounts
like Lisa, my outweigh co host. She's an awesome account
and hers is at Lisa Hame, which is h A
Y I am. And then I love following Jennifer Roland,
who's at Jennifer Underscore R O L L I N.
She's another great one. Which speaking of Jennifer, I pulled
(05:27):
an awesome post that she put up that I think
will be an encouragement to a lot of you listening
right now, because when I saw this I double tapped
it and commented yes right away. So here's what she
put up. Eating breakfast when an eating disorder voice is
yelling at you is brave. Skipping a workout when that
voice in your head is telling you not to is
true strength. Reaching out to seek help when your mind
(05:49):
tells you that you're not sick enough is courageous. Here's
to you and the battles you fight daily that no
one sees. So those are the types of posts that
go up on these accounts that I'm following that are
a great reminder to me to not listen to that
voice in my head. That I can't eat after seven pm,
or to put whatever food on my plate that I
want to and to not label something as good or
(06:11):
as bad, and to skip the workout if I don't
want to do it. I mean, truly, I used to
work out every single day, and I actually feel better
than ever before now that I have let go my
obsession with making sure that I get in my workout.
There's this whole mind body spirit connection. We go over
that in therapy a lot right now, and I'm in
(06:33):
a lot of therapy these days, and my therapist brings
up the mind body connection all the time. This Thursday's
episode for four Things, I'm going to actually do some
more on this type of stuff because I feel like
as we enter holiday season, there can be the pressures
around family, depending on your dynamic, and there might be
stress around food, and I just want to share with
(06:55):
you some things this coming Thursday that might help you
through it. I thought my sister would be on the
episode with me, but when she was in town, honestly,
we just did not want to take time to record.
We just wanted to be together. And I know that
she's always an awesome guest and you guys love her.
But we just didn't ever take the time to sit
down and record, So it'll be me this coming Thursday,
but I will have an episode dedicated to tips like
(07:19):
this to help get you through the holidays and any
stress or anxiety that you might be feeling around this time. Okay.
Next email is from Liz Hey. On your December third
(07:40):
podcast episode, you mentioned the Headspace app and you said
that you'd love other recommendations for meditation and mindfulness apps.
One that I really like a lot is called Shine.
The Shine app dot com is where you can find
it and has a lot of free content, and even
their paid content is at a lower price point than
other meditation apps, and it is made for a diverse
community of users. Another recommendation for meditation is the tem
(08:04):
per Cent Happier app, and the podcast is great to
Dan Harris would be an amazing guest on the Four
Things podcast. I also love the Outweigh song can't wait
to hear the whole thing one day. Happy holidays, your friend, Liz.
So yeah, I wanted to share this one. It's not
really a question, it's just Hey, if anybody else is
looking for apps out there that might be helpful, Liz
is hooking you up. But also if y'all have guest
(08:26):
ideas for the podcast or you know of people that
you want to hear on here, that's another thing you
can email me about. Just send me a note at
four Things with Amy Brown at gmail dot com if
you have someone that you would love to hear on
the podcast. I definitely appreciate y'all letting me know who
would be good to talk to. Next email is from
Jennifer Hey. Amy. One of my favorite parts of the
days when I get to sit down with a cup
(08:48):
of tea and listen to your podcast. I find it
encourages me and helps me feel settled after a busy day.
I teach middle schoolers and I have my own thirteen
year old, so some days are a bit hectic. I
recently started writing four Things I'm grateful For because it
does help remind me in the midst of the chaos
of but there's still a lot to be thankful for.
I've heard you and Eddie say with gusto, clear eyes,
(09:09):
full hearts, can't lose Texas forever, and I would love
to know the origin ps. I recently wore my four
Things pull over out and Three Separate Women stopped me
to say I love your shirt. I have one too.
I felt like I was a part of a secret sisterhood,
which was kind of cool. Well, Jennifer, thank you for
all that you do as a teacher, and yes, I
love that you had that moment with your four Things
pull over. We are like a secret sisterhood in a way.
(09:33):
Anything four Things or a squaw that you have, if
you see somebody out with it, you feel like an
instant connection. Same thing goes with Pimp and Joy. When
I spot a listener out with Pimp and Joy, I
feel like an instant connection. Even my sister will feel like.
She was in the Dallas Airport last weekend and she
saw a guy in a red Pimp and Joy Christmas
hoodie and a born Your hat, and she was like,
(09:54):
what up. I don't know, It's just it's really cool
for us to see that stuff out and about. I
know I've told us to worry a lot, but in
case you're new, One time I was walking in downtown
Austin with Mary and we saw a guy with a
Pimp and Enjoy hat and I got so distracted trying
to yell at him and get his attention that I
ran right into a tree and it was pretty painful
but worth it. So I got to eventually go over
(10:16):
and meet the listener and I just thought it was
so cool they were wearing a Pimp and joy hat.
So back to the email, Jennifer, the clear Eyes, Full
Hearts Can't Lose comes from Friday Night Lights, and that
is such a good show. If y'all are looking for
something to maybe binge this holiday season when you've got
some time off, if you do well, I suggest doing
Friday Night Lights if you have never done it before.
(10:38):
It's such a great show. I looked it up and
you can now watch it on Amazon and Hulu if
you have either of those. It used to me on Netflix,
but I guess they took it off at least I'm
sure it used to be, But y'all can try to
search up where you can watch it. But it is
such a good show. And if you'll know anyone that
happens to already be obsessed with Friday Nightlights. We actually
(10:58):
have a pre made Tammy Taylor or four Things tope
that says clear Eyes, Full Hearts Can't Lose Texas Forever
and Tammy Taylor's coach. Taylor's wife. Once you start watching
the show, you'll understand. But if you're already a fan,
then that's the only reason why you would maybe want
a tote that says those things. Or if you know
somebody else that is a fan, you could get them
this tote as a gift because it's one of our
pre made options. Because it's too late to customize in
(11:19):
time for Christmas, but we have pre made options and
this is one of them. So four Things dot Com
if you want to check that out. Next email is
from Amy. So I listen to your situation on the
Bobby Bones show about your son wanting Elf on the shelf.
I could never do Elf on the shelf because I
have no long term follow through. I saw this meme
and thought of you. Okay, So before I share with
you all the meme picture that she sent me, I
(11:41):
just want to give fair warning that if you've got
a kid listening to the podcast right now, you may
want to pose it or listen to this later. Okay,
one to three, that's your little warning. Okay. So the
meme is they put a little cast on the Elf
on the shelf. It's a little homemade cast made out
of tape and They've even put signatures on it so
it looks legit. It really does. And then the meme says,
(12:02):
poor buddy fell and broke his leg. He has strict
orders from Santa not to move for two weeks. So hey, parents,
that's a great way for yourself to suddenly not be
able to move anymore if you're tired of having to
deal with the elf doing things around the house. You
know what I'm saying, So Amy, thank you for that
funny meme. I definitely laughed when I saw it and thought, oh,
(12:25):
super creative. So that is a wrap for today's emails. Again,
I'm super grateful for everybody that sends stuff in. I
hope you'll have a great rest of your week and
I'll see you again on Thursday for the four Things episode.
All right, talk then by
