Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talks at b It's the Friday sport kick
off with the glass shop servicing Wellington for over forty years.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Well, while we're watching that, there's a dog on the pitch.
You don't often see that, certainly not this level any longer.
I think that might be only Longo's own dog. Maybe
he needs to go and get.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
Her or or him.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yellow fever and a rendition of Who Let the Dogs Out?
And there there are all sorts of players that try
to tempt the cane.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
I think I'm in this thing too long. Reunited with
the poach.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Versus indeed the feast league in the world.

Speaker 4 (01:04):
Now, who let the Dog Out? Piety?

Speaker 3 (01:07):
Dogs on the pitch? Oh my gosh, one of the
great New Zealand sporting traditions.

Speaker 5 (01:11):
Great commentary, that'll go down to there. They'll play that
at your funeral, ain't they?

Speaker 4 (01:17):
That?

Speaker 5 (01:17):
Or the other version of Who Let the Dogs Out?
The other one, remember the other version that didn't turn
off you were trying to do Who Let the Dogs Out?

Speaker 4 (01:23):
With the bulldog story?

Speaker 3 (01:24):
That is a long time ago. Yeah, it's a long
time ago. What is it?

Speaker 5 (01:28):
With you and dogs. You don't even own a dog.
Let's say welcome to Jason Pie and Adam Cook.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Ask good morning.

Speaker 4 (01:35):
We're talking sport dogs wolf Wolf. Let's get it started.

Speaker 5 (01:39):
All Blacks versus frants Ard he goes to seven, Boden
back at half back and Roy Guard. I mean the
the game changed when Roy Guard came on last week.

Speaker 4 (01:49):
I think Piney, what do you think.

Speaker 6 (01:51):
Well, yeah, if it did or if it didn't, I'm
glad he's starting this one. I think he's earned the
right to start his in obviously been eased back in
the game against Japan, then then off the bench both
the previous tests.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
Was it against England and Ireland?

Speaker 6 (02:04):
Yeah, I think he's he's the number one half back
moving forward. You know, I think he is going to
wear that nine jersey for a long time, you know,
challenged by the likes of Latimat and also Nah Hoothem
and maybe others as well, but yeah, he's the he's
your man and I can't wait to see how he
goes that. The move of Arty to seven interests me,
you know, I kind of would have liked to see

(02:24):
him stay at eight and Peterlarkey get the opportunity to
play at seven. He's an open side flanker. If he's there,
why wouldn't you just play him? I would quite like
to have seen that.

Speaker 5 (02:34):
But I think it's I think it is I think
it's football IQ. I think that that number seven is
always a high IQ position because you've got to do.

Speaker 4 (02:43):
So much right.

Speaker 5 (02:44):
Not saying sex and eight don't have to, but you've
got to make so many quick decisions. Artie is a
perfect number seven. If I was Artie's manager, I'd say
play seven till you retire.

Speaker 6 (02:53):
But he hasn't played in the seven jersey for the
backs all the Hurricanes for three years. Look, I'm not
saying you can't do it, and what's the number on
your back now doesn't really matter, but but but what
is it? I kind of feel like if Peter Larchive's there,
then you pick them.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
All, right, coops, come on ed and come in with
your piece on that.

Speaker 7 (03:09):
Yeah, totally. I mean Lark is the man for the future.
That's been six air marks yep for quite some time,
so you know, get him in there. He will obviously
be coming off the bench. But again, we've talked about
Billy Procter and his opportunities this year. He's done nothing wrong,
nor has Peter Larkye a very similar predicament that those
guys are in, and you think at some point maybe
they've been slightly underutilized this year, but you can't fault

(03:30):
the experience that Artie will will take to that number
seven jersey, and it gives those other guys you know,
female and as well as well as Satiti, the chance
to prove they're worth there. So I guess in some
ways we are still blooding the next generation.

Speaker 6 (03:43):
Yeah, I don't mind Satiti at eight because I think
that's where he'll end up. But the loose four trio
I would like to have seen would have been Satiti
at six, likely at seven, Savia at eight.

Speaker 5 (03:52):
You know what I really still are looking for. I'm
looking for Murray mixteare tot eight six four, lean athlete jumper,
you know, defensive wiz Kuld.

Speaker 4 (04:02):
We just haven't had one of.

Speaker 6 (04:04):
You know, what we have had is a guy who's
World Rugby Player of the Year in Arti se years
So do you need you, Dean?

Speaker 3 (04:10):
Look?

Speaker 6 (04:10):
As much as I used to love the way Mix
played the game, I had them on the radio a
few weeks ago it's making exactly that point around the
number six, Nick, that your six needs to be that
guy who's Rangy a lineout option, all of a six
for six beast, like some a penny female. Actually yeah,
not like Wallace a Titia. I think moving forward, it
feels to me as though Satiti will be your number eight,
like I will be your number seven. The number six,

(04:30):
Jersey will probably be. You know, we still have We
may not land on that person, but as Coop said,
Lakey's the future, Satiti is the future. I would quite
like to have seen them both in the Starting Lose trio.

Speaker 5 (04:41):
Okay, we talked on this show a few weeks ago
before the tour started, how many did we need to
win for the season to be a successed?

Speaker 4 (04:48):
Do you remember that conversation?

Speaker 2 (04:49):
Yep.

Speaker 5 (04:49):
Now a couple of you, both, you two experts, said
two or three would be enough for you. I'm saying
grand Slam. Now I'm saying we've got to win this weekend,
you know, I mean, I think the first two performances
have been great because they've been victories. Have they been
great games of football? No, but they've been victories away overseas.

Speaker 6 (05:09):
Sorry, so you're saying if we lose to France on Sunday,
the tour is a failure.

Speaker 5 (05:13):
No, I don't think it's a failure, but I think
it's okay. But I'm now saying we want as New
Zealanders Grand Slam. Now we want four out of four,
and then the season will say, Okay, you know Scott
was just started, you know, his job and started all
that stuff.

Speaker 4 (05:26):
It's been a great year.

Speaker 7 (05:28):
Yeah, I mean, I think the turning point was last weekend.
I think you know, there was really there wasn't overwhelming
hope or expectation like we usually have with the All
Blacks that we would get the job done. And I
think especially just seeing you know, just a complete performance.
Ireland weren't amazing. They played probably one of their worst
games of the season, but said that New Zealand fought

(05:49):
for that victory and showed, I think for the first
time under Scott Roberts soon that they produced a very
comprehensive win and one that they should be really proud of.
So for me, I almost don't mind what happens this
weekend because I think that was such a crucial victory
that that that's we've shown and we've seen enough competence
from this team selections and the players to go into
next year with a lot of satisfaction.

Speaker 5 (06:10):
But I think we've been drinking champagne, so we don't
want to go back to drinking beer. I think I
think we're we're on a roll now, so I don't
I don't want to see you a loss. I want
to see a comprehensive win against France, which I think
roy Garden makes a difference. So now I know you're
both looking at me. I think that the speed that
he gets that bought out. I don't think I've seen
a half back like that for a long time.

Speaker 6 (06:27):
I mean, I think Aaron Smith did a very swith yeah, yeah,
so that's a while. I think cam roy Gard is
a yeah, look he's he's a terrific player, but let's
not forget he's just early in his career.

Speaker 3 (06:35):
I agree with him.

Speaker 6 (06:36):
I'd love to see them beat France, and I think
if they do, I mean, they'll beat itterly next week,
doesn't matter my creen they put out, they'll beat itly.
So all of a sudden, you're right, You've got your
end of season tour five games, three of them tricky.
You've won all five. Then then I think Scott Robertson
has a fairly good summer on the beach.

Speaker 5 (06:51):
You know, he has a very good summer of the beach,
A very good summer of the beach. Totally, Okay, totally,
So I'm going all Black win.

Speaker 7 (06:58):
At least ten.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
Yeah when going away.

Speaker 5 (07:01):
Yeah, something that I that I might get a little
bit emotional about. So beer with me on this because
I'm a real love it right. I love kiwis that
do well on any sport. Now, I'm not a football guy,
as our listeners would know, and Piney you definitely know
and keeps you know as well. Chris Wood to me
is in my top all time Kiwi sports people, not
football all time, you know what I mean. I love

(07:21):
the fact that he's always made himself available for New
Zealand anytime that twenty four hour our flight he comes back,
plays on ship grounds with ship teams against ship teams.

Speaker 4 (07:32):
Never know what I mean.

Speaker 5 (07:33):
So, I mean he's my top footballer And I thought
about this in the middle of the night.

Speaker 4 (07:38):
Piney.

Speaker 5 (07:38):
I'm going to come to you first as our resident
football expert. Do you agree or disagree?

Speaker 6 (07:43):
I've got him right up there, you asked me the
question out in the newsroom before you came on here.
Is he our greatest of a footballer? I think he
has achieved the greatest footballing feats by a New Zealander
in scoring whatever it as, seventy odd now Premier League goals.
No one else has ever done that. I don't know
that anybody ever will. They might, But is he our
greatest ever footballer? I still think Winton ruth is in

(08:04):
that conversation. Yeah, I still think Nelson's in that conversation.
Chris Wood is not the kind of guy who's going
to beat two or three guys and stick it in
the top corner. But even he says yeah, even he
says that, But he I think you're right. He gets
a huge amount of kudos rightly so for always turning up.

Speaker 3 (08:21):
You're right.

Speaker 6 (08:22):
But he's even all going to put a hamstring legal.
I'm not going to come down here and play vanuatu.
I'm not going to come down here and play some more.
He always comes every single time. And now the thing
is now, if you don't come, I'm not saying Chris Wood,
he's probably ring fence. But if you're a US and
all white, you don't come to these games. You're probably
not making the next squad because there's so much depth. Now, okay,
I think he should be knighted. I mean they night

(08:42):
other athletes, you know why, because he's a footballer. I
think when Winton Ruf has never been knighted either.

Speaker 3 (08:47):
I think he's got a new year, he's got an honor.

Speaker 5 (08:50):
But he should be knighted too. I mean, you know
you think about those guys. I mean, you know Ryan Nelson,
he should have been He should be knighted. I mean
why is it because it's football?

Speaker 7 (08:59):
Coops? Give me your greatest fear that obviously you know
was born after Winston. Winston Rufe was was a player.
But you know, I went to the the Winner's academy
that he ran with his family as a young junior footballer.
So I've got to learn about his achievements and knowing
that that he was so good. But having you know,
watched and followed Chris Wood through a lot of his career,
you know, fifteen years, it's spanned in the White Jersey

(09:21):
and as Piney said, he's always available. I mean a
lot of the stories you think of when the all
Whites emerging camp year and year out, for World Cup qualification,
for international friendlies, the biggest storylines are often which all
whites have chosen not to play, or which all black
all whites are not being released by their clubs. But
with Chris Wood, it's just been so consistent and he's
seen them when he's in camp. To him on the

(09:41):
news last night, he's he's loving it. You know, he's
in the middle of it, a great Premier League season.
Eight goals already so far, and he's happy to be
down here. And you just got to think that that
inspiration that he must his persona must provide those younger
players in the team now, his passion for the jersey,
I think must resonate with all of them. And as
he said, you don't see too many of the young
up and comers missing all whites duties.

Speaker 4 (10:03):
Now, no, no, that's great news.

Speaker 5 (10:05):
Just quickly before before we go really quickly, Coops, it's
speedways on again.

Speaker 4 (10:09):
I love the speedway.

Speaker 7 (10:10):
Well, I was going to talk about it because that's
been rained off all weekend all season so far, every
weekend there's been speedway schedule. The rain has hampered it.
Couldn't do their fireworks night last weekend. They were hoping
to do them tomorrow night, but literally just heard moments
before coming in here again and it again because the
weather is not looking good. So I do feel really
sorry for the speedway organizers. It's a great family occasion

(10:30):
out there at Timidella, just by the river Attucker's. So
the fireworks are having to wait and all the petrol
and enjoyment that comes with it's a few gyms, the noise,
it's going to have to wait at least another week
for another couple of weekends. I think, so gutted for
the organizers there.

Speaker 5 (10:45):
Thanks guys, Weekend Sports host Jason Pine and All Sports
Breakfast hosts Adam Cooper, but he's taking the day off tomorrow.
Matt Buck is filling in for him. Adam Cooper and
the game too. When they're going they're going to Auckland.

Speaker 4 (10:58):
They're going up there for some special concert Coldplay. Of
course they're going to cold Play.
