Speaker 1 (00:04):
Happy Tuesday, and I guess I should also say Happy
New Year. It's my first week back at work, so
I haven't talked to you in a little while, but
I am excited to be back. And this is the
fifth Thing. It's the bonus episode to the four Things
podcast where you send an emails to me, whether it's
a question or encouraging thought, or just something you want
to share with others, and I read four of them

(00:27):
every Tuesday. I always start this episode off with a quote, though,
and this one is from Henry now In and my
pastor Matt Smallbone shared this in his sermon this last Sunday,
and I thought it was simple and awesome, and I
wrote it down real quick because I thought you needed
to hear it. Here. It is joy does not simply

(00:48):
happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep
choosing it every day. Again. That's Henry now In. And
it takes work for joy, just like gratitude. We talk
about joy and gratitude allow here on the podcast, and
both of those things take work, and there's nothing wrong
with that. Some of you might be thinking, well, I
don't know, it doesn't seem like joy or gratitude should

(01:09):
be that hard or take that much work, but it
is something that you have to practice and choose and
be intentional about every day, you know. It makes me
think of the Mr. Rogers movie that I watched this
last weekend. It's called A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
or something. It's the Tom Hanks one where there's the documentary,
which I highly recommend as well, but this is the

(01:31):
scripted movie one. And there was a scene where Mr.
Rogers wife was talking to this reporter from Esquire magazine,
and I think the reporter I'm paraphrasing, but he just
said something about how you know, what's it like to
be married to someone that's like that all the time?
Or is he really like that or something? And she's like, oh, well, yes,

(01:53):
that's him. He's like that. But he works very hard
to be that amazing person that you see every single
a a very kind, loving, thoughtful, intentional, caring person. But
he puts in the work, He sets himself up, he
does these different routines every single day to make sure
that he can be that person that he wants to

(02:13):
show up as for the world. And that's who we
affectionately know as Mr. Rogers and while he was a
character on TV and his show, he wasn't a character
that was really him. He cared about so much, but
he had to show up for it and choose the
joy and the gratitude and be intentional every day with

(02:34):
how he wanted to live his life. So I also
just wanted to recommend that movie for y'all, And actually,
in this first email, I'm going to do some TV
show recommendations as well. The first one comes from Becky
in Arkansas, and she wrote, Hey, Amy, I'm listening to
your fifth Thing from December twenty two, and I'm so
excited that you're watching a million little things. I wanted
to make sure that you know it is still an

(02:56):
active show. The third season started on November nineteenth. It's
a very short season with four episodes, I think because
of COVID, and next season starts on March four, So
get caught up and watch with me much love, Becky.
So thank you, Becky. I am here to tell you now.
I guess on December twenty two you heard I was
watching it, but now I'm all caught up and it's

(03:16):
such a great show. But I really was confused about
when it was coming back, so thank you for sharing
that it returns on March fourth, And to anybody else,
you still have time to get caught up. That is
a show that Becky and I both recommend and we
want you to watch, and the new season will return
in just a couple of months, so you've got time
to get it in. And another show that I just

(03:38):
want to recommend because we're talking about TV shows here
is ted Lasso because it's awesome. Now. It is on
Apple Plus, so if you don't have that, you're either
going to need to buy it, and ted Lasso makes
it worth it, and there's some other great shows on
Apple Plus I could recommend to you in case you
end up buying it. You're thinking, should I keep paying
for this subscription because there are other things, so email me.
I'll let you know what they are. But you can

(04:00):
also get the free trial, I guess, and then remember
to cancel it once you're done with ted Lasso, because
Ted is amazing. I watched it at the end of
the year, and while I saw a lot of great
things in um given that we were stuck at home
a lot of the year, ted Lasso was my favorite
show of the year, and I laughed. I cried. I

(04:21):
knew nothing about it going into it. I just heard
people talking about it, saw a few people post about it,
and then my husband wanted to watch it, so I thought, Okay,
why not. And then I realized it was about sports
soccer team in England and this American football coach goes
over there to coach soccer, and I just thought, I'm
not gonna be into this. I'm not really a sports person.

(04:42):
But it's so much more than that. I loved Ted.
I want Ted Lasso to be my neighbor. Ted Lasso
on one side, Mr Rodgers on the other side. Which
that's a fun question. Maybe if you could have any
neighbor in the world, who would you choose to be
your neighbors? I would like to hear from you. If

(05:04):
y'all want to share with me, y'all can email those
into me or DM me on Instagram at Radio Amy
and let me know who you would want your neighbors
to be. My next email is from anonymous. Now she
didn't sign it anonymous, but because of the content of
the email, I also want to make sure that you'll
know that if it's something that's sensitive, and I don't
know for sure, if you would want your name out there.

(05:26):
If I haven't heard back from you, if I email
you back, then I go ahead and just say anonymous.
So here you go. Hey, Amy, I just listened to
the Four Things episode where you discussed brain over Binge
by Catherine Hanson. I've been struggling with disordered eating for years,
going back to late elementary and early middle school. I'm
now twenty four and I'm a teacher, and I have
the same issues and a terrible relationship with food. It

(05:48):
seems like food controls my life and I need to
break free. I listened to the Outweigh series and I
was intrigued and validated, but honestly it wasn't ready to
give up binge eating. It's such a strange relation ship
that I have with binge eating. I look forward to
a binge, I enjoy the binge for a moment, and
then I feel awful, both physically and emotionally. I need
and want to make changes, and I'm ready to grow.

(06:11):
I need this. I'm wondering which book you recommend to
read first. Catherine Hansen has to listed on Amazon titled
Brain over Binge. I don't want to buy both. I'm
on a tight teacher's salary. So which do you recommend?
I start with Belower the two titles and the email
link had was the Brain over Binge, which is the

(06:32):
book that I read, and then the Brain over Binge
Recovery Guide. And so what I will recommend to you
and anyone else listening that has been eating in their life.
I recommend Brain over Bench just the book, not the
recovery guide. I bought both. I did not find the
recovery guide necessary, So get the book, read it later.

(06:52):
If you decide you feel like you want the recovery guide,
email you're back. I'll send you my copy if I
can find it. If not, I'll order one for you.
But I really feel like Katherine has enough content out there.
The book was enough for me. But then also I
watched YouTube videos that she had up, which are free.
She has a Brain over Binge podcast. You can also

(07:12):
check out Brain over Binge dot com for more resources.
She has blog posts. There's a lot out there that
can help you, especially since you are in a teacher's salary.
I don't want you're spending like tons of money. There's
content out there where you can be given the tools,
and she does a lot of interviews with people that
also share tools that you can keep in your back
pocket for when you feel a binge coming on, and

(07:35):
eventually you'll get to the point where the binges are
not as desirable as they once were. I know exactly
what you're talking about. I'm sure other people listening and
they know what it feels like to look forward to
one and enjoy it for the moment, but then feel
awful physically and emotionally afterwards, even especially if you purge

(07:55):
after it adds a whole another layer, and purging could
either be throwing up or it could be working out
excessively for hours on end to try to burn all
the calories. Purging looks different, but I'm thankful that you've
recognized you want to change and you're taking the steps
to do it. It's not going to happen overnight, but
my recommendation is the book and then the other content

(08:16):
that Catherine has online. Also, I know you mentioned that
you listen to the Outweigh series that it was on
the Four Things podcast, but I just want to remind
you in case you didn't know or remember, or maybe
even others, that Outweigh actually became its own podcast, So
you have a new episode going up every Saturday on
that podcast that I co host with Lisa Ham, And
there's a lot of great content in there as well,

(08:38):
not always talking about binge, eating per se, but um
other things that you you may have to deal with,
because sometimes what happens is you leave one thing behind
and you hop to another. And I did that once
I was in recovery. After I read Brain over Binge,
I thought, oh wow, okay, I'm I'm in recovery, but

(08:59):
I hoped to some other unhealthy habits that I didn't
realize we're disordered at all. I thought I was actually
doing the right thing, which I was for me at
the time. It was part of my journey. But what
I learned, and what you can learn by listening to
something like Outweigh and hearing all the different stories and
the experts that we have on is that we're just
inundated all over the place with different plans and programs

(09:22):
and diets and this, I mean diet culture is just everywhere.
So you might get a handle on the binging but
then fall captive to something else. But Catherine is a
big Catherine Hansen, the author of Brain over Minge, is
a big anti diet or as well. So if you're
following her stuff, you're in good hands. But I just
wanted to make sure you knew about outweigh as well. Again,
that's every Saturday. Next email is from Rory. Hey, Amy,

(09:56):
what is the name of the self tainer you use?
I know you've talked about it before, but I no
idea which podcast it was on. I don't want to
go back and look. How often do you use it?
Thoughts about this product? So Rory uh and others, because
I know I've seen other emails asking about this. Santo
Pay is my favorite. I know that I've recommended probably
a handful over the last few years, but it always

(10:18):
comes back to Santo Pay and I like the classic
foam and I really prefer to put it on with
the MIT. They actually have a new like velvety blue
mitt that's awesome and if you applied on with circular motion,
you should be good to go. I'm sure there's even
some tutorial videos on YouTube, not that I have taken
the time to put those up, but other people probably

(10:40):
have and I appreciate those people. So you can always
look for that if you are nervous about applying it. Yourself,
but it's it's a good one and you could do
it once a week if you want to maintain the color,
or just case by case, if you have an event
and you want to look a little more tan, then
you can throw it on. I personally have not put
self tanger on in a long time because I haven't

(11:01):
been going anywhere. Okay, next email is from Lindsay. Hey, Amy,
I listened to your episode today with listener brightly and
and finally gave me the courage to send this email
that I have typed several times. I always wondered if
you would do any segments with listeners to ask you
questions or have a segment. I have been extremely passionate
about the topic of grief, specifically as it's related to

(11:23):
infertility and pregnancy loss. I feel like you would give
an amazing voice to this, seeing as how you have
had your own journey to motherhood that involves fertility struggles.
I feel like there are more celebrities and people with
influence that are lending their voice to this topic even more.
But I think unfortunately it's still a taboo topic to discuss.
People don't know what to say, so it's often just
swept under the rug, and lots of women suffer in silence,

(11:46):
and lots of people who would like to support her
just tiptoe around the subject so not to upset her.
I know all of these emotions firsthand, and I would
love to have a discussion about the different facets of
these topics. I would be happy to share my full
story with you if you think that that's a topic
you might like to explore someday. Since one and four
pregnancies end in miscarriage, there might be a way to

(12:07):
incorporate that into the four things theme, maybe four different
stories or something to that effect. You're an inspiration to
me and I would love the opportunity to ask you
a few questions or share my journey and hopes that
it would help another woman struggling. Thank you so much
for your time in reading this Lindsey Brown and Lindsay Yes,
I love this email. So Yes, the answer to your

(12:29):
question is yes, es, Yes, I'm open to doing segments
with listeners. It's actually something that I thought a lot
about over the break. You know, I read your emails,
but I would like for you to have more of
a voice here. I want to take calls on the
podcast or have a place for you to leave voicemails,
not just emails. I want to hear your voice. So
part of my goal for this podcast in is to

(12:50):
do just that. I'm currently working out what that's gonna
look like, but it will be happening. And Lindsay, I
also love your idea of sharing four different stories and
a special fertility episode. So right now I'll just put
it out there that if you have a fertility story
that you're willing to share and you think it might

(13:10):
be of encouragement to other women, just send an email
to four Things with Amy Brown at gmail dot com
and we can work on getting for women together to
record something for you and and also for others that
again want to be of support to women in their
life that might be going through this. Of course, it
will help others feel not alone if they have experienced

(13:32):
a miscarriage or have fertility stuff going on. But then
what about the best friends and the sisters and the
moms and the aunts and the cousins who are like,
what do we do? What do we say? So it
can be a helpful episode for you. And I don't
know why I always just name the women I know
that I've got men listening. It can be for the
husbands that might be an interesting take. What's best for

(13:55):
the husbands to do when their wife has just experienced this.
Of course as a couple you're going through it, but
what's the husband's perspective. I'm curious to know more about that,
or how does the dad respond, or the uncle or
the brother or the male cousins. Just in way you
guys think that I have I left you out because
I know that you are out there listening. So that

(14:18):
is a rap on the emails today. I as always
again appreciate every note that comes in, so keep them
coming again. Four Things with Amy Brown at gmail dot com.
And if you are looking to get more into gratitude
this year in you want to be intentional about that,
we do have our four Things gratitude journals. You can

(14:40):
find them at Radio Amy dot com. That's where you
can find really anything that you need links to, like
pimp and joy stuff or my Amazon favorites page. Sometimes
people are asking about where I got this or that,
and I'm like, oh, well Amazon, and I've got it
up on my favorites page. But if you are looking
to practice more gratitude, you do not need our journal

(15:02):
to do it at all. You can write down four
things each day that you're thankful for in any notebook
or type them into your phone or whatever that looks
like for you. But I will say the journal is
super cute. Mary and I worked really hard on it,
and a lot of people gave it as Christmas gifts
this year, and we love seeing y'all post about the
journal on Instagram and that you're using it and that

(15:23):
you got it as a gift, which is super cool.
So it is something you can buy for yourself or
you can buy for others. And it's more than just
a way to write down four things each day. We've
got encouraging quotes sprinkled throughout. We have fun stickers in
the back. Mary and I included family recipes, one Savory
one suite for you to enjoy as well. So it's

(15:44):
it's a cute little book and it gives back to
Project Meta Share in Haiti. So again, if gratitude is
something you're wanting to get into, and you know, sort
of like when you're trying to go to the gym
and you buy a new outfit and work out outfit
and then you're like Okay, yeah, I'm ready to go.
I feel motivated with my new shoes or my new outfit.
Well this might be like, okay, yeah, I got my
new gratitude journal, now motivated to go do the gratitude.

(16:07):
But there are many more reasons than you know, acute
new journal to practice gratitude, because the health benefits are
off the charts and just mentally what it could do
for you is awesome and physically, so I highly encourage
you to practice gratitude, whether it's with our journal or not.
Again radio Amy dot com for any of that, and

(16:28):
I hope you'll have a great rest of your day
and I will see you on Thursday for four Thanks
