Sports on Wellington Mornings.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Johnny as for Friday's sport This weekend is Weekend Sports
host Jason Piney, Morning Piney and All Sports Breakfast hosts
Adam Cooper Coops.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
How you doing very good?

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Nick Piney. I want to start with you because I
know you had a little bit to do with them.
I had a lot to do with them in the
eighties and a really good guy. I couldn't talk about
this family with bigger praise. Chris Kenny, Michael's father. He
got the opportunity to meet him. Once he ripped my
hand off with a handshake. He looked me in the
eye went, WHOA, I'm not going anywhere near that. I'm

(01:00):
not gonna even think a real hard old fella, you know.
And he did an amazing, amazing amount of work for
people and potty to do kids that were in trouble.
You know. He was a legend. And Michael Well, I
couldn't speak more highly of him. He was because he
was a basketball player as well. I don't know whether
you realized that here yet.

Speaker 4 (01:17):
I had to hight for it, and he definitely did.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
And he was an athlete and great guy and a
great boxer, and I hadn't seen him for a long
long time. But I really I felt really sad when
I got told the news before I went on the show,
you know, and you get suddenly someone you know well
and dies. So I'd like to get to your thoughts
on him.

Speaker 4 (01:34):
Yeah, I didn't know Michael Kenny well. I met him
very briefly when we inducted him into the Wellington Sports
Legends in twenty nineteen. He seemed almost reluctant to be
to have his achievements recognized, which I thought was really interesting,
very humble. I do remember him winning the gold medal
in nineteen ninety because I watched it at the Southern

(01:55):
Cross here in Wellington on a big screen down there,
and amongst the others who I wasn't watching it necessarily
with the same group of people, but was her sister,
Vanessa Kenny. I kinden you from Victoria University, and so
just the euphoria when Michael won that gold medal, you know,
and and a member of his family there as well,

(02:16):
you know, obviously far too young. Sixty is very very
young to be going. But you know in a week
where we've also lost Norm Hewett, it was it was
a sad one for for for Wellington sports fans.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Now you mentioned Vanessa, I can tell a quick story.
Is right for me to tell my quick that's your
show that Michael Giney was fighting, you know, a fight about.
It wasn't an Olympic about. It was about somewhere and
it was being filmed and Chris Kenny was his coach
and his dad his dad. Yeah, yeah, So he wasn't
going that well. And he came the bell rang and

(02:51):
he went to the seat and he said, he pointed
to Vanessa and the audience who was in the audiences,
and he said, do you want me to get Vanessa
to come and fight this fight? And I never forget
that for the day, you know, till the day I die.
I mean betted your son say that. So that's why
that's my little great story of Michael Guiney.

Speaker 4 (03:09):
Funeral service tomorrow I think on the Company Coast now
eleven o'clock.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Yes, tomorrow you can find the details. Central Pulse hosts
the Tactics on Monday in the final round of the
A and Z by gosh coops. How well have the
Pulse doing. I know we've been talking a lot about
the Saints stemmy quarterfinals tonight that the Pulse had been
Wellington's sporting shining arm.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
Well, yeah, one of one of many successes this year,
haven't they in Wellington Sport. We had the Hurricanes to
do incredibly well, the Phoenix being historic, the Saints obviously,
and we'll talk about their play in final tonight, but yeah,
Pulse have been absolutely amazing. We've talked about it almost
every week, just the injuries that they've faced and hurdles
they've overcome under a brand new coach this year. Quite
remarkable that the very last game of the round robin
and the A and Z Premiership, it's Monday night, it's

(03:50):
Pulse hosting the Tactics and those team two teams are
level on points at the top of the table, Tactics
slightly ahead on goal difference. But isn't it great that
it's coming down to the very last game and the
very last round two decides who hosts the Grand Final,
but more importantly goes through automatically to the Grand Final
because it's only a top three playoff format for the netball,

(04:11):
and so the two plays three will decide who goes through.
So I know the Pulse love playing at tesp Arena
much like the Saints do. And I'd say that they're
going to have a huge crowd. They're sharing them on
Monday nights to hopefully lock in a playoff game here
in Wellington the weekend after. So yeah, an amazing season
so far, but I know that they are not celebrating

(04:31):
by any means yet. They're determined to get the job done.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Piney, your thoughts on the Pulse is fantastic year fantastic.

Speaker 4 (04:37):
I can't add much. Yeah, Keeps has been all over it,
and yeah it's some you know sometimes you get quirks
of the draw, don't you, And yeah, it's it's affectively
a shoot it's a shootout to host and almost certainly
will be a precursor to the Grand Final because I
think whoever doesn't go through will win the two v
three and so they'll they'll face off again and a

(04:58):
fortnight later.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
All right, let's talk all blacks versus Fiji and San Diego.
When I first heard about this, I thought, well, I
have this idea, great idea, you know, put international rugby
into America. I mean, it'll all have something to do
with the organization that are behind the All Blacks because
they want to push the game as a world game.
Love the idea, I love the love everything about it. Piney,
what do you think when the team's been named. We've

(05:20):
talked about it briefly. How are you feeling.

Speaker 4 (05:22):
I like the team, you know, and it was always
going to be a very different team from the one
that was rolled out against England and both Test match
It's just one change across those two Tests, and that
was injury enforced, so yeah, there was always going to
be a lot of changes. Really looking forward to seeing
Billy Proctor at center. I think he's been superb for
the Hurricanes for a couple of seasons now, has been
knocking on that door. And I read a really interesting

(05:44):
piece from Gregor Paul and The Herald these last couple
of days talking about Billy Proctor's attributes and the fact
that Rico Yowani, who's been the incumbent cener center in
the All Blacks for the last two or three years,
has got competition for that thirteen Jersey and I just
can't wait to see Billy Proct at a borrow and
Pussily a TOSSI coming off the bench as well.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
Yeah, well, Coops Marsha justin Marshall's Mountain, almost eluded that
there's something going on, hasn't he?

Speaker 3 (06:09):
Well, he suggested that Billy Proctor has got a solid
future in the number thirteen Jersey, hasn't he? And I
don't think there'd be too many arguments across the board
in regards to that, because he's rarely proven himself at
super rugby level both as a really competent and strong,
reliable midfielder, but also growing into quite a strong leader
as well, and someone who's a real team man and
has been I think keat a lot of the Hurricanes

(06:30):
strong culture as well, so thoroughly deserved this appointment as
a devout start. And again I think we're going to
see a lot more of Billy Proctor this year, especially
some of these bigger tests. I mean, the thing is,
you look at the starting fifteen, it's one that probably
wouldn't let you down even against some of these top
top nations that the All Blacks be playing against. There's
still some huge experience across the park, isn't there?

Speaker 2 (06:51):
You know?

Speaker 3 (06:51):
With Damien McKenzie, Boden, Barrett still there. You know, Scott
Barrett the captain still there along with Ardie Savez. So
it's a genuinely good starting fifteen that that could be
competitive in any test. And it's I guess the bench
where we'll see some new blood come through.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
I know we were going to talk about it, but
you know, with people now the rumors sort of out
about Artie Savia maybe playing for Mina Pacifica next year.
I don't want to go into it too much because
we don't know. It's just rumors, and but it's getting
to the point where it's getting stronger. For me, i'd
be heartbroken.

Speaker 4 (07:24):
I thought that too, Nick, But then I thought more
about it, and I thought, you know what, it would
be an amazing boost to Myna PACIFICA. A player of
Artie's stature, his leadership, his influence around a group of
players would be incredible for a franchise that's really struggled
for relevance. Morena Pacifica. Instantly Artie Savier would give them relevance,
and of course I want them to be a Hurricane,

(07:46):
But then you look at the Hurricanes of this year
and without Artie save remember he was playing in Japan.
They had one of their best ever seasons. Braden Yosse
was one of the standout players in the comp. If
Artie had been here, he wouldn't have got that opportunity.
Peter Larkeye two plus Kaifi, Devin Flanders, Brad Shields. It's
a good cohort of loose forwards here. I don't want
Artie to go. I always want Ardie Savia and a

(08:08):
team that I support. But it's not the worst case
scenari on terms of the Hurricanes or what he would
do for more one a pacificate.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
He hasn't stopped my anxiety coops. My anxiety of losing
artisarv is still there.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
It's disappointing, isn't it, Especially with someone that's that's been
such a proud and strong welling Tonian, you know, going
through it, coming through with his brother Julian. And that's
another aspect of this, you know, if he was to
go to wider pacifica he joins Julian Savea there as well,
and we know how close those two are and how
they've shared a lot of their rugby journeys with each other.
So not there's been murmurings around this ever since he

(08:41):
decided to go to Japan, would he The Hurricanes have
always expected him to come back, but there was always
that inkling that a move like this was possible. And
you know, judging by the information the Herald have been
able to maintain, it's obtained. I should say it's it's
looking pretty likely that he won't be playing his rugby
here on Wellington next year.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
I'm sorry, I feel a little bit emotional about it
because I know it so much.

Speaker 4 (09:04):
You've just been giving a fright.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
I was like, I just still.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
Feel I mean, I say so perfectly. Party, We've got
loose forwards coming out of our backside. We've got you know,
ad quality ones. But Ardie Sarvis World Player of the Year,
Ardie Savi is Ardie Saba. There's only one Ardie Savia anyway, Saints.
I'm a bit excited because he's a basketball game on tonight. Guys,

(09:27):
do you know about it?

Speaker 3 (09:27):
You just be talking about it and wanting, yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:29):
Do you know about the basketball game?

Speaker 4 (09:31):
By I'm all over the basketball game. I saw the
Franklin Balls at the airport last night. Actually, I was
there picking my wife up and as we walked past
the Franklin balls. My wife Pix goes up the Saints
and got a couple of dirty looks from the Franklin balls.
So you have already fired the first psychological shot.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
That disappointed me this morning, because when you told me
that this morning, I was looking out looking at the
fog and thinking hopefully I still stuck at all Good Airport.

Speaker 3 (09:58):
So it's on tonight and is on? Isn't that playoff
basketball back? And first thing, isn't it great to actually
have the teams that have made it to the playoffs?
And aren't these spots the ones that are hosting the games?
I remember last time, you know, there was playoff basketball
and potty Doer, You and I were there watching the Saints,
but it was certainly we want it, yeah, but it
felt like a neutral venue did in It so great

(10:18):
that you know that the individual clubs, no matter who
they are, across the country, the likes of Canterbury and
Aukland to a tata, have been rewarded with their top
play things. But teams like the Saints and like Tartanuki
the other night are able to host these games bringing
all their home fans, and Saints got their full roster
back for the first time this season. How cool is that?

Speaker 4 (10:36):
Can I ask you both this? If they do beat
the Balls tonight, which I think they will do, you
back them, go to Auckland and beat the two of
Tata and then probably go to Canterbury and beat the Rams.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
You know what I reckon? Out of those three games tonight,
it's the toughest.

Speaker 4 (10:50):
Canterbury one about nineteen games in a row. They just
lost their last game before that. I think I think
that they've got it. They've got an amazing point guard.
I can't remember his name, but he is amazing the
point guard for Canterbury. But that's you know, I think
I think we can beat Canterbury. So get through tonight
and you're and you're just ready to hang up another.

Speaker 2 (11:09):
P No, no, no, no. We Saints are a bit
smarter than that. We're one game at a time and
I think tonight's the toughest one of them. All. Right,
there you go. Then this gets you on the ladder,
doesn't It gives you keeps you going. If you lose tonight,
you're gone. You lose the next on Wednesday, you're gone,
And lose the following Sunday, you're gone. At least you're
in with a chance.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
And a lot of these other teams have a huge
gap in games, don't they two weeks off? Yeah, two
weeks off? Crazy? So yeah, I mean, momentum is great
and and having you know, Azili half a back right
at the right time. Troy Plumtree back after.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
Has he made the team?

Speaker 3 (11:41):
Think you think he's in there?

Speaker 2 (11:43):
He hasn't been around.

Speaker 4 (11:44):
Is X Checker still the sponsor that X Checken night club?
Is that still the sponsor of the Saints?

Speaker 2 (11:49):
Come on, poney, give me a break. That was a
great I don't I don't bring you up and Shaturday
and stay? Is that? Do you still play football? Pioney?
Are you a center back? That big guy with the
log here playing center back? Come on, thank you guys
so much. It's Friday, out of ibe, a little bit

(12:10):
out of control. It's because it's a big day in Wellington.
