Speaker 1 (00:04):
Happy Tuesday. Welcome to the fifth Thing. I'm Amy and
I'm cat In. Today's quote comes from the Christmas movie
that I'm in that comes out this week. It's are
you quoting yourself? Yeah, but I'm not giving. I don't
honestly remember how it even came out the day of filming,
because we took so many takes and the script changed
a few times. But this is a quote that is
(00:27):
my big, my big bathroom scene, and uh, it's one
line from there. It's about staying true to yourself, like
your favorite version of yourself. And so um, this is
Amy from Holiday Harmony on HBO Max in two days
(00:49):
Thanksgiving Day. You know how many times people have tried
to get me to be cuter, girlier, less girly, more
country less country, But I've learned to hold on to me,
my favorite version of myself. Don't lose yours. Okay, And
it sounds so bad, that's not even how it came out.
That's not how it came out. You want to do
(01:09):
another take because people can watch the movie just get
the real take. They can watch the movie to see
my horrible acting on screen. Awesome. I don't know about awesome,
but on Thursday's episode. I do have the writer, producer,
and the main character, the star of the movie in
(01:33):
my episode, so it's a special Thanksgiving episode. So even
though it's Thanksgiving, there will be a new episode and
Cat and I will be doing a little thing at
the beginning of it, which will be fun, I think,
and Thanksgiving me Thanksgiving issue or something, and then I'll
roll into my chats with the two other women from
the movie that we're involved, and I hope you'll enjoy that.
(01:55):
HBO Max two days. Very nervous people keep thinking like,
oh my gosh, what is happening in the bathroom, And
I'm like, well, you'll understand once you see the movie.
It'll all make sense why my pivotal moment is going
down in the bathroom. Which, speaking of bathrooms, I really
find myself to be a pretty mature adult at times.
(02:17):
But I was in the bathroom the other day, a
public bathroom, and this woman was humming while she peeed,
Like the whole time, I'm trying to where you're going
with this, Well, it was almost like she had to
hum to pee. Was it a song or just like
it was like a meditative No, it wasn't a song.
It was almost like a like like I have to
(02:38):
hum to pee? Oh, like a like a um like yoga.
I'm making this story up in my head, but it
seemed as though she needed to hum in order to
give herself the opportunity to pee. Or do you think
she's like nervous or like there has to be sad
like some people can't beee if it's quiet, right, that's
(02:59):
what I'm talking abou like it's a it's something with
her brain and part of her process of being, which
no judgment at all, but I can't stop thinking about it.
And again, I'm mature and I can understand if she
has to do that, that's fine. But then I'm like,
I've been peeing a couple of times by myself, and
I'm like, I should try this, and I'm like, how's it?
(03:20):
I think that would distract me? Yeah, but if you
need it, you see how yeah? Or if you if
you can't pee in public places? Which also speaking of
being in public places, have we talked about how we
shouldn't squat to pee in public restrooms? Because I always
haven't talked about it, but I don't squat you put
the line up. Yeah, but what if they're oh, toilet
(03:41):
paper if there's a lie line. Okay, smart, smart squad.
I can't squat because I feel like it's like you
can't relax if you're squatting. Well wait, why why shouldn't
we squat? Well, I was talking about on the Bobby
Bone Show, and several people sent me notes saying that
it like messes with the you know, the mechanics of
(04:03):
how you pee or something like it. It messes with
the pelvic floor area and causes dysfunction or something. Well,
I feel like, if you're fine, then you can keep
doing that. No, I feel like my floor it could
be dysfunctioning. It could be dysfunctional because I've never birth children. Yes,
(04:23):
I have two kids, but I adopted them, so I
know that. My sister who's birth four, she ps sometimes,
you know, but I hear that often, but I have not,
and I P and I wonder if it's because I like,
it's very hard for me to hold it. And then
I just see, I'm like, I'm not even Yes, I
(04:47):
mean so that's I don't know if you're a squatter too,
But I heard from multiple experts and my friend Tiffany
actually does this for a living. To like works with
women and the pelvic area, and she has told me
that as well, but I chose to ignore her because
I'd rather squat. I don't want to take the time
to line the toilet. This would be a big life
(05:09):
change for you. Maybe I'll hum while I'm lining the
toilet or something. I don't know. Maybe that onean was
on something. Maybe if you struggle being in public restrooms,
line the toilet, sit down, and hum. Maybe that'll help.
I've got an email from Amanda that I'm going to share. Hey, Amy,
I started listening to your podcast a little over a
(05:29):
year ago. One of my husband's friends suggested it and
the Bobby Bones Show. Since then, her and I have
connected more, and we even went to your live show
and which it all together. I've enjoyed your grief podcasts
lately and have gone back to listen to others. I
was wondering if you have any suggestions or ways to
cope when two people that are important to you pass
(05:50):
in the same year. My grandpa passed away unexpectedly in March,
and then my grandma in August. I've been having a
hard time when I'm alone. I often break down in tears.
Since my grandma was in hospice. They do have grief
counseling offered for family, so I've been looking into that.
All of this happened when I was completing my Licensed
Practical Nursing program. I start that in January. I should
(06:14):
have been excited about my acceptance, but instead was sad
that I couldn't share it with them. I'm also trying
to keep myself together so that my two year old
son doesn't see me cry. Also, how do you do
all the first holidays without them? Thank you for taking
the time to read my email. Feels a little weird
messaging someone that I listened to with such personal information,
but I enjoy listening to both you and cat Amanda.
(06:37):
Which Amanda, I've sent you an email, but I'm sharing
this here for others that might be experiencing grief around
this time, because the holidays are for sure hard, especially
you just lost them this year. And I hope you
had a good time in which it all and I
hope that some of what we shared there was helpful
and maybe you can use that in this process. Two
(06:57):
big losses in one year is really he But you know,
the hospice offering the grief counseling. I hope you do
look further into that and maybe take them up on that,
because my mom was in hospice as well, and I
found their resources to be very helpful. I had no
idea what hospice was until I walked through it with
my mom, zero experience with it, and it's weird how
(07:19):
you're this adult and all these things happen. I never
walked through cancer until it was my mom, and I
had no idea what is all the different stages one
to three four? What does metastasize mean? What is chemo?
What is radiation? What is all? You know, all the
different things. So hospice was one of those things that
my sister and I walked through and we will forever
be grateful for the hospice nurses and the tools and
(07:40):
resources that they have. Now. In addition to that, I'll
say that Megan Divine, who I've had on the podcast before,
has a grief journal. It's called how to Carry What
Can't Be Fixed, And again it's a journal for grief,
and so that might be something you look into just
ordering on Amazon and use it as a tool through
the holiday see reason. And then I don't know about
(08:01):
you cap, but like the crying in front of her son,
which I know he's only two, and I'm not a
parenting expert. Parenting therapy is not your expertise either, but
I'm putting on the spot here. I never saw my
mom cry ever, and that's weird to me because we
experienced some hard things and I did one time, but
she was on her well into her cancer journey and
(08:23):
it was actually over finances for a surgery that she
was maybe going to have, you know, so it wasn't
even it was a stress thing and she finally broke.
But I know that she cried. She would just always
do it privately and never showed that to me. And
so I wonder, though, if it's okay to cry in
front of your kids, as long as it's healthy for
(08:45):
them to see you express emotion, because I wish I
would have seen more of that from moment. Now, I
have no problem crying. I'm not like my mom, and
I have cried a lot. But I just wonder if
there's something to that making sure your son knows that
feelings are okay and you have valid reasons to be sad,
and but at too, I don't know that might be
(09:06):
too young, too's hard. I think that when it comes
to cry in front of your kids, children need to
know that their parents can take care of them. Then
they need to have security. At the same time, I
feel like a lot of times when we don't want
to cry in front of somebody, it's because we're like,
I want to be strong, or I want to be
strong for my kids, or I want people to think
that I'm strong. And if we never see somebody who
we think is strong show emotion like sadness, then we
(09:31):
think that sadness or crying is a sign of weakness,
and then we don't feel open and welcome and okay
to do those things. So I think there needs to
be a little bit of a balance, Like we can't
just be like crying hysterically every day around our children,
but shedding some tears is okay because if I know
I can trust my mom or my dad or whoever,
(09:51):
and they're showing emotion, that's a really good thing to
have connected. Okay, thank you for that. Again, I'm not
an expert, but you've been You've walked through this, so
you're an expert in your experience of it. Right, But
when it comes to what we should be doing grief
wise in front of our kids. I feel like I
need Dr Becky here, Dr Becky Good inside, Dr Becky Kennedy.
(10:14):
If you're a parent and you're not following her on Instagram,
you're missing out. She's I even signed up for her
like monthly, part of a monthly plan. I pay like
a fee every month and I get these special emails
and extra videos from her, and they've been very helpful.
So you could also look into that as well. I
have a list of ways to get out of an
(10:34):
emotional rut in case you happen to be in one,
and I love that. The first thing on the list
is make your bed. Oh my gosh, I've started making
my bed now. Oh I've literally am a bed maker.
It's made right now. Okay, let's go listen, they say seriously,
it's small, but it can help you feel like at
(10:56):
least something in your life is together. So there, make
your bed, take a warm shower. It'll give you a
mental break from reality and you can get lost in
your thoughts. I guess, depending on what those thoughts are,
like Astric, put on new clothes, maybe go to your
closet after you've taken your warm shower and put on
(11:19):
something new. You'll feel more clean and productive, and maybe
it's like a fresh start. Unsubscribed from emails, Apparently decluttering
your inbox can help you feel less overwhelmed and it's
like a nice perch. I totally agree with that, But
I feel like something's happening where I keep unsubscribing from
the same emails over and over and over again. They're
(11:39):
not going away. Do you ever feel like that now?
I just ignore them. I need to unsubscribe. I signed
up for that, like unroll or something some I don't
know if I have it right, but there are companies
out there that you can sign up for it and
they will subscribe you from things for you, but then
you're subscribed to them now and who knows what they're doing.
(12:00):
What I mean. You can go through your closet and
donate things, which you know, speaking of the email purging,
if you go get rid of clothes that you don't
wear anymore and then you donate them, it kind of
has a feel good aspect to it. To sit somewhere
other than your bed. Staying in bed can just make
you feel swallowed by your surroundings. Have a change of scenery,
(12:22):
also use a planner or a calendar to make plans.
That's me. I'm a calendar color. You'll get there. You're
almost thirties three and I became calendar girl at like forty.
Like a paper calendar. Oh no, now like a Google calendar, digital, small, digital,
color coded. You're a digital girl. Everyone has their own color.
(12:45):
What color am I like my kids and stuff? Oh?
I don't, no, no, no, I want a color. You
want me to put my friends stuff in my calendar.
I'm going to share my calendar so you know what
I'm doing all the time. Okay uh. And then lastly,
go for a walk, which we talk about that one
often too. If you're able to go do that, feeling,
the feeling of air on your face can make a
big difference. And maybe some sunshine, which is getting dark
(13:08):
so early now, so it's harder to get those walks in,
especially if you work a full day. But I guess
next spring we can take some take some afternoon walks.
So seriously, sunset around here is like four or forty.
It's bad. But wait, they're getting rid of that. I
do know that when they're getting rid of daylight saving,
so it will change one more time, so we get
the hour back, and then it's to never happen again
(13:29):
in the whole world, in the whole in the whole
United States. I don't know if it's a global thing.
I don't know. It's not okay, Arizona doesn't even they've
never they don't have it. Good for Arizona for sticking
up for what they believe in, because it doesn't make
any sense. There's no point of it. It was for
farmers or something. I think. Good for Arizona holding onto
the favorite versions of themselves full circle. But that's something
(13:55):
to look forward to. Soon we'll be able to walk
you around. You know, good to know. Never know what
you're gonna learn here. Christmas shopping is up at the
shop for dot com if you want to look for
gifts that give back. There's so many cute and high quality,
meaningful for things items. They even have a Christmas watching sweatshirt.
(14:16):
You probably can't order it now to get it in
time to watch Holiday Harmony featuring Me on HBO Max,
but you could get it in time for other Christmas
movies or would be a really cute gift for someone
in your life that likes Christmas movies. Does it say,
this is my Christmas watching sweatshirt. Yeah, that's funny, and
you were it whenever you're watching Christmas movies or you're
running rands, like it doesn't matter, but it's so cute. Which, again,
(14:39):
Thursday is the big day. I can't believe it's already here.
I can't believe. I remember walking with you and going
through your lines and that was like, was it in in
the summer, Yeah, I may, it was before this. Yeah,
I filmed in May, which on Thursday's episode, I'll share
with you all something ridiculous that I did to my
(15:00):
a face right before I flew out to film, and
I had to cover it up with makeup. I don't
remember what that was. I don't know why I do
these things to myself. I don't know that. You know.
It's not like I talked about it. I just was like,
why do we do this move self? I'm about to
go fill my first ever movie. Who knows if I'll
ever get an opportunity to another movie again, and well,
(15:21):
we'll see, we'll see. Oh, we talk about that. In
my interview with the writer and producer, they talked about
if there's a possible sequel, and then she said that
my name has even come up for other things, Amy.
What if there's a sequel and you become the star
se no, no, no, no, let's pump the bracks. Pump
the bracks. Why put it out there? Okay, yeah, put
it out there? Why not? I mean, honestly, I'm just
(15:43):
thankful to know that things weren't so bad. Then my
name never comes up in anything, so that's fun. They'll
put links to anything from the shop Forward in the
show notes. I feel like that's an easy way to
get it. Or y'all can just hit up all the
things poor Things dot com, shot Forward dot com. It
all goes to the same website. And I will talk
to you all again on Thursday, even though it's Thanksgiving.
(16:05):
We definitely have this new episode for y'all, and I
hope you'll you'll check it out. All right, have the
day You need to have Cat? Where can people find
you on Instagram? At at cat dot defata and at
