Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talks dB. It's the Friday sport gigarf with
the glass Sharp servicing Wellington for over forty years.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
We're doing a bit of a special this morning for
our sports slot. We're going to go to South Africa.
Joining us now is News Talks. Hebb's commentator Elliott Smith
out of Cape Town ahead of this test and this
weekend with twenty four hours to think about it. Elliott,
what are you what's your big takeout of the changes?

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Well, I think next potentially it's a changing of the
guard of course to feaming out someday morning goes your time.
But I think there's a lot to like it, a
lot of youthful experience the iman Will Jordan's been around
for it for a few seasons now. But you look
at Waller's the TV quarters right at the blind side
and at half back himself, and then some of the

(01:11):
other changes around that, TJ. Pitt and Ara Bowden, Barrett
coming on to the beach. It feels like this is
the useful exuberance that boys to be the backbone of
the All Blacks. I think for the next three or
four years might be getting a hit of myself, but
there's a lot to like about the way that you
know Wallace the CD has played for the Chiefs this

(01:32):
year and what he might bring good to the all
Black full pack course is ratherma young exciting player and
Will Jordan at the back is the plaset has covered
that the scene Jersey for a number of seasons now
and gets his opportunity and the biggest the test match
is a big Test match in South Africa. So overall
I really like the changes the profile obviously on Sunday morning,

(01:52):
but I think there's an eye to the future from
what Scott Robertson's doing here.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Why would he actually make those changes now though? Why
wouldn't he do it at a home game rather than
you know, one of the most hardest places to play.
You're going to bring all these guys in the start.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
Well, I think you'll learn a lot about these players.
And I think if he selected the same side as
last week, maybe with the change here or there, you
learn pretty much the same things you did last week
and you might be to win, but you don't learn
anything further By putting these players in for a big opportunity.
You know in case Down you learn a lot about them.
You learn a lot about the way Will Jordan gets

(02:31):
play at fullback. You learn about Wall it's a teacha
and what he might do on the blind side, and
in course is Rasama as well. You learn you know,
the all black bench has been a major issue in
the last twenty minutes of the TIFs matches, not just
last week in cap Down but that's sorry at Alice Park,
but previously in Auckland and Wellington Mains, Argentina as well.
It's struggled to get going. So you learn a bit

(02:53):
about what it's like having t the pit Andarra back
on the bench and Soden Barret as well about how
vacant effects test matches. So there are still some big
test matches to come this year and I think if
you've rolled up the same thing you would have a
little bit. But I think by changing things around you
learn a lot more and you sack things up to
look to get a reaction on the park as well,

(03:14):
and from Norway perspective, hopefully get that win elier.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
You there, you're amongst them, you're watching them train, you're
you're seeing them at the hotels. I mean what's paranata
and Barrett's feeling? What are they what's their body language
telling you? I mean that's quite major droppings.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
Yeah it is, but I think they've got they've embraced it,
like I think they've embraced the challenges have been given
this week. This is a difference for them, but it's
also a role that have played before pe pet and
backed up Aaron Smith's the vast majority of his Test matches.
He's probably at the seventy five percent of his career
because Aaron Smifth really got injured and and a coming

(03:51):
off the bench to close out Peace matches. Soden Barrett
started in that role when he first came into the
Test team struggled to cracket. He was seen as a
bench specialist, so for quite some time at the start
of his career it and he also did it against
England earlier on the seasons. It's a great effect one
of the All Blacks one if not two Keath matches
against England. So it's about the best thing for the

(04:13):
team and the players thing to have embraced it for it.
From my understanding, I think you look at it as
well and go we're so conditioned to thinking that the
starters are the most important people in the team, the
ones to fifteen, and while that probably still holds true
to an extent, numbers sixteen to twenty three. It's so
important now in test rugby to close out games, to

(04:34):
add that finishing touch, to add that energy in the
last fifteen, twenty twenty five minutes, whatever it might be,
that the start, that the finishes I think are just
as important as the run on players and the spring
box have embraced that was there. There were zeros being
to which the neck name the bomb squad. You know
that's they've given them a bit of personality. I think

(04:56):
the All Blacks need to build something around the depth
that they've got there and the experience to try and
close that games in a similar way to what South
Africa was able to do last week at at Al's Park.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Tell us about the vibe on the street in Cape Town,
I mean, do we are we feeling confident as a
Kiwi's tourists there? What's the vibe?

Speaker 3 (05:17):
Magnificent city? It really is. I haven't seen too many
New Zealanders around. There's an All Blacks tour group here
and I know there's another couple of tour groups around
that have been venturing around the various parts of Africa.
I think I went to George and a couple other
spots in recent times. So I believe the Kiwis are
due to flooding in the next twenty four hours. Were

(05:37):
thereabout that. The thing about Cape Town, this goes back
to the aparthe there of the All Blacks, is that
the All Black South Africa, Bill Black and Woth had
a very strong support of base here in Cape Town.
Sort of the locals support of the All Blacks because
they didn't feel South Africa represented them, and so that

(05:58):
still holds true. You see a lot of All Blacks
jerseys around the streets thrown from people that live here,
and they've got a great reception when they live here
in Capetown around the hotel as well. Still say of
supporters of the All Blacks that are based here in
Capetown wearing those All Blacks Tuesdays and supporting them. So
while I won't be a home at the scene necessarily

(06:19):
Sunday morning, your time at Capdown Stadium, there will be
a lot of his films support in the stands, which
can only be a healthy thing from an all black
perspective and you.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
Can catch Elliott Smith, our rugby commentator on iHeartRadio Gold
Sport and of course u Stalk st B from about
three o'clock Sunday morning. I'm looking at Adam Cooper to
make sure I've got the timing right. Do we go
straight to air? Do we go straight to air at
the start of the game.

Speaker 4 (06:42):
A bit of a build up, Nick is a bit
of a builder and then on board for kickoff right
on three. Okay, hopefully no noise is training out the
heart of this time no.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Three eighties flag over the top right, joined by Adam
Cooper in the studio. Right now, Coops, you've just heard
what Elliott's got to say. I know you, me and
you have both been very very excited about there. But
let's talk Wellington Lyons at home against South and at
Potido A Park tomorrow afternoon. Now I hear the weather's
going to but it's nice. I'm going out there nice.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
I mean, yeah, it's not looking good, I will say,
but which is a real shame because you know, this
was a great idea at the start of the season,
getting out to the community, really nice ground. You're so
close to the action and you know, nice little atmosphere there.
But yeah, unfortunately the weather looks like it could play
will come into play again tomorrow rain winds forecast, which

(07:29):
won't be great. There's been a couple of shockers there
this year so far. Already for the lines unfortunately because
it is a great idea. But aside from that, the
Lions are in a great run of form four from
four so far. Big win over Canterbury last week so good.
Getting a huge win over Cannabury, including winning in Canterbury
and Canterbury a nice little ground they had and hung
Yura as well, very similar to Pottydoor Park. So they're

(07:50):
probably gonna have to go through the rest of the
season without the captain. Duplas KDF got a broken jaw
a couple of weeks ago, so he's not going to
be featuring for quite some time, if at all, for
the rest of the season, which which is not great.
Judy and Savia got a bit of a head knock
last week and it's concussion toy, so he's not playing
this week as well. But Matt Proctor is back in
obviously a one test all Black, you know, long servant

(08:13):
of rugby here and Wellington so he's back in the
starting lineup as well. So yeah, I think hopefully another
win for Wellington tomorrow. They should do and and get
the ball rolling and garden Basher back in at first
five indeed. Yep, So yeah, real boost of experience when
you can call those those guys back and really nice
to see players that have been involved in club rugby
this year get rewarded. You know, it looks a couple
of the Patoni guys, the likes of t J Clark

(08:33):
and others. You know that they have been rewarded.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
Solomon, the young kid from Scott's College is at the Solomon.

Speaker 4 (08:40):
And he again club rugby and club rugby for PTONI
as well. So yeah, great, great run of for me
this year.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
I hear he's pretty good.

Speaker 4 (08:46):
He's very good. Yeah, he's come on in certain moments
of the games and and look pretty strong and pretty competitive.
Small guy, but he's been a force in the back
line so far.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
His dad ain't no small guy or was not so
school by and his mother was a fantastic footballer. So yeah,
we'll keep an eye on them. Chatham Cup. Paul Iifel's
coaching Washington Olympics. I think that's quite. I like the
idea about him and the bubble and squeaks the Greeks.
You know, they're playing Auckland FC and what they're calling
a neral neutral ground at North Auckland.

Speaker 4 (09:18):
Yeah, ridiculous, isn't it that? You know, I guess at
the end of the day, if they're going to choose
a venue, and there is always a chance that some
team from that city, as an example, they could have
chose a Newtown Park and then you know Wellington Olympic
had the advantage. But it does seem too suspiciously and
probably commercially and cost wise always go to Auckland. So

(09:39):
I think Auckland teams just always seem to have an
advantage here. The final is often played at North Harbor
Stadium and that's where Olympic have to go to do
the job tomorrow Tomorrow night under lights. It'll be seven
o'clock kickoff. These are two great rivals. They've played each
other twice in the last twelve months. Olympic had the
win in the National League Final, which is the end
of season final from all the teams of the leagues

(09:59):
around New Zealand, but then Auckland City had the edge.
They when they played off for the Oceania Champions League,
so real rivalry and who you got I'm going to
go Olympic.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (10:09):
I have chatted to Paul Lifel during the week. He's
pretty excited. So he could actually go back to back
because he coached christ Church United to the Chatham Cup
last year and then has made them move back to
Wellington and here he is trying to trying to go
to in a row under different colors, So that would
be quite remarkable.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
That was the one bit of information that I knew
about the Chattera Cup, and I was going to do it.

Speaker 4 (10:27):
You just blew me out of the waterway sort of
asked me about it.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
Paul Eifel coaching could be back to back Wellington Liic,
go Wellington Olympic. I hope, I remembered at the end
of the show, you give them note. I mean that's
you know, Chatham Cup's still pretty big.

Speaker 4 (10:41):
I mean, I mean and football wise, so that's where
everyone wants. That's the trophy that everyone wants to lift.
Give them the history and everything else.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
Okay, really really quickly, you've got a go. We've got
the juicy yelling in our all Blacks or South Africa
all Blacks. I think so too. Good on you, Joey.
I'm looking waking up early to hear your show tomorrow,
Adam Cooper All Sports Breakfast at seven o'clock tomorrow morning.

Speaker 1 (11:01):
