Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talk said b it's the Friday Sport kickoff
with the Glass Shop servicing Wellington for over forty years.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Joining us for Friday Sport Kickoff is All Sports Breakfast
hosts Adam Cooper Morning, Coops, Morning it caw are great,
thank you and joining us over the phone this weekend
the sports host Jason pine Morning Piney. My gosh, you
know it was Coops's birthday yesterday? Piney. Do you remember that?

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Yes? I did?

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Did you? An's s all right? I just want to
make sure you remember it. All Blacks versus Ireland tomorrow
at nine am. What a great time for a Test match, breakfast,
cup of coffee in front of a TV. How good?
How big a game is this? Adam Cooper? Huge?

Speaker 4 (01:06):
Yeah, I'm and it's for me when you've looked at
the calendar this year, on the back of the rematch
from the playoffs and the World Cup last year, this
was always one that sort of, you know, sort of
was an outlier as such a huge game for both
the All Blacks and the Irish teams. I mean, you know,
the All Blacks have not had the most convincing first
season under Scott Robertson, and I think that'd be the

(01:26):
first to sort of accept that fact to it has
not been a seamless or easy year for them. And
you've got this Irish team who have obviously, you know,
most recently had that huge result that won all series
in South Africa, which you know they will be still
banking on, i'd say, leading into this match. And I
guess when you look at you know, compare these two

(01:46):
teams from when they met last time, right, You've got
the bulk of this Irish team starting were involved in
that thriller at the Rugby World Cup last year. The
All Blacks are without some of their best players from
that World Cup campaign last year, Richie Munger, Aaron Smith,
Sam Whitelock, Brody Retallick, you know, the All Blacks, you know,
quite a different side and a lot less experience, especially

(02:09):
when you take into account Bowden Barrett's who at this
very moment has been deemed the numans that the number
one first five eighths not not part of this test
due to due to concussion. So yeah, I mean I've
picked Ireland and our work tip and competition arranged by Pining.
I just think their experience, they've got a great record
at home. I think they might do it tomorrow morning.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
Jason Pine. If I've got one thing that I'm a
little bit concerned about is line out throwing from us.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Yeah, I think Cody Taylor's a bigger lost than Boden Barrett.
Actually he's out with the concussion as well.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
More.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
We love him Wellington boy, Hurricanes boy in the loose,
you know, with the ball in hand, absolutely destructive. But
he's a hooker and a core role for Roker or
one of them is throwing the ball into the lineout
and he just hasn't quite yet mastered all of the
infricacies of that in the same way that Dane Cole
said that Cody Taylor did that, Kevin Milamu did, Shaun

(03:06):
Fitzpatsbrick our great hookers and look, he's still on early
in his career. But the fact that he's starting tomorrow
rather than coming off the bench means that he's and
with only George bow on the bench, who, let's not
forget guys, has never started a Test match and has
only played twice off the bench against Fiji and Japan.
So such an inexperienced hooking cohort a lot of it's

(03:29):
going to fall on a safe more. I think the
All Blacks will win the Test match. I just have
this funny feeling that that they will will do what
needs to be done. However, the tab completely disagree. But
I've got the Irish at a dollar forty seven. Can
either of you guys ever remember a time when an
All Blacks opponent was that short on our tab?

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Never? No, I mean I think I've seen it once
at a dollar seventy eight. They are against South Africa.
I think I've seen a dollars seventy eight against South
Africa and South Africa as the closest I've ever can remember. Wow,
that's incredible. So what's going to happen? Piney, who's going
to win? What's coops has already said that we're going
to lose. I still think we're going to win. I

(04:14):
don't know why.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
Yeah, I've got the All Blacks narrowly. I just think
there'll be moments within this game that are absolutely crucial.
I know that's not really a bold claim that probably
happens in every close sporting contest. I just feel like
this might be a year defining test match for Scott
Robertson's all blacks and yeah, I've got us winning narrowly,

(04:36):
but there's no way I'm putting any money on it me.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Neither Phoenix lost to walk on to the Derby last week.
I'll start with you on this one, Coops, because the
piney will they will let him have a bit of
a yeah, because I think he's out there talking to Chief.
Are you out there talking to Chief?

Speaker 3 (04:49):
You pony just for this year?

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Okay? Was he all right, I'll start with you. I'll
start with you. I'll change my two, I'll start with you.
Was he okay?

Speaker 3 (04:57):
He was fine? Yeah, Look he's very philosophical. Gimclo with Taliano.
Yes he said it hurt. Derby's a difference, but you know,
every a single game is worth three points, including the
one they play on Sunday night against the Mariners. It's
no different from the game they head against Aukord left seat.
What I would say if we take it away from
the Phoenix just for a second, there's what an occasion

(05:18):
twenty six thousand turning up to watch two New Zealand
teams play game of football. I mean, I never thought
i'd see it absolutely brilliant occasion and sets up a
rivalry which has only just started into appointment viewing in
the in the months and years ahead. I just can't
wait for the next one.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
I can I tell you when the next one is
because I can remember it now. I'm not a football guy,
but it's December the seventh. How's that?

Speaker 4 (05:41):
Wow?

Speaker 3 (05:41):
Very good? It's up up in Auckland. Are you going
to be your books your flighte?

Speaker 2 (05:45):
No, the Breakers are playing the Sydney Kings on the
same day in Wellington, which has been first time in
about five years that we've had a big game of
basketball like that in Wellington. So I think I'll be there.

Speaker 4 (05:53):
And there's a testat Cricket Test here, well.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Then yeah, I'll go and join the Barbie Arby as well.
You got there on on up there.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
Pony, Okay, that's again, I'll go. I don't know if
I take photos of the two of you or something.
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Come on, coops, tell us what your thoughts of you
were on the ground during the announce.

Speaker 4 (06:11):
A great occasion, and yes it was a disappointing outing
for the Phoenix. You know, it was so tight. Should
have been a drawer. That's what it was headed for.
Just a couple of a couple of mistakes at the
end there. So I mean, I think regardless of that result,
we all move on, we all look forward. We know
that this is going to be a great rivalry. We
know for the Phoenix that this is going to be
a big money earner if the interest remains in these

(06:31):
big derbys and they can get you know, twenty six
thousand or close to for you know, annual or twice
annual fixtures with Auckland FC. So it's done nothing but
you know, great things for the footballing rivalry here. I
think Phoenix there in early stages of their season. They've
got the likes of their new goalkeeper josh Oliwayemi, other
players learning their ways and it's you know, early on
in the season. So certainly not too worried about you

(06:54):
know what we saw last week in that final result
as well, But a big trip to Central Coast Sunday
night for them, and of course Phoenix women starting their
see home campaign they began last weekend across the ditch
home at Potty to a Park on Sunday our known
against Canberra.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
I'll just get along and support that Racas what are
they called Orcas? Orcas are back trying to get another
team in the NRL. Now, Piney, you wouldn't remember this
even though, so it's probably before your time. But they've tried.
The guy Charmers has tried this before in Wellington and
now he's pulling out Sir Graham Low and trying. It's
the same old story. It's not going to happen. They
don't have the backing. Why are we wasting our time?

(07:28):
Why don't we just concentrate on the warriors?

Speaker 3 (07:32):
Aren't there three different consortiums in ch Yeah? I mean,
I mean that's alone, That alone is absolutely ridiculous. Why
wouldn't the three of them get round the table together
and come up with one united bid?

Speaker 4 (07:46):
Yeah? Are you working for christ Church or are you
working for yourselves? That's the question here. And and they've
been in secret that this Orcas one was supposedly secret.
You know, if we want to Sickond his Zealand team,
as Piney said, let's rally together, not not be up
against each other knocking heads trying to make it all happen.
You've got Frank Endicott's one, You've got the others. It
also just seems a bit of miss.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
And I don't think any of them will come to anything.
That's my humble opinion. Adam Cooper and Jason I agree.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
Sorry, I agree. I don't think it'll happen.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
No, there you go, Jason Pine, you don't have to
apologize for take a beautiful thing. Jason Pine. Nice to hear.
Have you on the show. Adam Cooper's likewise Adam Cooper
in the mornings and Piney in the afternoons.
