Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talk sed B. It's the Friday Sport kickoff
with the glass Shop servicing Wellington for over forty years.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Join us for Friday sports kickoff this week in a
Sports host Jason Piney Morning Jays, Hello, Nick at All
Sports Breakfast host Adam Cooper, Good morning Coops net today.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
Do you mind me calling you coops and find it
at all? Does that matter on the show?
Speaker 4 (00:47):
I feel like that the horse has bolted a bit?
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Is it a bit low?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Does it take the standard of our showdown a little bit?
N PC Wellington versus County his mannecau. Now I had
to write counties mannecaeu down. It took me seventeen times
to get the spell manicou right, but I got it
there eventually. M a in man a ceo w is
at Manichael.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
Well, that's how spelled, but phonetically that's okay.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
NPC quarter Final at sky Stadium. Let's start with you
Piney on this one because the last time these teams
played there was a spanking going on and it wasn't
Wantington giving it.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
No, that's exactly right.
Speaker 5 (01:19):
An aberration, I think in this season that's been on
the whole pretty good and Coeps made the point a
couple of weeks ago, might have even been last week
that since Wellington challenged unsuccessfully for the Ranfilly Shield, their
season has been a bit bitsy and that game was
part of it. The Golden pointment over Bay of Plenty
was part of it. Last weekend it took them fifteen
minutes to get into gear, by which stage Hawks Bay
were twenty one dollar head. So yeah, they've been a
(01:40):
little bit bitsy since they had that shield challenge, hopefully
tonight with the return of some pretty big names, not
least of which TJ. Penny is starting starting tonight. Now
he was initially named on the bench, going to start
tonight his final final final game on that patch of
grass that he knows and loves so much. Look, I
think Wellington should should win the game of rugby. Cameroy
(02:02):
Guard's going to start for or come off the bench
start for County and raor against against roy Guard.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
Wow, the Princess.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
It's worth a price of admission on its own, absolutely.
Speaker 6 (02:12):
Because I was initially wondering, well if Royguard's starting and
Petidada is on the bench and will we actually see
them face off against each other. But now this late
change to Wellington TJ in the number nine Jerseys squaring
off against cam Royguard both of their last games before
that departing our next Friday or Thursday, I believe on
the end of year tour. So this is the last
chance we'll see both of them sort of. I guess
it's almost a trial for the number nine jersey for
(02:33):
interview too.
Speaker 5 (02:34):
Yeah, I think it does look that way, CORTI if
love time I might have something to say about that,
But yeah, I think I think a really interesting little
layer to this game as is the return of a
suff for one more and for Wellington. You know, he
hasn't had probably the international season he would have hoped for.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
I think that's probably fair to say.
Speaker 5 (02:51):
Cody Taylor's had the number two jerseys so and up
a Suffer's come on and done well at times. But
you know, I'm sure there are improvements he's looking for.
Duplessy kodify for you to say that. You know, my
favorite one of my favorite low time Wellington play it
massive in for Wellington after breaking his daw on what
the third round coaps, I think it was on he
hasn't played for a long time, but and also named
(03:12):
and that All Blacks fifteen squad, so he knows he's
there or thereabouts when it comes to the All Blacks
and they lose forward, So a lot to play for
for these Wellington guys to not I think they'll want
it going away.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
I think they'll want it thirteen plus.
Speaker 5 (03:23):
But then I thought that last week as well, and
the week before and the week before.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
And you guys have never listened to me about my
famous quote about momentum. Have you how many times we
discussed momentum. Momentum is a mother something we can't say
on radio, right, And I said to you, momentum is key,
And you guys just look at me and goes, what
does he know about sport? You know what is You
know he's a talk back hoast. But anyway, momentum is
something in sport.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
So do the Wellington lines have it? In that case?
Speaker 5 (03:47):
They won last week's question, but they won unconvincingly. They
haven't got Counties, on the other hand, had a very
good one last week.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
They have not got momentum. I don't believe they have.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
You.
Speaker 4 (03:56):
I think it'll be tighter than thirteen plus that wasn't.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
The question I asked said, do you think they've got momentum?
Speaker 6 (04:01):
They will with some new players, but not with who
they had last weeks.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
How's your backside from sitting on the fence? Is that right?
Speaker 6 (04:09):
I think they'll be better than they were last week?
So does that mean they have momentum? I feel like
next to you used to talking to politicians and here
is grilling us.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
I mean, you know you guys are buddy bulling.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
Out for Tory faro on Monday.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Have ever been two great as you two?
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Would?
Speaker 3 (04:24):
Be it?
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Really?
Speaker 3 (04:25):
If you want? You want yes or no? Come to
me if you want that looks nice? Go to party
and oh it could be good. Go to coops right,
tell us about the competition.
Speaker 6 (04:36):
Oh it's stunned now No, no, we have because it's
for the listeners, not unit. We have two jerseys to
give away and a double pass to the game tonight.
So two Wellington Lions jerseys and two tickets to the
game tonight. So Ethan's ready. On eight and eighteen eighty,
the question is name two of those all blacks who
are back playing for Wellington tonight. Two of the four
(04:57):
all blacks on the end of your tour. If you
can name two of them, give us a call and
we'll give you two tickets and two jerseys. It's a
Medium and an Excel jersey as part of this price back.
So call through and they could be yours.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
Before I bring up do I have to pronounce the names? Right?
Speaker 4 (05:11):
Absolutely?
Speaker 1 (05:11):
You do? Can you?
Speaker 4 (05:12):
Can you not pronounce and spell them? Yeah? You should
be okay with Billy Procter.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
I'm buying my ticket, all right.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
I'm by my ticket to go without a jersey America's Cup, Piney,
I've got to start with you. I should have started
with Coats, but I'll come to coach for about next question.
Let's start with it. Does anyone give a damn? And
do we still hate the man himself?
Speaker 5 (05:32):
Two good questions. I'll answer the first one, which is
I don't know whether people have engaged fully with the
America's Cup ups now because Team New Zealand haven't been sailing.
The proof of the pudding will be whether they start
to engage now that we're actually at the America's Cup.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
Part of it.
Speaker 5 (05:46):
It's all been the Louis at time the Challenger Series,
Team New Zealand had some early races which didn't actually
mean anything in the preliminary regatta and then in the
early stages of the Louis Vuitton for the last month
or either just been practicing by themselves in the simulator
or or you know, against their second boat, presumably, but
they are on Sunday morning at one o'clock we are
into it the best of thirteen for the America's Cup.
(06:09):
The look, it's a tough time to get up. One
o'clock in the morning is a tough time to get up.
I think the fact it's off sure is part of it.
That the fact we're defending it off shore. I think
people a lot of people are still a bit dirty
on that.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
But can you answer the second part of the question.
Speaker 4 (06:24):
I don't know. I think opinion is divided on Grunt Dalton.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
Okay, you what about your own personal opinion.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
I haven't really had a lot to do with them.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
Oh okay, I'll get off the fence and go to COOPSID.
Speaker 6 (06:34):
I think a naturally people are less engaged because it
is not here. You know, when it is in Auckland's
you know, even down here in Wellington, you feel the bars.
You almost get a bit envious or jealous of people that.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
That that are up there that are part of it.
Speaker 6 (06:49):
And it's not just the America's Cup, it's everything about
you know, just the famous people in town that the
rich list is. But I think there's almost a time
now where I think people have a lot less desire
to support Team New Zealand.
Speaker 4 (07:02):
I think it's you know, naturally, I think.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
It's got anything to do with the grunt Dalton.
Speaker 6 (07:05):
I think he's we've worked out that he's he's part
of maybe people not wanting to support them as much.
You know how that whole stuff played out that you know,
an ex colleague of ours, Hamish Rutherford, was able to unearth,
you know, through a lot of you know, private negotiations
that he was able to find between the previous government
and Team New Zealand around that that they certainly are
not there for the best interests of New Zealand, like
(07:26):
they try and say Team News they're sponsored by Emirates,
it's wholly financially funded. But for them, I don't think
they really care if Kiwis are engaged in it. They
know so much sponsorship money. They're all there for themselves
having a good time over there. But I think maybe
if it comes down to a deciding race in the
best of thirteen. I think it'll be maybe people get
into it, but it's not not this early stages.
Speaker 4 (07:45):
I don't know. I think people will wake up in
the morning and check the results.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Yeah, that's me one hundred percent.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
Wait for the news to come on at five o'clock
to tell me who won your one hundred percent. Rafael
Nadal retires. I mean, I love the fact that coops
are going to come to you first on this one.
We've got two minutes to get through, to get through.
I love the fact that he did it on Facebook
and did it in the Spanish did you think, I mean,
I just thought to myself, Shit, that's pretty classy.
Speaker 6 (08:10):
Yeah, I stay true as you know his lords. And
the really cool thing is is that he's going to
have his last housing after you know, almost twenty years
on the top circuit, playing at the Grand Slams, by
representing his country playing for Spain in the Davis Cup
next month. And I think we saw at the Olympics
just how much these players actually playing for their country
meant to them because they don't obviously usually usually do that.
(08:31):
So I mean, for me, when you look at him
up against Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic. Nadal's always struck me
as sort of the more sort of genuine, the nicer guy,
that the character that the guy that you'd sort of
want to have around for dinner and have a really
good chat with, you know, ferocious on clay, twenty two
Grand Slam titles and all. It's been a stellar career
(08:53):
and you know, we've been so lucky to have him
and the likes of Feda, and you know, next year
it's twenty years since he first played a Grand Slam.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
Crazy, isn't it.
Speaker 6 (09:01):
There's a whole generation of tennis fans who can only
remember tennis with the likes of rough on Odal.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
And now we've got fifty seconds piney. I don't think
I would invite Rafael and Now to my home for dinner.
I'd be watching my wife the whole time. I mean,
he's pretty. It's pretty impressive looking, man, isn't he.
Speaker 4 (09:15):
Well.
Speaker 5 (09:15):
I mean, I'm not sure that everybody that comes to
your house is after an extramurit or relationship, but might
just be what happened to say in the Eastern Suburbs,
doesn't everything body?
Speaker 4 (09:24):
I'm just saying what a fine looking man. Here he
is a fine looking man.
Speaker 5 (09:27):
Look I put it this way, he's hard to dislike,
right what, I'm sorry, he's hard to dislike. And what
I read his book and he said just to win
one Grand Slam seemed out of reach for him. Twenty
two and fourteen at Rolling Garriff's incredible, amazing, Thank you
both very much.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
You'll go down as one of the top five of
all time? Yes or no?
Speaker 4 (09:48):
Are you know?
Speaker 3 (09:49):
Would you go down? Toss?
Speaker 6 (09:51):
Andrew Drummond is the winner. The Lions tickets said and
jerseys there we go.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
I would have got that day, right, wouldn't I? Did
you trust me with that?
Speaker 1 (09:59):
