Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talks ed B. It's the Friday sport kickoff
with the Glass Shop servicing Wellington for over forty years.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Joining us for the Friday sports kickoff is All Sports
Breakfast host Adam Cooper, Good Morning Coops, the Morning Neck
and weekend sports hosts right around the nation. The number
one rating show with those coops. By the way, Coops
is the number one rating shows. Jason Pine joins us.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
Hello, Nick.

Speaker 4 (00:51):
Self promotion is no promotion at all, is it?

Speaker 3 (00:53):
No, that's self praises, no praises or very wise man
once told me.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
That it was it was it by the line, that
was someone else very close to me. His line in
PC Wellington versus Hawks by tomorrow Coops the game as
of ian Hawks may have suddenly gone to what you
know what? And so is Wellington. Both of them are
not looking that great right now.

Speaker 5 (01:12):
No, Actually, very interesting, isn't it. We've got a ticket
give away. We'll give a question out very shortly for
a family pass four tickets for adults, for kids, whatever
however you want to use it anyway, Ye, really interesting
for both these teams. They've fallen short against Tasman. In
the past month, Hawks Bay lost the rand Philly Shield
to Tasman and Wellington fell short in the Shield Challenge
to Tasman. But both these teams have not been right

(01:35):
since those two respective defeats to Tasman. Hawks may have
been woeful, you know, they rarely suffered, you know, just
some cohesion or anything. In their last couple of games
they had fifty points, but on them on several occasions
they struggled to even get on the score sheets themselves.
And they had been a team that were tracking so
well in this competition and then Wellington. They have not

(01:55):
been right rarely. I think since that Tasman match.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
They tried to tell you guys out a couple of
weeks ago, talked about the Bay of playing game.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
I thought they could lose that because of momentum.

Speaker 5 (02:04):
But they it's getting fifty points one on the my
Counties last week was was horrific and Counties were up
forty eight.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Neil.

Speaker 5 (02:10):
Wellington didn't get on the score sheets till the seventy
fifth day, and to be honest, they never looked like
they would right up until that moment as well. There
was there was nothing threatening from them. So, but of
a change this week. Peter Munger Jensen, who was the
captain since Dupla c Kdfe was out injured. He's been
dropped to the bench, so he's out of the midfield
and a pretty powerful midfield combination with Billy Proctor and
from All Blacks duties and Riley Higgins given the nod

(02:31):
at number twelve. So captain, So Peter Larkey loose forward,
promising future. You know people everyone who's breads good raps
on him. Bradshiels is out injured. OK, so so yeah,
bit of a leadership change. But I think a great
opportunity for Peter Laker, who's moving to the number eight
jersey for this one to skip of this team. And
I don't know, I'm yeahs you's gonna chat him on
the show tomorrow, but he's well in the mix. I
think of the discussion around all Blacks in of View tour,

(02:52):
oh in that question with an All Blacks fifteen as well.
So yeah, but big moment for Peter luck and I
we'll just give that question name the team that's leading
the NPC at the moment. First person to call through
to Ethan on eight hundred and eighty ten eighty who's
leading the NPC will give you four tickets to tomorrow's
game at Sky Stadium against Hawks Bay.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Now, Jason Pine, there's a problem of getting crowds two
for MPC at sky Stadium, isn't it.

Speaker 4 (03:20):
It's going to be a good day tomorrow, hopefully.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
What's the answer to this and who's going to win
and what's give us a bit of a rundown on
the game. But I really want to get your view
on what's going to happen, because I mean, obviously sky
Stadium is going to be out for MPC eventually, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
Yeah, I think so. I think taking games are potty
to a park's great idea. I think we just have
to realize at the moment that there is a limited
audience that we're going to turn up for MPC games,
and so what is the best environment for those people?
And I think pottydoor park has been proven to be it.
Having said that, you know, sky Stadium, there's a deal
between Wellington Rugby and the stadium also the Hurricanes in
the stadium to play a certain number of games there,

(03:54):
and I get that too. Look, I'm more interested tomorrow
and year and what happens. I think I feel like
Wellington should win the game. But Hawks Bay have won
three of the last four against Wellington and they've all
been at sky Stadium. Yeah, so I don't know why
we don't go to Napier anymore. It just seems to
be a quirk of the draw being a couple of
playoff games. But yeah, the only only game of the

(04:14):
last four that Wellington of one other Hawks bars that
quarter final in twenty twenty two. So yeah, it'll be
very interesting. I think Wellington WI won the game. I
think they will and I think they'll they'll lock in
a home quarter and then a semi if they make it.
Tasman is still, without wanting to give away the answer
to the question, still, I think in pole position to
finish top. But I'm looking forward to seeing Billy Procter.

(04:35):
I really like Riley Higgins and keeps is right about
better like I has to be in the mixed four
and end of season two.

Speaker 4 (04:40):
Without doubt future. Let's I want to start with you
on this one too.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
Piny Peas black Caps changed test captain after the seraink
my note says disappointment it was worse than disappointment.

Speaker 4 (04:51):
It was an ask kick.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
Yeah, well they lost both test matches. The second bias
several margin. I think the first Test they were okay
for large parts. Second Test was woeful, absolutely abysmal stuff.
That the yeah, I think they sung the anthem pretty
well and that was it. Captain c change had to happen.
That probably you strike when you've got a seam bowler
as your captain. Is when you go to places like India,

(05:13):
Sri Lanka, the subcontinent, it's spinners who are you know
doing the most of the bowling. So you're only going
to pick two seamers and you got to pick your
fastest one and your best one. And Tim Soude is
neither of those two things. So there was always going
to be pressure on him as captain of the team
to contribute in a meaningful sense. So I think it
had to happen. I really rate his decision to stand

(05:35):
down whether I think so, He's got pretty high integrity.
Tim Soudi has always put the team ahead of his
own interests. I honestly believe he wouldn't have been happy
just to cling on. He knows he's not not putting
the performances out there. Tom Latham's you know, a rusted
or member of the side.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
It doesn't feel like the captain of an inspirational captain
to me.

Speaker 4 (05:55):
Coops, What does he feel like that to you? You
know what I mean?

Speaker 5 (05:57):
I mean, he's led this team several times before and
I think he's he's someone that will not let the
distraction of being a captain effect his own performances. I
think he's he's quite a you know, classy, you know,
smart person who will be able to juggle that pretty well.
Tim Soudy was pretty honest that he feels that the
captaincy has affected his own form in the in the
less than two years that that he's had the role.

(06:19):
That I guess, you know, you look at his wicket
tally in these past two years as well, you know,
there's probably something true to that. So I think probably
a change that that needed to happen. I think probably
should have happened after the last home series where we
got walloped by Australia here and there was sort of
indications then that his time in the role might might
have been on to to borrow times. So yeah, I
mean tough first outing though for Tom Latham and the

(06:40):
Black caps, isn't it heading to India who have won
about thirteen home series in a row. You know that
the results are going to speak for themselves there and
it'll be a tough way for him to be back
here against England.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
If it's not him, who was it?

Speaker 5 (06:51):
That's be question?

Speaker 4 (06:52):
I mean, yeah, you're right.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
If it's not Latham, who's who's the captain?

Speaker 4 (06:55):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Oh gosh, can you just ask that question?

Speaker 5 (07:01):
No one knows, No one knows. All tickets to the lines.
Who leads the NPC.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Texas ninety two dall Daniel Hillier has a great round
of golf in Scotland. Coops tell me the story behind that.

Speaker 5 (07:16):
Yeah, great, Well he's sort of you know, coming to
the end of the season on the DP World to
Daniel Hillyer had a mixed year. I think it's fair
to say it's had some notable success but also some struggles.
But yeah, great start to him at the Alfred Dunhill
Links Championship in Scotland. It's quite an interesting tournament. They
play a pro am, so he's sort of paired up with,
you know, a celebrity, a full time Olympic rowing champion

(07:39):
from the UK. But he is The other interesting part
of this it's across three courses, so he was on
the old course at Saint Andrew's and actually, in terms
of everyone that played that course for round one today
he had the best result nine underpass. So he's tied
for third at the moment, just two shots off the lead.
He has to play Krnoustie next, another iconic Scottish golf course.

(07:59):
It's a beautiful part of the world with some amazing history.
But yeah, great to see two eagles, about five birdies
to his name. He really found some form today. The
conditions were quite kind of nice. Obviously these links courses
you get a bit of winds often, but things had
really sort of calmed down for round one over there today.
So yeah, expecting hope and hoping for some more success
from from Daniel over the weekend party.

Speaker 4 (08:20):
How good is he?

Speaker 3 (08:21):
Oh, it can be very good. Yeah, and it can
be very very good. Whether he reaches the Ryan Fox
levels of being inside the world's top fifty and plays
on the PGA too, remains to be seen. But as
well adjusted a young man as you'll find, great family,
you know, dedicated but also has balance in his life.

(08:41):
If he walked in here to talk to you. You
would like him immediately. That's the kind of guy Daniel Hilly.

Speaker 4 (08:47):
Is and got the talent to back it up.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Yep, on percent right, let's talk women's basketball because it
starts this weekend in Wellington tonight. In fact, yeah, it's
at Potty at Trap Arena and Potida at seven thirty.

Speaker 4 (09:02):
Is that right?

Speaker 2 (09:02):
I'm getting some Nazi I should know that by off
by heart. I'll start with you on this one. Coops,
the Queens. I've got an import. I'm only here in
this secondhand. I had an import from a couple of
years ago that was pretty damn amazing to come back.

Speaker 4 (09:14):
They're kind of like one of the hot favorites.

Speaker 5 (09:16):
Indeed, and you know Stella Beck tall Fern's captain but
part of the Queen's a classy player. Great to have
her representing the Lower North Island in this one.

Speaker 3 (09:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (09:24):
Obviously stars from you know, several American college programs as well,
Seattle and University of Tennessee. I know there's a couple
of players from there, and a whole bunch of young
New Zealand players as well who have had national representation
for New Zealand, not just at a tall fern leave,
but also age group success. So this league is really growing.
It's getting some traction. There's a lot of interest in
it commercially and growing with the coverage that's given on Sky.

(09:46):
So yeah, tod Openha Arena tonight, there's a few games there.
Then they're going to bring a few into TSB Arena.
They're taking a game up to Pame through the season
as well. So in a bit of entertainment tonight. Yeah,
Louis Baker body to a boy playing at the venue
tonight as well. So it's so great stuff. And you know,
you just look at how many people are playing basketball,
males and females. It's just the fastest growing.

Speaker 4 (10:06):
Piney of you ever interviewed.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Stallar Beck No, oh my god, you know how you
talked about Daniel Elliott. I haven't met her, but I
think she's the best female basketball player in the last ten, fifteen,
twenty years in New Zealand.

Speaker 4 (10:19):
I rate her as a BASKETBA number nick, I'll give
her a yeah, just on bus.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
I don't never wellon College are in the mix to
go back to back as National SENA Restored champions. They
are in the semi finals, but they play christ College
this afternoon and christ College are very good. But dob
C could go back to back.

Speaker 4 (10:35):
There you go, there you go?

Speaker 1 (10:36):
Sorry?

Speaker 4 (10:36):
Who is our winner? Keith is our winner.

Speaker 2 (10:39):
It's got a family pass to the Wellington Lions versus
Hawks Bay tomorrow at skys Datium. Thank you guys, appreciate
you coming in. I know you're both extremely busy. It's
great to have you in the studio. Adam Cooper, host
