Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from news Talk said B it's the Friday sport kickoff
with the glass shop servicing Wellington for over forty years.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
News Talk said, B Wellington Mornings, we do it every
Friday morning.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Joining us for the Friday sports kickoff.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
As we get ready for the weekend is Sports Weekend
Sports host Jason pine Morning Piney, Good Morning Neck and
All Sports Breakfast host Adam Cooper. Before we get into
good Morning, Adam, Good morning. That was pretty rude of me,
wasn't it, Piney. I read with sadness about the death
of Sam Malcolmson. Now I knew that he was early.

(00:57):
He's been ill for quite a while. I only met
him a couple of times. But all I can say
is from a non football person, he was an outstanding
to represent your sport. Yeah, I mean what he did
for your sport over decades cannot be equal.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:14):
Born in Scotland but came to New Zealand in the
early seventies, played for Wellington Diamond United here in the
Capitol as a striker. Oddly enough, because he made his
name as a defender, Yes, a hard nosed defender. And
you know, moved to other clubs he played, but for
Stop Out as well, famous Wellington club. But it was
part of the eighty two fee for World Cup squad
that went to Spain, first time ever New Zealand had

(01:36):
been there. Played in the first game against Scotland, which
would have been a special moment from playing against the
country of his birth. Fifteen caps. But yeah, beyond his
playing career, became a real real voice on the game,
utter enthusiasm, honestly the number of time also he would
let you know if you've got something wrong or he
didn't agree with what you were doing. Number of texts
I got from Sam Malklinson after a commentary or something

(01:57):
like that. He was always very respectful, but he was
like Piney. I used to this. I used to hear
a Scottish per you know Piney. No, that wasn't right.
But I actually got a text from him last week
just asking about the all whites and yeah, he hadn't
been well. But yeah, at seventy seven years of age
he has passed away.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
Successful businessman two pinty, I think.

Speaker 4 (02:15):
So, yes, I think so and yeah and yeah. Leadership
positions with the likes of edidosh a new balance, those
sort of you know involved in sport. Yes, they're building
quite a five a side team. I can tell you
up there from that team that's Steve Sumner, Grant Turner,
Duncan Cole and now Sam Malcolmson gone from that eighty
two team. So may he rest well with the with
the others. Navidcent kick around up there.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Yeah, well, and my thoughts are with yours.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
As I said, I only met him a couple of times,
but outstanding man for football and New Zealand. We've lost
a totra. Yep, they've got no question about that. Now, coops,
come on, tell us about the giveaway. You're pretty excited
about this job. But I had a better question than yours.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
But you've got the question.

Speaker 5 (02:51):
Well, they actually said, we've got this Wellingston Lines signs
Jersey to give away. Not on your show, we want
it on the Nick Mills show. So this is special.

Speaker 4 (02:59):
This is big, I said.

Speaker 5 (03:01):
I said, Okay, Wellington Rugby, whatever you say, that's that's
that's so just letting you know that's bs.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
They here we got on his show, but he said
he's too busy to give things.

Speaker 5 (03:10):
So anyway, we've got to signed Wellington Lines Jersey. It's
the twenty twenty four edition. It's obviously got the the
bally Full logo, obviously a charity thanks to Mills Albert
donating the front of Jersey space to that the wonderful
bally Full charity. So it's got all the lines. You
can pick out some of these signatures here, the likes
of t J Clark, Brad Shields. So it's fully signed.
You can check out a photo of it on the

(03:30):
Wellington Morning's Facebook page right now. So we're going to
do this by phone. I think you've clogged up the
phone lines and from all the parking chat this morning.
But Ethan is ready to take the call for someone.
First caller room, well yeah, first with the correct answer,
I reckon. And so the question is named one of
the all blacks who came back to play for Wellington
during the Shield Challenge last week.

Speaker 4 (03:49):
There's two options.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
Just name one of them.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
You have to have their first end second name, yep,
do you only know them by their first note? One
of them had two brothers. There's two brothers that confused
me a little bit.

Speaker 5 (04:00):
So name yeah, name one of the two blacks that
came back in the line of the last weekend.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
You will and you're through.

Speaker 5 (04:06):
You will get the signs jersey and for tickets to
tomorrow's game at the stadium. So there you go.

Speaker 4 (04:11):
Pretty good price and good price.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
Very good outstanding prize. Right, let's start with not we
haven't started, We've already started. But let's talk bayor Plenty Wellington.
We go back to scott is at the first game
at sky Stadium.

Speaker 3 (04:23):
It is, isn't it?

Speaker 2 (04:24):
So we go to back to sky Stadium for bayor Plenty.
Now this is game has got some real real interest
in me because of the Bay of Plenty coach.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
Do we know who that is? Do you don't know
the Bay of Plenty quatus? What is the yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
End? Yes, of course I'm the I'm the expert of
thet expert. Well, I know what he pretty damn well
now he Now, if you want some mongrel and a
guy he's got a bit, a couple of bits of
he's going to come into Wellington that he wants to work.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
Even want to make a mistake, you're gonna spray what
great man? Whatdy gat you talk about? You talk a
guy who loves the sport that he's involved in Richard
Watt loves rugby very remiss and meat. Forget that he
was coaching Bay of Plenty.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
I look so damn good too. Is where the collar
had tired suited up.

Speaker 4 (05:11):
I don't think the Steamers are won this game. Think
Wellington will won it going away. I think they wanted
thirteen plus. They'll be stung by what happened in Blenham
last weekend. They had a great chance to win the
Raan Philly Shield, didn't didn't really play that well to
be honest against Tasman. Now they've got only to occupy
them winning the NPC, so some things down At the moment,
there's still top of the table, although Tasman have played
one fewer game. I think Wellington will win the seas

(05:34):
Leed tomorrow.

Speaker 5 (05:34):
Adam Cooper, Yeah no, I think Wellington really will bounce back.
They just looked a little bit out of sorts down
there and Blenham last week whether you know, they were
just stunned by the occasion of another chance at the
rand Philly Shield, the loud and passionate crowd that was
there in a beautiful afternoon and Blenham last Sunday and
it was a really disappointing outcome for the Wellington Lions.
You know, I think a lot of people themselves included,

(05:55):
probably thought they'd be carrying some extra silver. We're back
on the short plane turret back here after that match,
so I think, you know, we've seen a few tweaks
made to the starting lineup, and we've seen, you know,
just some slight positional changes, Brad Shields back to where
he usually plays, and a few other bits and pieces
like that. So I think we'll see Wellington come back,
Ridley Higgins back at his usual position of midfield as

(06:16):
well as opposed to the wing from last week. So,
I mean, we talked about the impact of the All Blacks,
those two guys coming back last week. Nick, maybe it
wasn't the best decision to start them.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
I knew it wasn't the best decision. I said they
should have been impact players that came off the bench.
No one wondered you both anyway, Let's not get into that.
I'm going to go I'm going to disagree with you
both again. You obviously haven't been watching bad pen any play.
They're a good team. Richard Watt is not going to
come down here and make this an easy game for one.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
I'm not, so I'm going to go.

Speaker 4 (06:44):
Do you think they have many will win the game
of rugby?

Speaker 2 (06:46):
You know Piney, how well do you know me? You
know that I've got a favorite saying with anything, both
of you do. No, I've got a favorite saying about sport.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
What is it?

Speaker 2 (06:54):
Momentum is key something a little bit worse than that,
but we can't repeat it. We can't repeat it. I
thought it was the five p's preparation prevents performance. I
love that too, But momentum is a mother something to
think about that, And momentum is in Bay of plenty side,
not on Onontington.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
They've just lost, lost the chance of the Ramfley shield.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
Had their ass I think their asses were well and
truly whipped and blend them. I know you guys are
too nice to say that, but I was so disappointed
with that game. So I reckon, I'm going to go
Bay a plenty on that.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
There you go up, lock it in, it's gone. Then
let's talk about all blacks. I mean that's what we
should be here. Let's talk about all blacks.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
I think all blacks are going to whip this pretty quickly,
I mean pretty easily, Piney.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
I hope so, I think they need to. I think
you know, if you're at the start of the year,
if you said, if you said to people, then we did,
you know how many losses are acceptable? In Scott Robertson's
first year as All Blacks coach, most people will kind
of around the two or three. They've lost three already
through seven, they've got seven more test matches. You wouldn't
want to lose a bit of Slow Cup, you absolutely well.
I think people would forgive even if you lost maybe

(07:58):
to Island or France back end of the year and
you got through with maybe four even five losses. It
doesn't seem right for an All Blacks team. But if
you keep the blender Slow Cup, that's something they they
always say it's the second most important trophy to us.
Australia are having a bit of a rough time of
things at the moment coach now by joshmand of course,
but had sixty put on them by Argentina last week. Yeah,
to be fair two weekends ago. You know, you wouldn't

(08:21):
want to lose tomorrow. We're sold out next week here
in Wellington that I have sold out, but I think
they'll be okay, I would have liked to see some
more changes. What I hope is they win and then
there are some changes here. I want to see Billy
Procter back in the all blax Jersey. I don't know
what he did wrong, played well and the only test
he got given and then hasn't been cited.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
So no, they thought he played amazingly well.

Speaker 4 (08:40):
It was only it was only against Fiji, but that
he did.

Speaker 3 (08:43):
Play amazingly well.

Speaker 2 (08:44):
You know. I think same for Williams. I thought Williams
has been a sensation, a prop absolute sensation.

Speaker 4 (08:50):
The Greeks back is you know, it's good?

Speaker 2 (08:51):
Sorry, all right, Adam Cooper, what do you think? I mean,
what do you think is going to actually happen? Do
you think Australia have got any chance?

Speaker 5 (08:58):
Whatsoeither No, I think when you're bringing Nick White back
into a team, it's sort of a sign that you're
sort of almost running out of ideas and you're going
to throw any sort of dice to try and get
some luck. So I do feel sorry for Joe Schmidt
because the sort of talent and things that he has
in terms of you know, selections is pretty tough. I
think it's sort of a long term, you know situation

(09:18):
for him. In terms of getting the Wallaby's team back
on strat I just can't see anything other than an
All Blacks winding tomorrow, and quite comfortably too. They do
pretty well over there.

Speaker 3 (09:27):
Considered comprehensive win. Yes, okay, coops, we've.

Speaker 5 (09:30):
Got the winner, all right, So yes we have our winner.
Maniah Opi from Wellington.

Speaker 4 (09:34):
He's a good man Mania, I know, man, very good man,
very good man, a good home. Yeah he did, he
ring the whole line.

Speaker 5 (09:44):
Yeah, congratulations tonight, we'll get that jersey to you and
your four tickets for the game tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (09:50):
Thank you both very much, looking forward to we can
I say, piney two, I heard your your Stacy Jones
interview with the other last Saturday morning while I was painting.

Speaker 3 (10:02):
What an outstanding interview. I mean, you were amazing.

Speaker 4 (10:05):
He was a It's great.

Speaker 2 (10:07):
It was it was radio like. You just couldn't walk away.
You couldn't even go to the bathroom. You had to
stay there because.

Speaker 4 (10:13):
I didn't do you any medical harm.

Speaker 3 (10:14):
Well we have a little ad break that I speak

Speaker 2 (10:19):
